I waited to write a review about Dr. Hites until we had some time and experience under our belt with him. I researched Bio Dentistry and on a recommendation from my naturopathic doctor chose Dr. Hites. He has replaced all of my mercury as well as my husbands with skillful precaution and has also treated my daughter's complicated mouth issues with compassion, grace and patience. He is grounded, calm, and professional and has an excellent bedside manner. We feel safe in his care and relieved to have a dentist who is knowledgeable and up to date on alternative health modalities without ever making us feel wrong that we didn't know. For example, I had no idea the extreme importance of nose breathing which Dr. Hites educated me about and he supports the way I aspire to nourish my family, with nutrient dense food and no processed food. While he is efficient and business like and not a person who lingers or inquires into our personal life experience, he does provide a very high quality level of care and I have now referred him to several of my friends and colleagues. A special shout out to Patricia, one of his assistants who makes my daughter feel like the most important person on earth. She is a saint and a warm hearted love bug who makes up for the lack of enthusiasm that a couple of the other staff lack. It's all nicely balanced. One minor negative issue is that I have at times felt a little bothered with one of the staff who is curt and less than friendly but I try to grant her her innocence since all of the other staff are for the most part gracious. I am grateful we found our dentist and I highly recommend him. He can be trusted and gives excellent care. read more

I have been in the Channing dental with Dr. Hites for 25 years. He was a good doctor and Channing dental was good a good office. But lately my experience with the office have been awful. They refuse to do "Preop" It means that they refuse to send it to your insurance so you would find out how much is covered. Instead they give you some random number, that they think it would cover. And it is usually a wrong number.They put a pressure on me to pay in full before the procedure, telling that it would cost me more if I did not pay in full weeks before the expensive procedure would happen. When Insurance partially reimburses you it goes to them again even though it was paid in full. If you have an insurance make sure it is written somewhere that it pays you and not them. And then you have to call them again and again to get your insurance reimbursement There is a lot of confusion in the office. They make an appointment and then when you arrive on time tell you that you were not scheduled. When you ask to talk to the manager Marissa they say she was not there, she will call you. She does not return your call. Dr.Hites himself became too expensive and does not always tell you a price for the procedure before he does it. In other words a total disappointment. read more

First off I would like to say all the staff and everything are really nice and respectful I was comfortable there that was the first and only time I had a cleaning they did something to one of my teeth and it wasn't like that before my cleaning I talked to the dentist and several other people they don't want to correct the problem and I'm not going back there because of it also there are a little expensive for my budget but they don't want to own up to what they did to my tooth and I don't feel that that's fair and they want me to come back for cleaning and more work one tooth they want to charge me $10,000 for and you cannot make payments you have to pay upfront I'm very disappointed that they messed my tooth up and won't own up to it so now I left stuck to pay for whatever needs to be done with this tooth read more

The dentist came in and inspected my teeth and said I had two cavities that I needed to fill. I was skeptical as I have been going to a dentist on schedule since I was young. I took my x-rays and pictures back to another 2 dentists and they said while it's technically a small cavity, it's an over diagnosis to do a filling on it as cavities of that size can be maintained forever and doing a filling is over invasive. The hygienist definitely rushed only doing 50% of my teeth before stopping. It was like 20 min total, teeth still felt dirty after that cleaning. Also they expected me to pay a deposit to reserve a cavity filling appointment... Everyone was friendly, but the care was not top notch read more

