Dr. Haynes is old-school, no frills, kind of practice, but he is honest. Never had any problems with the front office, unlike some of the reviews. They even discounted my balance after my insurance downgraded my coverage. read more

I spent a year trying to get Dr Haynes to exams access I had in front on tooth #14. It's the second molar upper left. In October a bitewing X-ray was taken but Dr Haynes said"I don't see anything". Two dentists have said Dr Haynes should have taken another x-ray and would have seen the tooth was dying and I was suffering significant bone loss. I suffered through the holiday and February 2026 i insisted on seeing him but was persuaded to wait for my next biannual cleaning. In March 2026 After I insisted on another x-ray Haynes handed me the card of an endodontist and said " your tooth is dying". I'm facing implant surgery. read more

A dental assistant at this practice dropped a heavy dental instrument on my face while I was getting 2 fillings. It got worse from there. The dentist doing my fillings, Dr. Anita Purohit, told me that nothing was broken and asked if I was okay. I let her know I was, even though I was in some pain. She finished the fillings. My bite needed some adjustment, which she did, then assured me I could come back in and have it touched up if needed. I had just had a bad experience, so I was quick to get out of the office. Unfortunately, the more I felt the filling, the more I realized a lot more was wrong than my bite. A filling is supposed to be flush with your tooth. These fillings were not flush at all, bigger than my tooth on the sides and uncomfortable. Worse, when I flossed, I had an overhang between the teeth (look up "dental overhang" if you aren't sure what this is, but it is not an ideal outcome for a filling and many dentists would re-do the filling after discovering they had created one). I was frustrated, because Dr. Purohit had done a very sloppy job. The next day I wrote an email detailing everything that happened and my concerns about the filling. I received a voicemail (VM) from the office manager, asking what I wanted to happen. So I emailed again, saying these needed to be fixed or I needed a refund to myself and my insurance for the fillings. I received another VM, letting me know I needed to call, an appointment can't be made over email. So I called, but let the office manager know I was recording the call. She was incredibly defensive and argumentative. I still have that call saved because it was so aggressive and inappropriate on her side. I did finally tell her that she wasn't being helpful, and can she make the appointment for me to see Dr. Haynes. I didn't want Dr. Purohit to do it. I don't trust her work, and she isn't listed (as of the posting of this yelp review) on the website as a dentist at this office, which seems sketchy. They made me an appointment to see Dr. Haynes. Dr. Haynes is nice. He fixed the bite and shaved down the filling material on the cheek side of my fillings so they were flush with my teeth. When I asked him about the overhang, he told me I could just change how I floss my teeth, so the floss doesn't get shredded. Again, not an ideal solution, I care about my teeth and overhangs are perfect places for plaque to build up. It will probably have to be redone soon. But, he had fixed one side of the fillings, so it was better than it had been. I asked if the tongue side of the fillings could be improved and he said he didn't want to do anymore work on the teeth that day. I called later that day to schedule another appointment. I needed the tongue side of the fillings flush with my teeth. The office manager called me and I told her that I needed the fillings adjusted and I still had an overhang. She didn't understand what I meant by "overhang", but made the appointment. This entire time I have been made to feel bad and wrong for trying to fix what was not great work. I went to the appointment and Dr. Haynes did grind down the lingual side until it was smooth with the tooth, but the overhang between the teeth is still there. I asked Dr. Haynes, "Is this a normal outcome for this dental office?" He assured me that it wasn't the normal outcome for a filling at this location. He agreed that maybe Dr. Purohit was flustered after I had a dental instrument dropped on my face, but that he couldn't do all the work, he needed other dentists at the practice. I understood and appreciated him acknowledging that this wasn't an ideal outcome. No offer of a refund, but at least acknowledgement of less than great work. I was then fitted for a night guard. When checking out at the front desk, they told me it would be done Monday. Monday comes and I can't get to the office, so I go Tuesday morning. I'm informed that my appointment was for Monday morning, but they can still fit me in. I thought I was just picking it up. If I had an appointment, did they send me an email confirmation? "No, because we talked about it Thursday and then we were closed on Friday." When I checked out after the fitting, they told me it looked like my co-pay was 60%, so I needed to pay $75 for the night guard, which is way too much for a night guard. If I could talk to Dr. Haynes whenever I had a problem, I wouldn't be leaving the practice, but I have to go through the front office to get to him and I refuse to talk to disrespectful and inept staff anymore. This ordeal is partially my fault. I should have recognized the red flags and left the practice before I had an issue. This is your red flag. If you can get an appointment specifically with Dr Santos for cleanings and Dr. Haynes for fillings, you might not have any real issues. Don't settle for someone not listed on the website. If something does go wrong, the front office staff will blame you and make it incredibly difficult and frustrating to fix the issue. read more

