Many visitors to the local DMV made a habit of stopping by. It was a beloved local landmark. NO MORE! I had stopped by about six months earlier and noticed a sign that stated it was closed due to an issue with the ovens. I stopped by yesterday and found it open. No one was manning the counter, and the man in the back offered no help. After a five-ten minute wait, and frequent gesturing to the man-in-the-back I finally caught his attention. He could not understand a word of English, but "pointed" to the rear of the building. Eventually a woman appeared. I just wanted a slice of pizza. There were no posted prices for this. I wound up ordering two slices of pizza and a coke. The price was a hefty $11.00. I thought this a bit high but remembered the "old" price was around $5. When the woman brought the pizza out I immediately noticed the "slices" were about three inches wide. (Think a Costco slice cut in half.) The crust is thin and tasteless, and the pieces had obviously been sitting in the display case all day. The worst pizza I've ever had. Avoid this place as you would the plague. NB: the Coke was okay tho.

We then took a moment to admire the kitschy decor all around. If you are familiar with Chuy's restaurants, the murals depicting SoCal surf life also cover the walls and ceiling here. The artwork boarders on graffiti inspired paint can strokes, but there were no dangling scuba divers here, keeping it cleaner and a bit more cozy, for such a large dining area. Food came out pretty quickly and my meatball sub was far from the "simple" sandwich I pictured. Firstly, it's only described as "Meatball in sauce with provolone cheese", simple. I think they should hype this up a bit more. It was 3 golfball size meatballs in sauce, nestled into a carved out, fresh baked French roll, covered with 3 slices of provolone then baked until bubbling and cheese slightly brown. The "top", cut away crust of the French roll was also slightly baked and set along side the meatball "base." THE BEST MEATBALL SANDWICH I'VE EVER HAD! Not only were the meatballs tasting from scratch with a nice weight and flavor, but the sauce was light and not soaking the bread to the point of destruction and the cheese was perfectly baked to hot, gooey, goodness. Now, suddenly very hungry, I decided a fork was the best way to attack this beast. Hubs calzone could be best described as garlic butter goodness slathered over the folded pizza crust, which gently enveloped ham and cheese. He was very happy as well. By 8:15 our food was gone. Devoured. We noticed someone else came in about this time and they told him carry-out only. So, be aware, if they close at 9, they are CLOSED AT 9! There are a lot of things to try. I recommend coming here and checking out the appetizers. Everything for the pepperoni rolls to the combination platter. I've waited a while before posting this review because I wanted to be fair and separate the emotions surrounding our visit from the actual experience. The first day we stopped in, the drink machine was being replaced and the restaurant wasn't open. That was completely understandable. What was disappointing was the attitude we received from the young staff when we simply asked when they expected to reopen. We got the typical "I don't know" response, and when we tried asking a couple of follow-up questions for clarification, they seemed annoyed and really weren't interested in helping. We aren't from the area and had specifically made the trip over because of what this place meant to my mom. We figured the first experience was just an off moment, so we came back the next day when they were open. Unfortunately, the same general attitude from the young staff carried over and really took away from the experience. The food itself wasn't the problem--it was the lack of friendliness, hospitality, and basic customer service. Of course, they had no way of knowing why we were there, and we certainly didn't expect or feel the need to explain that we had just buried our mom. But that's also the point: you never really know why someone has walked through your door or what that visit might mean to them. I wish our experience had been different, especially because Cosentino's held such good memories for our family and for my mom. Unfortunately, this visit didn't live up to those memories. There were maybe two or three other tiny shrimps. They charge $20 per small/personal pizza. I think they could add a few more shrimps. My wife got the Adobo. She loved it. I liked it. We took three pizzas home, The Pig, Root, and Black Garlic. Because the pizzas are thick, they keep and warm up very well. Maybe even better than fresh if you do it right and in the oven. The pig was good. Again, not enough meat. Root was okay and lacked depth and any noticeable mushroom flavor. Black garlic was amazing. Even though they call it a cheese bread and it's in the sides section, it's the same size as the pizza and really feels like a pizza.
