Was in town visiting friends and they said this is their favorite spot. Went in and most everyone eating there was Indian so you know it will be good. The food was good and wasn't overpriced. The ambiance was good. Seemed like a lot of Indians coming in to eat, which seems like a good sign. On the other hand, I'm docking points for the service, or lack thereof. When we came in there was hardly anybody in the restaurant, but it still took awhile for them to bring menus and take our order. But that was nothing compared to later, trying to get the waiter's attention to get a box for our leftovers, and the check. I handed him my credit card, and we say and waited. And waited. And waited. Saw him waiting on other tables, finally caught his attention and it turns out he forgot all about running my card. Once he went over to actually run the card it only took him like 5 seconds, which made it all the more infuriating that we say there for like a half-hour and he hadn't even run it yet. They brought glasses of water when we sat down, but no ice in it. That didn't bother me too much, but I think Westerners are used to getting ice in their water, and it makes it more refreshing on a hot summer day like today. Very clean, very polite staff. I'm not sure what most Indian dishes are (the menu doesnt really go into specific detail) so I stick to what I know: tikka masala and dal. For an appetizer, we ordered paneer 555. We were expecting deep fried cheese. What we got was a lightly breaded, pan-fried paneer (cheese) coated with buffalo sauce and a sprinkling of cashews. It was completely unexpected, but delicious. Like boneless buffalo wings, but better. I order the chicken tikka masala- tastes like I expected, wonderful texture and taste. It is served with rice. The portion size is huge and we took home half the order. We also ordered the Dal Makhani. It was a thinner consistency, closer to a soup. It is also served with rice. Even though we ordered it with a higher spice level, it was almost bland, or tasted like uncooked spices (like they were an afterthought). We ordered the garlic naan- the garlic was raw and overpowering. I'd stick to the plain naan next time. The drinks listed on the menu vs what was available differed slightly. I'm sure they are still new and trying to figure how much of everything to make based on the amount of traffic they bring in. The mango lassi was great- very creamy. Definitely one of the better Indian food restaurants in the area. You always know it's gonna be a good place, when the Indian people go to the Indian restaurant to eat. Huge variety of food. And the parking lot outside is pretty spacious so lots of room for parking. We came on a Saturday night and it was pretty busy even for an early dinner seating. This restaurant has some of the best Indian food I've ever eaten outside of a home kitchen. They offer many dishes that aren't often on menus at Indian restaurants that cater to folks unaccustomed to Indian food. My suggestion is to research the dishes that aren't familiar to you before you go so you can try something new. And research which breads/sides are usually served with the dish. I did and ended up having Gongura chicken curry. It's a spicy/sour curry made with a base of sorrel leaves and it was DELICIOUS! I want more already and just went last night. ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE FOOD!!! Cannot stress enough how perfectly, completely, utterly delicious the food is here. I was interested by the fact that there were no descriptions or photos on the menu. I took that as a good sign that people who know Indian food eat here. I confess I googled the dish I ultimately ordered to make sure I was ordering what I thought I was. The service was hampered a little by a language barrier. But I'm good with that. We all managed just fine. I recommend this place. Having been to Bawarchi locations throughout the country, I'm quite familiar and happy with their biryani. That being said, I stopped in to order some chicken biryani to-go. Since I knew what I wanted I didn't look at the menu. I also ordered a chili-paneer. The biryani was standard and didn't disappoint. It came with a leg, thigh and breast piece. I was happy to see substantial portions of meat. I was however very disappointed by the chili paneer. The paneer itself was cooked through, but was doused in marinara sauce- obviously not Indian/Pakistani at all. The dish was altogether awful. The biryani gets four stars, and the chili paneer gets two stars at most. I'll be back for the biryani and probably try the chicken 65 next time, so a follow-up review is pending. read more

The food had good flavor, but it was too spicy to eat significant amounts for all three people in my group. It really made me question my spice tolerance, which I normally consider to be on the high side. The lunch specials are a lot of food and a great price. All three in my group ordered from the lunch menu, and two of the orders came out within a few minutes. The third one took comparatively a lot longer (10-15 minutes), which was awkward. I had the chicken curry, which was also the lunch special's side curry for the day, so I didn't get an extra side with my order. Would have been nice to get the vegetarian curry in its place. It also took a long time for us to get an employee's attention to pay. I could be convinced to come back here for lunch, but I don't think the other two in my group would tag along. read more

Bawarchi is my favorite Indian restaurant in St. Louis. I've been going there regularly for almost a year now. The dosas are very authentic and there are plenty of other South Indian options that are hard to find in other Indian restaurants in this area. Believe it or not, Indian cuisine is different in every state of India (and all of it is amazing). So, if you find the food different here compared to another Indian restaurant, that's probably why. Try the biriyanis, kothu parotta, chola bature or any of the dosas, you won't be disappointed. Don't just stick to the meat options, Indian vegetarian dishes have a lot of flavor, unlike most other cuisines. In the age of freezer to microwave cooking it's nice to see a restaurant that makes amazing dishes from scratch with plenty of options for vegetarians. I cannot wait for my next dosa. read more

I ordered goat vindaloo. On the phone, when she was reviewing my order, she said "lamb vindaloo". I said, "No, goat vindaloo". I go to pick it up, and the receipt says "mutton vindaloo". I figured, oh well, I like lamb anyway. I ordered it extra spicy. Got it home and started eating. It tastes like tomato sauce with heat and that's it. It's so tangy I can barely eat it. What's worse, my first real bites of the meat were straight hard cartilage. The rice is bland and not aromatic at all. The garlic naan has no flavor whatsoever. Just bread with some garlic on it. This might be the worst Indian food I've ever had. And to add to all of that, the girl asked me if I wanted to contribute a cash tip. Rather than let me add it to the card. I had eaten dosa here a couple times with my Indian friend and we thought it was delicious that is why I came with my husband. He ordered Chicken 65 with Naan. The Naan was very soft and fresh. The chicken was very good, slightly dry but still nice. I ordered aloo tikki chaat. It was perfect! I also ordered paneer tikka mMasada. The only drawback was that there was no explanation on the menu as to what the items were and it was difficult to order since we didn't know what was in each item. The bawarchi of bawarchi needs some cooking classes. I start by saying "Indian food is not always spicy and hot" , it's a myth that Indian food is spicy and the food here was spicy and no good at all. The food served here can kill you if you can't handle spices , not for light hearted ones :) . We got a lot of Togo yesterday and had to throw off everything as they weren't eatable , no taste just chilli and more chilli. The worst thing a chef can do is add raw chilli powder to food without sautéing the powder which makes it harmful to eat and we could taste that in the chilli paneer, the worst ever chilo I Paneer I ate ever in my life and I come From the city where from the dish originates.The biriyanis were super spicy and no one in the group was able to eat and preferred eating some frozen stuff rather than the Togo. All in all ... the worst Indian food we ever ate in Saint Louis. read more
