Let me begin my review by stating that I am NOT a patient of Dr. Citron. I found Dr. Citron here on Yelp when an unexpected accident occurred, resulting in a tooth cracking and the filling it housed became loose and eventually came out. Of course, this happened last June during the pandemic (thanks 2020!). To make matters worse, my dentist was in New York City, and due to NYC being a global hotspot in the early phase of CoV2 showing up in the US, NYC businesses had been closed for months, which resulted in my dentist retiring his practice June 30th. I was not about to risk my health by hopping on a plane to JFK and even if I would've done so, I would've had to then quarantine for 14 days, which would've been a week or more past the date he was retiring his practice. That is when I turned to Yelp to find a local dentist whose front office staff might not gasp and recoil in horror at the thought of a complete stranger asking to be seen for an x-ray in the midst of a global viral pandemic that science was contemplating as being transmitted via aerosolized droplets from our exhalations. (i.e. dentistry had suddenly become an extremely risky business). I called Dr. Citron's office and spoke to his front-office staff, who were lovely and understanding. I explained the situation, told them I completely understood the risk they take every time a patient opens their mouth, and explained how I had chosen to quarantine alone, to keep myself healthy, to protect others, and to be a part of the solution to mitigate community spread until an effective treatment was discovered (at that time, an effective vaccine was likely 2-3 years away, at the soonest). They listened with empathy and seemed to appreciate my candor and my concern for their health. I was not in any pain, thankfully, so I let them know this was urgent but not an emergency. They very graciously were able to squeeze me in for an x-ray. I can't tell you how grateful I was then to Dr. Citron's staff for being willing to not only squeeze me into their already busy schedule, especially as difficult as PPE was for them to come by at that time (the demand in ICUs across the globe had seriously drained the global supply), but also to be willing to take such a risk on a total stranger they had no obligation to help. Most people have no idea how much risk dental hygienists, dentists, and other back-office staff take every day that they choose to go to work and do their job during the CoV2 pandemic. Dentistry is probably the most dangerous profession to be in right now, and these professionals don't have the same level of protective equipment you see those treating CoVid19 patients wearing. PRO TIP: Be an empathic person and a decent human being. Before you go see your dentist, be sure to gargle Listerine Cool Mint mouthwash for at least 30 seconds. When I moved to Berkeley from southern California almost 4 years ago, I was faced with the daunting task with finding new doctors, dentist, hair dresser, etc. I found two highly rated dentists in my area on Yelp. I called the one closer to me and was told that the soonest appointment available was three months out. That wasn't going to work for me. I contacted Dr. Citron's office, which was just as highly rated but a little further away. They were able to get me in within two weeks. When I arrived for my first appointment I was seen almost immediately. I had a through cleaning and dental exam and was out in about half an hour. Two years ago, when an old crown bit the dust he recommended an excellent dental surgeon to remove the tooth and start the implant procedure. Dr. Citron did my implant and it has been problem-free and comfortable from day one. I have been a regular patient of Doctor Citron's ever since. His wonderful new offices make the experience even better but just as efficient! read more

I am so thankful for this dentist!!! Here is my story, I had a terrible toothache and my regular dentist was not available, the paint was 8/10 so I saw all these great reviews and called in. They were so kind, they got me in first thing the next morning and Dr Citron ended up knowing exactly the cause (my top tooth was the one in pain) but it was a lower tooth causing all the problem. (and I didn't belive this at the time but he was right) I feel so blessed and lucky to have found this great dentist! I cannot say enough good things about my experience. Updating my review. It turns out that I've now been going to Dr. Citron for 15 years, and I'm as delighted with him and his dental practice now as ever. I'm updating my review because they've recently moved offices and I just had my first visit at the new office. It's modern and well-equipped. The exam rooms in the old office were small; the ones in the new office are fully ADA accessible, to the extent that a dentist in a wheelchair could serve a patient in a wheelchair (I'm not in a wheelchair, but I was impressed at the space, and Dr. Citron told me that that's what it was designed around.) The new office has new equipment but the same friendly, personable staff. Plus there's a new dentist working with him as well; I didn't schedule my appointment with her but I met her after the visit and I wouldn't hesitate to schedule future appointments with her. read more

