We came here for brunch and really enjoyed everything we got. I had the simple breakfast which came with scrambled eggs, bacon or sausage, potatoes (tots), English muffin and mixed greens. Everything was great. The eggs were hot when they came out, the bacon was crispy and the tater tots had good seasoning and were also crispy. The waitress was quick to take our drink order and quick to tell me to take off my hat. I wasn't going to fight it, but I wasn't happy. My hair was a mess, and I'm not affiliated with no gang! Any who, the drinks came quick and I was a huge fan of the choice of any brunch entree and 3 drinks for $19.95! Pretty good deal. However, drinks weren't very strong. This establishment overcharges for NYS Sales Tax (NYS sales tax is 8.875%). To preface, I am in the restaurant industry myself, and have been managing for upwards of 10 years at a reputable restaurant group. My wife and I dined here for brunch today (10/31) and when the bill came ($55 subtotal), I saw that the tax was rounded up ($5 instead of the accurate $4.88). When I approached the restaurant about it, I was directed to the Owner, who became very defensive. He made it about the $0.12 that I "couldn't afford", moreso than me being concerned about his business practices and every table that he "Rounds up" on/profits from the additional sales tax. It is a shame, as the food here is good (especially the brunch special). My goal here is to let people know about this shady business practice, and you can choose for yourself whether this practice matters to you or not, but I myself will not be going back. This review is solely about getting drinks - no food was ordered. We sat outside at beach cafe for drinks on a Sunday. The waiter couldn't answer any questions about what the bar could make and no cocktails were on the menu, although the have a full bar. Two members of my party went to the bar to order drinks there and said the bartender didn't seem to be happy to answer their questions. I ordered a spicy margarita, a classic summer drink, the waiter said they could do that. What I got was a margarita with red pepper flakes in it. It was a little funny and honestly not horrible, just not what I ordered and that was not communicated to me. Pedestrian. I live near here and always see a large crowd of people eating here and waiting for tables so I figured this would be good, despite the not so great Yelp ratings. Disappointment soon set in. Beach Cafe has a large amount of outdoor seating, maybe even more than their regular indoor seating, and has a nice overall outdoor setup. They do a good job with social distancing by keeping the tables 6 feet apart and having plexiglass barriers between tables. Hand sanitizer was present at all tables. Service was friendly and efficient but that's where the positives end. First, they ran out of French toast. It was one of the few brunch items on the menu that seemed really appealing. We went out around 1pm so not late in the day or anything. Second, though we didn't run into this problem during this outing since my father paid, but the menu is not patron friendly. There are notices on the menu saying that they don't split checks or do multiple credit cards, they charge a plate sharing fee, they add an automatic gratuity of 20% for parties of 5 or more, and a lot of the regular items are a la carte. Most restaurants don't mind splitting checks and processing multiple cards. I understand for a large party that a restaurant wouldn't want to charge 10 cards, but 2 cards doesn't seem outrageous. An automatic gratuity for a party of 5 is almost unheard of. Five isn't that large of a party and to make the gratuity 20% is not right. Most places only charge an automatic gratuity for larger parties (minimum of maybe 6 but usually 8) and cap it at around 18%. Throughout the menu there are notices about charges for plate sharing and that you can't transfer drinks. While I understand why that is put in place, it doesn't present a welcoming atmosphere if you're afraid to trade a bite of an entree with someone you're dining with. For the food, it's typical ok brunch food. As mentioned before, they were out of French toast at only 1pm. I feel like that's too early to be out of something for a place that advertises brunch until 3:30/4pm. Since we were in the mood for something sweet, we decided to start with a blueberry muffin basket. Big mistake since the muffins tasted store bought from a chain grocery store. I had the plain and simple brunch special (with 3 alcoholic beverages) which came with eggs, English muffin, sausage/bacon, a salad, and cottage fries. The portions were really small as it was maybe 2 medium scrambled eggs, 3 or 4 cottage fries (they're shaped like bread and butter pickle chips), a few leaves of lettuce, and 2 of the skinniest breakfast sausages ever. The taste of everything wasn't horrible, but everything tasted sort of bland. The drinks were decent as the bloody mary was on the spicier side, which I prefer. However, the draft beer appears to be a rip off as they're poured into a smaller glass. Overall, not impressed with Beach Cafe, especially since there are many other better spots close by that are more customer friendly. read more

