Jerry conducted our wine tasting and he was absolutely phenomenal- so knowledgeable about winemaking and his passion was contagious. He took his time, offered snack pairings and detailed the meals he cooks alongside each wine as well. As with most wineries you can bring your own food but there is sometimes a working brick oven for pizza. If the oven is on definitely get the pizza I dont care if you bought food with you. I visited Basignani this past Saturday (4/20) as part of a bachelorette wine tour. I'm not a wine drinker and thus had a non-drinking pass, which was fine. I was able to locate self-serve water fairly easily and stuck to that. I tried to stick it out with the group while they had their wine tasting but ended up having to leave for fresh air. The building where the tastings were held smelled awful to me. Stale and old. What I figure black mold smells like, it was intolerable. Outside was fresh air, but awful views. Basignani Winery is not a pretty place. Even the rows of vines are fairly depressing looking. I was definitely ready to leave. The group of ladies I was with reported they not only hated all the wines they tried but also the Basignani person who was providing the tastings. So, not a good look here all around. read more

I am so impressed with this place. When you first drive up, you almost feel like you're at the wrong place because it's like your are in someone's yard, but there's so much at the top of the hill. Wow! So we pulled up and figured out to walk straight back into the little house. Inside, there were a couple of employees and some people doing tastings. On the walls are a bunch of old wine bottles which was pretty cool. And the bathroom was nice! Moving on, we were helped by a woman who gave us a tasting card that was organized by red dry, white dry, and sweets. We were supposed to check off 6 for the tasting, so we did. We did a tasting with a very nice man, I think his name was Jerry. He was hilarious and so knowledgeable. He gave us ALL the wines... so instead of 6 we had 12 he walked us through information about each one. It was awesome. Then we ordered a bottle and took it out to eat with our food we brought on the patio and ordered some of the pizza they make on site. That was good too! There are two outdoor covered areas you can sit in to eat and drink right by the vineyard. At the end, we signed up for the wine club, of course. You get 4 bottles a quarter and the price was totally reasonable. I'm so excited to go back here and tell all my friends!! read more

This was my first time here and definitely not my last time. We came here for a day date to get a break from our toddler and it was very relaxing. We were greeted upon arrival, I told them this was our first time there, the ladies gave us some wine samples, and assisted us with ordering pizza. She also mentioned live music will start up on Friday nights, they were both friendly and helpful. I enjoyed the live music and the ambiance. This is a venue for couples, friends, and families. We brought our chairs and blankets, relaxed out on the lawn in the shade. Everyone was spaced out nicely. I do want to warn you, there were all kinds and of insects out there. Time for a re-review! I will admit my first visit here was a little spotty. However, I just recently returned last Friday for their Friday night happy hour series that features their wine (of course), live music, and pizza! Staff was super friendly and helped us choose wines according to our taste. We ended up getting bottles of Rose, Sangria, and Cabernet. All pretty good! The brick oven pizza is delicious and the perfect compliment to the wine. From a COVID standpoint, they are great for social distancing! They have an open air tent with heaters you can sit under or you can choose to sit out on the lawn. The Elena Rosé is amazing! I haven't had a Rosé this good since I lived in Southern California. A girlfriend of mine and I came here in October and the weather was perfect. Where to start? The location is beautiful, spacious, and easy to find. The drive to Basignani, at least for me, is beautiful! They have decent food offerings although nothing gluten free it seems which is sad for me. You have PLENTY of space. PLENTY. This is one of the safest places I went to during COVID. I was very selective about where I went and I am so glad they made the cut. I had been wanting to come here for about a year. This is a must visit winery here in Maryland. My friends and I hosted an intimate event here last month. We arrived right when they opened and welcomed with open arms. Everyone was so accommodating. We set up in the heated tent area outside the tasting room. We were able to bring our own charcuterie boards. We waited until our full party arrived to start the tasting but the staff checked on us periodically and made sure we had everything we needed. Once our full party arrived we had our tasting with a friendly, funny, and knowledgeable guy. We asked a ton of questions and he was able to answer them all. We