Feedback: not appreciating the rudeness of the two employees that were at the counter. I was the only person in the shop (other than my baby), and after purchasing lunch requested that the **loud** radio could be turned down a little so that my baby wouldn't start crying during our meal. The man nodded, walked away, and did nothing about it. I came back to the counter and asked again, and both employees pretended they couldn't hear me. I then asked the lady once more (politely explaining that I wanted to be able to stay there with my baby), and she started at me, then said, "later", and turned her back to me and did nothing. Not loving that I gave this place my money and that they clearly did not care about anyone other than themselves. I won't be back. read more

Barton's Bagels is my all time favorite bagel place in the world! I now live in NYC and I still have yet to find a better bagel. While their bagel sandwiches can be lacking, the bagels themselves are amazing and that's what they do best. Make sure to pick up some chive cream cheese too. See some people hating on this place and I'm just boggled. Here's why: 1) I doubt they've ever lived in NYC and no the "visit one time where you had that one bagel and that like, super famous spot that your friend took you to but you can't remember the name"...no that doesn't count. (I lived there for the past 4 years and let's just say I dabbled quite a bit in bagel-ry). Maybe I'm not a native, but I sure as hell am more qualified than a Californian to drop knowledge 2) I'm from the Bay, so I am Californian and I can say with confidence, bagels here suck. And no, Noah's Bagels is not a good f-ing bagel. 3) They boil these bagels, which the best places in NYC do. It leaves bagels with a thin crispy layer on the outside and soft and chewy on the inside. 4) They have a massive variety of bagels, and guess what so do all the best bagel spots in NYC. Choice people. And in the morning, lots of just out of the kettle, warm options. Even if they've been sitting there for a bit, they're still soft and chewy. 5) Service...I agree on the slower side, in NYC they crank through customers, but what the F do you expect, white glove? It's a bagel joint! The people that work here smile, take your order and move on. I have zero issues with that. My only knock would be I'd want more variety of schmears but they're pretty solid. Also, it's called an "Everything Bagel" not "All seed" but I'm just being picky at this point. The prices are a bargain for what most breakfast costs in Marin, and the day old bagels by the dozen or half dozen are a steal. This bakery is very underrated. I've been coming here since I was a kid, and they never let me down. They bake fresh bagels every morning (so many varieties!) and sell day old bagels at $5 a dozen--a total steal! My favorite of their confections has to be the breakfast bagel sandwich with egg, cheese, and ham. For lunch I'd recommend the tuna salad sandwich which is the best ever. Well, I will lead that since we are in Northern Cal, and don't have that unique NYC water with all its minerals (the essential ingredient for NY Pizza and Bagels), I won't make the NY Bagel comparison. With that out of the way, I will say that Barton's makes a decent bagel; they are local, independent, fresh and I want to support them for those reasons (in addition to making a great bagel compared to local competitors). The other good thing about their bagels is that they last a while. When I buy a Safeway bagel, I am lucky if it lasts until the next day. Barton's bagels will last me at least 5 days. read more

