I have known Dr. Willie Woo and Bonnie (front desk) for over 30 years and I can tell you, I've never met a nicer staff. Then his son Michael joined and Lety (front desk), and Donya (dental assistant) to enhance the feeling of family when I go into their office. As a dental hygienist myself, I am aware of the challenges, importance of teamwork, responsibilities, high quality care provided, professionalism, as well as having the ability of making people feel comfortable in the field of dentistry. I can't say enough good things about this office. My husband and I have been patients of Dr. Mike for many years. Both of our sons, (ages 11 and 13), now see him too. Everyone there is friendly and kind, and provide excellent care. My 11-year-old recently had a toothache and what looked like a large cavity. He was leaving very early the next morning for sleep-away camp for 3 weeks and I felt like he should be looked at, but had no idea if he could be seen on a Saturday. I called the emergency number provided on the office voicemail. Dr. Willie Woo called me back right away. He asked me to send a picture of my son's tooth and then said we should meet him in the office. He ended up needing to extract his tooth. Had it not been pulled, it could have abscessed and been disastrous at camp. He called us later that afternoon to see how our son was doing (he's doing fine!). I first came to this office a few years ago with a horrible toothache. Even though I was a new patient, they were able to work me into their busy schedule. Having pretty severe dental anxiety, Dr. Michael Woo and his staff eased my nerves immediately with their pleasant demeanor. Dr. Woo explained to me that I had an infection and that I would need a root canal. You wouldn't think that a root canal could be painless, but that was exactly my experience that day. Dr. Woo was able to save my tooth and get me out of pain. I have been going for regular cleanings since then, and they truly make their patients feel like family. It took a long time to find a dentist I trust in the Bay Area. I've lived in Oakland and SF for 10 years. The first time I found a dentist was after college and the dentist I found scared me into a bunch of unnecessary procedures that my brother's girlfriend (a dentist back home) confirmed were not needed. As an art student at CCA I found Willie's Piedmont Ave office in 1980. By now, I calculated that Willie has seen me more than a 100 times for cleanings and fillings and a couple crowns. Willie's friendly nature and honest dentistry And now, beginning in 2009, my teeth are being looked after and cleaned by Willie's well educated and gentle mannered son, Michael. I was really impressed how Michael gave me a pain-free teeth cleaning and gave me a consultation on things he saw happening in my mouth. He suggested I switch to an electric tooth brush to better manage areas that are hard to reach. The new Webster St. office is bright and cheerful and spacious. Stacy and Bonny are both so nice. Bonny calls me the day before to remind me of my appointment and, when, on rare occasion I need to reschedule or I'm late to an appointment they always accommodate me with a friendly smile as well as offer fair pricing. Stacy is as bright and cheerful as a dental assistant as they come. Willie has created a strong practice with a professional yet family feel. I just called Dr Woo's office based on the Yelp reviews. What a surprise there! I reached out looking to find a dentist in my network. In my opinion, Yelp is a customer service site, and I have to give these guys 5 stars because of their receptionist Stacy. I called in simply to see if they were in network. They were not, but she followed through with me and found out some of my plan information for me and properly presented how they would compare to an in-network dental provider. I appreciated this information very much, and did end up opting to try to find someone in my network. After that, she gave me one last piece of advice to call my provider on the back of my card to find one of the preferred dentists in my network. Since I know nothing about this process, I found this to be helpful and attentive on her part. Kudos to Stacy! read more

He referred to the details of my case, apologized multiple times for my not being completely happy with my treatment, and offered to make another appointment that he would not charge for if I was not happy. ORIGINAL REVIEW: I went to Dr Willie Woo for an annual teeth cleaning and did not have insurance so I was paying out of pocket. While the entire experience was extremely friendly and positive from the office staff to the doctor, it was also very fast, and my past cleanings have taken much longer, primarily because other dentists have recommended deep cleaning. I have a lot of issues-- receding gum lines, deep pockets, requiring deep cleaning-- and Dr Woo didn't make the same recommendation for deep cleaning that I've gotten from other dentists. read more

Take a good look because this is what a 5-star dental office looks like! Thanks to Yelpers, I gave Dr. Woo's office a call out of desperation. I had a cracked filling that my SF dentist at the time told me to have fixed ASAP but his office couldn't find an open time for me until two months later. Yes - really. Dr. Woo's office got me in the next day. It was a 3pm appointment, which in the medical world means the dentist is running is late and expect to wait. I was settling in with a People magazine when they called me back 5 minutes BEFORE my appointment. There are two Dr. Woos - father and son. I saw the former, Dr. Willie Woo. The assistant quickly took an x-ray. As she was bringing it up on the screen, in swept Dr. Woo. He has a terrific bed side manner and put me right at ease. He confirmed the crack was deep and applied extra novacaine per my request. My tooth was fixed within 20 minutes. Since that first visit, I have returned for a 6-month cleaning and an annual dental check/cleaning. Everything about this practice is spot on. From the receptionist who never puts you on hold to the assistants who keep things running on time and, of course, Dr. Woo who really cares about his patients and remembers personal details of your life six months later. read more