The billing department sent me several emails and texts saying I owed them money (I did not). The messages came with threats of additional fees. When I called, they said they have no record of those texts (although it came directly from their number). Now I receive reminders that I have an upcoming appointment (I do not.... My first visit with Channing Dental and I can't say enough about the professionalism and dedication these folks show their patients. Kiana and Sarah the front desk ladies were so helpful, kind, patient with all my questions I asked. I felt like I was part of their family. I left after the business changed hands and i was transferred away from Dr. Hites without notice or consent. The new dentist was blasé and inattentive. I received poor care for the next few months. When I emailed to express my concerns, the response was disrespectful. They tried to charge me for my dental records when I told them I was leaving. This is a recent follow-up on my positive 2014 review. About two years ago Dr. Hites' practice changed to Channing Dental with a new dentist, Dr. Suri, who became my treating dentist. I had no problem with him as a dentist, but under his leadership, the practice turned upside down quickly. There was a 100% staff turnover, including all hygienists. The check-in procedure became self-service and tablet-based, which may be appreciated by the under-40 crowd but is ageist in forcing technology on all patients, receptive or not. Expensive renovations of the office and equipment were undertaken, soon reflected in significant increases in service fees, considerably higher than normal dental inflation. The change was most unsettling for me, who has been with this practice since 1977. I never saw the same hygienist twice; even some new staff changed yet again. The straw that broke the camel's back was the change in billing: services were to be paid immediately when rendered, and any reimbursement was mailed by the insurance company to me weeks after the appointment and was often less than half of the service. Except for crowns or implants, I don't recall having to pay for services before. Like the "self-service" check-in procedure, I perceive this as insulting modern business behavior to "push work onto the customer" and "avoid costly customer care" under the guise of "service." After two years of non-stop changes and questionable "innovations." I've reluctantly left the practice for one of many dental practices with a human touch. read more

I was a client of Dr. Hites. He sold his practice and the successor business is Channing Dental. There was a 100 percent turnover of staff within a few months. The new hygienists change repeatedly. My most recent teeth cleaning was by a man who scraped and dug at my teeth while telling me that he preferred the manual method because the newer treatments were for lazy hygienists and that the manual approach is more precise. My teeth ached for three weeks afterwards. He couldn't even thread the dental floss between my teeth. He claimed to be a licensed dentist who was new to the practice after taking a respite from dentistry. This was the most miserable dental appointment in my life. Another family member purchasws the prepaid dental savings plan. Billing staff would forget to apply the discounts -- repeatedly. Channing Dental would try to upsell cosmetic dentistry Dr. Hites provided outstanding care for our family for more than 20 years. His office staff was professional. Channing Dental, on the other hand, doesn't deserve my business. read more

His office is full of happy employees, who always get thanked and thank each other. It is lovely to see. I am also so impressed by how much Dr. Suri is investing in new technology. Up to 1 -2 yrs ago it has been 5 star experience. This time it was not the same at all after many yrs.another office changes now. I was doing my best to hear and understand receptionist and the "new" one came over and literally tried to take took control and was not gracious. The other receptionist put their head down and I didn't feel like starting over explaining and figuring out was best time for next appt etc. The exam was rushed. I've had better, I've had worse. Pro-s :good cavity filings, easy cleanings. Years ago in an emergency they quickly,inexpensively and easily popped an old crown back on, so thats a pro too. I've had fillings done here that surpassed in quality other ones. Cons: I went in with serious gum infection and they UNDER TREATED it twice, meaning its still there (despite me naming both times it likely needed more full treatment.) Took out the wrong X-rays (from years back) on multiple visits (!!!) despite having a new set!!! Looked confused when my mouth didn't match. This could have caused an actual issue, but *I* had to catch it and correct it and tell them to find the new X-rays (!). I appreciate the good fillings and holistic approach but have zero tolerance for dentists who cannot hear me and appreciate my own body self-knowledge, particularly twice in a row. Go there for your cleanings and stuff and basic stuff sure. I'd be hesitant to go deeper. Dental school and doctoring bear merit, however, sometimes patients actually have more insight into their own bodies and needs than "protocol" would dictate. Listen to us. read more

