It's been a couple years since I went, but they were quite good. I grew up in Rochester but moved away at 13. My mom moved back to NY out to the southern tier. When I visited with my wife and kids a couple years back, we asked my mom for a recommendation on somewhere to go for a date night. She said Beef'n'Barrel is quite good. It was. The meat was delicious. The horseradish was real (California doesn't do real horseradish... so getting the real stuff for once was great), and the atmosphere was upscale yet relaxed and comfortable. We had this place suggested to us and are so glad we listened. Kind of "old worldy" in the decor, which we liked. No TV on every wall, just a great place to sit and enjoy. Our waiter, John, was prompt, helpful and very helpful. I HIGHLY recommend the beef on kummelwick (sp). The bread was incredible, and the slow cooked roast beef (cooked to order might I add) was thinly sliced and piled on. Mt wife had the roast beef au jus, which she loved. They do their own baking of everything we had, bread and desserts, and there is a reason they are still doing it that way. I had a local beer with blueberries in it. Different, but good. We stopped by this place on a recent road trip. It had awesome, awesome roast beef. I ordered the roast beef on kummelwick ("weck," as the waitress pronounced it) -- a large, soft roll with salt and rye seeds sprinkled on it. Best of all, I would specify how I wanted the roast beef cooked. Glory, glory, hallelujah! I ordered it rare. It was delightfully tasty. I also ordered the German potato salad as a side. It was absolutely legit -- warm, bacony, vinegary deliciousness. The hubby had a French dip and french fries with gravy. Today I had lunch here with my mom and grandmother. Mom and I got the sirloin and my grandmother had the fish sandwich lunch special. We're from out of town so we had no expectations going in. Everything from the service to the food to the ambiance was top notch. Our steaks were so tender that I could hardly believe they were only $9.95! The fish sandwich, which came with a cup of soup and cole slaw, was too much for my grandmother to finish and at $7.95 she thought it was a steal. We occasionally make the trek out this way for sentimental reasons and we are now going to add this restaurant to the list of traditional stops that we absolutely must hit. I didn't try the bar but my grandmother's vodka gimlet was so strong that she almost fell asleep on the way back to our hotel. Next time, someone else can drive! read more

There is not enough good things I could say about this restaurant. I used to come here when I went to St Bonaventure and I still try to come for dinner every time I am visiting the area. The restaurant is clean, wait staff is super attentive and the food is EXCELLENT. Even for my non-beef eating friends, there are some options for them as well. Out of the dozen+ times I visited, I have never had a bad meal there. The only thing is that the line to get in gets busy, but they move people quickly and the establishment is huge, so you are never waiting that long! read more

Meh all-around. Took a while to get seated, without any greeting, even though two servers were standing around nearby. The people ahead of me were even more annoyed at being ignored. Side Caesar was a tad stale. The "wick" is a roast beef on a bagel-like roll. The bagel-like roll was good, the roast beef was meh. I have been going to the Beef and Barrel for more years than I can count. I have always enjoyed their Beef on Weck sandwiches. However, the last 2 times I was there my meat was quite tough and hard to eat. Don't know if it's the way the beef was cut or the quality was not there. Love the "Beef" I would have to agree with some the reviewers in that the decor is OLD fashioned and has been that way ever since the remodeled and expanded... which was so long ago now I can't remember when it was. The beef on weck is the best I have had in WNY, however not everything else on the menu is as great. French onion soup is ok, salads ok. I know my grandmother always enjoyed the chicken and dumplings... Get any of the dishes wish the delicous sliced to order beef. Service has always been good and friendly over the years. read more

One of a couple of locally run Olean restaurants that serve dinner after 9 pm. Beef 'n Barrel serves great roast beef. And an excellent grilled chicken breast. They sometimes go overboard on gravy so ask to dial it back. Salads are sometimes too large for their plates. On a recent visit, we had a hard time getting a server to take our order. When the manager learned of this, he apologized in person -- twice -- and comped our drinks. We left happy, and will return again. read more

Okay so I gave this joint another chance. I'm a sucker plus really hungry. Here's the good news.....Andy at the bar knows his stuff. Manhattan chowder. Delish. Martinis served in COLD glasses APlus. Steak actually served to temp A Plus Plus. The fact that he actually checked to see if I was happy A triple plus. Over my shoulder though I hear a patron complaining about a server ignoring them. Everything was perfect! Our family had dinner here last night. Our server was right on point with everything and very friendly. The onion flower was delicious and enough for everyone to share. We ordered two fish fry, the portions were big and the kids both really enjoyed the fish. We also ordered a few roast beef dishes! All nice sized portions, we went home with a lot of leftovers!! The roast beef is cooked to perfection and they have a roast beef carving station for all beef orders. I've been here before for lunch and they have the most delicious salads, lots to choose from. Just had dinner last night....and so disappointed..ordered the ribs and they were uncooked...they presented poorly..think a good wait person would have noticed that. Could not cut through them....upon telling her they are raw..no apology..was going to bring more out more.....ribs take a lot of time ..told her no they are all raw.. she didn't get it...if one rack is raw they all are undercooked....I ordered the roast beef....I'd give it a 3 stars..not as good as mine...but tender.. my biggest gripe is ...?? who sends out ribs that are undercooked? And why did she blow it off like it was me..should have had a manager come over to make it somewhat better but to her it was nothing..my dinner was ruined and that was okay with her...she did take the rib order off our check..but it was not enough..husband had the steak and it was ok...nothing special...just very disappointed! read more

I want to say the service was better than the food. Our server Isy was great. This place was very nice, clean, and friendly staff. The food was ok and was 3 stars. Definitely order the roast beef its their specialty. The sirloin was ordered medium and came out well. It was very good flavor and did not complain. The grilled chicken dinner was also overcooked. My son ordered the chicken tender platter and said they where top notch!! And hes a tender aficionado. All in all i will definitely try again when we travel this way. read more

Sometimes you don't know whether a restaurant is run by lazy people or homophobic people. My girlfriend and I stood for five minutes and asked no less than five people to seat us. But they literally just looked at us blankly and refused to do so. That includes the guy at the bar and the two young women at the register. Congrats. I haven't been to the beef and barrel in awhile and was really looking forward to it. I was disappointed. I ordered the beef plate and salad. The beef was totally cold as was the au jus and was quite tough. There was no warming it up as it would have gone from med rare to well done. Asking around our table - the beef and weck was cold also. . It didn't have to be hot - but at least warm. The American potato salad was so-so. The green salad was Ok as was the german potato salad, The bill for the four of us for lunch was approx. $70 (no alcoholic drinks). Soup was served barely above room temperature, tasted okay. Main course was flat ... wouldn't call it gross, but it just had no taste. Had a kummelweck special, referred to as a beef on weck, which is a must have if visiting NY. The atmosphere is wonderful and reminds me of an older and very classy establishment. Great atmosphere, it's very calm and the low lighting definitely creates a mood. The menu is a bit over priced for what you get. I feel that when dining here you pay for the atmosphere rather than great food. This is a decent place to bring the family.