Dr. Woo is a Godsend! I found Dr. Woo on Yelp and the rating and reviews seemed exemplary - so I decided to give him a try. I needed some emergency attention after visiting another local Dentist in Oakland while out on business - and it just couldn't wait for my return to Boston for correction. My gums were bleeding profusely now, and it looked like a tooth was chipped, from Dental work received by a local Dentist we will refer to as "Dr. Giggles"- at his Office on Grand Ave. I told Dr. Woo that I simply wanted a cleaning, however now it looks like I was in over my head from the butcher job done at the other establishment. The inside of my mouth looked like a crime scene! When I opened my mouth, Dr. Woo...gasped....but remained composed. I told him that I wanted to complete any heavy dental work back home, and perhaps there could be some temporary fix, to stop the pain. Apparently the bruising and abrasions will heal, and there is nothing to worry about - no further dental work necessary. He was able to do an excellent job working on my gums and teeth, including the basic cleaning. I was relieved to get the service that I was in need of, especially after my initial problem with Dr. Giggles. Dr. Woo did a great job and came through for me big time! read more

Have you ever had a dentist ask you a question during a cleaning, and then pause the cleaning so you can actually answer him? Dr. Mike actually cares to hear what you have to say, and doesn't make you feel like an idiot drooling all over the place trying to answer him. I had honestly given up on finding a dentist that I actually want to stick with. I'd been with a dentist that always felt like going to a mcdonalds: never see the same hygenist twice, always a different dentist, and always feeling like you're being sold something. When I had something actually go wrong (a tooth chip), I no longer felt like I could trust them and had to seek alternative care. Enter Dr. Mike: He were able to get me in really fast (compared to my expectations), and gave me an honest, unbiased and really trustworthy assessment of my treatment options. Booked an appointment for cleaning/exam only. When I arrived they tried pressuring me into getting xrays and also during the exam ONE filling was identified (which wasn't really needed in the first place). When I went to checkout, magically the number of fillings had increased to "about 2". This place is predatory and does not have consumers' best interests in mind. The cleaning was also very poorly done and I now will need to get another one likely in a few months. I will definitely not return. read more

What a great dentist. His practice is very friendly, just like being with your BFF. When I moved from California, I would fly back twice a year for dental checkups. I've been coming to Willie Woo, DDS for probably over 10 years now. I honestly go into panic everytime I'm due for a cleaning, and curse at myself for not flossing daily for the past 6 months, knowing that I'll get a scolding from one of the Dr. Woos, however post-cleaning, I always think to myself..."now that wasn't so bad. My teeth actually feel Amazing (notice the capital A)!" Bonnie, the receptionist/office manager does an exceptional job hunting me down when I'm due for a cleaning. I know I'm in trouble when my iPhone caller ID lights up with "Dr. Woo," caught red handed for avoiding an appointment. But in all honesty, Bonnie is great at getting me scheduled for my next appointment no matter how much I try to dodge it. She is also professional, kind, and always greets me with a warm welcome. I've been seeing Michael more often recently, and he does an excellent job with my cleanings. He is quick, and I'm usually done within 15 minutes. As others have mentioned, Michael is gentle (well as gentle as a dentist can be) and makes you feel comfortable and relaxed while in the hot seat. The office is clean and bright, and has gorgeous (and relaxing) views of the Bay. There is usually some kind of light-rock, adult-contemporary music on in the background, all of which really help soothe my dentist-visiting anxiety. After an experience at another dentist who was very pushy with major procedures like deep cleaning and sealants (expensive stuff!!!) Dr. Mike Woo is a dental genius. I've seen him for checkups for a few years now, and can't recommend him highly enough. His professional demeanor and calm presence makes the (normally harrowing) experience of cleanings and fillings an actual pleasure! But it is his attention to detail and precision in more severe dental matters that makes me want to give him at least 20 stars. To illustrate: last weekend, at the apex of a Sunday-funday pool party, I dove into a swimming pool that proved to be too shallow. BAM, half of my right front tooth cracked right off. Noooo! After my initial freak-out, I called Dr. Woo. I had to live as a toothless hillbilly for less than 24 hours before he was able to see me for my emergency. At the office, Bonnie, the receptionist, greeted me with great compassion. After some debate with his lovely assistant as to whether a gold front grill with a platinum playboy bunny would be a good move, I let Mike take the reins. Without any pain or judgement, he swiftly crafted a new tooth for me, like magic. It' incredible- it looks like my old smile! I went to see Dr. Woo on the recommendation from a friend and from reading all the positive Yelp reviews. Thinking that I was in good hands, I had a full exam and cleaning done by the younger Dr. Woo who seemed pleasant. I have pretty good teeth; however, when we reviewed my dental xrays, he told me that I had 2 precavities that he thought I needed to fill, and suggested I schedule my next appointment. When I came back a week later, I was quickly whisked into the dental chair and without any formal explanation, the younger Dr. Woo went ahead and started drilling into my teeth. Again, thinking that I was in good hands and that he knew what to do, I expected to be done fairly quickly for 2 filings, but I found myself sitting in the chair for almost an hour. By the time he was done, I thought something didn't seem right. When I went back to the receptionist, I was shocked to see a large bill that was way over what I was expecting for 2 fillings. Asking for further clarification, I was told that I had 5 fillings done, all necessary by Dr. Woo's judgment. I left the office feeling mislead by Dr. Woo for not fully explaining what I needed done and instead just rushing through to bill me for extensive procedures. I don't question Dr. Woo's professional opinion, but I found it unprofessional to treat patients in this manner without informing them of the procedures to be performed and expenses to be incurred. In the subsequent days, I had some major discomfort in the filled teeth with one filling even falling out and had to return to the office again to be seen again, this time by the older Dr. Woo. From my experience, I will not be going back to see Dr. Woo and I would not recommend anyone else to see him either. Perhaps it was because I was a new patient, but I find it perplexing that there are so many positive reviews for this dentist who seems to only care for billing as many procedures as he can, necessary or not. read more

