Last week I had one of the best experiences with a medical provider in my life. it was my first appt with Barry Kami, DDS. He was not only thorough in his examination and presentation of findings but additionally and simply he was a very nice person. He immediately relaxed the situation by asking that I refer to him by his first name. He was not only took a history but was interested in who I was. He examined not only my teeth but the soft tissues in my mouth, head and neck. His examination equipment is state of the art. His office was clean and modern. The staff from the folks at the front desk to the dental assistant were very friendly. They observed strict Covid safety procedures. The finale was that Dr. Kami looked me in the eye and told me that I could contact him in the future 24/7 with concerns. This could have been the primer for interpersonal relations, thorough examination and communication for every health care provider in the nation. I speak as a health care provider myself for near 50 years. It was a great lesson for me. I left glowing. BRAVO read more

Dr. Kami's office was the first five star Yelp institution I ever visited, four years ago. He and his staff did not disappoint! Best dentist office I've ever been to. I first visited for a second opinion for some unexpected tooth sensitivity. I was really impressed by Dr. Kami's honesty, his energy, and by how much he cares. I remember getting a call from him later that evening to ask how I was doing, and after several visits we were able to sort out my tooth pain. The staff are all very professional and it seems like everyone enjoys working with Dr. Kami. My teeth feel awesome after every cleaning, and it really seems like they try to think of everything for their patients comfort and convenience (dental goodies to take home, phone chargers etc.). read more

A great office, really nice staff that work with your schedule and make you feel welcomed and empathized with, and Dr. Kami is totally reasonable when it comes to your options. I figured I was walking into the office to have him tell me we needed to get my wisdom tooth out STAT, but he started with much tamer options first, and we'll see how that goes. He also didn't even charge me for the visit, which included an exam, an x-ray and a full dose of antibiotics, because my dumb insurance company had me on pediatric instead of regular dental coverage, which I found out while in their waiting room. Here are pros and cons, about this Dental Office: Pros: 1. The office is very nice looking and very clean. 2. The staff is nice as well, including Dr. Kami. Cons: 1. Scheduling an appointment is like 3 months out!!! Everyone's schedule changes like almost every week. So if your schedule changes, you would need to add additional months for your appointment, which then would be like 3 to 6 months out. There really is no flexibility, you may get a call for last minute opening, but your schedule may already be booked? So nothing you can do about it or drop everything and take the appointment. 2. They have one dentist! So the scheduling issues make sense, but not practical in this high speed world we live in now. 3. You see the Dr. Kami for about approximately 4-5 minutes, then you only deal with the other dental staff. 4. The Prices are slightly (20-30%) higher than other Dental Offices, sometimes it is worth it, to get a second opinion. 5. The wait times to see a dental staff member will range 15-30 minutes, even if you are on time, unless you have the very first appointment. During the afternoon times, there will be delays. 6. You may also be referred out to another dentist, because they may not be able to perform some procedures. So conclusion, Dr. Kami and staff are very nice people, the office atmosphere is very nice, but the business itself could use an efficiency revamping and maybe another Dentist. I would use them if I sat at home with nothing to do for 3-6 months, but I have a busy life, and my schedule requires some flexibility, which this office can not offer. So try them for yourselves, I am sure most of you will probably come to same conclusion, either accept their scheduling or find another equal good dental office. Good Day. read more