I'd read up on the connection between amalgam fillings and thyroid problems, which my then-dentist scoffed at. So I went to Dr. Hites six months ago and got my amalgam fillings removed. He took all the right precautions, and I think I was given a swig of cholorella-type liquid afterward, which I'd read helps bind mercury. So I was impressed- felt like I was in real good hands. My husband's dentist is telling him he needs a root canal, but I'm wary of other dentists now. So we've made an appointment with Dr. Hites, and I'm confident he'll help my husband make the right choices. Just starting with Dr Hites. From the start the staff is professional and office streamlined for easy in and out. Dr Hites is clear concise and has been at this for over 20 years. I have used other Holistic dentists and confident with my experience so far. Has been waaay better than past holistic dds for TMJ. I was sorry to see the negative reviews and its funny how what I find professional and streamlined another woman found staff too robotic and another conplained about a specific employee. Feel the person guving bad review couldve just mentioned to the staff to stop talking faith or meat!! Whats wrong with having healthy boundaries and just saying no to her comments. Geez. I spoke with same gal and she was comforting. I wholeheartedly accept Dr Hites Professional demeanor. Talent is talent. Highly recommend. Noticed benefit in health first day upper and lower appliances went in. And he massaged my head and neck with first installation. Not all care to that degree. In 3 words: quick, quality, professional. I loath dentist visits. That said, I live 112 miles away and still make sure all my dentistry gets done here. I honestly don't understand why people complain about staff not being chipper. I want them to make me smile for months, not for a moment. Niceties are irrelevant compared to quality treatment. I went in this morning for a cleaning, thinking I would walk out with follow up appointments for a filling that broke (work done by a different dentist). Instead they fit me into their schedule, and I walked out in less than 2 hours with (what I thought would be) days worth of work taken care of. They've got anesthetics down too; not too little (ouch) or too much (can't feel face). My only complaint is being a captive audience in one-sided conversations, but that seems to be standard among all dentists. read more

I'd be concerned post covid. I've been going here for years. I went in for a cleaning this week, but I won't be going back. Didn't feel like they were taking adequate precautions. Fellow patient was in waiting room with no mask on, reading a magazine and drinking coffee. Dr. Hites was walking around with mask under his nose. And in the dental chair, there was no vacuum device to remove aerosoled droplets or an UV virus killing device. No use of a virus killing mist either. The hygienist said for aerosoled droplets it was a filter in the central air. Not even a filter for each examination room. At bottom: go at your own risk. Also I had had some slightly receding gums and he insisted they were cavities so he pulled my gums downs more to drill and fill about 6 teeth. Just a few years later they all came out. And years after I had been a patient here (like 5 years!) I was contacted by his office saying they had over charged me and that I had a check to pick up. It turned out to be a fat check, like $450 or something? How does that just happen? Very odd experience here, to say the least. read more

A scam. I had always had great teeth and regular cleanings. Went to dr. S. At this office for cleaning. With x rays was told I needed 7 fillings for cavities, quoted thousands. Was so terrified to spend all that and fit that much work into my life- plus bizarre religious pamphlets in the office- that I never went back. They called me to come in for my work every month for another year. I moved and never found a dentist or hot cleanings for 3 yrs terrified to pay for this work. Finally went in this week and full x rays showed I never had any cavities. Not one. Not even ones that could have remineralized miraculously. This was not a pleasant dentil experience and I would not go back...the dentist had no bedside manor and it felt like everything was rushed. He actually stabbed me with a dentil tool by mistake and I yelped, and my jaw popped which it had never done before. He worked extremely quickly which made me nervous and I left wondering if he did a good job or not. Yesterday, about six months after the appt, the filling he did fell out. I've never in my life had a filling just fall out..obviously he did not do a good job. He did have some knowledge of auto-immune disorders and did muscle test me for a type of antiseptic that i tolerated relatively well. so that part was ok. read more

I have been a patient of Dr. Hites for more than 20 years. I love his chairside manner. Let's face it, no one enjoys going to the dentist. It helps, however, to have a dentist who is as personable and warm as Dr. Hites. Dr. Hites is a holistic dentist. One of the first things that he did for me was the removal of my old and degraded mercury fillings. A few months ago, a friend visiting from out of town lost a molar cap. She didn't actually lose it, but it came off her tooth. I had her call Dr. Hite's office, and they got her in the very next day. The bad news is that Dr. Hites has cut back on his hours. first off i don't care much if the staff is super perky. i don't care if the dentists and assistants talk all manners of gibberish either. not that they do. i just read some of the reviews here and wanted to address that since i am giving him a high rating. about 5 years ago our dentist wanted to remove my wife's tooth and do an implant. because implants are so long term (maybe for life) i decided to read up on them. down the rabbit hole i went. i learned about mercury in amalgams, troubles with root canals (my wife has had 2 badly infected root canals over the last 15 years), troubles with dental materials in general, links between heart disease and dentistry...in short a lot of things i didn't know before. about the same time our current dentist (who we liked personally) was recommending a root canal for me. long story short, i switched to hites. no root canal and no trouble with that tooth in 4 years. he removed my mercury fillings at my request. he also did a scaling which changed all my pockets by 1-2. dentistry is something that can very much affect your overall health. i had no idea. this guy is way ahead of conventional ADA dentists imo. but if you think mercury in you mouth is ok, if you think root canals can be sterilized, if you think dentistry is separate from overall body health then any old dentist should do. read more