Great dental practice! I found Dr. Haynes' office when I moved to the neighborhood nine years ago and I have liked my care there so much that I have kept going back even when I moved to a different location in the Bay. I primarily see Dr. Zeuss, who is very knowledgable and caring. She explains the purpose of each procedure and allows patients to take breaks if they are in any way uncomfortable. I have never visited a dental practice where the dentist cleans my teeth, so whenever I go for a preventative visit I feel like the cleaning has been very thorough. The front desk staff is very friendly, which is a nice bonus. I can't speak to the other dentists, as I have not really interacted with them, but I highly recommend Dr. Zeuss to friends and family who are seeking good dental care in the east bay, particularly to people who are nervous around dentists. read more

Dr. Zuess has decent bedside manner but holy moly not only are they out for your money, they have no regard for the health of your teeth. I had some mild staining on a molar - nothing major and dr. Zuess took one look and declared I had a cavity and would need a filling, without even offering an x ray to confirm before drilling. She also pushed braces that I definitely don't need. My gut told me my teeth were fine so I opted for a cleaning and said I'd come back after a second opinion. The stain was still there so I sought out another dentist to confirm before they drilled into my teeth and surprise surprise the new dentist did a full x ray on my mouth and found zero cavities! No need to drill and after the cleaning with my new dentist (who is amazing, does her due diligence and is very honest) the stain was gone! I don't want to accuse them of malice here but if dr. Zuess had done a proper cleaning and x rays the staining would have been resolved. They nearly ruined my teeth! Very disappointed, save your teeth and avoid this practice at all costs. read more

Today was the third time I used this offices' services for a dental cleaning. The first time it went OK, the second time I had an old lady taking care of it and I didn't like it, as she only used the ultrasound water scaler (you know the one... fjiiiiiiiiiiiiii). We talked about how much I dislike and how painful it can be for me. She went ahead and used it for the whole cleaning anyway. I felt discomfort and pain several times but I sucked it up this time. Today I came back because they have several dentists so it could be that someone else was taking care of me. Nope. The same old lady came and did the exact same thing. It got to the point that even after complaining several times she kept going the same way, so I had to tell her to stop. Then it got bizarre. She only said "Ok", took a piece of paper and left me in the room. I was expecting maybe an explanation of what they saw in the x-rays they took at the beginning (I think I didn't need them but I had new insurance so they can probably charge it), or what they learnt during the examination they did at the beginning where they check for the gums' health (2 2 3, 4 4 4...). Nothing. No mouth rinse. either She just left. When I realized that was it I went to the front office where the dentist was talking to one of the administration ladies and left without saying a word. I may have offended her for not liking her ways. I was offered to see another dentist but I was warned that pretty much they all use the water scaler during all the procedure, so if you dislike (and feel pain as I do) with that thing.... you better find another place to go. read more

