Came here on a nice Wednesday night weatherwise. Their happy hour is all day on Wednesdays which is a plus and they have a number of bar bites discounted $3-5 dollars. My BMP calamansi margarita was distinct in its tanginess. Tried the veggie lumpias and brussel sprouts. The lumpias had tangy dipping sauce that might have been dominated by calamansi. More tang than savory. The brussel sprouts were standard but had a good portion. I tried to detect whether they used fish sauce but I couldn't tell. Ordered the daing na bangus (milkfish) as my entree. They gave me the whole fish and it threw me off that it was mostly deboned since I kept looking for the bones with my tongue and teeth. Fish was nice and crispy and the dipping sauce was more savory than what came with the lumpias. The garlic rice that came with the dish was smoky from that wok hay. Probably could have used a little more soy sauce for flavouring. My favourite dish was the turon dessert (fried bananas) along with the ube ice cream. The coconut sauce they used seemed more like caramel. I haven't eaten much Filipino food so I wasn't sure how authentic the dishes were. I was expecting a little more intensity in the flavours, and I don't know if it was toned down for their customers. There were around ten customers that night. The adobo chicken, was not super flavorful beyond being a little salty and the rice portion that it came with was not large. Most of the flavor was in the broth at the bottom but it was so runny that it would have made my rice too soggy to try and eat it alongside the chicken. The pork silog was my favorite the egg on the top was good and there was a decent portion of pork over the top, but it was pretty greasy. There's not many Filipino spots inside the loop, so Be More Pacific is definitely unique in that way (there's a few but definitely not many). Located on Yale in a slightly secluded parking plaza. There is plenty of parking available up front. The interior is a bit less modern and more weary than expected; the booth seats cracking at the seams and look fairly tired, to start. Our group came in for lunch and was and remained the only group that came for lunch service; that was a bit surprising. We ordered family style and got a few dishes including adobo, kare kare, pancit, lumpia, cola adobo, brussel sprouts, and Filipino BBQ (beef short ribs). Overall, the food was fairly average. Kare kare ranked the lowest out of everything we ordered, fairly bland, presentation wasn't exactly super appealing, and just missing flavor and seasoning. After many years, we finally had a chance to come try BMP. In short, we'll be back! This morning was some brunch, and we both had the BMP breakfast featuring two eggs, bacon, one house made longannisa, garlic rice, and ube pancakes with coconut syrup. The eggs were great with a sublime runny yolk, bacon was a little on the limp side, longannisa was unique and less sweet than normal, and the garlic rice was yummy with a definite butter undertone. Star of the breakfast was the ube pancakes though and that coconut syrup was reminiscent of Singaporean Kaya spread. Oh, and we also tried the crispy fried musubi, which we both enjoyed. The only downside, besides the limp bacon, was not letting us know that the diced Thai chilis would be a $1 charge. I don't mind the buck, but would be nice to let folks know up front. read more

Be More Pacific, a Filipino American café in the Heights on Yale, is a place I've had on my list for a while. I was intrigued by the idea of a more contemporary spin on Filipino cuisine. I've tried Jollibee before, but somehow I think that doesn't really count. Haha. From the outside, the place looks interesting with cool signage and outdoor seating. The seating outside wasn't occupied at the time, of course, because it was way too hot outside--95 degrees plus, with humidity off the charts. Immediately upon walking in, I was thrown off by two things: the dim lighting and the unoccupied and un-staffed bar situated right next to the door. Having stood there for a while (3 minutes plus, I would say), I wondered if this is the kind of presentation the owners want. I literally did not see any other staff initially aside from the one waiter on the floor. But on to the food: Lumpia (Shanghai) [3/5]: I thought the Lumpia (shrimp and pork), described as the Shanghai variety, was good, but instead of 6 full pieces, it was really more like 4 full pieces with two halves. The sauce is rather sweet with a kick. I tend to prefer savory sauces, but I did enjoy this sauce. Crispy Spam Musubi [4/5]: I love Spam Musubi and was excited to try Be More Pacific's take on it. The Musubi, which appeared to be deep fried, has the following ingredients: a house-made version of Spam, rice, nori and Panko crust with Musubi sauce. I thought this Musubi was kind of on the dry side in the interior and it seemed to be missing flavor. The sauce is good but could use either some kick or another savory dimension. This version, while I liked it, convinced me I just prefer regular Spam Musubi, which tends to be juicier. Overall, I would rate Be More Pacific as 3/5. read more