I went to Dr. Hites for orthodontics and it was a complete disaster. He prescribed the Bioblock appliance for me (which I do not recommend). Right after he installed it, he left the room without seeing my reaction, which was very traumatic as I was gagging and feeling like I was going to die. Surprisingly, he said that he'd never had a patient that couldn't wear the appliance, but I find that hard to believe given the bulkiness of the appliance. Well, I guess I was the first! Anyway, my experience with Dr. Hites AKA "Dr. Evil" led to anxiety attacks for the next few visits with my new orthodontist and has given me eating sensations (like feeling there is something stuck in my throat) that are very realistic and scary. Additionally I was paying Top Dollar for this as he is SUPER EXPENSIVE; tried to make us pay $9000 for a disaster! read more

Front desk could be a bit more 'perky' so to speak hence the not perfect score but work done by dentist Dr Jang (I think that's her name, Dr Hites partner) was very thorough. I love that she explained everything to me along the way and took the time to answer my questions before and after. Sometimes if she has time she will also take the place of the hygenist as well which is really cool. And unlike my previous Dentist in Alameda, Dr Terecita Dean who kept trying to tell me I needed this and that and was always in a rush to her next patient (BTW, I don't think Dr Dean is honest in her work). And Dr Deans office always seems to max out the billing to my insurance hmmmm so I left. Dr Hites facitlity is truly holistic and when Dr Jang removed my mercury filling she used proper precautions ie extra oxygen, oral damn etc (i've been to Dr Hites office twice thus far) I feel that Dr Hites office and staff are honest and professional people. Granted the office is very to the point and 'simple' but I would rather go there and know that I am getting honest service and what's truly to my best health interest vs going to a place like Dr Deans which is aesthetically appealling but lacks the work ethic expected from any health professional. I am about to schedule another appointment to have my last mercury filling removed with Dr Jang. read more

I had not been to the dentist is six years. If you think that's bad, I had waited fifteen years before that! Moved from the east coast six years ago, and left a dentist I really liked. And that's not easy. Waited and waited again (don't do that!) and finally realized I really needed to go, and came here to Yelp. I was looking for a holistic-minded dentist and Dr. Hites seemed to fit the bill. I was first thrilled seeing the quaint little office on arrival. Then going into the exam rooms, was a little thrown off - totally modern (good thing) but very busy with lots of people working (seemed not so good to me). Had a cleaning done by a very nice woman (though very painful, I'm assuming from the long period since my last, though I don't know). Then xrays (very thorough and hi-tec, assuming lower radiation, being digitally done on computer). Saw Dr. Hites only about 15 minutes. He seemed very thorough and competent. But kind of cold. I didn't like that, I wanted to be coddled at the dentist so I'd feel all safe and warm and want to return. He told me I needed a filling and a tooth extracted. (and I know there's more work coming) Today, I had that filling, and a wisdom tooth pulled. There was very little pain. Almost none. Dr. Hites is really an amazing, gentle and skilled dentist. I have had some bad experiences, back to my childhood. So, I'm afraid. He's not exactly warm, just very professional. But in the end, that's exactly what I would prefer. He really knows how to start gently and even the novocaine shot was the easiest I've ever had. I was a little panicked about having a wisdom tooth pulled (first one, and at 42 years old), especially without gas or being knocked out. All I can say is Dr. Hites (and his great assistant, who was not only very friendly and warm, but they just made an awesome team!) was... elegant... in his extraction. The only pain I felt was his pushing on my jaw opposite to the tooth, leveraging for the pull. He did not offer a prescription for pain meds, and I was kind of worried about that. He gave a homeopathic remedy to take home, and said I could if necessary also use an over the counter pain reliever. Six hours later, I have relatively minor pain. Amazing. I did take some turmeric pills and also the homeopathic tincture a few times. I really think it was Dr. Hites' gentle and skilled work that left me with so little pain, though. read more

