Bear's is an institution. We recently moved back to the Northshore from Denver and we've been checking out new spots and old favorites. Bear's was high on the favorite list and we were certainly hopeful the flavors were unchanged. Good news: they are exactly as wonderful as they always were! I admit, we only ordered one type of poboy: roast beef. Three of them! The meat is sliced thin, plentiful and full of flavor. Mayo amount may be too much for some, but all three of us LOVED the amount of all the fixins, mayo included. Canned Barq's for the win. Whenever I travel I compare every sandwich to a Bear's Po boy. It never works out, but I have to follow my gut. Bears is still the best roast beef sandwich I've ever had in my very long life. If you're traveling through and reading this don't miss your chance to stop at Bear's. They are only open for lunch (10:30 AM till 3 PM I think) Tuesday through Saturday but if you have the chance you will not regret it. And if you're hanging out at Saint Tammany Hospital, like I am right now, right down the street, it's only a mile away, please don't punish yourself by eating in the cafeteria when you can have a Bear's Po boy. read more

Best po boys in town and arguably the best including the entire Southshore. Food is always consistent. I actually prefer the inside being closed because my anxiety would go through the roof having to wait for a table and confronting people that would just come in and sit and completely ignore the people waiting to sit. It's still a hassle everytime I go... but always worth it! Upping the rating to a 5! 12/14/2017 Man... this is the po-boy place on the northshore. The roast beef is kicking, but I always get the Ferdie. It's a roast beef with grilled ham and Swiss cheese on it. Many people complain that there is too much mayonnaise on it, and I agree. I'm just too scared to say "light mayo" for fear of losing the magic. There's always a wait, not enough seating, they're open odd hours, and they don't take credit cards, maybe they do... but there's a fee or something. So the bottom line is... the locals know how it works and call their orders in, they bring cash, and take it back to work to eat it... lol. Previously in 2011, very good po-boys...but very busy at lunchtime and very limited seating and parking. read more

If you are in Covington and see this restaurant is open, do yourself a favor and eat here. It's that good. For some time I have been trying to come to Bear's, but our schedules never worked out. Either they were closed (Mondays and after 3 pm) or I was on the other side of the lake. Well a few weeks ago I was off on a weekday and I finally got to visit. Let me start by saying that I hate made up words. One such word that I see in a lot of reviews is the term "Amazeballs'. I ridicule people who use such ridiculous terms, but I have to say that in this situation it is applicable. Bear's is amazeballs. Now that I've gotten that out of my system I will move on to what you really want to know. Bear's roast beef is a serious contender for best on the Northshore. You won't find any sliced beef here. The shredded beef on my po-boy was rich, garlicy and had a flavor I can only describe as deep. It was much more than just pan drippings converted to a gravy. There was something about that sauce that really set it apart. I will probably never figure it out, but I loved it. From what I've heard the shrimp is just as good as the roast beef, but I don't know if I could ever bring myself to order it after sampling the roast beef. Bear's is an order at the counter and wait for your number to be called type place. That isn't to say that service was poor because it wasn't. The lady behind the counter was sweet, friendly and even offered suggestions on homemade desserts that I politely declined. The last thing I want to mention is actually one of the other reasons it has taken me a while to try Bear's. I don't know if this location is affiliated with the Bear's grill locations, but this restaurant is so far and above better than those places that I would be surprised if they were affiliated. The grill locations are OK, but this place is stellar. Get to Bear's. You will not be disappointed. read more

Believe the hype about this place! It's the best shrimp poboy not only in Covington, but the entire Northshore. It looks like a complete dump when you drive up, but I've learned many of the best meals I've ever had have been in places that look like dumps. You can call in your order if you're in a hurry, because it does take a while when you place your order. They get VERY busy for lunch. I always order shrimp on a bun dressed and add hot sauce and ketchup. The shrimp are perfectly seasoned and crisp. They DO NOT skimp on the shrimp either. It's so overstuffed they are falling out all over the place. I've taken all of the shrimp that are falling out and put them to the side and eaten them for dinner long after my sandwich was gone. THAT'S HOW MUCH SHRIMP IS ON THIS SANDWICH. Ya heard? Sweet baby Jesus it is good. Fantastic! Do yourself a favor and get to Bears! read more

Went in for lunch (only open for lunch tues-fri) & got half of a shrimp poboy (mayo only), a side of fries, and a homemade praline. For a half poboy, the portion is large! Mine had a TON of fried shrimp. Absolutely delicious!!!!! Next time we will skip the fries (they are average) and just get the poboy and a praline. Best praline i've ever had! This place is a Northshore institution, so I imagine part of the appeal is nostalgia and not purely based on the food. People love it, so it's busy all the time. Wait times can get lengthy and it's next to impossible to snag a seat during peak times. The roast beef poboy was delicious, probably one of the best I've ever had. It was melt-in-your-mouth juicy and paired well with the dressings. Since it was so juicy, it had to be eaten ASAP so it wouldn't soak the bread. The shrimp poboy was squarely average and lackluster. The batter was bland and the shrimp tasted off. I won't order this again. I'd eat here again, but it wouldn't be my first choice. read more

I had jury duty this week & Bear's was the restaurant choice one day. They continue to be the BEST place for a roast beef po-boy. It was so good, I returned a few days later because I wanted to get one for my hubby. I attempted, unsuccessfully, to order at 11am but the phone was off the hook. Because there is limited seating as well as limited hours of operation (11-3 Wednesday-Friday) I recommend visiting after 2pm. read more

This joint was really REALLY hyped up to me by various North Shore minions so I came in with probably unrealistically high expectations. My initial impression of the place was that it looked just like a convenience store and the parking was awful. My next impression is they have terrible hours and it was only by a random miracle that I even FINALLY found my way here after MANY years of trying. My next impression is they have a $20 minimum for credit card orders and only offer canned and bottled drinks with no fresh iced tea along with only having counter service. On finally eating the famed roast beef po boy I simply found that it tasted EXACTLY like the Bear's in Metry at Gennaro's except I REALLY think that the Metry location is BETTER as they offer more menu options along with table service, better parking, better environment, better staff, better hours, better location and all around just BETTER in all the ways I can measure anything. This is the best poboy in Louisiana, bar none. I highly recommend the Roast Beef poboy, but you really can't go wrong with any of them.
