Sometimes you come across remarkable people with with a heart of gold. Dr. Kami is one of those people. I had to fly very unexpectedly to Berkeley on a Sunday. The very next day, my tooth was really hurting, and I knew something was wrong. I called Dr. Kami's office, deciding on him after reading reviews, and oh my gosh, the man is brilliant and kind. Not only did he fit me in (on the Office lunch- Thank you Annie) he took time to actually talk to me and get to know me. I found this to be UNBELIEVABLY kind because I don't live here and it's very clear from my address and insurance. But he took time and he asked me about who I was and then informed me that I would need a root canal, which pretty much terrified me. He reassured me that I would be in good hands and was able to get me in with Dr. Priya O'Callaghan at Endo Specialists. I am preparing to leave tomorrow, but I am going to include a visit to his office the next time I am here to discuss Aesthetic procedures. I've come to learn that my root canal is due to grinding, and my teeth are suffering because of it. [ During Covid Review ] I have a couple fears and one of them being the dentist. Not going to lie, I just had pretty bad experiences with dentists growing up where it traumatized me to the adult I am now. However, Dr. Kami and his employees are the best here and I love coming here when I need a teeth cleaning. If you are a new patient, you will need to fill out a new patient form that is found on their website. I liked that in one of the questions, they ask "how fearful are you of the dentist" I definitely put a 10 on that and they acknowledged it during my appointment. Dr. Kami and his assistants put my fears at ease and made sure to go slow which is fantastic. Prior before entering your appointment, you give them a call and someone will come out to take your temperature. Afterwards, you head to the back and sign an agreement form just simply stating that you understand that with covid, all the employees are wearing protection gear and that they will provide the best care for each patient. I really enjoyed my experience here from each employee who made sure I was fine during each procedure, Dr. Kami being so kind, and how quickly everything was done. I rarely write reviews, but when you encounter dental practice that goes above and beyond, every time , you owe it to them to share the love! I have always had dental issues and sensitivity with my teeth since I was young, and hated going to the dentist for checkups/cleanings because every dentist I'd go to would be reprimanding, too rough, and unhelpful. That ended when I started going to Dr. Kami 10 years ago. He helped me understand that my dental issues were mostly contributed from my genetic makeup and it wasn't my fault that I had so many cavities! He was the first dentist to help me understand that, and it made me feel so much better! His dental hygienists and office staff are kind, talented, always make sure I'm comfortable, and resolve any issues I have. Dr. Kami treats his patients like family, and makes sure to give nothing but the best treatment. He is engaging, warm, and incredibly talented. He even calls his patients at the end of the day to make sure they feel ok and see if they have any questions! I have had many cleanings (Dani is incredible!!), fillings, and a few crowns, and never once felt any pain or discomfort. Dr. Kami always makes sure to numb the area perfectly and carefully, and checks in along the way to make sure you're comfortable. His office has top of line technology with the most advanced cameras/digital videos to view every angle and nook of your teeth. It's also impeccably clean, and sanitary. After a treatment if I ever noticed anything that bothered me, they will squeeze me in and see me within 24 hours to fix the issue. I can't give enough praise to this amazing dental practice. Today I got my first ever crown. First I want to say that I'm Wow'd on how beautiful and perfect my crown looks and feels. I rarely have any cavities/fillings, so i was kinda nervous about having to get a crown. I was very happy to know that at least i didn't need a root canal first. Dr Kami was very gentle with giving me my numbing shot. He explained the whole procedure and helped me feel comfortable. While drilling, he was fast and didn't give me any kind of discomfort. I'm amazed on the technology offered in this office. They did a computer scan on my teeth and bite to get the impressions. I was told to return in approximately 1hr. Just enough time for me to drop my daughter off at school (she also had a filling appt) and return. My crown was made in the office. No needing to send to outside lab to be made. We tried it on and omg... it was beautiful and felt so good. Bite was perfect. No needing to adjust it at all. New crown was delivered and cemented in my mouth within two hrs. It was my first appointment and my last appointment with this office. I really like Dr. Kami, but they are no longer Delta Dental provider. The reason I only gave them 2 star is because they should have told me that they are getting out Delta net work. and it will cost me a twice as much for my dental work. Also they charged me extra $25 for Covid 19 PPE fee after they rendered the service. If they really need extra $25 ? They refunded me $25 after I complained. Dr. Kami recommended me to deep cleaning, since it cost $$$, I told that I can't afford for a deep cleaning and I only interested for normal cleaning. Dr. Kami is a freakin' angel. When it comes to dentists, I can be a Goldilocks patient. This dentist is too spacey, this dentist is too high-pressure, and on and on. But, this Goldilocks found that Dr. Kami's office was just right. Top ten reasons why Dr. Kami is the absolute best dentist in the Berkeley area: 10. His office has a parking lot 9. He has state-of-the-art equipment 8. He puts chapstick on you when he's working on your teeth 7. His hygienists check your face for cancer by giving you a soothing face massage 6. His hygienists narrate what they're doing while they're doing it, "Now I'm going to work on this side of your mouth, you will feel a tingling sensation." 