This place is the best you're going to get, especially if you are looking for a true biological dentist! I was very sick with mercury poisoning when first referred to this place by a naturopath. Dr. Hites is very compassionate and extremely knowedgable and skilled with the latest in holistic dentistry. He is very thorough and I never doubt what he and his partner, Dr. Jang, are doing. He trained Dr. Jang, who I now see regularly, as Dr. HItes is always booked, and I just love Dr. Jang now too! I drive all the way from San Jose to see Dr. Jang but after the dental hell I have been through, it is so worth knowing that I will never have dental nightmares again! Thumbs and wisdom teeth UP: this office employs environmentally and health-conscious solutions (e.g. no mercury - this is big folks) and go the extra mile to make sure the work they do is effective. Of course, siitting in a chair with your mouth wide open, with a drill and air suction entrenched therein for sometimes longer than an hour is never fun - but it is far preferable than paying the consequences for shoddy, hazardous dental work. They may not make you feel good - what good dentist does? - but they *are* good. read more

I drive all the way from Burlingame to see Dr. Hites. I've had numerous dental visits for the past 10 years due to crazy english genes so I've been to some shoddy people and some great ones, and learned the hard way: stick to the great one even if it means paying more or driving far. This office takes Delta dental, which is a plus. The front staff is OK, but I'm there to see the dentist, not have my butt kissed at check in. Seriously, Dr. Hites is looking out for your tooth health, not to line his wallet. read more

Did not care for the European lady who did my cleaning; nice enough but constantly talked and not sure I got a thorough cleaning. I've been to this dental office twice. Both times, amazing. The first round was an exam, cleaning (and follow up to fill a cavity.) The dentists here did a crackerjack job filling a deep cavity that went under the gumline, thus saving me further dental problems. Cleaning was gentle and effective. Later, came back during an emergency when an aging crown fell off another tooth- they effectively put it back on. They are high quality dentists that will keep your dentistry as clean and healthy as possible. Holistic is big for me, and these guys ace it. read more

I've been going to alot of dentists recently, and so the contrast between them is very vivid in my memory. most dentists care about making money -- indeed, in speaking to medical professionals, they've affirmed that most people in medical school are in it for the money. that is not the case with Dr. Jang. she is not only more insightful into my dental issues than the two other dentists I've seen in the last month, but is more patient and notably more compassionate. as a result, although this office is out of my Metlife PPO network, I'm willing to pay extra to go there for two fillings and an extraction. I came to this dental office because I did alot of research into dental composites for fillings -- the white kind. almost all composites that densts use contain a well-known neurotoxin/endocrine disrupter called Bis-GMA. there has been huge controversy over this chemical being in toys, and they've been pulled off the market as a result. the alternative is a PEX-based composite. in researching PEX-based composites, I found one (most don't even tell you what's in them) which is rated the most "biocompatible" by a number of professionals and a certain rating system: it's called Diamond Lite. so, I called like 30 dentists to find out if they carried it, and none had even heard of it, neither did they even KNOW about this whole neuro-toxin issue. so, I called the manufacturer to ask who they supply in my area, and the ONLY dentist who carries it in the Bay Area is this office (Dr. Hites/Jang). I think this says alot for the quality of their practice. also, this composite is more expensive than most others (I found when trying to get another dentist to order it for me and they wanted me to pay $200 out of pocket), but the cost of a filling here is competitive with other places. as far as the staff goes, I was helped by Ann, and I found her to be the most competent, helpful and patient officeperson of any of the many dentists offices I've called (which has been many) -- and I can be a pretty difficult customer sometimes. she handled me with ease... also, their office is beautiful :) read more
