Hunt for the best blueberry donut continued…read more Helen's has got a decent fan base so I went in search of the best blueberry donut. I tried them in the past apparently because I have photos associated to that visit (even bought a dozen). I obviously didn't remember until I started writing this review. First the location is pretty easy to reach. Small strip mall store front off Portland Ave. I walked in and there were two people ahead of me but no seating and hardly room to view the selection. There is a plastic COVID screen still up and pictures of people who have stolen from them. The selection of donuts is decent and apparently on the weekends there are speciality fritters. The owner operators are kind and so helpful (high praises!). I ordered one blueberry donut and one banana fritter. Both appeared to be well cooked and scrumptious. However, each of the donuts were over fried and tasted like old grease. The blueberry cake was full of blueberries but no real blueberry taste. The fritter was soaked in grease and no banana flavor. Sadly this is not on my list to try again.

I finally recently got to try this local homemade ice cream place in downtown Puyallup that seems…read moreto be quite popular. The space is a bit awkward when a lot of people come, which I think a few other reviewers noted here. They have the cashier handle only one customer at a time with samples and putting in the order, so the line can move kind of slowly. The menu offers a variety of standard ice cream flavors like vanilla and strawberry along with a few combo and unique flavors like chocolate peanut butter banana and matcha strawberry. They also have a vegan ice cream and sorbets and ice cream cookie sandwiches. The price structure is not really budget friendly...They only offer single scoops and up starting at $5.50 and only have a waffle cone option or in a cup (no cake cone, my favorite T_T ). The peanut butter chocolate banana was a bit too dense and peanut heavy for my preference, so I ended up getting a scoop of the strawberry ice cream. It had a good strong strawberry flavor. With each bite, I could imagine them cooking down strawberries with sugar and then blending that it into the ice cream base. It was very good if a tad too sweet for my preference. Overall, it reminded me of Haagen-Daaz. So, in all, this is good quality, local ice cream and a few other ice cream treats at premium prices, but the spacing and service workflow could use some reimagining.

It's quiet enough but they had a great playlist on when I was in here which I thoroughly enjoyed. The service was great and kind and she brought my order to my table for me since I ordered food which was appreciated. I got a vanilla latte and their breakfast sandwich which comes with bacon, egg, cheese, spinach, and a pesto aioli. The pesto aioli definitely ties the whole sandwich together and was a great pop of flavor. I'm a pesto fan in general so I loved it. The latte was also delicious, no complaints. Overall was a great visit and their WiFi is fast and easy to connect to. Adding this to the usual rotation!

We also got a hot chocolate with whipped cream and a 4oz frozen yogurt cup. It was self serve but unlike other froyo places there were no scales at the end. There is only 4-6 flavors, and we chose chocolate which had a good creamy texture and tasted like chocolate, no sour notes. We loaded it up with toppings and my daughter really enjoyed the experience to choose everything. We will get a larger cup next time I think. The place has good vibes, it feels like a good local spot, with plenty of welcoming touches. Service was prompt and it wasn't much of a wait. We will be back to try more since the location is great for the library or park activities.

So five stars and a review based on my observations as the spouse of a Dairy Bar ice cream loving man! Ha! We all have our Fair favorites. I need a scone and he needs an ice cream cone every time we go. And the Dairy Bar does not disappoint. Go early if you can- after dinner time the line is often about 20 minutes long. For the Spring Fair just the outside walk-up window is open. But for the fall Puyallup Fair the larger restaurant space is open. No tables and chairs but they usually have benches and definitely more service windows open inside. The line moves relatively quickly considering how many people are here. We always have great service and the counter staff is so friendly! Really - this type of customer service is so admirable considering they serve thousands of ice cream treats a day! The menu is nice and simple: Ice cream. Vanilla, chocolate or Strawberry. They can do swirls of two flavors too. My husband loves the vanilla and chocolate swirl cones. I swear as soon as they hand it to him he's immediately transported back to childhood. It's really sweet to see that gleeful sparkle in his eye when they hand over the giant swirl cone. I think this is a common occurrence here- lots and lots of families lined up always for that taste of sweet ice cream from the Dairy Farmers of Washington!

Spouse had a cheese cheddar scone - warm it when you get it home. I tried the vegan layered butter cream espresso cake - didn't care for it, to me it's a bit veganish - it just wasn't that good and not much espresso taste. I will make a better homemade cake to me that was a fail. Even for $12. A slice I won't eat it. I'm sure some of the others must have been better. You order, you stand and wait and still are guilted into at least a 15% tip. They don't have adequate parking and most is paid parking to run on and get a sweet treat . The pride flags - June is over - I think it might be an LGBTQ bakery, I didn't see one man working. It's larger than it appears, not for the customer area. It's clean, and the cashier is friendly enough. I disagree for having to feel I need to tip when I pay to park and walk 50 steps, and have to stand and wait for my order.