Went here again for a friend's graduation and was anticipating a similar experience from my first time and guess what chat...they definitely cooked (this is good). We had the karaoke room rented out and it was private area sealed off from the rest of the restaurant which was really nice! The equipment inside wasn't horrible and worked fine but the quality of the equipment could be updated maybe in the near future. There was a mic that was held together by some tape but hey, it worked so what more can I say. Let's get to the food, so last time I raved about the crispy pork belly, but this time I wanted to try the marinated pork, the tocino! And oh my goodness gracious, the PORTION of meat they give you should seriously be given an award cause it was glorious. Shimmering, well plated, and filling. We went here for a birthday party for karaoke and dinner. Our extremely large group was shown to a room in the back with one large table with a large tv screen mounted on the wall at one end. Two mics were provided and in the following hours almost constant service was provided. The employees were courteous and the service was great, though sometimes took a while, which was to expected with such a crowd. The cocktails were tasty and the main dish I ordered, the adobo, was delicious. The chicken meat was succulent and the gravy with the rice was rich and aromatic. Why can't you get that right. That just simply neglect. It doesn't take that much effort to make sure your soda is mixing properly. The place was lively, loud, and busy, but not overbearingly so. I ordered lumpia. I'm quite familiar with it, having eaten it many times, here, there, even over there in Manila. These are among the best I've tried. Double-wrapped, and perfectly crispy. The taste of the filling is balanced. Came in on a Sunday around 6:45-ish - there was no wait and it was not busy at all. The music can be/was quite loud, so keep that in mind. Our server was helpful in suggesting what dishes we should try given our dietary preferences and there are clearly-marked vegetarian/vegan/gluten-free options on the menu. We got the Tuna Sisig as an appetizer, the Seafood Sinigang (a tamarind soup with mussels, prawn, salmon, and vegetables) and Daing na Bangus (milkfish with garlic rice and fried egg) as our entrees, and the Halo-Halo for dessert. The portions are good for sharing. All the food came out at the appropriate temperatures and in a timely manner. The tuna in the sisig was tasty, but we both felt that the bell pepper in the dish really stood out - it was tender, crunchy, and carried the sauces well. Our favorite dish was definitely the milkfish, which was cooked well and went excellently with the paired garlic rice. I quite liked the Halo-Halo, especially with the ube ice cream. The evaporated milk with the shaved ice and all of the toppings are so good combined! I do wish there were more bits of the leche flan, particularly as it was a shared portion. This could be a personal preference, but the white beans have a different bite to them than the red beans which were softer. The white beans were a bit harder so it was a bit odd - I am not sure if that is how it is supposed to be though! We really liked the mango and the coconut, especially the flakes on top. Nut allergy friendly: I think some sauces have nuts but we had no issues with any of our dishes. Order-to-Entree: 10 minutes after 9PM. We got here pretty late, around 9:20PM Saturday night. Still a good number of people there and both Karaoke rooms were full of people. With three people, we decided to share these dishes below. Sadly, our rice came out undercooked on all dishes, and we reported this to the kitchen when we got checked on. Scores below are assuming the rice isn't undercooked. Tosilog (5/5): All of us unanimously agreed it was the best dish here. The portions of meat are appropriate. Spamsilog & Longsilog (3.5/5): One sausage and two pieces of spam felt a little light. The spam was seared nicely. The sausage flavor reminds me a lot of Chinese sausage. Tapsilog (3/5): I felt that the amount of ribeye was not enough compared to the rice. There was cartilege in some ribeye pieces that made them hard to eat. The sunny side up egg on all silogs were perfect. Leche Flan (2.5/5 - 3.5/5): Reviews varied in our group. Ultimately, we felt that it was more of a creme brulee than a flan. The top is flame burned like a creme brulee. The flan wasn't that flavorful without the caramel. Unfortunately, they were out of the Halo Halo and Ube ice cream. Overall disappointing considering those are half of the options for the Restaurant Week menu. Overall, I would come back for the Tosilog and try the happy hour, but it was disappointing. 4/5 with -1 for the undercooked rice but +1 for the fantastic tosilog, but I look forward to revising my rating with other dishes here. read more

BMP is a great place to hang out, especially for groups! I've done karaoke here a couple of times and have had a lot of fun. They have two karaoke rooms. I've only been in the larger one. I would estimate that it can accommodate about 10-15 people comfortably. They have an extensive song catalog which you can access via QR code. It's very easy and straightforward to use. The dining area is a moderate size and they have a nice patio out front. The staff has always been very friendly and attentive. They have reverse happy hour on Fridays after 9 pm. Drinks: Some of the cocktails that I've tried are the GQCucumber, the Red Panda, and the Sunset in Sulu. They also have mimosa and beer towers. On one visit, the server brought us a water tower which was so convenient for our large group. Food: The one dish that I've tried a few times and have consistently enjoyed is the Veggie Lumpia. The Brussels were too sweet and had way too much sauce. The Cucumber Salad is okay. It's tart and vinegar forward. It's not a salad, it's more like marinated sliced cucumbers. The Chickcharons aren't bad, but they are very greasy. Some pieces were a little too chewy for my preference. BMP shares a private lot with a few other businesses. There's a decent amount of parking and I've never had trouble getting a spot. There's also some street spots on 5th as well as Yale right in front of the shopping complex. BMP is a cool place with a cool vibe. I'm looking forward to coming back (and maybe trying an actual entrée). read more

Went here with a friend visiting from out of town. Indoor decor has a lot of cultural references to Filipino cuisine. We sat at the bar and enjoyed some dessert. Service was excellent, the bartender was super patient and the food arrived promptly. Definitely try their happy hour, lots of small plates to try. The flan was nice and tasty but the halo halo was a staple that brought back memories, it was well presented and great for a hot day out in Houston heights area. read more