This is the best experience with a dentist I've had in my life. I cracked a tooth which was already in bad shape a few days ago. My normal dentist couldn't see me for another two weeks, and was not helpful at all in trying to get me in sooner. I searched Yelp for a solution, and stumbled upon Willie Woo and Michael Woo's facility. Even when I called several times inquiring about availability and asking a lot of questions about insurance over the phone, Stacy and Bonnie (not sure of spelling) were wonderfully patient and informative. They did everything they could to see me on the very next day. They informed me that my insurance would not cover this visit. Because it was an emergency, and I read good things, I decided to go in anyway. They were just as kind and charming in person. Wonderful people! Today I went in to see what could be done. After about an hour there, I walked out with a temporary filling (until my new insurance kicks in, then I'll get the crown) and a huge smile on my face. Dr. Willie Woo was immediately welcoming, kind, and had a calming effect that just seemed very warming. He asked about my life, before even getting into the logistics of what would be done/the cost of the procedures. Not in a "small-talky" way either. He sincerely wanted to know me. When it got down to the drilling, he was very understanding. Though I tried my best to hide it, he could tell that I was nervous and anxious about the dreaded screeching drill. He made sure I was good and numbed up. When ever he struck a spot and I flinched, he asked if I was ok. I always said "yes" but several times I wasn't, and he knew, and gave me more numbing magic, until I genuinely couldn't feel anything. He clearly explained everything as he was doing it. His assistant was also very attentive and sympathetic to what was going on with me. Dr. Willie Woo is an exceptionally compassionate and generous person, and his office is staffed with people who match that demeanor. My insurance is out of network from their office. Despite that, I will STILL insist on only going to this dentist from now on. I don't care what it takes. That's the power of high-level hospitality. (Did I mention my career is in hospitality management?) I could not possibly have imagined receiving this level of kindness and delicate care at a dentist's office. Fastest drill in the West! I had not been to the dentist in a LONG time when I went to see Dr. Woo. I was absolutely convinced my teeth were rotting away. He could have taken advantage and said I needed more work than I did and I would have totally bought it. But he didn't. Two fillings to repair. And no up-selling. On top of that, full xrays and cleaning 30 minutes! Next visit, two fillings replaced 30 minutes! No pain after and the best alignment to other teeth I have ever had with a new filling. Recently, during dinner I fractured a back tooth. I called my dentist Dr. Michael Woo the next day. Bonnie, the receptionist was very accommodating and he was able to see me that morning. I was afraid I would lose the tooth because the crack was substantial. Dr. Michael Woo examined the tooth and the xray and assured me that he would be able to save the tooth. I have been to different dentists in the past, and I have found some dentists would rather remove a tooth and place a bridge or implant rather than try to save the tooth. Dr. Mike explained the different options and we decided to save the tooth. He prepared the tooth for a crown that day and the next week, my crown was placed and it looks better than the original tooth! He was very gently and the procedure was totally pain free. Bonnie went over all the costs associated with the procedures and gave me an estimate of what the insurance was expected to cover. The estimate turned out to be exactly correct. This office is unlike any other dental office I have been to. It is truly a family atmosphere. Mike works with his father, Willie. Bonnie and Stacy, the assistant, are long time employees and are very friendly and welcoming. The whole staff called me by my name and I was treated like a person rather than a chart. Dr. Woo was referred to me by my boss's wife, and I am so glad I found him. I have dealt with a lot of LAME dentists. Total rip-off artists. So, this was a huge breath of fresh air. I had a really painful tooth, and with a digital x-ray he found a deep cavity in the tooth that had almost reached the nerve (which would mean root canal!). He got me in the next morning for a filling, and was able to drill right up next to the nerve and fill the tooth with medication and insulation to calm the nerve down. So far, the tooth hardly hurts at all. He saved my tooth! He was so gentle and nice (I hardly even felt the novocaine shot), his office is immaculately clean, and his staff is so friendly and professional. I am a fan and I think I just found myself a new dentist. It's like finding an honest car mechanic. I'm so happy. read more