This is the most amazing dental experience I have had. There are some reviewers that mention long waiting times which is true but if you were to go to the best stylist or a great restaurant, you will have to wait for awhile to get them. So, it's not a surprise that you do the same here. Very accommodating staff, minimal wait times. And wonderful service. Dr Kami doesn't drill forever - in and out. Little to no discomfort. I would give Dr Kami 10 stars for how great a dentist he is. Problem with going there is front office issues though. They can be a pain to deal with. They are very nice but not on top of it at all. That was the only downside but since they do the appointments and billing its still important. But Dr. Kami is the best dentist I ever seen. He takes his time and knows what he's talking about. My last dentist was a crazy quack who said I had gum disease and needed thousands of dollars of treatment. I swear they were just trying to max on my dental benefits. But Dr. Kami said my gums were fine and never requires extra treatments or scare tactics. His office is extremely clean which is important to a germophobe like me and my regular cleanings from the hygeinists always go well. I am beyond the moon with the standard of excellence that starts from the moment you walk in!You are greeted with people who seem to love their career! You feel so cared for! The rooms and facility are clean, inviting, and comfortable! The service, hospitality, above and beyond approach by Dr. Kami and his staff is nothing like I have ever experienced! You even get chap stick, what the heck? I have had whitening and some work done and every visit, I'm left in awe with how smooth they run has a team! I just called and asked for a teeth cleaning for my son who is off to college... ( his regular dentist is booked up) and I was asked to do an exam and x-rays... It is the second time I am being asked to spend way more money than necessary... I don't trust dentists and even less dr Kami.. This is my first visit of Dr. Kami's office. People look very friendly. My appointment is at 3pm. I was late for 12min because I got lost. You know 1st visit problem. They let me wait more than 1 hr till 4:20pm . I just want to let people know what you should expect if you are late. Half hour wait due to my own fault is acceptable, but I find after half hour my anger is building up. I am sharing a fact and my feeling. This may not be relevant to everyone. read more

I have less to say about the quality of care, which is ok, than about the pricing policy. Dr. Kami's office turns out to be the most expensive dental office in Berkeley and I found out about that the hard way. I had a colleague recommend me this office and I had to have a root canal work done. As I wasn't from the US, I was shocked to see the price tag (I could fly to Europe, get it done and then return for the same money, but didn't have time to travel), so I just went ahead and paid close to ~1900 dollars for the whole shebang. A year later I needed the exact same treatment for the corresponding tooth on the other side and when I saw the price tag I started calling around other dental offices in Berkeley in disbelief as the price had gone up a few hundred dollars. Turns out that other top rated dental offices are substantially cheaper - I saved ~600 dollars by changing doctors. In the process I discovered that the root canal specialist that Dr. Kami refers people to (Priya O'Callagan) is also extremely expensive, that turned out to be completely unjustified as there are better equipped root canal specialists in Berkeley, that are MUCH more affordable. Having said that, Dr. Kami is very friendly as well as the staff. However unlike other dentist offices, you will mostly be dealing with dental hygienists, than the doctor himself, which I found a bit weird. read more

Just an update: Dr. Kami and company are back at the newly renovated building on University. And it is splendid -- the individual patient areas are spaced around a central solarium-like space with a skylight. Free parking in back, but you have to really know where you're looking to find the entry to the lot before you drive by it......fortunately you can just go around the block and try again. The waiting area is nice and they have a great selection of magazines -- THIS WEEK'S Time, Newsweek, and the New Yorker, instead of a six-month-old copy of Women's Day with the recipe pages ripped out, as at my doctor's office. My previous dentist was a good technician but he kept pressuring me to let him replace all my old crowns because they were "ugly" and "from the Seventies" -- apparently they were the dental equivalent of avocado appliances, but they worked fine, and since few people are really looking in the back of my mouth, we parted company. Dr. Kami has been very willing to do work as needed and when I can afford it -- on my schedule not his. read more

I wish I could give them more than 5 stars! A while back I had an accident and broke a few teeth. Dr. Kami fixed my broken teeth and made them look even better than before. Dr. Kami is awesome...and his staff is amazing too! They treat you like family...even if you're the weird cousin that only shows up at Thanksgiving...I usually hate going to the dentist (who doesn't?) but Dr. Kami and his awesome staff truly makes it a pleasant experience every time. read more

Going to Dr. Kami is about as good as going to the dentist can get. His office is really clean and efficient. Everyone seems really happy to be working there. The good doctor himself should have a reality show - he is so friendly at first it's a little startling. Cynical as I am, I first thought he was trying to sell me something, but he was just friendly. He could easily be a politician and get votes just through his demeanor. You just feel comfortable with him. I had 3 crowns done in his office. He has a new computer-aided anesthesia injection machine that has a very high gauge wire he inserts into the gum directly around the tooth he's going to work on. This numbs only the tooth area, not the whole side of the face, as I've traditionally experienced. He then works on the tooth, and the anesthesia wears off in less than an hour and it's back to normal. Now, in my case the assistants did most of the work: creating the mold, grinding it down to make sure the bite is perfect, etc. Dr Kami just did the final part of gluing the crown in. But you've got to give him huge credit for running such an efficient and pleasant operation. read more