Very good thorough dentist. I had to go to him because of a cracked tooth emergency during the pandemic. I felt he did a great job and pays attention to detail. I had to have a crown, first one and was a little hesitant but very happy with the results. Also had a cleaning - one of the best I ever had. Dr. Citron sucks.......plaque that is. He suctioned, sonic vibrated, scraped & polished my teeth so well, my mouth feels like a car that has been heavily detailed. I don't think I will ever eat again, they feel SO slick. I am a huge puss when it comes to going to the dentist. I didn't even need a pre-anxiety pill for this appointment, as he kept it chill and kept it real. He gave me great advice and didn't freak me out on the news of a root-canal. I not only got my teeth cleaned in a timely fashion (we were on a deadline, I was being charged by the half-hour for parking), but I learned quite a bit about plaque and random trivia about the dental craft. However I am surprised that no one mentioned it is such a small office with outdated equipments and little staff. Dr. Citron is a dentist and a hygienist (for teeth cleaning) two in one. The relaxed energy of the place makes you think that you've come to catch up with favorite relatives (and forget that you're in a dentist's office). There are many reasons why I felt the need to write a 5 star, personal review for Dr. Citron & his team in Berkeley. Before even visiting the office, I took a few minutes to browse the site (listed above) and was absolutely blown away by the organization and amount of resources offered online. If you have any questions about the services offered, what to expect, et cetera then you will appreciate how helpful the website is for patients. I mean you don't even have to go in to the actual office to start getting the help and information you need, and I think that's absolutely wonderful and unique to this office. I moved from Seattle to San Francisco recently and the transition hasn't been that easy. I was not expecting to have issues migrating to a new doctor and dentistry in California - but to my dismay, there were a lot of problems in the process that I encountered. However, none of these problems stemmed from my experience with Dr. Citron. As a new patient, I felt really comfortable and welcomed into the office upon my first visit. I liked this a lot. People usually tend to go to the same dentist their entire life - and this causes new patients to feel unwelcome or even awkward at new offices. Believe me when I say that at Dr. Citron's dentistry, you will not feel this way! In fact, whether you are a new patient or a regular, you can expect genuine care from the services and overall good vibes at each appointment. I don't know about you, but when it comes to dental care, it isn't about machinery or the amount of people there are bustling around the halls.. it's about the QUALITY of services provided. I've had horrible dentists experiences in the East Bay, from dentists who seems to be keen on making you feel miserable and dentists who lines up 4-5 patients for 1 appointment slot and then tries to drill you as fast as he can with scary tools. I can assure you that Dr. Citron is not like that at all. Dr. Citron is the best dentist that I have gone to. He is very personable, friendly, and calming. He is very thorough and does all the teeth cleaning procedure himself. The two times that I've been there, I did not have to wait at all. I'm not familiar with dental tools lingo but teeth cleaning at his office is actually pretty relaxing he seldom uses those scary drill tools just to clean your teeth. I found Dr. Citron on Yelp and decided to give him a try. I moved here 2 years ago and hadn't had my teeth cleaned since, so it had been a while (I'm used to 6 month checkups). I got in the same day because a wire on my permanent retainer was sticking out and causing me a lot of pain. Although he's not an orthodontist, he trimmed the wire and sanded it down so I finally had some relief. He recommended a couple orthodontists in town just in case I had that issue again. The cleaning went smoothly. He talked me through every process and tool. He asked if I wanted Xrays but said everything looked fine, so he saved me the expense. He suggested I do it the next time around (I mentioned my insurance is changing to better coverage in a few months with my new job). He's a sweet man and very professional! I went in to have a bad filling replaced. Dr. Citron was very friendly and warm, and talked me through everything he was doing. Because the filling caused me such consistent sensitivity, he sent me home with a foul-tasting but strong flouride rinse to help build up the sensitive spot. I've been going to Dr. Citron for a few years now, and I've recommended him to loads of my friends. I've been to him for cleanings, fillings, and a crown. I really like that he doesn't have a hygenist and cleans my teeth himself - it's got to be good to have the expert looking at my teeth for more time than the average office. He says that he doesn't feel like he needs a bigger practice - that he's doing just fine with the number of patients he can handle with his small staff. I love that! I always feel like he has time to answer all of my questions and isn't rushing on to the next patient. I also really appreciate that he does not take an invasive approach. I had tooth pain, and he recommended waiting and seeing what happened instead of something aggressive (and expensive) right away. Sonja was very friendly and helpful to find an appointment for me. They accepted the X-Ray that I already have from two weeks ago from another clinic in Europe, and Doctor Citron was superlative. Granting 5 stars to a dentist is a BIG deal for me. I absolutely loathe seeing the dentist. And after having gone without health insurance for years (and subsequently no visits to the dentist's office), I was a little nervous paying Dr. Citron a visit. I needn't have worried. Not only was this visit *absolutely* painless, Dr. Citron does a great job of thoroughly and patiently explaining everything he's doing as he goes along. I've been to see him twice now - once for a cleaning, and once for a small repair on some pre-existing work. Both visits I was in and out of his office in no time. I actually like going to Dr. Citron. When I moved to Berkeley, I put off going to the dentist for 1.5 years, and by then, I was really scared to go to one for fear of the shame that might come of it. Plus, I've visited some less-than-honest dentists that would exploit my shame and tell me I had lots of cavities. However, Dr. Citron didn't make me feel bad at all, AND he didn't find any cavities. He's honest and so nice. I just had my 2nd visit to see him, and he cleaned my teeth both times. I find this great. You really get a chance to know him and ask him questions. He's very candid about advice too. He followed up with questions about my personal life that I'd shared with him on the first visit. I found that very warm and charming. He's just great. I was so reluctant to visit a dentist, but now I look forward to a visit with Dr. Citron. Plus, his toothbrushes are the best! I show mine off to all my visitors! read more

