I asked my kids what they wanted for lunch today, and my son said "a Chicago hot dog" (as he recently discovered the taste sensation of a pure Vienna beef Chicago style hot dog). My daughter also said that sounded good. So I googled "best hot dogs near Huntley", and the Yelp listings popped up. There wasnt really anything nearby that intrigued me, as I've tried other places (like Tommy's and Big Sammy's) and nobody seems to make a REAL Chicago dog like you get in the city. Nor was I in the mood for a hot dog. So I came across Beef Shack within the generated Yelp search, and I read through several mixed reviews. I figured, what the hell...I'll give it a shot, and maybe I'll find a good Italian Beef nearby (which, again does not exist in this area). We arrived, just after noon, and they were moderate in business. A few cars in the drive through, and a few tables occupied (probably only 8 tables in total for seating). Saw the sign, "Home of the Cheezy Beef". I've seen several other beef joints use that same slogan. I'm still left to wonder, "Which place is the REAL home to the cheezy beef?" I think this was the first issue I had. Walking into the store, my shoes were slipping on their wood-look tile floor. Either this floor is too slick of a surface for customer traffic, or it was not mopped properly and needs a degreaser. Not safe at all. My kids surprised me...no longer did they want hot dogs (so I'll have to go back another time to review their dogs). My son ordered a cheeseburger. The burger is built with lettuce, tomato, and chipotle mayo. I think chipotle mayo is an odd option, and surprised they didn't have onions or pickles (or even ketchup and mustard) as options. He only had lettuce on it (though we did ask for ketchup and mustard after we got the burger). The burger looked nice, it was steaming hot, and he seemed to enjoy it. Though, it looked quite dry and grey in color. I think this was from a frozen patty. My daughter saw "cheezy beef" so she wanted that. I asked the size of the mini, the cashier motioned a size with his fingers, so we decided on the mini with "50% more beef" for an extra charge. When we got her mini beef, it was probably 2 to 3 inches smaller than what I was led to believe...and it WAS mini. I got a "large" beef with 50% more beef and sweet peppers and giardiniera. Maybe I'm used to the size you get at Al's beef in River North, but this was disappointing for the price. In fact, the "50% more beef" upcharge is a scam. I would be very interested to see how much you get in a regular portion. For $30-something total, I found this to be quite overpriced for the portion sizes. All I could taste was salt. I thought it was the beef, but it was really the bread. My bread had what seemed to be a garlic salt seasoning on it. This was definitely unexpected, and displeasing. I'm assuming they made a mistake and gave me the garlic bread? The beef was ok, nothing spectacular. Seemed a bit softer than it should be, and could have used a bit more flavor in the jus. The fresh cut fries...VERY oily. VERY salty. Fresh cut fries are meant to be prepared very specifically. Soaked to remove excess starches, blanched in oil at a lower temperature, then fried at a high temperature to order. I think their process is off, which results in soggy, oily fries. There were a LOT of flies in this place. We were swatting them away as we were trying to eat. Where did they come from? It was too excessive of an amount to accept. I laid out sheets of paper towels as placemats for each of us, mostly to dump the fries onto something. I'm glad I did. I did NOT see a single table get cleaned after a customer left. In fact, the dirty table next to us (where the flies were landing on what looked like either grease or soda spots) became occupied by two new customers. They took a paper towel and simply wiped off the surface. Now it all makes sense why there were so many flies...poor sanitation and cleanliness practices. It makes me wonder if the flies were breeding in the potato box that was sitting directly on the floor behind the line (instead of a minimum of 6 inches as required by health code). Wow...after really thinking things through while writing this review, I don't think I'll be going back to try their Chicago style hot dogs after all. read more

I have never been charged for peppers on Italian Beef before: there is never a charge for them in Chicago, Evanston or any places on the North Shore. They are also free at Rosati's in Huntley. read more

