With all the Indian food options in the area, I've been meaning to give one a try. So today, I decided to visit Spice Mantra, a relatively new restaurant in the Ballwin area. I ordered the Schezwan Egg Noodles, which were delicious ,and also ensured that I would have enough to save some for later. I also had to grab some naan, which was tasty, and always a great option to accompany an entree from an Indian restaurant. All in all, it was good quality food with great portions, and I will definitely return at some point in the near future. read more

So much flavor and really good-sized portions! We've been here twice now and would definitely recommend it. The Chicken Chettinadu did not disappoint--it was packed with flavor. The garlic chili naan was also quite tasty and had that fresh, homemade taste. They have salt and pepper shakers on the table, but honestly, you would never need them because the food is already so well seasoned and flavorful. One word of caution: if you're a spice wimp, stick with level one! I ordered level two and it was pretty spicy, but still delicious. read more

Omg everything is so good here. I have a picky little eater who loves noodles, so they asked the chef and they were so sweet to make her a shrimp version of their chicken noodle vermicelli dish. She loved it! I was excited to have her try dosa bc she loves naan and she absolutely loved the giant dosa. They had a goat pilaf special we picked up to go and I enjoyed a super filling chicken soup with lots of spices. They have a 10% discount if you pay with cash. We'll be back. read more

Decided to try Indian food for the first time and I'm happy we chose this resturant. We had a large group with us and the staff was very patient and attentive. The resturant is a nice size and they were able to accommodate our party of 10. The noise level was average. Not loud and not too quiet. Exactly how a resturant should be. The food came out within a decent time and everything taste great. Very flavorful! I used a spice level of 2 while my husband did 3. No one at our table went over 3 spice level (it goes up to 5). Our table ordered a variety of entrée with some including egg and goat. No complaints but they have large portions, in my opinion. Everyone enjoyed their food and some had leftovers. Nice resturant and I would return when I'm in the mood for a good Indian cuisine. read more

I couldn't find a menu specific to this location online, so I just dove in and tried a few dishes. Friendly staff was at the front counter ready to hand my food. Overall, the restaurant is bright, modern, and inviting. Here's what I ordered: Spice Mantra Special Chicken Curry (3.75/5): This dish packed flavor and heat. I ordered "medium" and got what I'd call "Indian medium" -- not watered down, exactly how I like it. The sauce was rich and bold, and the chicken was tender. My only gripe: the sauce was a little heavy with oil, and though there was plenty of it, the ratio of sauce to chicken felt off. - Rice (3.25/5): The rice was mild but pleasant. It didn't have much punch -- a little hint of aroma, but I was hoping for something like cardamom, garam masala, or a bit of onion to lift it. I suspect they might be using ponni rice (common in many South Indian dishes) instead of basmati, which fits if the menu leans toward South Indian styles. - Chili Garlic Naan (4/5): This was the highlight. Garlicky, with a good kick, nicely chewy. Great companion to the curry. Overall, I like the location, the concept, and their ambition. Ordered carry out from Spice Mantra in Ballwin the other night. The menu appeared fairly standard for an Indian restaurant. The prices appeared a bit high but not too extreme. We ordered garlic naan, butter naan, Butter Chicken (American Mild), Lamb Korma (American Mild), and Mango Chicken (Medium American). When I went inside to pick up our order, I noticed a pleasant decor and nice atmosphere. It was quiet with not many tables for 6:30 on a Sunday evening. When I got home and unpacked our order we all instantly noticed the small containers, Fancy containers. But small. The the size of the container matched the amount of meat in our dishes. We all agreed the sauce heat didn't match what we ordered, The mild American dishes were too spicy, while the Mango Chicken was too mild. We also felt the sauces were pretty bland. I was hopeful it would be a sweet, spicy, mango'y dish of flavor . . . turned out to be disappointing. The naans were good, This place isn't for us. It's too pricing for what they deliver. What they deliver doesn't stand out in an area with new Indian restaurants opening on a regular basis. It's worth a try to see for yourself. read more

