This periodontist was recommended by my regular dentist, and I am so happy to have been introduced to him and his staff. Located in a nice neighborhood in Berkeley and easy to get to from where I live. I've had nothing but top-notch people helping me with my dental work and making sure that I move forward with all the information I need to keep my teeth in the best shape ever. It's never easy going to the debt is for most people, but I would say that with this small but comfortable waiting ring and a charming staff of professionals and the way that I was made to feel like a long time regular customer I can't do anything but rate them high enough. I highly recommend this doctor as he is a person that knows what he can do to serve your needs best. I broke my front tooth, and my dentist referred me to Dr. Chertok for an implant. The care I received was excellent: everything was explained to me, the surgery was scheduled very fast, and the procedure itself was as smooth as it could possibly be (I was really afraid of it and was pleasantly surprised about how painless it was). The office staff is quick to give you advice on insurance payment policies, but then didn't take responsibility for that advice when it turned out to not be true. I was advised that for my post treatment cleaning, I could go to my regular dentist or their office and that since my regular dentist was going out of network under Delta Dental, it would be cheaper to go to them for the cleaning instead since they are in network. Turns out they submitted my cleaning as periodontal work and not just a cleaning, which was not clarified and a way for some offices to get more money from insurance companies. I was less than a dollar away from my max for periodontal work, so the cleaning was essentially not covered at all. I did all my periodontal work at Dr Chertok's office, and they submitted that work to Delta Dental, so they knew about the max. When I contacted them about what had happened, I got a very rude response from the office staff that basically said that it wasn't their responsibility to know my insurance policy. This is a pretty standard, heartless response from the medical community. I then persisted. Someone else looked into it and then replied with an apology about miscommunications and an offer to give me a payment plan, which is completely useless because I could have just gone to my dentist for less. I want absolutely nothing to do with such an untrustworthy business. read more

Had to fight with them for a year or two to figure out why i wasn't initially covered, but it turned out it was their fault for not reporting the cleaning to my insurance company. I went in for a standard root cleaning--while the service itself was really good, Dr. Keith Chertok's office staff couldn't figure out how to submit the claim to my insurance company, so, instead, they sent me a $1k+ bill for a service that should have been covered by my insurance. I pushed on both his office staff and my insurance company, which claimed that his staff didn't submit enough information proving that I needed a root cleaning (I haven't had any sort of teeth cleaning in about a decade so obviously I needed one). Dr Keith Chertok is a great periodontal doctor, but his office staff is incompetent or he's attempting some insurance fraud here. Recommending avoiding at all costs--literally! Edit: I've been in touch with his staff, trying to resolve the insurance issue. They have been very supportive. Increasing my review from 1 to 4 stars. My dentist referred me to Dr. Chertok for a consultation (I had one tooth where the gum was receding pretty far). I went in with the mindset that I absolutely was not going to get a gum graft - they seem really painful and expensive. Upon arrival I found the receptionist pleasant and helpful. I explained that my insurance is a little strange. She said that she was more than happy to call my insurance during my meeting with Dr. Chertok. During my meeting with Dr. Chertok, I was pleasantly surprised that he was not trying to push me into any decision. His demeanor is calm, quiet, and knowledgeable. He discussed ALL of my options with me (including services that he does not provide as well as doing nothing). After some thought I decided to proceed with getting a gum graft. He was very thorough and explained all of the details so that I would get a realistic picture of what to expect (procedure, pain, healing, results). When I go back for my procedure and his assistant were kind and gentle. They made sure that I was comfortable and let me know when I could turn on my iPod and tune out the procedure. I was given contact numbers for him so that I would be able to call if I had any questions or concerns. The next day he texted me to make sure that I was feeling okay - on a holiday weekend no less! Everything healed without any complications and minimal pain/swelling/bruising (the worst part was not being able to eat crunchy foods). I followed the instructions and the results are better than I had expected! I felt that Dr. Chertok and his staff were kind and went above and beyond my expectations to make sure that I was comfortable with everything - physically, mentally, and financially. I am so happy that I decided to get the work done. I was referred to Dr. Chertok for periodontics consult and treatment by my regular dentist. I was happy that I was referred to a location so close to home! It is a solo practice with a couple (maybe 3) dental hygienist. I found Dr. Chertok to be mild mannered, soft spoken, and professional. However, I found his office staff (receptionist, scheduler, etc.) to be completely unprofessional. They talk amongst themselves really loudly and chit chat as if they are in their own living room. It's kind of personal conversation (not confidential, just personal everyday stuff) that you do not expect in any business setting. Dr. Chertok seems to be used to it although he doesn't seem to participate. I was put off by the office staff enough (3 visits ) to ask my regular dentist to find me another periodontist. Dr. Chertok's manner was always professional and I felt safe - I was in good hands. We had some schedule confusion about a Thursday 7:30am follow-up appointment a few weeks ago. I waited outside before calling at 7:40 and heard on the recording they closed the office Thursday and Friday for Rosh Hashanah. It turns out they had tried to call me, but my phone was temporarily not working due to a change in my job. I was disappointed they did not follow up to make sure I knew they cancelled my appointment - they could have called my wife or sent me an email. But I understand how these things can happen. Keith and his staff were very apologetic and eager to make things right. We all make mistakes - and these guys handled this one with grace. Really kind and talented people. Dr. Chertok saved my gums!! I am only 22 but my dentist noticed my receeding gums when I was 19. I always took great care of my teeth but due to genetics and a few other factors I have the bad luck of having thin gums. Fortunately I was refered to Dr. Chertok. Upon first meeting with him he checked out my situation and walked me through what he can do about it. He told me exactly what the gum graft proceedure is and showed me virtually what occurs. I also really like that unlike most other gum graft surgeons, he takes the tissue from inside the roof of the mouth which looks more natural when it is placed over the exposed root of the tooth and allows the roof of your mouth to heal faster. Additionally, he not only can thicken the gums but he increase the gum line where it has receeded so your gums will end up looking normal and healthy. Thus far Dr. Chertok has done 3 gum grafts for me over the course of 3 years and they all look spectacular. I never had any issues during or after the proceedure, and if I did I could always call or text and ask about it. Dr. Chertok is honestly one of the nicest people I have ever met. He is extremely professional and he really cares. He even calls you after your proceedures to see how you are feeling and address any concerns you may have. I've been going to Dr. Chertok's office for about 5 years. This last Spring I had to have a double gum graft. Needless to say, this procedure is not what one would call painless. It involves "harvesting" a piece of gum from the roof of the mouth then reattaching it to the area where it's needed. It involves more than a hour of very careful work and requires anesthesia. Dr. Chertok's office prepared me for the surgery by ordering me antibiotics and heavy duty painkillers beforehand, so I was ready to take the first painkiller immediately as recommended. When I got home I took my pill and immediately fell asleep for 10 hours mentally prepared for pain on waking. When I finally woke up, I cautiously felt my jaw. Even though I had just had stitches, I didn't feel any pain except for minor discomfort from the swelling. I continued in this painless state throughout my recuperation! I just followed the post-operative instructions, and when I returned two weeks later for my follow-up appt. my incision was already healed! I also see my regular dentist and hygienist twice year at a different office. Both my dentist and my hygienist commented on separate occasions what nice work he did. Lastly, other reviewers find the office staff too chatty; I find them homey and friendly. I highly recommend Dr. Chertok and his office staff. Really! No pain. This was perhaps the best medical experience I have ever had, from start to finish! I scheduled an appointment quickly and easily. The staff was courteous and friendly; there was virtually no wait to get in to see Dr. Chertok. I had extensive periodontal surgery; there was no pain during or after the operation, which was done quickly and efficiently. During my brief follow-up visit, I had the same good experience. Most amazingly, Dr. Chertok phoned me at home the day after the operation, the following week, and a month later, to find out how I was doing. I have not experienced this kind of caring, compassionate attention from any medical professional in many years. It was overwhelmingly wonderful. I have had other periodonists work on my mouth but NO ONE came close to what Dr. Chertok did for me. His grafting is beautiful! He is always up on the latest and greatest technology and he is a very caring and meticulous Doctor. His staff is very kind and helpful in letting me know what my responsibility is for payment. I would never think to leave without paying for the treatment I received that would be like taking something from Nordstrom's without paying for it but not everyone thinks about it like that. Like the previous reviewer, I, too, was referred to Dr. Chertok. After examining my teeth, he appeared to be mild, knowledgeable, and assured me that I am doing the right thing. I asked him questions and he gave me rather vague answers ~ a red flag. Thereafter, I had my teeth deep cleaned by a rather young and inexperienced lady who left me in a lot of pain ~ many red flags! In the following next appointment, she began preparing me for a molar extraction and boy, she was hurting me so bad that I actually stopped her and inform her to cancel this procedure. I usually am a rather polite person but felt Dr. Chertok may be insensitive or unaware what was happening and how he allowed this lady to do her things on me ~ she even apologize with a few "whoops, sorry!" Boy, I am glad I got out of there ~ a real scary place...! Reminded me how Wilbur Force (Jack Nicholson), a character from a movie, Little Shop of Horror, would have loved this place! read more