We went thru drive thru at 7pm today. Ordered 2 cheeseburgers and chicken sandwich and mini meal. Got home and all the sandwiches had no bread. Called to talk to manager who said oh yea we ran out. It is my first time here in Beef Shack, I am really impressed with their menu. Their selections are wide and huge. They have plenty offers of comfort foods and it was really great. Beef Shack has burgers, hot dogs, sandwiches, fries, sausages, beef, and others. Their whole menu is really amazing. Everything was on point. Affordable and fair. Their serving is also large and generous. Definitely, the best place to grab a snack and comfort foods. If you are in a hurry or you want to grab a quick breakfast or brunch, Beef Shack is a must! They also have a drive-thru where you can order so easily and go. This place is very convenient. Their staff is decent, fast, accurate, and attentive. They got the orders correct and serve them on time. All of their offers are made to order and cooked to perfection. Beef Shack is phenomenal! They are definitely my new favorite spot here in this area. They even gave me a warm welcome the time I entered the place, they greeted me, smiled at me, and even helped me to find a table. Two strikes and they're out. First issue, ordered two beefs with cheese but got no cheese. Second issue and this one is UNACCEPTABLE. Placed a $30 order. Was told to wait in parking spot #1. Twenty minutes goes by with no food. I go in and they're like a deer in headlights. Had NO IDEA what I was talking about. Said my food probably went to someone else. Chicago Dogs are pretty good; their toppings, however, are ice cold which ruins the hot dog because it too was cold by the time I ate it. Fries are the best in town; BEWARE, this location charges .85 more than the posted price of $3.00 on the menu outside for the dog (on 2-15-21). We have eaten their cheesy beef several times and the last three times it was literally inedible due to way too much salt. After waiting forever, I asked about my food and it was sitting on top of the toasting machine with a bunch of other bags. Tonight my family and I decided to try out Beef Shack. We were starving, Kids were starving and we were eating late. I visited last night at about 7:30 pm, a Saturday. My first sign that I should have been cautious was that there were no other customers that I saw. On the plus side, their drive thru worker was very friendly and courteous. I ordered their cheesy beef and fries and they were just not good. The fries were slightly burnt. The sandwich was dry, had very little meat on it and lacked flavor. Ive had many many beef sandwiches over the years and this is honestly the the worst I've had. This place has gone downhill and they just opened. I just got a cheesy beef and fries. The beef was dry as the desert and the fries were re-fried after sitting around a while. Horrible. Normally the fries are good. We went here in the summer and got two hot dogs. I guess the steamer table was not working because the hot dog was like biting into one that was in the refrigerator uncooked. I brought it back to the window and the woman assured me the next one was good because she saw him make it. Well it WASN'T. It was ice cold same as the first one. All the bad reviews here a bunch of BS. Went today at lunch through drive-thru. We ordered cheesy wet beef on garlic (mini), 2 large fries, a cheeseburger, a vanilla shake and a chocolate shake. Yes we were in the drive-thru for a little bit, but I think this is because they make orders fresh as you order it. It wasn't a bad wait for noontime. The large fries is a HUGE potion, it is enough for 2 people. However, fries were really good...yes a little salty but not overly salty. Cheeseburger was really good, my wife said the cheesy beef on garlic bread was good, not too much pepper in beef and that is why she liked it, I tasted it and would want more pepper on beef but it was pretty damn good. Shakes were good too. This place loses one star because they only have vanilla or chocolate shakes and I love strawberry shakes. They need more shake flavors. read more

I tried this place for the first time today and was a little surprised that for almost $4 you get a typical Chicago style hot dog but without at least a small pinch of fries which is pretty customary and traditional for anyone serving hot dogs at the $4 mark. The Taste was average at best I ordered my dogs with everything on it and expected at least a moderate serving of celery salt which seemed to be non-existent anywhere on this hot dog. Digesting the price of 385 for a hot dog without fries is a little challenging but when you add to that that very little attention to detail is given when preparing the hot dogs to the point where they used stale buns that should have been discarded because they were hard along both ends makes it that much more regrettable of an experience. There are plenty of options around where you get a good flavorful hot dog on a fresh bun with fries for $4 so I will take my business elsewhere. This is a classic example of what happens when you start one restaurant and do well and gain popularity then you try to grow too large to quick without being focused on the quality of the food and the value for the money.