5. He doesn't use scare tactics to make you get more work done than you can afford. 4. He says its okay to call his cell phone if you need to reach him after hours 3. After doing a filling, he calls in the evening to make sure everything is okay. 2. He gives his patients mouth guards free of cost (worth at least $500) 1. When you have an unexpected charge on your bill for an x-ray that insurance won't cover, Kami's office will help resolve the discrepancy while making you feel great. Seriously classy. Gratitude! So, Sunday I chip my two bottom teeth. (Bummer, I know.) I call at 9am yesterday to schedule an appointment with my dentist of many years, Dr. Kami. They offer to get me in right away that day. Alas, they are in Berkeley & my preference would be to have a bit of time to plan as it's an hour ride for me to their office on BART. They offer a noon appointment today. I get to the office on time, in the exam chair on schedule, and the hygienist asks me if would like to have it fixed today as they've blocked off enough time on their schedule, "just in case" it's what I wanted. I say, "probably." She begins setting up everything needed for the procedure she thinks will happen. Dr. Kami walks in and asks about my family by name and if we have any trips planned for the summer. I tell him our plans. He spends a few minutes talking about the solution he recommends. He is thorough and I trust him and so I have no questions. The finance person comes in. She goes over what the cost is prior to my procedure. I agree to the cost since it was less than I had transferred earlier that day to my bank account and in anticipation of the appointment. The hygienist administers this slightly bitter painless awesome non-shot rub on stuff that numbed my whole mouth, but only for the duration of my visit. This is so much better than hours of your face feeling like you're drooling all over yourself! Before administering yummy flavored lip balm to prevent chapping and ticking it into my hand as his gift, Dr. Kami asks about any food allergies I might have. Then, we both laugh a little as my food allergies probably would be a super weird flavor for a chapstick. Dr. Kami introduces me to his "expert" for my procedure and leaves me in her care, along with the hygienist. They take great care of me and do a wonderful job (apologies for not having their names, but everyone I've ever been to there is awesome!). After sitting in the chair for over an hour, I'm drained afterwards; however, not at all in pain. They tell me I can eat, drink, etc right away. I have an ice cream cone for lunch. I take BART back to San Francisco. At 7:53pm, my phone is ringing. It's a local number and I'm watching BBC news. I hesitate to answer as there's no caller ID. I answer it anyways. It's Dr. Kami. He's calling to see how I'm feeling. Wow, just WOW! And it's not the first time he's called to check in after hours. If you're looking for a dentist, I highly recommend Dr. Barry Kami in Berkeley. Dr Kami is a SCAMMER. I went in just to get an inlay re-fitted, and he claimed he couldn't do that because it doesn't fit any more, and that I need to pay him almost $2,000 for a crown instead. He's clearly lying because the inlay literally fell out of my tooth, and my regular dentist in my hometown can't believe what he's claiming. The idea that he can't fit it in now, can't shave a little off it even if that was true, and didn't offer me a temporary dressing for it, just proves that he's only interested in scamming patients and screwing them for as much money as he possibly can, regardless of what treatment they actually need. The office is modern and always sparkling clean. Last year -- since I had a problem with teeth grinding -- I was given a night guard for free, and it was 3D-printed by a machine during the same appointment. The office also has the ability to 3D-print zirconia crowns within three hours as well. (At other dentists' offices, getting a new crown often requires a followup appointment). After a long and extensive search, I found Dr. Barry Kami not through my dental provider suggestions, but yes, through yelp! Dr. Kami was recommended to my wife and I through a friend. He raved how he loves his dentist since he was a kid and we cannot thank him enough for referring us. The office can send appointment reminders through text and/or email. Dr. Kami has a free private parking lot behind the building which took away the hassle of finding street parking in Berkley. There are two lovely receptionists that greet with a big smile as you enter. The waiting room is very clean and spacious, it reminds me of a hotel atrium. They ask you to sit and wait until an examination room opens. Examination rooms are what you expect it to be, dental chair and equipment. They have magazines for patients to browse while waiting. Dr. Kami is very nice, professional, and personable. He took the time to really get to know me by asking about my hobbies and occupation. He also emphasizes to please do not hesitate to call if there is an emergency. The examination was very thorough