I've been going to Barton's for probably 9 years and I still haven't found a tastier bagel. The fresh bagels are always warm and chewy and the day old bagels in a bag are almost as good. Plus they have just about every schmear you could ask for, in individual sizes or tubs. Simply the best bagels. I always have toasted salt with light cream cheese and tomato. I'll sometimes treat myself to a chocolate bagel. No one's chocolate bagels come close. I've tried them everywhere. And the cranberry bagels are great completely plain. My oldest daughter when feeling slim and decadent gets the sticky cinnamon & sugar with cream cheese, heated up. Pure sugar & fat, pure joy! I find Barton's bagels reasonably priced. For years he was right next door to my office, which we loved, but several years ago he moved to the other end of town. Ohhhhhh Yeaaaaahhh! You know, there's nothing on this planet worse than a poorly made and ultimately un-loved bagel. Not a problem here, not one bit. Each Barton Bagel I have ever tried is prepared with love, cut perfectly ,and toasted to perfection. Then served to me with just a small smattering of creme cheese and a smile. The coffee is a local brew and always hot . At the end of the day I spend less here than I do when I am forced to go for one of those "chain bagles" made from corporate clay and shipped via truck from some factory in the middle of no where...then slapped together with the hands of a minimum wage kid who has his I-Pod going and could care less about the finished product. I love bagels. And Barton's have good bagels. Unfortunately, I repeatedly have had the worst service you could imagine simply for asking for things like "toast it twice," or "open face," or "can you spread the cream cheese on both sides," or "can you cut it in half?" I have kids, they are a little picky. I always ask really nicely. Last time, they ignored every request and when we told them they insisted it was my fault. This has become my favorite lunch and breakfast place over the past few years. The staff is very accommodating and efficient in their execution. I haven't witnessed any poor customer service since that one day a few years ago, so I can chalk that up to an element of customer service loved by us all: you can't please everyone. I learned about Barton's when a friend of mine brought a plateful of their bagels to a brunch gathering. They smelled better than any bagels I'd ever encountered on the West Coast, and they were so fresh and delicious I stuffed them in my face completely plain and untoasted, which I have never done before or since with any other brand of bagel. I demanded (politely) to know where they were from and was directed to this unprepossessing little shop in San Anselmo, where I have been buying them by the inexpensive and scrumptious dozen ever since. The shop is not fancy, the prepared options very simple (the fact that you can't order avocado on your bagel here in Marin where literally everything is available with avocado should tell you all you need to know), and the lines are often long, so don't come expecting a swank experience. Just get your bags of fragrant, chewy, luscious bagels and go. You won't be sorry. (They freeze well, too!) read more

I went here a couple months ago while visiting from SoCal, I don't go to bagel places often but I plan on doing so much more after coming here. I got the blueberry bagel with cream cheese and a coffee, perfect for the rainy morning. Bagel was toasted just right and perfect amount of cream cheese. The bagel was so good that I decided to get a second order of the same thing. Coffee was pretty good from what I remember, had to wait a while for them to refill the self-serve coffee. Comically bad experience. The person working had no business being in a customer service position. He was extremely confused by the idea of an open face bagel which took several minutes for him to understand that I didn't want my bagel sandwiched together and I would like cream cheese, capers and lox on both sides. After we sorted that out he very slowly made my boyfriend's bagel so by the time I got mine it was cold. Regardless, I felt as though we had thrown the poor kid for a loop so he got a $5 tip.... on probably a $16 order. The really bad part: they took my $2 and refused to give me the coffee I paid for. I ordered a coffee, when I went to fill my cup the carafe was empty. I let this cashier know but told him there was no big rush since I saw that he was helping another customer. After waiting until the other customer was long gone I went up and asked about the coffee again. At this time he told me that they don't make fresh coffee after 11am and that he had filled the carafe with hot water without mentioning to me that I would not be getting my coffee. I was pretty shocked and pointed out that I had paid for a cup of coffee and would like to receive it. He again responded that they did not make it after 11am and began to go on doing whatever else it was he was doing. I repeated that I had paid for a cup of coffee with a very confused look on my face to which he responded that he supposed he could refund me the purchase price I said okay and sat down expecting that he would return the ~$2 to my table; he did not. He could have offered to make me an americano, I would have even paid the difference without much gripe but he did not and he did not refund the coffee. Neither myself, nor my boyfriend will be returning simply based on awful customer service; hopefully the business owners are okay with losing business over a $2 cup of coffee. I worked as a coffee shop manager for many years and can definitively say that it would have cost them less than $2 to simply brew the coffee that the essentially stole my money for. As a side funny note; while I sat and ate my bagel another customer walked in and questioned the person working about their practice of handling the bagels bare handed and if they had gloves or it he handled money. He did in fact handle money and I can not say for sure if I remember him ever washing his hands while we were there. read more

I really appreciated their sesame whole wheat and honey whole wheat bagel. The honey wheat was good with savory and sweet toppings which is not always true for honey whole wheat bagels. My husband thought the salt bagels could have had more salt. Overall they were pretty decent and we will going back for more, good prices too. Update: I'm upping Barton's to 5 stars--been there a couple more times and have decided they're even more awesome than I thought. I really appreciate how they bake ingredients throughout the bagel instead of just sprinkling it on the bagel. Like the asiago and jalapeno. And all their toppings have been ample and very fresh.
