There will be no quippy intro to this review today boys and girls, so prepare yourself for a rapid fire-ish read: Mochas are really a tricky beverage to master. They require a delicate balance of an espresso bite while incorporating just slightly more than a hint of chocolate undertones . If properly done, these flavors will swirl around your palette and reward you with a rather invigorating semi sweetened caffeine jolt. If not, one component ultimately overwhelms the other (but you still might get caffeinated). Mochas gets even trickier when served cold. Although the ice adds a nice layer of refreshment (and a delayed but awesome coffee buzz), it mutes the flavors. Therefore, you can imagine my delight with The Beanery's iced mocha. Stopped by The Beanery this morning as my wife and I had just a little extra time before heading to work. She ordered a plain bagel with cream cheese and some sort of latte; I just asked for a turkey and cheddar, warmed. Figured we would be in and out in under 5 minutes as we were the third ones in line and requested it to go. Sadly, we waited for at least 10 minutes before our orders were prepped. Not only that but my wife's bagel was burnt. Initially thought it was a chocolate bagel but soon realized there was no such thing on the menu. We frequent a lot of local businesses in Alameda and our two past visits here have been somewhat ok. We don't sugarcoat our reviews and unfortunately, The Beanery flopped today. The beanery is my go to spot whenever I need to get some work done. The coffee is good, the food is decent, and if you're in the mood for something else, you have all of Alameda Marketplace just a few steps away. If you come during busy hours, the staff is a lot less attentive, but that's understandable since they have a lot going on. It was kind of annoying since it took 5 minutes to get a cup of water, but it is what it is. When it's less busy, everyone is extremely nice and helpful! Overall, the coffee is good, but once in a while there are some drinks that are hit or miss. I do not recommend getting the peppermint bark mocha. It was so sweet that it hurt my throat, but since the line was so long I couldn't really say anything. But when I asked for water, it took five minutes. BUT despite this one bad drink, I still love this place. Being a popular coffee shop, the environment is a lot more hectic than your typical chill coffee shop. There are tons of people going in and out all the time. Also, random but their tables are really cute. They're filled with coffee beans haha. Also, side note, the last time i was there, the owner said he was upgrading the wifi! It's already pretty fast, so I can only imagine how good it is now! I've been trying to find a good coffee and breakfast place in Alameda and this is it. I had the petit egg sandwich and I ate it so fast I forgot to take a picture. The coffee is good. The barista knows his stuff so that a caffe latte is a caffe latte and a cappuccino is a real cappuccino: not a glorified latte. I wish I could come here more often but I am happy I finally found it. The Vietnamese Iced Coffee is AMAZINGGGG!! It gets me so wired for work. My coworkers have no idea what to do with me. I recommend the BLT on white with cheddar too. The mixed greens and tomatoes are usually in good proportion with the bacon. Sometimes you go places and people make them with too much bacon... Since my last post I've seen improvement at the beanery. They've hired staff with better customer service practices. The coffee still isn't anything to write home about, but it's convenient and definitely bad. Also, the pastries are the bomb! So is the little Mediterranean sampler they carry. Was here again recently on a busy weekend morning. The coffee is still dark and very good quality. The sandwiches are well made and tasty. They still haven't changed their service regarding food ordered off the menu. You grab a seat with your coffee and have no idea if your food order is ready or not without having to walk up to the counter to see if your food is there. Loved their Vietnamese iced coffee. I have yet to try all the other items here but so far so good! The market is right next door if you want to do some grocery shopping, very convenient. They have a seating area inside but not a ton of space. Basically just enough room to finish your coffee & cake (if that's what you like) & then wander around Park Street. Edit Update 4.24.18 Tue. I've come here a few times now and the chai tea latte is very tasty! No sediment at the bottom that you have to stir with your straw, they make sure everything is well mixed together for a complete flavor, which I appreciate. Yelp keeps asking me to update my review. So here it is. Well, since then I've ordered their Spicy Chicken plate. It's finger-lickin' delicious. From the dressing on the salad to the chicken & hummus. The entire plate is amazing. I've also been ordering their petite egg ham sandwich almost every morning. Now that right there my friends is heaven. It's how it all marries together, the egg ham, more ham and the melted cheese and English muffin holding it all together. It's a simple more than satisfying morning sandwich. Once I had to order a second sandwich to go, I just knew I was going to want another later in the day. My husband and I come in almost every day for their Americanos. The coffee here at the Beanery is hands down better than any other chain coffee shop people are typically used to. Stopped by here with my daughter on Friday morning for breakfast. Beautiful place! Had an onion bagel and juice and daughter had the breakfast bagel. The space had some tables, so we sat for a few minutes. The counter server was very nice and welcoming. The place was buzzing with soccer on t.v. and the morning rush, but everyone was waited on in a timely manner. Next time I visit I will definitely plan on staying longer and enjoy the surroundings. read more