as he focused on oral health and not only my teeth. He inspected for potential bumps, lymph nodes, gum health, and dental health. I had my teeth cleaned by one of the dental hygienist and she did a thorough job and was practically pain free. Talked to the receptionist who said they were really busy right now, could they call me back. Gave my number and waited two days for a call back that never happened. After reading all the positive reviews on Yelp I called up Dr. Kami's office when one of my teeth started hurting and he scheduled me for an appointment the next day. After a quick X-ray by one of his many lovely assistants he explained that I was suffering from slow nerve death in the tooth as a result of a previous dental surgery and he managed to get me an appointment with Dr. Chalmers over at Endo Specialists in El Cerrito later the same afternoon. Dr. Kami was fast, friendly, and personable. The quick exam and X-ray cost a total of $42 which seems more than reasonable, especially since he was able to see me on such short notice and convince the root canal doctor to take me on the same day. ============================================= EDIT: After getting thoroughly ripped off by the root canal specialist that Dr. Kami recommended I've been forced to knock 2 stars off my review. Yeah, the guy he recommended did a good job, but over $1,200 for a root canal is ridiculous, especially when other dentists I trust are charging in the neighborhood of $400. read more

Not sure where else you could go to get such excellent treatment! I was a new client with a broken crown; they handled it quickly and efficiently (they have in-house fabricating capabilities) in about 3 hours instead of the 3 WEEKS it took to get the original crown (that broke) from my previous dentist. They have really good books in the lobby! And really good flowers! Good art! And they stay on top of all the new dental bells and whistles. In addition to adding to your own experience, I think staying abreast of new technology helps the staff stay interested and engaged. Most important to me: not one of the staff said a word about what all kind of desperate measures I needed to take right away (like a million dollar deep cleaning, etc, etc.) Dr. Kami called to check on me that evening. I've been to Dr. Kami before when I had no insurance, and he was totally awesome. Now that I do have insurance through my wife, I figured I would go back to him. I developed huge holes in my canine teeth when some old bonding broke off and scheduled an emergency appointment because I was in so much pain. When I went in, Dr. Kami and his assistant BOTH said they could see the holes and he stuck a pokey in them and I acknowledged that I felt pain.... and then told me that "I needed new bonding done"....BUT...he instead gives me Sensodyne toothpaste and a mouth guard "free of charge" and tells me to come back in a few weeks if the pain persists?!?!?!?! I was shocked. He couldnt possibly be doing this because he thinks I still have no insurance right? Wrong. My wife calls him back when we get home, very upset at my treatment. He then proceeds to tell her that "he treated me like he would treat his family: doing the least expensive thing first...and if i wanted filling or bonding done, I should have said something because my teeth had no holes and were just flat?!?! (my wife can see the holes, and the Dr. & assnt saw them..uhhh..WHAT?!)" and after she explains that we have insurance he says "that if I could come back in he would do the bonding." ?!?!? I should have told him, the dentist, what work I needed done?! I, like most people, tend to go to the dentist because I AM NOT A DENTIST!!! Thats like going to a hospital and telling them you want a liver transplant because you have a toothache, and they do it. It's the wife's birthday. I already missed over an hour and a half of work for stuff I could have gotten at Walgreens. Fully expected to give 5 stars too. :( read more

Initially, I was really nervous because I had a bad experience at my previous dentist. After four years of avoiding the letters "DDS" like the plague, I finally decided to go due to a persistent toothache I had been having. Dr. Barry not only looked at my teeth himself, but he was very amicable and explained why my teeth were hurting. After he recommended me a periodontist (it turns out I need a gum graft), he directed me to a very friendly hygienist who was shockingly very gentle with my teeth. My previous dentist always made my teeth bleed profusely and my gums would actually hurt during the process. I don't know what this lady did (or didn't do), but I couldn't feel a thing. TL;DR? This place definitely deserves the five stars. For a consultation and cleaning, it was ~$300, but my insurance (UC Berkeley's SHIP) covered ~$220 of it. read more

The staff here is okay. The dental hygenists do their thing, it hurts but my teeth feel clean afterwards. I could do without the judgemental side comments about how often I floss and brush (I floss 1-2 times a day and brush after every meal). The receptionist is what gets me. She was supposed to get back to me regarding the pricing of cavities my last two appointments and failed to do so both times. I ordinarily wouldn't mind but this is regarding a time sensitive issue and I think it is really unprofessional to not get back to a client. As for all the raving reviews on Dr. Kami, he always pops in for two seconds after my cleaning, makes a rather insensitive comment about my lack of flossing then leaves. Also, for every old filling he wants to replace it with a $1,000 crown. Ridiculous! Sure go for the "awesome new digs" but don't forget that you foot the (hefty) bill. read more

