We moved stuff for storage into a 5x7 space at $77 a month. Four months later Extra Space Storage increased our monthly rent from $77 to $154. My math says they doubled the rent. There was nothing saying our $77 a month for this tiny space was an introductory rate. And this is not what Extra Space says. Instead, they say every rental agreement gives the facility the unilateral right to raise the rent." Apparently that means to them that they can double the rent with impunity. They claim they sent a "notice" of the increase in the mail. No notice arrived. Examined my auto-debit to find the problem. Spoke to the local manager, who said . She also stated that she could lower the rate "because I called" to $127 a month. But only going forward, so the gross overpayment of the past is being kept by Extra Space. IMO this is deceptive business practice and should be illegal. IMO this is just a business fraud. My advice is to avoid them at all cost, unless you are comfortable with a doubling of your space rent.

I noticed THREE months ago they raised my rent by almost 20% despite me never missing a payment or even paying late. Called the office and the employee there said I'd been bumped up, where I was now paying 18% OVER market value, despite having been there almost a year. I've called them three times and stopped by three times and the answer is always the same, "All billing issues have to go through corporate, but I've sent our manager there an email and she'll get back to you tomorrow." 88 days later? NOT ONE SINGLE PERSON has called, emailed, sent a carrier pigeon, nothing. That's nothing to say of the super restrictive hours they keep when you're able to access YOUR own unit. Totally ridiculous, this is nothing but a corporate cash grab spot and as long as your payment clears they'll provide ZERO level of customer service. If you're looking for storage options in SF you're better off anywhere else. Literally, just leave your stuff in the street.
