Some of the best fried chicken we've ever had. The restaurant is super casual, no frills. The service was good.

My husband and his family are obsessed with this place. To be fair, they are from western Illinois no offense and far from the South (I am from Texas). Now, where I am from, fried chicken is sacred. They seem to use a wet batter (like the one long john silvers uses) a common batter used for fish, used for chicken. There is generally nothing wrong with this, but if you do not season your chicken or your batter you are in deep fry (water). When we were there I literally saw them opening up CANS of "chicken gravy" and taking frozen fries from the freezer. The sauce is too sweet for me and has an interesting dulce de leche consistency. So you have bland chicken breast, sugar sauce, and frozen or canned food you have BBY. read more

I've been wanting to try this place for a while, but they are only open in the evening. I was working in Sterling to the west today, and decided to stop in on my way home. First off, if you know your northern Illinois restaurant history, you'll recognize this place as a former Prince Castle, which was a hamburger chain from around 1930 to 1979 or so at this location. They embrace the history here, even with a memorial plaque and an old uniform on the wall. Those days are gone now. BBY Carry Out (which could also be called BBY Cash or Check Only) is all about the chicken...and burgers. In this case, you go to a place which focuses on chicken, so you order chicken. My wife wanted their Dark Meat Special, which included 6 pieces (enough to require two to-go boxes) and a side which she requested macaroni noodles for. I had their 1/2 white meat chicken with cole slaw for salad, and it came with a dinner roll and my choice of baked or mashed potatoes and gravy, so I went for the mashed. Where to start.... LARGE - the 1/2 chicken white meat dinner had 2 LARGE breasts. I mean Wal Mart would blush with embarrassment at what they sell, these are so large. It also came with two chicken wings for 4 pieces or pretty much half the chicken. The mashed potatoes were good, the biscuit was good. My wife enjoyed what she could of the 6 piece dark meat special, and saved some for tomorrow. She liked her macaroni salad - she said it was quite tasty. The chicken had to be driven home 30 minutes on a spring day in the 1970s in paper boxes, inside a paper bag. When I got home, the chicken was still VERY Hot and fresh. Like amazingly hot and fresh considering the time and distance I traveled. While this is BBY Carry out, they do have seating inside, so if you want to eat in, you can. Walk in, order, give them your name, and they'll cook it up fresh. Nothing coming out from the warmer here Chicken wise - it's fryer fresh. Be prepared to wait or be smart, and call in your order ahead like a lot of people did before I got there. Orders are made in the order in which they are received - so phone first. The food was great, the service was okay. I want checked to see if I wanted more to drink or if the food was okay. The building is in desperate need of work. I was at a corner table where I was watching ants coming through the windows and onto the table. While dining there I observed that they do a huge carry out business, it did cause me to wait quite a while for my food. I believe that is what I will do next time to avoid the unexpected visitors at the table. I WILL order it as carry out because the food was that good. read more

FYI-CASH ONLY The chicken strips are massive, making the portions huge. The menu states the dinner comes with choice of potato or salad. I thought that meant pick salad or fries. What that really means is you pick one of their salads (Cole slaw or macaroni) and one of their potato sides (fries, mashed, baked). The R sauce is a tasty thick sweet and tangy dip. The rest of the sides are exactly what you'd expect. The batter on the chicken strips are similar to a beer batter. read more

The restaurant is filthy and rundown. The cook was eating out front, then licked his fingers. The guy taking orders on the phone has no customer service skills. Try answering the phone with "may I help you" That sounds much better to a customer than "yeah". The chicken was just alright. I'll spend my money elsewhere. read more

This is a hometown gem. The fried chicken and is the best you get anywhere around here. Have had shrimp dinner before and was delish. Service is good, gets pretty busy especially on weekends, but worth wait can't go wrong. Mike owner very personable and friendly with everybody. read more

Always a great place. It comes into a close tie with Rip's in Ladd, with bonus points for not being an hour away. Girlfriend and I will usually order a half order of onion rings as an appetizer, a kid's chicken strip dinner to split and an extra order of fries, and that's more than enough to fill us up (I am not a light eater, either). Have contemplated having them cater our wedding many times, it's that good. Probably would make the dance floor a little sluggish, though. If they're not open when you go by, at least stop and get a photo next to the fiberglass chicken as a souvenir. They have the best chicken strips in the universe. Period. Mike the owner will do anything he can to make sure you are happy. I personally hate the special sauce, but he told me once he sells gallons of it a week. He also has fried cheese curds- and the real ones!! OMG i just want to swim around in the basket with them they are so good. I mean come on- who doesn't love cheese?!?! Mike also like to get creative on Fridays- he usually makes some random thing in the kitchen that night and shares free samples with anyone who wanders in. BBY's fried chicken is legendary in Dixon, but I actually prefer their fried pickles. They're cut into slices, not spears, and deep fried in beer batter. I can't quite put my finger on what the sauce tastes like, but it's phenomental. Oh, and the chicken car makes me smile. read more