Then when I called back proceeded to argue with me about not being able to hear me yet she was responding to everything I was saying. Scheduling appointments with this place is ridiculous. They keep telling me about my appointments for my crown. I didn't make to one appointment and so my last appointment I am thinking I am getting it done. After they took my X-rays. The dentist asked me when did I want to come in for it. I said I thought it was today. He said they missed up the appointment and put me down for only 30. Instead of calling me that they changed it. The lady that handles the financial and scheduling has a bad attitude and was very disrespectful to me. She was talking to me like I was a kid. I snapped at her because she was unprofessional. I've been going to Dr. Haynes for 25+ years and it feels like going to see family. The practice is intimate enough to feel like staff can get to know you. Dr. Haynes is highly professional, competent, knowledgeable, and caring. While conversation with your dentist DURING one's procedure is limited, Dr. Haynes exhibits caring as (over the years) he's gotten to know me, my family, and most importantly my teeth! Staff is friendly, and competent as well. The addition of dental hygienist Jackie is a real plus to this already wonderful dental practice. This review is for Dr. Haynes' office and Harrita. Absolutely terrible experience. I missed an appointment because I had moved across the country, and forgotten (in the midst of the hundreds of things I needed to do) to update my mailing address with my Dentist - as if I would ever be going to a dentist across the country. They must have tried calling, and I never confirmed the appointment. Somehow, 7 months after I had moved cross country, I get a phone call and an email stating that I am the office $50, and that if I don't pay it within 10 days, they are going to send it to collections. I never received a phone call before then, no email - nothing. But they threatened me for collections for a missed appointment. Apparently, Harrita was brought into the office specifically to go after Collections. I guess it must be pretty common that they schedule appointments for people without the patients asking for them (they just give you a card at the end of your appointment on your way out, which just has a date 6 months from the day of your current appointment), and then if you forget about it they charge you. And I guess this must have happened to a lot of people since they brought someone in the office specifically to do collections. What a disgrace for a dentist's office to have to resort to this. When I tried bringing up my situation to them, their answer was: "it's just $50, just pay it. I'm doing you a courtesy by not sending this to collections". Something tells me that with this attitude and business model they won't stay in business too much longer. A disgrace: worst business I have ever interacted with, and I have never left a negative review for anyone. I always try to support Black own businesses. Now I'm pissed with the billing departmen. The billing person no longer works at the office. So, the front desk staff is assisting. I clearly asked the staff not to perform any services on me that's not covered by my insurance to avoid a bill. The desk staff confirmed they remember me making the statement. However, I still received a bill. What the heck. I called and I was told the insurance told them the cleaning was covered but when they submitted the claim they didn't pay the entire amount. I suggested they fight for the patient ask the correct questions and match codes. The staff put the blame on me. I called the insurance company and they over charged me. Yes! The insurance company called the office and they decreased my bill. Oh! The staff mentioned oh we didn't charge her for the Oct bill of last year for $10. Omg! The insurance guy sikply said unnnhun. His customer have no problem paying what is due she simply would like to pay the correct amount. Omg! I want to take them to small claims court. I know what it takes to go to school for years and to have unprofessional staff be the root of bad reports hurts my soul. I understand we all need jobs. But, the staff is a job. I suggest they get a new billing person to audit the books. Send apology letters out and offer one free cleaning. I'm floored. I haven't been this upset in a very long time. I'm going to await a new bill before paying them. Just because they made me angry. How do you scam an investigator? Still heated. This office is an in-house network with my medical benefits. Dr Haynes is the most mindful and gentle dentist I have ever had. I have been seeing him for at least 7 years if not longer. He also doesn't push expensive treatment, he is very fair and his prices are lower than any other previous dentist I have been to. So, I scheduled my annual check-up. Marla was the one who greeted me at the front desk. She was very nice. Although it is a small location, they definitely socially distance patients in the siting room, and provide clean pens to fill-out paperwork. Dr.Zeuss cleaned my teeth, talked me through the procedure, and was very gentle in my sensitive areas. At the end of my visit, I got a referral and was given a goodie bag! I'm so happy I found this office and have recommended my partner to get his dental work done here as well. I've been going