Barry has been my dentist since he began his practice with his father. I was one of his father's patients. Perhaps one of his father's beginning patients. I have been going to that office since 1958 when his dad was in practice alone with Barry's mom as the office manager. Frank, Barry's dad loved to do gold work and he did all of his own and I may still have a crown done by Barry's dad. By the way I still have all of my own teeth and have never gone to the dentist and had any pain caused by the Dr. Kamis. Barry is the BEST!!!!! 8 years later, I've moved, tried other dentists, and still go back to Dr. Kami. His office staff is consistently great, hygienists are consistent, you can tell the management is good because everyone feels responsible for their work and works autonomously--they have the power to do their jobs correctly. Dr. Kami is my sons favorite dentist! I remember as a kid going to the dentist was the worst ever, heck it's the worst even now as I am an adult. So I was really dumb and chipped my front tooth while working out late at night with my friends in my apartment. So I called all the dentists in the Berkeley area and left messages (since it was late) explaining my situation and need for a fix up. The very next morning (at like 7am) they called and said I could come right in! They were the only dentist to respond and the service was awesome. Got there around 7:30, got out by 8 with a perfect smile ;) Later on, he even called just to see how my teeth were doing and let me know I could come back if there were any complications. He is a nice guy to talk to, but I wouldn't trust his treatment proposals. I let double check his proposed extensive "treatment" plan at UCSF dental center and roughly 50% of his plan was actually not at all indicated for treatment, further 30% of his plan was also not indicated for treatment, but should be monitored over time and finally 20% of his plan was indicated. So, either he is going for the $$$ or just incompetent. read more

My teeth got cleaned very nicely today. There wasn't too much pain and a whole lotta gain as my teeth are now sparkly clean. I came away with two toothbrushes, one floss, and a 15 SPF chapstick. I have had nothing but wonderful experiences with Dr. Kami and his staff! I first found his practice when we had just moved to the area and my husband needed to see someone urgently. Even though he was a brand new patient, Dr. Kami took him right away, referred him to the specialists he needed to see, and called him the day of his surgery with the other doctor. We were both touched by his thoroughness and thoughtfulness! Since then, I have brought both of my children here (both under 5), and they both felt very happy about their visit (which made me feel very good about as a mom). And finally, I had my own first appointment today and am very happy to be a patient here! So much so that I wanted to write a quick yelp review to tell others! What a well run practice! I was new to the area last year and searching for a dentist for just a regular cleaning and Dr. Kami kept popping up as one of the best dentists in the east bay. Conveniently he was just a 5 minute drive away from me. Unfortunately, he was out of network for my insurance (only 70% coverage) but decided to try him out anyway because of the great reviews and I wasn't disappointed! The office itself is beautiful, clean, stocked FULL of every kind of magazine, coffee table books etc. Wait time is always less than five minutes. The equipment is state of the art, super fancy, etc. (including those walk in x-ray machines that take a 360 view of your teeth). PLUS there's a parking lot which, around here, is an amazing perk. I'm always late to appointments and not having to factor in another 10 minutes trying to park on the street in a super bum-y area is awesome. Dr. Kami himself is very sweet and remembers little details you told him (he must write them down somewhere and then review his notes just prior to seeing you again, which is fine with me...a cool way to make your patient feel special). I also like that they put chapstick your lips before they work on you, and then give it to you to take home! Each new patient has to have an exam performed first including x-rays, etc. before the patient can get a cleaning, which is kind of annoying because it's another bigger expense while the cleaning itself is very affordable. I went ahead and did it and then scheduled a cleaning, which went well - the hygienist spent a long time on me and seemed to do a good job. The only weird part was that Dr. Kami never came back in at the end to check her work. Every other dentist I've ever been to, that's standard procedure to check things over after the hygienist is done. Maybe the hygienists here are just that good? Who knows...either way, that's really my only big gripe about this practice. I like that he doesn't try to upsell you on things or use scare tactics to make you get extra work done. The only thing I was told at my initial exam was that I needed two fillings but they were never pushy about it. I scheduled it on my own for 4 months later and never got any pushing or phone calls etc. in-between to hurry up and do it. I came back here yesterday for a filling and that went very well (despite me having to pay way more out of pocket because they're out of network :( They use the resin filling v. amalgam which is awesome because a) you don't have to worry about potential metals seeping out into your system and causing potential neurological issues and b) it can be colored to the shade of your tooth so you can't even see it when it's done. Awesome. Apparently, this practice stopped using metal fillings 15 years ago, which is so ahead of the curve, considering some dentists still do despite its controversy! (I was worried about it, so I asked a lot of questions prior to my filling). Dr. Kami came in first to numb me and drill and then left two hygienists to finish the job of filling and sealing. Which again was fine, but thought it was super weird that he didn't double check their work when it was over. I didn't see him again after he was in initially. This is where the one star off part comes in. If only for peace of mind, I think it's appropriate for the doctor to come back in and look at you, especially after a filling if not after a cleaning. Big points for Dr. Kami calling me later in the evening to check on me, though! That was a great last touch point for doctor-patient. Overall pretty happy with this place, will definitely come back for my next 6 month cleaning! read more

