Really great Thai in appleton. So glad someone recommended this place. The food is excellent, the music choices weird and the decor definitely leaves something to be desired. First the water has a slight coconut taste which i thought was nice and fits with Thai. The apps the waiter recommended were very tasty. I had the pad mee lao? It was great and the spice level Was on point. The ambiance could use a little updating. Price seems right and huge portions. There were 8 of us and our food can out one by one. Amazingly flavorful. Watching other dishes pass by, we had a great time ordering from the menu. Sit down, order a smoothie and consider an appetizer. Look around as dishes pass by. Ask your server. They are so helpful, and very accurate about spice level. I am a complete spice wimp, but the red curry was delicious. The Mee Krob was crispy with a hint of sweetness. My wife and I have been in, for both lunch and dinner, many times this past year and Basil's continues to impress. We have had a sampling of just about everything on the menu between the two of us and the only things we stay away from are the noodle dishes, which tend to be thicker and greasier than we prefer. Their soups have been fantastic and, when we do not get a big bowl of Pho or other noodle soup, we always get a cup of their excellent Tom Yum and Tom Gai. They do have some of the standard Asian/Thai appetizers such as crab Rangoon, egg rolls, spring rolls, etc... which are good but they truly shine with some of their more authentic dishes that can be eaten as appetizers such as the crepes and "beef jerky" dishes. A few of our staple include spicy basil beef, which I think is one of their best dishes, and their vegetables in peanut sauce, which may be one of the most addictive dishes I've had. One of my wife's new favorites is the Good, which is fish steamed with spices in a banana leaf. They modulate the spiciness of their dishes well and a 4 will be pleasantly spicy. Service is friendly and prompt, but be prepared for a wait on the weekends. Overall, it's a wonderful restaurant that we will continue to come back to. read more

Wow Basil's is SO good. Our top spot for birthdays and celebrations. The service is always great, and I would drive three hours for their free coconut water. I also go with the vegatables in peanut sauce with tofu, and my mom always gets the pad Thai. I've tried a few other things as well, and have never been disappointed. Basil Cafe is a good choice. I like the hidden gem aspect of this restaurant....the exterior building is somewhat bland, but the inside is well themed and maintained. Reasonable prices on beer is a plus as well. For dinner we had the shrimp spring rolls (which were excellent) and then two entrees (Spicy Basil Chicken & Pad Kee Mao). I felt like the seasoning on the Pad Kee Mao was a bit lacking. We had a solid meal, but I wasn't overly impressed with the food. read more

One of my favorite restaurants in Appleton! Food is absolutely delicious - prices reasonable. The wait staff is attentive, always there to assist. My only complaint: everyone knows about this place, so you might have to wait a bit before getting a table. The Pho was a major disappointment. I was impressed with the layout of the restaurant, but when it came down to the food, I was disappointed. The Pho didn't include some of the traditional ingredients and the accompaniments were left wanting. The basil was limp and not fresh. The broth was ok, but not great. Nice LOOKING place and maybe other things are done better. I also didn't like they give you a little dipping sauce versus having the bottles on the table. An attempt at being fancy, but not very well thought out as being practical. Next I got to try the Pho at Mai's Southeast Asian Deli down the street. Everything I had there has been GREAT, and want to try their Pho. Oh, by the way. If there are Pho affectionados out there.... I'd recomment the Pho restaurant in Green Bay on South Onieda St. It's Pho #1 Noodle House. I took home the broth and it thickened in the fridge which tells me it was made the expensive authentic way with Oxtail bones. It's awesome. read more

Cannot believe this place has almost 5 stars! First off the place is not attractive- the low ceilings give it a dank basement feel. The 'lounge' area when you come in is awkward and feels like a nasty stranger's living room. All that would be ok if the food didnt suck. Papaya salad was not balanced had noodles mainly because i suspect it comes from a big old vat and they cant adjust the spice. Noodle dishes were awful and greasy. The noodles were in shards and pieces instead of a nice long wide noodle probably because they use old ingredients. The room also has horrible acoustics making every moronic conversation next to you even more nice to be next to. Weird that an asian place has all white servers. I really wanted to love it. The food is decent, the service was a little slow. It's not as authentic as I expected, it's slightly Americanized. The restaurant has great ambience, but you do pay for that with slightly higher prices than what's typical for this type of food. The quality is slightly lacking, but wasn't terrible. It was a huge plus that they serve Bun Thit Nuong (they call it vermicelli salad) on the menu (that's why we went), but we had to ask for Sriracha and hoison sauce which are really typical condiments. It's like having to flag down your waitress for mustard when you order a burger. Their fresh spring rolls are fantastic, but cost nearly twice what they should, so it's a trade off. read more

The 4-star is for my husband's dish - Spicy Basil with Catfish. It's really spicy but quite flavorful. I had the pho noodle soup with seafood. I would only give it a 3-star. The soup was a bit too salty for me and the noodle was a tidbit over-cooked. My son had a stir-fried flat noodle dish and he really enjoyed it. By the way, try their Tom Yum soup. It was great. Although it doesn't have lots of coconut milk in it, but it certainly has lots of flavor. I will definitely pick that one in a larger bowl next time when I go. It's a great place for family and large group gatherings. The place is clean and open. The service is quick, although some of the wait staff seemed to be inexperienced. Best restaurant in Fox Valley. One comment by Kodak is off base. The sides of vegetables should never be inside the soup. They would get soggy. You add them as you eat to keep the crispness. The pho here is fantastic. I have eaten at this restaurant over 20 times. Always consistently fresh and every dish on the menu is a signature dish. read more

Beautiful set up but their food is pretty bland. I'm Asian and I love my food with more flavor and taste. Servers are pretty dull. And I find it baffling that they only give us a little plate the size of my palm of condiments, most places just give you the bottles. I ordered the Thai iced tea and it tastes watered down compared to other places I've been. I also got the pad see ew with tofu and I had to add extra sauce to make it taste "ok." I ordered the sweet rice with mango and it was pretty good. I probably won't eat here again though since their food is pretty high priced and almost tasteless. read more