I am the patient whom Bernadine (one star review below) referred to - immediately after my first gum graft procedure with Dr. Chertok I was diagnosed with chronic myloid leukemia. This made my recovery somewhat traumatic as my mouth was slow to heal, but it also led me to an oncologist who saved my life (I'm now in full remission). Anyway, Dr. Chertok was always very kind, thoughtful and professional, and was very accessible when I needed him. From what I gather, Bernadine continued to train for a marathon after her surgery, even though she was instructed by the doctor not to exercise until her mouth had healed. I'm sure that compounded any ill effects of the procedure. Swelling and bruising are to be expected any time you get surgery on your mouth or face, of course. I've never had any problems with the admin staff at Dr. Chertok's office. They've always been courteous and helpful, and never unprofessional. I had my (hopefully) last round of gum surgery last Friday and it went well, with very little pain after the procedure. And the most important part of this review: my gums look great! read more

Unfortunately for me I have hereditary chronic periodontal issues that went insane while I was pregnant 10 years ago resulting in needing much perio work including surgery and maintenance ever since. I also had some unfortunate prior dental care trauma and was very upset in a freak out kind of way over dental stuff. I think Dr Chertok's office might be slowly allowing my dental PTSD symptoms to abate due to their kindness, consistency and patience over the last 10 years. They have always been patient, never made me feel bad for needing extra gentle care, and always been calm and quiet and encouraging. You could not find a more gentle mild mannered guy than Dr Chertok himself and every 3 months my hygienist deals with my cleaning as gently as she can, with several adaptations I need so I don't gag, freak out, or hyperventilate. I had the best possible experience with Dr. Chertok and his staff. I had to undergo significant and extensive gum surgery and chose to undergo the LANAP procedure. I have a lot of anxiety when it comes to dental procedures. Needless to say I was very nervous, but Dr. Chertok's entire staff made me feel reassured. I was even offered a blanket by his lovely dental assistant to keep warm during the procedure, and I slept through the whole thing with my headphones! Everything went smoothly with minimal discomfort. I only had to take a few ibuprofen for discomfort over the next couple of days and ice for a couple of hours after. I was impressed by the whole process and staff. The procedure is so worth it when compared to painful traditional gum grafting surgery.
