What a nice theater to go to. It is on the smaller side, no IMAX or 3D but you don't really need that. The chairs are super comfortable and can lay back! The concessions are what I think reasonable. I took advantage of the combo for 2. 2 sodas and a popcorn for $15. Can't be that. The downside? The bathroom is badly narrow and cramped. read more

My overall experience at the theater was positive, and I would consider returning. The theater was small, but the staff was friendly, and the ticket prices were reasonable. The seating was comfortable and reclinable, although it was evident that the seats had been used frequently. I was seated in Theater 6, which did not have stadium-style seating; I am unsure if this is the case in the other screens. One aspect I found unusual was that seat selection was not available during ticket purchase, which was a new experience for me. Typically, I've been able to choose my seats beforehand, and I found this disappointing. Since this was my first visit to this type of theater where you can not select your seat prior, I arrived about 45 minutes early to secure a good seat, expecting the trailers to start approximately 15-30 minutes before the movie, as is common elsewhere. However, the movie did not start until five minutes after the time on the ticket. I assume the plan was to start on time of the ticket but they were having technical difficulties. Also, I was a little disappointed on the lack of cleaning in between movies. There was still a lot of popcorn and trash I could see underneath the seats. Overall, I enjoyed my visit, but I now have a better understanding of what to expect in future visits. Specifically, arriving closer to 20 minutes before showtime (time of the ticket). read more

Went to see a movie there over the weekend. Popcorn was cold and the theater I was in had a group of loud and disrespectful teenagers that wouldn't stop talking. While their parents did nothing. Myself along with 4 other people complained and I was told, " they'll see what they can do. Their manager is gone for the night." They never came in and did anything about it. I myself shushed these kids because no one else would. They finally kicked the group out only because a friend of a worker said something. read more

Hubby and I went to see the movie "Twisters" today for a 1:30pm show. As soon as we walked in the front door, we were greeted by a friendly face behind the counter. We had purchased tickets online, and thank goodness we did! The show was sold out! We got our print out from the young woman, and found two seats in the middle of the theater. We were tickled to have good seats. The theater was nice and cool, and the seats are amazing!! They recline, they are leathery, and so soft and comfortable! The movie started and the sound was terrific. The picture was clear, I had a great view of the screen, and the popcorn was yummy!! The bathrooms were clean, the floor was not sticky, and we were pleased all around with the experience today. After the movie was over and the lights came back on, the staff immediately started cleaning and sweeping the popcorn and trash off the floor. I am so sorry this has to be done-if folks would clean their own trash that would be good. But all in all, we were happy with the movie, the ambiance, and the staff. Good job, Bear Town! read more

I haven't been to a movie at this theater in many years, but did not want to miss seeing Wicked. Overall, the theater is just rundown. Even though they have supposedly remodeled, and made some upgrades (reclining seats, etc.), it was in much better shape back when it was Southgate Cinema. Popcorn was stale and flavorless, drink was flat, seats weren't working. Two employees we interacted with at the counter had very little communication skills. read more

Went to see a movie yesterday (Theater #2) and halfway through the movie stopped working. Had to go out and tell someone. They started the movie again, stopped again, this time I went out to tell someone and someone in a ratty blue sweatshirt came out and said that 1) he knew it was having troubles last week, 2) they shouldn't have been selling tickets, didn't know they were, 3)offered ZERO apology, just money back. This wasted not only our time, but now we've seen half a movie and wasted money on concessions FOR the movie. Really sad that this person really did not seem to care that they had annoyed their customers. This is all too bad because we were loving this theater. Now we cannot trust it or it's people. EDIT: I am upping my points as the manager contacted me today to offer an apology and compensation for the issues we had. It is my hope that she has a conversation with that person who may need more training in customer service. read more

This is the only theater that I've ever been to where I got semi-warm, sure it was old popcorn and cold butter. Other than that it's ok. Just wish they'd fix the popcorn issue. read more

The popcorn stand ran out of salt and charged the same. We were given the option to purchase seasonings at $1.35. Imagine eating dry flavorless popcorn! Ruins the whole experience! Last time I was here the bathroom had NO toilet paper in any of the stalls! read more

Great theater! I did not know what to expect when we walked into the building, but the theater was clean and updated! The modern, reclining seats were very comfortable. There were not a lot of people at our showing, but it was a weeknight. We did not have to wait in line for anything. Food was good, and I think they even sell wine. read more

I am only giving it 1 stars for convenience of location. The theatre is filthy all the time. I went into a movie and someone has spilled a soda by the entrance. I told someone that worked there and they put a wet floor sign on it. When I came out of the theatre the soda was still there with the wet floor sign. It wasn't busy. When I went back up to the counter to ask another question one of the guys was eating popcorn out of his hand that he seemingly reached in and got directly from the machine. The theatre seats has popcorn on it from the previous movie. It was just FILTHY. Not worth the $90 for the tickets and snacks. On another occasion, the Bruin was showing a movie that wasn't at Bear Town so we went there. SOOOOOO Much cleaner. Professional kids working. 100% better. I'll only go there even though it's further from my house. Just foul. Don't waste your money. read more

This was our first time back at the theater since Covid and this theater was a great reminder why it's nice to see new movies on the big screen. The only thing I wish this theater would improve in is the temperature inside the screening room. It was a bit too warm for us. read more