Best pain management EVER. This is a big deal when needing dental work. Dr Kami is professional, friendly and efficient. He has loads of staff, is paperless and uses state of the art dental tech. His office is clean and visually comfortable. I called as a new patient, with a tooth broken half off. Two hours later I left with a perfect crown. update next day, 4 August: I had two seperate phone calls with the office today, one with Carla regarding the billing issues, which I feel are resolved - just make sure you ask for the charges beforehand, as it may not be their policy (I couldn't tell, but this was the crux of my issue) to tell you what stuff costs before it happens, but you still have to pay before they bill insurance, so it was really confusing. She had to have Dr. Kami call me back because he was with a patient, and he did within the hour. He answered the questions I felt I didn't get to ask during the office visit, and apologised and took responsibility for the issues with communication. (re the night guard - they are going to wait until after I see the Orthodontist, which they didn't say yesterday, but makes sense.) Regarding my experience with the hygenist (Danielle), he apologised and explained that she was probably not the best fit for me. Other patients like her because of her efficiency, and that I probably needed someone different. He wanted to make things better, so now I have an appointment in a month (the soonest they could get me in again) for another cleaning with a different hygenist (Nicole). I anticipate the next visit to go better. I definitely appreciate Dr. Kami's response to my issues and feel like I was heard and my issues weren't just brushed off, that he appreciated me letting them know about my experience and giving them the opportunity to make it better. This is a really great thing and has turned an experience that has had me in tears several times into one that I am hopeful and expectant that it will be better. But after two checkups, I had my first cleaning here today. I'll revisit this review after I talk to them tomorrow. I had several discussions with the girl who saw me first who helped Dr. Kami during the checkup. Then I was kind of just left in the chair waiting awhile for my hygienist who showed up finally & said "come with me" but didn't indicate that I was actually changing rooms for the cleaning. Weird (plus it's kinda weird that I saw the Dr. before, not after.) that I had to ask if I needed to bring my stuff. Then I had to tell her everything the Dr. had discussed (not my job?) and repeat three timed that I already have an appt. with their Orthodontist. Then she scraped my teeth. That was ok except I told her two teeth were really sensitive & she kept spraying cold water on them over & over, me cringing and jerking each time. Then the polish. Which lasted about 45 seconds and was half my tongue. I was immediately rushed out of the chair & to make a 6 month appointment & pay a bill that was just a lot of numbers thrown at me (which turned out to be the wrong ones I had a bill for $28 from my first visit, she charged me $68. I didn't have it with me so that's something I'm bringing up tomorrow.) Uh. I never once got to look at her work or ask about a couple bad spots. I had to ask for the flouride that the other girl had said she'd go over with me & I think she gave me the wrong stuff & didn't let me choose. Once out in the car I finally got a look at my teeth & I was able to scrape stuff off with my nail. WTF? Plus there are spots that she *missed*. Ugh. I really didn't need this. At least they're nearby. Oh and the reminder card they sent had the wrong time on it. Another wtf. Just remembered something. I was having so much sensory overload at the time from the lights and the water & air on my sore teeth & being moved around that I'm still processing things. So during the checkup part before the "cleaning" and before Dr. Kami came in, his assistant spoke with me about getting a different night guard - my old one from Dr. Lim (N. Berkeley Dental Arts - not recommended) is hard plastic & she said they'd get me a new softer one. That was the only time it was discussed. Dr. Kami never asked if I had questions at the end of his checkup, either. I had a few, but forgot since he never asked. I really felt like there was a lot of waiting to be rushed around. And I also felt like they didn't bother to look over the chart from my first visit (otherwise they'd not be getting me a referral to an ortho I already have one for three times). The assistant seemed to know stuff or remember it, but it didn't matter since nothing we talked about was actually done. The hygienist never asked me if I was OK when hurting me, only after flossing before polishing, once. Again, I left a message this evening for them to call me tomorrow and will be talking with them to hopefully resolve these issues. I will update my review with the results tomorrow. read more

So glad I switched to Barry. New, way ultra modern state of the art facilities, Barry is a super friendly, rock star dentist, I am always seen on time, and art books for you to look at while you wait (5 mins. max). But here is the kicker: I don't know if I should say this but THEY MADE ME A NIGHT GUARD FOR FREE!!! Those things are like $350!! WTF? I'm not saying they will do that for you but god damn! Unbelievable. I don't even know what to say except go here. Your teeth and gums will thank you. Oh and not that expensive either. $160 for complete x-rays and around $107 for cleaning.