tasted everything! He listened to us, more than likely, terribly describe what kinds of wines we liked and he gave notes and suggestions based on our likes and dislikes. We bought a ton of wine and sat for hours laughing and chatting. Some ordered the brick oven pizza, that I didn't try but it looked delicious. Everyone really enjoyed themselves. Best hidden gem in Sparks, MD. We actually got married here a few years ago and it was the best space for an intimate event, around 50 people. This winery is pretty close to home and it was my first time here, my 2nd weekend in a row wandering the wineries. Great atmosphere, live music and the part in my opinion is the hot & fresh brick oven pizza made to order. You can reserve a table underneath the tented area or you can free lance it, bring your own lawn chairs and pick your own spot on the open lawn. It is kid & dog friendly. Outside snacks were allowed in. They have about 11-12 different wine choices, your typical reds, whites, sweet & dry. I'm a sweet wine drinker so I purchased their Vidal which is their sweetest white wine. It paired very well with the pizza might I add. I learned about this winery from a Yelp event actually, they were providing wine pairings with caramels so they only brought red wines and while I am not a fan of red wines all the time the flavors intrigued me so much that I had to go to the winery to check out everything else they offered. I should also mention that I was quite impressed by the two women who were at the event providing the pourings - turns out one of the women was the owner - that doesn't happen often but that goes to show you the type of dedication the family has to the success of the business plus I love family owned businesses and I love strong females even more! I chose to visit the winery on a very wet, Saturday afternoon and though the weather was not ideal the company and the outdoor accommodations made the afternoon quite a success. I loved that they offer cheese pairings with the wines and I also like that 3 of the wines are pre-chosen and then you get to pick 3 additional wines - what a great deal! After tasting the wines, we decided to sit outside under the tent (dry from the rain storm) and enjoyed a bottle of, believe it or not, rose wine! My friends and I decided we'd had enough of the pandemic shut-in experience so we planned a downtown pizza and beer outing on a lovely afternoon. Then I remembered a Living Social discount I had for Basignani Winery so I was checking out their hours only to discover it was pizza day! It was a bit overwhelming to arrive and see so many people that had the same idea we did, but they had plenty of outdoor areas to spread out with blankets and chairs. We shared two bottles of really good wine and two very good brick oven mushroom pizzas. The weather was lovely and the vineyard is really pretty. It's a bit of a drive out into the county, but they have plenty of parking and the family that runs the winery is super nice and accommodating. Ive been here two times and I enjoyed myself both times. The first time was probably in 2018 for a wine tasting with a group of my girlfriends. We really enjoyed our experience and the person who did our tasting was really personable. I think he may have been one of the owners. I visited again a few months ago on a Friday for pizza, wine, and music. This was a great safe way to hang out considering COVID. My girlfriend and I brought chairs and setup beneath some trees. I thought the pizza was tasty and the music was enjoyable. There was a good crowd but not overcrowded. Overall, I really like several of the wines that I've tasted at this winery. Came here as a girls trip and thoroughly enjoyed it. It was a very cold day but Basignani had a very nice outdoor tent setup with quality operable heaters. For the tastings, we had a very knowledgeable gentleman to guide us through the samples. He gave the story on the grapes in each wine, where they come from, how they are processed, and the proper etiquettes for swirling and checking the legs. This was my first time at the winery but I've had their wines at many festivals. I typically do the Vidal and Monkton Moon but this time I fell in love with the Riesling. Very good stuff. Took my mother here for Mother's Day weekend to do a tasting and it was a GREAT experience. The tasting room is nicely decorated and has a cozy feel to it. We were served as soon as we walked through the door. We tried 6 of the wines listed on the menu and picked out our fave. We took two bottles home with us. Absolutely love this winery! It's definitely smaller and more rugged than some other wineries but I love it. It's a small winery not a huge restaurant. It's a family owned winery and it feels like it in the best ways. The tasting room is behind the main building but it is an absolutely gorgeous wood room and the outside is covered in some sort of climbing plant which gives it a very whimsical vibe. I do wish they would update their tent and maybe extend the permanent covered area but it's still nice and there are some tables near the grapevines for you to sit. I recommend bringing a picnic blanket or your own chairs if you have a group bigger than 2. The pizza is delicious and definitely worth it. Every time I have gone in for a tasting the employees are all so incredibly kind and welcoming and they give great recommendations based on what you like. I can not recommend them enough! read more