I had a great first experience seeing Dr. Citron today. Four things he did stood out as exceptional to me: 1) He did my cleaning himself, which made me feel like I was in good hands and that he cared about my teeth. 2) He made a quick height adjustment to a crown done by my previous dentist, which I anticipated would be a bigger deal. He didn't disparage her work, he just took care of it. 3) I absolutely didn't feel like he was a salesman, which was refreshing after several experiences over the last few years, where the final bill was considerably more than the estimate. In fact, he informed me that a spot I thought might be a cavity was just discoloration. 4) He took responsibility for having x-rays from my previous dentist sent over (as opposed to having me call over, which I've had to do in the past). And he's friendly and down to earth to boot! I was even able to overlook the fact that he's a USC Trojan. Highly recommended! read more

After 3 years of not going to the dentist I decided it was time. Based on reviews on Yelp I chose Dr. Citron and I was not disappointed. Dr. Citron is very warm and calming. It felt as if he'd been my dentist for a long time. His office is cozy and he gave me exceptional attention: he did the cleaning himself. He made feel like he was my advocate because he didn't try to sell me on more treatments. In fact, I needed a mouthguard and he said I should try one from a pharmacy first before deciding if I wanted to invest $150 on a custom one from him (since my insurance wouldn't cover it). I wish Dr. Citron and his staff all the sunshine, lollipops, and rainbows in the world. My ortho/dentist in LA sold his practice so I had to finish up my ortho treatment with a new guy who I did not like very much. When he took my braces off, the LA guy gave me a basic cleaning and said that the next time I came in, I'd need a deep cleaning and get fillings for "pre-cavities" I had in all four quadrants. I was surprised because I had flossed and listerined every single night of my braces treatment. I moved to the Bay Area and went to Dr. Citron for a second opinion. During my hour-long visit, Dr. Citron did many wonderful things: --He gave my mouth a clean bill of health -- no cavities and no deep cleaning needed --He sanded down this composite resin the LA ortho had lazily NOT sanded down all the way when he took my braces off --He fixed a toothache (tooth abrasion) I'd been suffering from for two weeks in two minutes --He gave me a general cleaning (since originally I came in because I thought I needed a deep cleaning) and said he would charge my insurance for the service only if they covered getting two cleanings in less than six months (the LA ortho/dentist had given me a cleaning a month prior) I think they're good about staggering their appointments because, when I came in, I only waited five or ten minutes but the receptionist apologized twice for having to make me wait. Dr. Citron is a fantastic dentist who answered all my questions and made me feel like I was in good hands. Sonia the receptionist and Chloe(?) the dental assistant are also great. read more

I made an appointment for December 28th like 2 weeks ago, and I scheduled everything for that date so that I don't have to go to work (I have a long commute to work from Berkeley everyday) on that date and take care of a lot of things - like taking my wife to a driving test at Oakland DMV etc. I received a call from the office telling me that the doctor will not work on that date and just canceled me and my wife's appointment. This has ruined my plan, and I am very disappointed. If you set up an appointment please keep them or do not make it in the first place. read more

I called to see if they accepted my insurance, they said yes and went ahead and made the appointment. When I get to the office, I filled out the patient questionnaire including my insurance information. 5 minutes before my exam and cleaning was done, they tell me they don't accept my insurance and would have to pay out of pocket for the treatment. They NEVER verified my insurance BEFORE my treatment saying the were "short-handed" that day. It was clearly a bait and switch. Don't come here unless you want to be robbed! read more