I came here for brunch with some friends while visiting the city and while I had a great time catching up with my girls I was not impressed by this place at all. For starters, we were a party of 7 and they couldn't split the check. It's 2018 get a machine that can split the checks that's a little ridiculous. Since we had a large party they automatically included a 20% tip and that's exactly how the waiters acted. They knew they were guaranteed tip so they did the bare minimum. The food was pretty good but if you're wanting to stay satisfied or full for a while I wouldn't recommend coming here as the portions are not that big and I'm not trying to sound greedy, I'm a small person and it doesn't take a lot to get me full but, I left this place still hungry I went and got more food somewhere else right after. The good thing about this place is the cheap brunch special. $20 for 3 drinks and an entree. Not a spot to go to if you want to do a day brunch party but definitely if you're looking to catch up with friends or family over a light brunch. The "waiter" tells me if your friend (my sister) wants to take a bite of your burger you will be charged $5 because we have a "burger sharing policy." Thinking he was joking I literally laughed in his face which led him to saying "I don't know why you're laughing I'm being serious." I'm sorry never again. Disgusting rude and awful service. If you want better food & service just cross the street to 5 napkin burger. Please don't waste your time or energy here. On top of the horrible service the food was disgusting believe me nobody will want to willing steal a bite. The coke I ordered was flat and the fries tasted like they were old fries that were refried. They were overly salty and beyond oily. The burger I ordered which you would you think would be the best/ safest food order since it's named after the place was served on buns you could get from a grocery store. Forget the buns, the meat looked also refried and disgusting. I genuinely do not know how this place has any business or is allowed to stay open. This was one of my favorite spots. The wine Dave the owner was a gentleman and it was truly a pleasure to support his business. Chris, the bartender was amazing. He gave you the fine dining feel. Came here for brunch on Sunday with my boyfriend a little before noon. It was not crowded at all and there were a few tables open outside (which is where we wanted to sit). We walked in and Dave who I believe is the manager told us it would be a few minutes and to wait by the bar. So we walked inside and waited by the bar. Well 15 minutes passed and I watch Dave seat other customers who walked in after us outside. Finally, when he caught my glare he came over and said "are you waiting for a table?" Baffled, I told him "yes you told us to wait inside by the bar." He finally sat us outside and we were ready to get some brunch. Once we were seated the waiter took a while to come over to us. There was only one waiter for the entire outside seating area. While we were waiting another table of 2 girls were seated and the waiter went over and took there orders before us. When the waiter finally came over to take our order we ordered the brunch special which is $19.95 for an entrée and 3 drinks. We both order bloody marys and I ordered the eggs benedict and he ordered the huevos rancheros. The food came out very quickly. The eggs benedict were good and cooked correctly but it literally came with 10 potatoes and the smallest most pathetic salad. I tired the huevos rancheros and it was pretty tasty but very small as well. Overall, the food was good but very small portions but the service was really slow and crappy. It was definitely annoying when people were seated before us who came in after us and when the waiter was taking peoples orders from people who sat after us. I might go back but I will have to try the many other places in the UES that offer brunch specials. read more

A coworker and I visited this restaurant for the first time during our lunch break on Thursday (5/13/21). We were told to sit at a fairly small two seater table and requested a 3-4 person table as we usually order appetizers with our meals and I had a fairly large bag. The worker who seated us told us we could not sit at a larger table because there was only two of us and proceeded to sit another two party group at a four seater table 5 minutes after saying that (two tables away from us). It was clear to us that this restaurant has discriminatory practices and we were completely disgusted by the lack of respect we received. We do not recommend this restaurant for people of color or that do not appear affluent. Also would like to add that we came for the lobster roll that is advertised on a huge banner at the side of the restaurant. My major complaint is that they have so many people working here and not enough customers so we had like 4 people waiting on our table which was so confusing because I was on a different page with each waiter. I had no idea who to ask for the check, ask for refills of drinks, or ask for additional sides for my order. The portions were also huge which is okay but you could cut down the size and charge less. This is a great restaurant with great food, great presentation, strong drinks and cool beach bum atmosphere. They have a brunch deal that can't be beat, 3 drinks and a main course for $29.50. The place is located near the Q train 72nd Street subway stop so you can take in some scenic homeless people on the way over. I had an egg dish which came in a mound with all kinds of goodies in it. Nonet had a salad which was really beautifully presented. She said it was one of the best she ever had. Chose this restaurant because it was in close proximity of my daughters college. NY City School of Interior Design. The Lunch Menu does include some brunch offerings. Two of us ordered the Cheeseburger. Marketed as the Best Cheeseburger in Manhattan. So I had to try the Bacon Cheeseburger, It was cooked perfectly. Bacon was nice and crispy. My best bet is this was a fresh patty not frozen. I would give this burger a strong 8.5 out of a ten. Would and will have that again. I believe the cheeseburger was $14 and the Bacon CB was $16. Not bad for Manhattan. Also ordered was the FRENCH TOAST AMERICANA. This was ridiculously delicious. 10 out of 10. Next was the CHICKEN & WAFFLES. The waffle was cooked to order, was soft fluffy and awesome. The Chicken was lightly breaded and deep fried to perfection. Perfect Dish. Another 10 out of 10. Nice choice of salads!