This is probably my favorite place to visit with family on a Friday after school. My wife , my daughter and myself try to make it to BBY every friday, its THAT GOOD. My daughter loves the all you can eat walleye, I am a HUGE fan of the chicken strips and my wife loves everything they have to offer. The moment you walk in it's like you're transported to a different time , a time that may not even exist outside of places like this. You'll be welcomed with open arms the moment you walk in, be a new customer or a local. The owner and his family are amazingly good people that truly love their home and their town of dixon and you can feel a genuine sense of warmth, comfort , and friendship and I don't think that's something that should be overlooked, people like this are hard to come by. read more

Honestly was so excited to try this place out, ordered over the phone told me 30 minutes, I showed up and they still weren't ready for me which I had no issue with, understanding COVID and all really backs up a kitchen. Well when I went to pay, they told me it was more than I thought it would be. Turns out menu option on YELP is not updated. Owner was there and did not have a mask on, some of his staff did but he did not. He told me "I have nothing to do with Yelp" I told him I do not want to pay that price because it was high and I Gave him some advice that he should update the menu on YELP so he doesn't have this issue again. Inside place looked really run down and kind of glad I didn't have the food here, looks like a place where you can easily get sick did not seem very friendly or sanity. Customers beware. read more

This place was amazing! From start to finish we had an amazing meal. The owner was more than generous and had an awesome sense of humor! We traveled 2 hours to eat here and will be making this trip again! Great chicken and onion rings. The food is hot, greasy, and Delicious. They have a number of things on their menu, but I am not willing to venture away from the chicken and onion rings. They are outstanding. This food is not for the faint of heart -- literally. The cholesterol shield of batter on their chicken and rings is simply amazing. The rings are thin cut, but come with a very generous batter coating. The chicken is a good portion size and always nice and moist -- undoubtedly from the pool of grease that is found at the bottom of the container it comes in. We drive out every summer 2 hour just for the food and for visit with owner Mike and his family. And that is just how they make you feel. The conversation and hospitality are only second to the great chicken and "R" sauce. Even though we're only there once a year Mike still remembers our group and joins the fun and the conversation and treats us as if we were a regular. Laughs are abundant and the sense of humor appreciated. This is year he sent a worker out for a store run since he know we love to wash down our chicken with the just as tasty famous fried Twinkie. Bryce Young was a man without a high school education, but he was extremely hard-working and had a knack for running good local restaurants in and around the Dixon, IL area. He began with a drive-in restaurant (hard to find anymore unless you eat at a Sonic) and then bought a former roadhouse-turned-restaurant just outside the city limits called The White House in the mid-1950's. He and his brothers ran that restaurant for almost 20 years, and the main staple on the menu from his earliest days was his chicken. Bryce's chicken became famous in the area - so famous that when he sold The White House, he had to sign a legal agreement not to sell chicken anywhere in the area for an entire year. When the year was up, Bryce opened Sis's Inn (named after his wife) in the mid-1970's. Armed with his chicken, his soup bar, and a know-how of 'you do it my way', Bryce once again had another success on his hands. He rode that success until his wife Sis became extremely ill and passed away. For a while after that, in the early 90's Bryce operated out behind a liquor store in town with a take-out only chicken business. Since Bryce left, the business has been passed on to his nephew Mike, who opened BBY chicken in Dixon at an old Prince Castle restaurant location in downtown, just off the Rock River The atmosphere is family-diner-ish, and as someone who has eaten Bryce's chicken for over 4 decades, I can tell you that Mike and the Young family have kept it the way Bryce would want it. Is it healthy? Of course not. It just tastes SO good. The chicken is moist and tender, and the pieces are huge, just as they always have been. And, yes, the chicken strips are also huge and good. Kudos to Mike and the family for keeping it going and keeping it real. Get off of I-88 and stop in at Dixon. Forget the Ronald Reagan home - this is the best thing to come out of Dixon. read more