My boyfriend, like many people, HATED the dentist. After he started seeing Dr. Kami, his hatred shrank into dislike. Instead of flat out refusing to go, he will actually agree to an appointment. He likes how personable Dr. Kami is and how honest he is about procedures and pain. His staff go out of their way to make a trip to the dentist a more pleasant experience, so if you don't like dental work but need to see one, Kami is your guy. read more

Chomp on this people! Dr. Kami rocks my world! Their new digs are awesome, state of the art and very nice. Apparently lots of time and planning went into the building... BUT more importantly, Dr. Kami is hands down THE best dentist I have ever been to. First off, the guy remembers more stuff about me than I do about myself.... how the heck does he do that? No idea, but its impressive just the same. My care and treatment of the old grill is simply the greatest. I recently had a to have a night guard made, yeah, blame the recession for the recent clenching at night that is shattering my teeth, and the first guard for some reason did not fit. Barry himself came in and made sure the new mold they took was absolutely perfect. And voila, it was! I have been a patient for 8 years and plan to be til the man retires! read more

I have had a dental phobia since childhood, but Dr. Kami is so excellent a dentist that my fear is lessening with each visit. Dr. Kami just replaced a crown for me and the experience was painless (my first ever painless dental work). Dr. Kami was so deft that the drilling I dreaded was over quickly. Dr. Kami has high tech equipment to build a permanent crown right then and there (at other dentists' offices, I had to have a temporary crown and needed a return visit to get the permanent crown). Dr. Kami is reassuring and good-humored, as well as terrifically good at his work. He is by far the best dentist I've encountered in any of the cities I've lived in, including New York, Philadelphia, and Washington D.C. It's also nice that all members of Dr. Kami's staff are pleasant, as is the office. Cathy the hygienist is excellent at her work as well. My phobia is tottering. read more

The most amazing, kind, professional and generous Dentist/ Doctor I've ever met! Im a traveler on a low budget and had a gums infection. I knew I had to take care of it before my next trip, but was concerned about the expenses that might be involved, not to mention what to expect in a dentistry in a foreign country. I didnt want to take my chances and chose the first recommended dentistry on Yelp. The team was very welcoming, nice and patient. Dr Kami introduced himself and had a genuine small talk with me. He did a thorough examination, explained the situation and answered my questions patiently. He was very kind and gave me advices as if I was his daughter. When we finished he asked me to call him the next day to let him know if I feel better. What stroke me the most is, as soon as he realized I was concern about the expenses he reassured me that I shouldn't worry about it. At first I thought he was gonna give me a discount, but when I came to check out I realized the visit, X-Ray and Antibiotics were free of charge!! That was definitely one of the best experiences for me this trip. I am grateful and very much appreciative for their service. If I was a resident here this would definitely be my dentistry! Let me start off my saying i pass this building almost everyday and never knew it was a dentist office!! I found them on my husbands benefit page. I called and i was able to come in right away! Very nice enviroment! Everyone is very professional! I was having trouble with my husbands insurance and they took the time to wait for my husband to call his employer and straigten every thing out!