I am a die hard supporter of the beanery. When I was in college, I frequented their Berkeley location and I would walk miles just to get coffee from this place. Today, it's no different, I am just closer to the alameda location. I don't know what they do to those beans but I swear nothing else I've tried has come close to how good the coffee is here and I LIVE for coffee. Even the most bougie af places with all their aesthetic and crazy machines cannot hold a candle to the beanery. And you know what's best ? They don't charge obscene prices for a latte, or coffee. I know you think coffee is expensive everywhere now but that's exactly my point. In comparison to these other Bay Area/ sf shops, they have kept their prices reasonable. In honor of National Coffee Day this past Sunday, I had to get coffee of some type. Not my usual soy chai tea latte, but something with actual COFFEE in it. Yelp said this place had an amazing iced mocha, so off Boyfriend and I went to Alameda to give the place a try. It's in the Marketplace co-op, tucked into the front left corner (if you're facing the building from Park Street). There is a parking lot, so parking was easy enough to find (thank goodness, because parking on Park Street - ironically - is freaking ridiculous at best). The customer service from the barista was nothing exceptional, but she was friendly enough while I placed my order of a small soy iced mocha and a medium iced coffee. My iced mocha was made fresh! You could tell because the ice hadn't fully chilled it yet, so part of my mocha was a not-warm-but-not-cold hybrid. Luckily, it didn't take away from the taste. I think their mocha may be made with dark chocolate because it was sweet but not overly so. Very smooth. I would totally go back and get it again! read more

I love this place, I am a regular, and I get the same thing every time. It's getting to the point the staff asks me if I'm my drink again and things go really smoothly. Love it! I eat lunch here occasionally too, I love the mediterranean sampler, and the veggie organic sammie. Those are my favorite things to order besides the great coffee. It's one of the few places my husband can get a really great cappuccino, with soy milk, since we have milk allergies. I always order almond milk because of the 30 or so fewer calories ;) It adds up, right?! The place is a joke. I went there recently to get a smoothie. When I saw my drink being done, I realized the use mixers, and not real fruit. I was really upset about it since they are located in a building called "Alameda Natural Grocery". When I talked to the owner expressing my disappointment of not being transparent, he argued that is honest bc when customers ask, he would say they don't use real fruit, but they don't say that in their menu. When you see written "smoothie" you expect to get real fruit, especially if you are located in a building where they sell natural and organic products. As a customer, I shouldn't have to ask. The owner also argued their mixers are all natural, but when I tried the smoothie you could tell it was filled with artificial flavors. At the end, he didn't like my point, he took it personal, and rudely he told me leave. The only positive is that I got my money back. Final question: if they are not transparent with their smoothies, what else are they not going to be transparent with? In response to the below claims made by the owner: - "we proudly use products that are either all natural or organic". If that is true, why didn't you show me your product and read me its ingredients when I was there? - "we are always 100% transparent with our customers". I don't think you are transparent when you don't use real fruit, and you omit to say that in your menu. - "didn't appreciate your disruptive behavior". My behavior was not disruptive, you simply cannot take constructive criticism, and that's why you took it personally. You didn't ask me to leave, you pointed your finger to the exit and told me to leave. There's a difference between asking and giving orders. - "judging by all the 1-star reviews you've given other local cafes" I only gave one bad review to a local cafe, and I gave it for a specific reason. Based on your claim, you clearly didn't read my review. Therefore, you shouldn't comment on something you didn't properly read. This place is bumpin' on Saturday mornings! They make a good americano and I LOVE their French sandwiches. The jambon brie is my favorite. They will even warm it up so the cheese is melted just enough. Their case of pastries is quite a sight and my daughter adores the chocolate croissant. All I got to say is that this is one of the best coffee places I ever tried! Yesterday was the first time I ever tried there coffees I'm usually picky with my iced americanos, I get disappointed when they taste really watered down and not creamy when half n half is added. When i got mines yesterday you can definitely taste the espresso beans which is super flavorful and with the half n half it just topped it off perfectly, I got my mom the Mayan mocha she always had a thing for us iced Mexican mochas and when she tried this one this blew her away she said it's completely unique and better than the ones she usually gets at various coffee shops, when I had a small sample I was very impressed with how flavorful it was and was caught off guard with the little kick of cayenne pepper after the sip which was amazing!! It's a super cute coffee shop I also love the desserts case I got my parents the almond raspberry bar which they enjoyed where I had to purchase two of them. I visit here every day for my morning non-fat latte, and am heartened by the friendly service, the fair prices and the great coffee.