My husband and I were in the area and decided to make a spontaneous stop and try their wine tasting. We opted for the 6 wine tastes at $16.00 each. I think my favorite wine by far was the Rosé, it was mild and sweet and overall a nice wine to have nightly with dinner. Since we hadn't made reservations, they were able to squeeze us in, but since it was a nice summer day out, it was packed! They do offer a wine and cheese sampling which we weren't able to partake in because that's only offered for those with reservations, so I was pretty bummed about that. Everyone has a different palate. I can't say this is the greatest wine ever because that would simply be one man's opinion. I have been drinking wine from Basignani for years and I really enjoy it. The Marisa is a very good Red if you enjoy BOLD red wines. Now if you like very good blended wines try the Lorenzino Reserve that is IF they have any. It usually sells out pretty quickly and is in high demand. It's a beautiful menagerie of Cab Sauv, Cab Franc and Merlot. The other great part of the winery is the atmosphere, if you enjoy a friendly tasting room and some good grub when they have events come here and enjoy, I know I do!!! read more

2.5 stars I really wanted to give Basignani a higher rating; however, the lack in knowledge of both the winery and wine really impacted our experience. We pre-purchased a groupon ($15): tasting for 2, paired with cheese and 2 souvenir glasses. Although the groupon says reservations required, we called in advance and were told to just come in. Experience: Driving into the winery, I was greeted by a small dirt road which led up to a few small stone cottages and the vineyard. It was like I was transported to a little, quaint winery in France. The tasting experience was led by a young lady who was on the first day of the job. She was friendly and approachable but had minimal training and knowledge of the vineyard and wines. We were able to sample all 10 wines currently in production, and were even asked if we wanted to repeat tastes of any wine at the end. Awesome! Unfortunately, we were not told any information about the wines (beyond dry or sweet), the lady leading our tasting also wasn't familiar with the printed out sheet with descriptions of the wines. Basic questions like grape varietals, aging process, style of the winery, terroir, type of oak/barrels, harvest, etc... were met with blank stares. Although she asked more senior staff working in the tasting room, we couldn't get an answer and was even asked: "Why do you want to know?". A bit disappointing because when I travel to a winery to taste, I'm going for the experience to hear about the vineyard, wines, terroir, and story behind the winery. Otherwise, I can drink wine in the comfort of my home! Wines (as with any wine this can vary person to person): Basignani's style seems to be focused on creating approachable wines for easy drinking. Out of the 10 wines we tried, we had 3 dry whites, 2 dry reds, and 5 sweet wines. It seemed like Basignani's signature wines were their sweet wines. -3 Dry White Wines: Elena, Seyval, and Chardonnay. These were fruit forward in general and had lots of oak. -2 Dry Red Wines: 1) 2009 The Cabernet Sauvignon was reminiscent of Napa-style cabs; stone fruits and ash. 2) 2008 The Reserve Lorenzino was "Bordeaux-style" (less fruit forward) with a tart mid-palate; it felt a bit off balance if you ask me. -5 Sweet Wines: 1) Marisa Dolce was a semi-sweet red. Meh, I've had better. 2) Monkton Moon Delight was very sweet. Pale pink. Mouth full of ripe peach. Sweetness overwhelmed a lot of other characteristics 3) Vidal was off dry with nice minerality, well balanced. Pretty good. 4) 2013 Riesling had notes of honey. Not as crisp or light bodied as most rieslings. 5) 2010 Sinistra was a "Port" style wine. Lacked notes of raisin or dried fruits common to Port, but was very palatable. The tannic structure was prominent, but didn't clash with the sweetness which was impressive. My favorite sweet wine out of the 5 we tried. Overall: Basignani Winery had a great setting. We ended up purchasing a few bottles. I WISH they knew more about their wine, terroir, and vineyard. How they currently run their tasting experience, I wouldn't be back. Their wines were okay, but I got the impression that the sweetness of the wines and in-your-face oakiness of the dry whites were used to hide flaws. Certain wines definitely stood out above the rest. In the end, I might purchase a bottle of Basignani if I see it in the store at a good price, but I won't be back for their tasting experience. read more