Southgate Cinema 6, like so many other small-town theaters, is good. "Good", meaning that they don't really compare to the larger purpose-built modern cinemas that spoil you with huge screens and killer sound systems. But this is a small town and people don't have unlimited budgets to build super-theaters, and it seems to service the community well. The main thing keeping this from being a four-star experience was the seating. It wasn't horrendous, but it did remind me of the seating in a Soviet-era Ilyushin jet aircraft I flew some years ago in the Middle East. I didn't sample the food and drink, but they appeared to have usual theater fare; soft drinks, popcorn and candy. read more

We saw Beauty and the Beast in theater 5. It was pretty disgusting. The seats were old, stained, dirty, broken and uncomfortable. Some had old, dried gum stuck to them. The floors were also dirty. The auditoriums needs to be fully renovated. Also, the green emergency lights along the aisles should be dimmed. I realize they need to be visible but they were so bright it distracted from the film if you were sitting in the first five seats by the aisle. read more

Recently changed name to Bear Town Cinema and with that lots of renovations, and I am loving them. New screens, sound, bathrooms, concession, and the outside is looking good. Seating hasn't been replaced thus far, but hopefully... All the staff is young but friendly, so you get that small town feel. It is a small complex, but hey it's better than nothing. Concession choices are good and prices still lower than the bigger cinemas in bigger cities. read more

Movie started almost forty minutes late. Audience had to inform the staff to get the movie going, then instead of skipping right to the film we had to sit through the local ads, the pre-preview movie questions, and previews. Stealing the audience's time is not cool. The decor has been updated which is an improvement. Staff was polite although not particularly responsive. Prices are reasonable. read more

Enjoyed the movie here with the kids. Seating is old school but it was still a nice, clean theater. I hope they upgrade to Stadium seating soon though. I recently visited this theater to see Little. The theater was clean and the staff was accommodating, however, the movie stopped while it was playing and we had to wait for it to be fixed. The fix was very quick tho. I would visit again. read more

Just left this place. Worst movie experience I've ever had. We are visiting New Bern and this was the only theater we could find nearby. From the outside it didn't look like much, but the inside had clearly been renovated. Nice concession area and new bathrooms. The theaters are small and the seating is old, but we were okay with all of that. What we weren't okay with is that 15 mins before the end of the movie the projector shut down. There appeared to be only three employees, none of which looked older than 16 years old. One of the employees made it sound like they didn't realize anyone was in the theater and they were shutting it down for the night. While the other employee said "the projector powered down." They made some feeble attempts to turn it back on and then tried to placate us by giving us free movie passes. But being out-of-towners we demanded a refund, which they did give us. So if you're local and this is the only option you have, I'm sorry. But if you're visiting New Bern, skip this place. Otherwise you may end up seeing half a movie and have to wait for it to come out on Redbox in order to see how it ends. And the only reason I gave it two stars instead of one was because the employees were nice and we did get our money back. read more

Just recently went to see Captain America: The Winter Soldier there for my birthday part with a large group of friends. It was all comfortable, and the popcorn and drinks good, but the movie time changed three times within one week. If you are scheduling a group viewing of a movie, be sure to check the time the time of the movie the morning you plan to see it to confirm that the time didn't change on you. It's better to find out and make everyone aware than to show up and be unprepared and surprised that the show time me changed. A problem we've had in the past is movie trailers that seemed to be inappropriate for the movies. R rated at a G movie for example. So Bear Town, please keep the show times consistent and also maybe be a bit more careful with trailers appropriateness per film. read more

I watched Aquaman at this theater. The "music" audio was ok, however the "vocal" audio was very poor. At times, the voices could not be understood due to the overwhelming volume of the music. Also, the paper towel rolls in the restrooms have been placed on the vanity top, instead of in the wall dispensers. This situation has been ongoing for the better part of a year. The only major drawback to this theatre is it's size. It only runs six screens. Not bad for me, coming back from the one screen theatres of Okinawa. They run a children's program during the summer. They play a FREE movie for kids at 1000 every Tuesday and Thurday during the summer. They also have matinee prices for movies before 5pm. The lobby and restrooms were clean. The prices on snacks were standard fare. The seating was decent but could possibly use a refurbishing some time soon. read more

I am a big fan of Bear Towne Cinema. It may be the biggest theater in New Bern, but at only 6 screens, it's much smaller than the average theater you'll find in another city. Despite that, it is a cozy place to watch the newest Hollywood blockbusters. While they can't compete with the variety of other theaters, the tickets and snacks are much cheaper than any other theater I've been to. The newly renovated concessions stand will satisfy all of your snacking desires. The staff is friendly and helpful, always keeping the queue moving quickly so you don't have to spend an eternity waiting in line. As other reviewers have mentioned, the seats have definitely seen better days, but what they lack in looks, they make up for in comfort. Two and a half hours passes by in an instant in these chairs. If you're in town and want to catch a movie, you can't go wrong with this place. read more

I'm pleasantly surprised! This theatre has obviously been renovated, and they did a good job. This is a small, older theatre that has been maximized. It's quaint, clean, and comfortable. And it's only $6.00 for matinee tickets! (Showtime before 6pm). I really enjoyed the experience and will return. read more

This movie theater is not the biggest, the best, neither the most fancy ones I've been to. But this movie theater is one of the cheapest theaters I've been to since I left the city and decided to move down in New Bern. It's one of the places I go to watch a huge premier like Jurassic World. Nothing went wrong and everything was great. The seats are great and the female bathroom is clean. Don't know about the males restroom. If you want to watch something in the negihbor, then I recommend this place. It's not soo bad. read more
