Stopped in for a quick Tuesday night dinner with my wife. Not really busy, so we had our choice of…read moretables, and were quickly approached by servers re drinks and such. Others did start to arrive during our meal, so the atmosphere livened up a bit as the energy increased. My wife made an "entree" out of 2 starters: Shrimp Scampi and Roasted Mushrooms. Both came piping hot, sizzling in skillets with a good bit of butter, garlic and white wine in each. The shrimp were medium sized, which made them very tender, and they really held onto the pleasingly powerful garlic butter they were bathed in. The same was true of the mushrooms, prepared almost the same, with perhaps a bit less garlic. These were fairly ordinary button mushrooms, cooked whole, but cooked so well that their lack of fanciness didn't matter at all. For myself, I ordered the Steak Milanesa Sandwich, served on their crispy Argentine bread with tomatoes and mayo, plus a liberal dressing of spicy chimichurri that I added myself. It was a good sandwich, but the beef was sliced a bit too thin, becoming tougher than usual during the frying process. It wasn't in any way bad, but I've had it better here at other times. The accompanying French Fries were hot, crisp, salty and just right. The portion (sandwich and fries) is very generous, and quite filling. After oh so many years, LaLa's remains a reliable neighborhood spot, serving good food with a smile -- and it's quite reasonably priced considering the economy and other, more expensive menus in the area.

My steak came well done looking like a flat steak tasting blah and a lot of fat. I had never seen a thin looking ribeye in my life. And she said oh I brought you the 8 ounce, which we didn't even discussed. Nasty steak, poor quality meat. She did apologize but irrelevant when I had to eat that disgusting steak. Been there done that!! Oh and I went to wash my hands and the bathroom said a lot right from the start. There's a sink and next to the sink is a hole to the floor. Weird...... I didn't waste my time taking pictures of this dump.

Delightful! Some…read morecolleagues and I decided to give this place a shot since we work in the area and it had a Dine LA special going on. I could tell from the moment that we were led into the dining room and saw the big grill in the back that this was going to be a fun evening! Before we even ordered, we were offered a cup of vegetable broth as a starter. The broth was excellent, and appreciated despite it being a hot and humid day. I suspect that the composition varies based on the kitchen scraps, but we all agreed that it was great. After the broth, the waiter stopped by to walk us through his recommendations and some background about the restaurant. Even though we were doing Dine LA, he was able to give us some suggestions on pairings, and I apprecaited how he walked us through each item as it was brought to the table. For the first course, we tried both the torta frita with cashew butter, and the chipas with tomato butter. I was impressed with how everythign was thorugh out - the dishes, the butter knives carved out of single pieces of wood. The flowers that popped on the otherwise plain cashew butter, the (if memory serves) toasted buckwheat seeds on the tomato butter. You eat with your eyes first, and mine were feasting while they were laying everything out! The cashew butter was slightly sweet with the honey, and it paired well with the crispy torta. Spreading the butter was a bit awkward, but we made it work. The toamto butter was likewise great. With both breads and butters, what I loved most was actually the combinations of textures. There was thought given to how the ingredients paired together. The crispy torta, for exmaple, was paired with the smooth cashew butter, while the soft chipa was paired with the "crunchy" tomato butter. The second course was likewise impressive. We mixed and matched a number of different appetizers. I can't speak for the empanada (it was devoured before I could try it!), but the hamachi crudo was fresh, tasty, and delicate, and it was fun to watch them pour the sauce on tableside. What was most impressive, however, was the burnt avocado salad, which has the most unique preparation thad I had ever seen. What looks like an unpeeled avocado is actually a peeled avocado that has been charred so that the blackened surface resembles an avocado skin! The char on the fatty avocado paired well with the bitter salad greens and the vinagraite. The crispy onions and candied lemon bits sprinkeld through out were barely visible yet added delightful little flavor bombs and some texture. For the third course, each of the entrees was excellent. Two of us ordered steaks, and I noticed that they didn't ask us for our desired doneness. While some might be squeamish, I appreciated they made the call to serve the meat how they thought was best. Their choice delivered. The steaks were great, tender and well seasoned, and with no strong herbs or spices to hide behind. That said, I tried a bite of the short rib, and I think that was even better! Someone else ordered the pork and paired it with the peppers per the waiters suggestion, and that combiantion was delightful. At the end of the meal, we decided to get deserts, which weren't included with the Dine LA. We ordered a "Ode to DDL" which was basically like a dulce de leche version of molten chocolate cake. Our second desert was a chocolate & Sabayon. I didn't read the menu description carefully enough and didn't realize that the foam... icing? topping? would have a liquor added to it. On its own it was a bit much, but together with the chocolate and the caramel it worked well together. Speaking of which, I attached a photo, but the desert came with a massive piece of caramel crisp that was a lot of fun to break with a spoon! Overall, it was an incredibly enjoyable experience. The food was great, the staff was fun, attentive, and knowledgeable, and the whole restaurant was thoughtfully put together. It was a little pricey, but I think the experience was worth it. We're already planning our next trip back!