to Dr. Haynes for over 10 years and still go to him despite moving to SF two years ago. It's worth crossing the bridge! He's very reasonable, not recommending more work than you need done (I've definitely had that experience with previous dentists). The best part is how well he gives those numbing injections that can be painful. They aren't with Dr. Haynes-he manages to be very patient and take his time injecting the dose, which means you barely feel it. No pinch or anything. I've never had that anywhere else. Looks like the people who have given this place one-star reviews are the kind of people who expect busy front office receptionists to give you a Swedish massage through the telephone and/or expect dental hygienists to engage in witty, thought-provoking, getting-to-know-you-first-date-conversations WHILE YOUR TEETH ARE BEING CLEANED so you can't even respond. This is a dental office, not a Lambo dealership. No one is required to cater to you because you have fugly teeth and need help. In a nutshell, these whiny one-star reviews are unwarranted reviews from (probably) histrionic narcissists, Yelp's main demographic. Dr. Haynes was my childhood dentist, and most of the people who work with him have been with him for years; I'm old as hell, so we're talking at least two decades. Folks, no one works together for that long AND stays in business for over two decades if the whole team isn't anything less than excellent. Need specifics? When I was in high school at Carondelet, I had to shadow a healthcare professional and write up a report about my experience for my Anatomy & Physiology class (with Ms. Gilbert, for any Cougar alums out there). I worked up the courage to ask Dr. Haynes, and he let me shadow him during a regular work day. One of the best ways to learn about something is through observation, and I'll never forget how cool that day was. He was - and still - is incredibly caring, and you can tell he really enjoys what he does for a living. Can you say the same for yourself, all you one-star reviewers? Probably not. I've moved across the country quite a bit so I've had to see different dentists over the years, but the fact still stands - Dr. Haynes is by far one of the best dentists out there, and I will be seeing him for as long as I'm in the Bay Area. Ive had many different insurances and been to more than 20 different dentists in my life, this is the second worst, the worst was when a dentist injected some unknown liquid in my mouth and it swell up. Dr.haynes is curt and arrogant, doesnt listen to his patients. All he does is keep ranting how he is from portland and california is getting so expensive. I switched to this office during covid after my previous dentist office went completely insane (see my reviews). The dentist I was assigned to is Amani. He's been super nice, informative, patient, and generally easy to get along with. Beyond being a pleasure to talk to, he handles all of the dental work with care. I had a wonderful visit both times I have been here, from the women who checked me in at the front desk, to the woman who took such thorough exrays, and, of course the dentists. Unfortunately, I don't remember the name of the dentist I saw at my first visit, an emergency visit to fix a broken crown, but he was great!!! So thorough, explained everything to me, and told me new information about how medication I was taking impacted my dental health. The second visit was with Dr. Haynes, who I loved!!! He was also thorough, informative, and I have total confidence that he is taking every precaution to be as safe as possible in these uncertain times (he has family access to an entomologist ). After moving to the Bay Area from Montreal, I was on the hunt for a good dentist who was accepted by my Anthem Tonik dental plan. Cross referencing the list of who I could see and who rated well on Yelp I landed on Dr. Haynes (the only dentist who had atleast 3 stars). Yes, his office isn't the most modern, but consider this: 1. Dr Haynes does the cleanings himself rather than contracting it out to another hygenist etc.. This is a dentist who works "in the trenches". 2. Yes, you may have to wait briefly since it's him running the show, but given how much time he's spending peering into your mouth, you likely get a better assessment of what's going on with your teeth and any issues that need to be resolved. ...Or you can go to a dentist who will see you for maybe 5 minutes at each cleaning. Parking was easy, very friendly staff, easy to get appointments and they mail out reminder cards. I think the merits of Dr. Haynes and his dental office are clear and would recommend him if you are searching for a dentist. A brief ending note: they have binders full of all of their insurance information at the front desk. You could probably just call the office directly and let them know what plan you have to find out if he's covered rather than digging through and searching your website. read more

He does the cleanings himself, and is very patient, thorough, and honest. Highly recommended! I've also had a root canal done here (from an oral surgeon he referred), as well as gotten their whitening trays, which have worked well and are very easy/non-intrusive to use. It is also a few blocks from work so it is very convenient for me to come in. They are generally very fast and I never feel like I'm being sold on anything.