Not your grandma's Indian restaurant! Be very careful with the spice level.... Even mild is pretty hot.... Can't imagine what spicy tastes like. I ordered chicken and shrimp korma in "America mild", my husband order Hyderabadi goat biryani. He ordered it in medium and he said his stomach is on fire. The flavors were so very complex and not anything I ever had before. Menu is huge. If you want a different experience this is it. Highly recommended. read more

I've only ordered from here but once, however I can safely, say that this place was absolutely, delicious. So many flavors in each dish, and such positivity from the staff which makes their service all that much better. I've not dined in but when I went in to pick up the order, it smelled so good and the decor was beautiful. Then there was the pricing which was also, really great. I decided to try a new cuisine recently and was not disappointed. Spice Mantra's ambiance was chill and had really nice decor. There are so many items to choose from, but I opted for the chicken fried rice which was delicious and plentiful (I couldn't finish it). The spices used were fresh and not overpowering. The price was around $12 I think and worth it. I forget our waitress's name, but she was excellent. read more

Butter Chicken was excellent, best Samosas I've had. Nice local spot, that will definitely be in the rotation for our Indian food evenings.

Food was good but one issue which prevents them from being five stars. Ordered spice level 2 but it is more like a 4 at other Indian restaurants. Well, look who rocketed to the top of my favorite Indian places! For a one time visit, the perfection encountered sets the bar very high for everyone else. Party of two, early dinner on a Friday evening. We began with a split bowl of veg sweet corn soup (it's called a "by 2" serving meaning the bowl is split between two smaller servings to share). A split serving was still quite generous . The soup arrived so hot the spoon handle was warm and steaming. Along with a creamed corn flavor accented by green onions and cilantro, there is a hearty crunch provided by celery and carrots. I could have made a meal on it alone; it is exactly the kind of soup you would crave on a cold winter day when you're chilled to the bone. We also had a bread basket, three versions on Naan that included plain, buttered, and green onion. There was more than enough to meet the needs of our meal and half were wrapped to take home. I had paneer butter masala at a heat level of 1 and spouse had chicken curry at level 5. Both were delivered with a side of rice with a unique spice blend-- the best rice I've ever had anywhere. I could go back from the rice alone. My 1 heat was a little spicier than expected but not so much I couldn't handle it. My nose ran a little. Spouse's level 5 was not an "Indian 5" and will be clarified next time we visit. So it's safe to say that it was hot enough for the average American diner. It was by far the best Indian meal we've had in a long time and we both agreed before we were even finished with it that Spice Mantra had become our favorite among Indian restaurants and that we most certainly would return. We ordered Chicken 65 to go for a loved one working late and were happily surprised to receive a container larger than a 15 oz butter tub sealed with a pull-top! What a marvelous way to guarantee food delivery is indeed untainted between the restaurant and door delivery! The staff were attentive and kind-hearted and were on the spot for drink refills, addition of more rice, and delivery of to-go containers. Terrible experience. I called to confirm their $6.99 biryani special but no one picked up. When I went in, they told me they were out of biryani, yet I saw them still serving it to others. Very dishonest. I ordered something else instead and was told it would take 25 minutes -- but I had to wait over an hour. On top of that, no apology at all for the delay. At least show some respect to customers. I am never coming back. read more

First time visit to Spice Mantra today. It is located in the former Mi Lupita restaurant which moved down the road. The decor is very modern, open, bright, and airy. My youngest daughter is my usual foodie companion so we try to order varied dishes to get a full range of tastes. We ordered Punjabi Samosas and Stuffed Mirchi Bajji. The Samosas came with a slightly sweet sauce (maybe pomegranate) and a savory cilantro sauce. Both worked. The Bajji was very spicy and delicious. We also ordered the Special Bread Basket to try the 3 different types of Naan which were fresh, wonderfully chewy, and great for dipping. My daughter ordered the Chicken Vindaloo at a level 1 and she said that it was spicy, but delicious. I ordered the Malai Koftha which I had never eaten before. It was spicy and creamy and went well with the rice and the Naan for dipping. Prices are reasonable and portions are generous. Service was quick and server came back several times to check on us. She also warned us that the Bajji was very spicy. Thankfully the Mango Lassi was a refreshing cooler. Great food and a great experience. We will be back. read more