We had the cheese bread, the crudo, and empanadas for starters. They were fantastic. The decor of the restaurant is also really nice.. For mains, we had the rock cod which was good, but challenging to eat since it had a lot of bones. But the peppers were great. The avocado salad was good. The only dish that was so so were the artichokes. They just didn't have much flavor. Cocktails were terrific. Service was top notch, it's always nice to watch people work who are great in their job.

But don't let that deter you. Step inside and you'll be greeted with lovely service, good coffee, and Colombian favorites like arepas, buñuelos, empanadas, and Bandeja Paisa. I wasn't very hungry, but after a peek at their fresh baked goods behind the case, I quickly found a seat for myself where I could watch the tennis match on one of many TVs on the wall. Since I'm a sucker for guava, I ordered a bocadillo. It was layered with light cheese and a guava paste that wasn't overly sweet. There was also fresh guava juice and let's not forget the Colombian coffee that had some perk to it. The guava bocadilla had a made-from-scratch flavor, and so did the empanadas de carne. They were delicious and filling. The salsa was more liquid-like, but I couldn't slather enough of it on to my empanada de carne. It was so good, I ordered seconds despite my belly already feeling full. Locals slowly trickled in and before I knew it, the place was full. Every meal that came out - whether it was the banana leaf wrapped tamales that could feed a giant, or the three tier Bandeja Paisa and Montañera platters with arepas on top, each dish looked amazing. So did their lunch menu, which is served weekdays from 11am to 3pm for $14.99 and comes with soup and an entree. There's a quaint gift shop next door where you can buy nicknacks and small Colombian items. As a bookworm and fan of a good story, it was interesting to realize that this quaint little restaurant was named after the fictional town made famous by the Colombian author, Gabriel García Márquez's novel, "One Hundred Years of Solitude". As I sipped on my coffee, I was given time to reflect on my day and enjoyed a sense of solitude at my own table for one.

Our food arrived in a timely manner considering they were pretty full and the time we went. They were pretty busy with many people watching the World Cup games at their restaurant enjoying the ambiance. I ordered a Chicken Arepa (La Rubia) and my friend ordered La Misionera; everything was delicious!!! We got to try their empanadas and pandebono which were soft in the inside and crispy on the outside. Their appetizers had the perfect combo of crunch and flavor. The empanadas and pandebono were my favorite, I took some home to my family and grabbed a few more for the weekend :)

John, the owner, couldn't be nicer. You get the feeling he genuinely appreciates everyone who walks through the door. It's easy to see why so many of the customers seem like longtime regulars. They've been in business for 20+ years, and you understand why once you visit. The restaurant is spacious, clean, and feels fresh. Even during the COVID pandemic, they stayed busy with orders, which says a lot about how loyal their customers are and how good the food is. We enjoyed the empanadas, I think for our group of 5 we ordered at least 20 empanadas and 3 plates to try. I asked a man behind the counter I need a order for 2/3 dozen on Sunday around 12pm. He said not a problem, I should call Sunday at 10 to place the order. I asked "are you sure" he responded it would only take 20 minutes. Problem number 1: No one was answering the phone Sunday morning, I called multiple times. Problem number 2: It take forever to place the order via the website AND there is a superfluous "support local fee" that cannot be opted out. I want this refunded. As someone who invited the group to dinner there Wed where we spent at least $150ish to my order for Sunday around $170, how dare a "support local fee" be added that could have been avoided if someone answered the phone. Problem number 3: The order was 30 mins late. Lack of personal awareness regarding your capability to answer phones and prepare orders on time is a problem. My first and second experience was so vastly different, beyond disappointing, on a day where I am putting things together to host a party it caused unnecessary stress I sent an email and didn't hear back and wanted to post my experience.
