The front office staff were very helpful in explaining what was covered by my insurance, and what were my out of pocket costs. I had an implant done by Dr.Moody a few years ago and she was absolutely wonderful. She has an incredibly gentle touch and her energy was comforting when I was obviously nervous and upset about losing my broken tooth. She really made sure that I was pain free and comfortable the whole time. Her assistant was terrific, too. On top of that, the folks in the front office were very organized and helpful. I had an Osseo Surgery #UL with Dr Meetu Moody February 2024 and she was FANTASIC! I was so impressed by her. She squeezed me in with very short notice, and managed to work on me in between the regularly scheduled patients. I had pretty bad periodontal disease around a crown and two other teeth that I hadn't seen able to get addressed because I had two herniated disks in my neck and other severe neck issues, and had hoped to wait until after my neck surgery because my neck pain was so incredibly bad and I thought being in the dental chair with my mouth wide open would hurt too much. But my gums had gotten really painful and I was afraid I would get an infection in my gums if I didn't address my gums before neck surgery. She agreed they needed to be addressed and managed to squeeze me in right away so that I had the oral surgery at least six weeks before the neck surgery, as required per the neurosurgeon's protocols (to avoid possible infections). It is a long story, but my point here is she went out of her way to help me when I was in a dire situation with my medical issues and upcoming surgery to remove two disks in my neck and replace them with metal hardware (major cervical spine, ACDF fusion surgery) that I couldn't reschedule. She did an amazing job and used pillows to prop me up to make it comfortable, and kept checking in to make sure I wasn't in pain and gave me rest breaks so I could close my jaw as needed. Because of the care she and her staff showed it was not very painful at all on my neck or jaw to have the oral surgery work done. AND the dentist's office said they wouldn't have ever been able to tell I had periodontal disease around those three teeth because she did such a great job with the surgery. I would highly recommend her to other patients!!!! As far as the reception staff it was really hit or miss, some were very patient, and kind and helpful, and some seemed stressed and irritable and overworked (when you first walked in). That part was a bit of a mixed bag. I find in general most front office reception staff (the ones returning phone calls and helping people check in for procedures in most busy medical offices are often stressed and sometimes rude). read more

After dealing with a gum issue and pain that several dentists could not figure out for over a year, I finally met Dr. Moody and not only did she identify the problem, but also skillfully resolved it with the procedure she did. It was especially complicated given that it was one of my front teeth/gums but the healing went beautifully and without any complications! There are plenty of periodontists in the Bay area. Find one that is NOT going to grift you. I have been saving for my gum graft for months now but I still did not have enough. It is $3500 and insurance only covers half. Oh, and by the way. The good doctor will not perform his delicate genius on you unless you cough up the money beforehand. They might even bump up the price. But my actual beef is that I tried to reschedule my appointment 6 days in advance because I simply didn't have the cash up front. The very rude front desk person told me that I will now be billed $187 for cancelling in less than 7 days advance. WHO in their right mind would pay that? It's an arbitrary and exorbitant fee fueled by pure greed and arrogance. Perhaps that 1% doctor is not rich enough yet. I already found a very well qualified doctor who actually doesn't grift people. This is a very overdue review. My experiences with this office were the very worst experiences I have ever had with a medical group, be it dentistry or medicine, in my life. I do not take lightly writing a review this negative but I think people should be forewarned. If it happened to me, it could happen to you. My dentist referred me to Berkeley Periodontics and Dental Implants for an extraction and implant of a tooth. My appointment for the extraction was with Dr. Maharathi. He was cordial and everything went as planned. I did tell him, during my appointment that my dental work could respond with strange side effects because of an auto-immune illness I have. That evening my gum swelled and the pain was throbbing. I took a few aspirins but it didn't calm it, at all. I contacted the after hours line that was on his card at about 9 PM . The after hours service told me he did not have an account with them. I then asked that anyone in the practice contact me as soon as possible. I never received a call back. When I reported this incident to the office, the next day, they handed me off to Dr. Moody and scheduled my appointment with Dr. Moody for my implant appointment. Dr. Moody's appointment seemed fine. She did the work in my mouth but once the implant was in place, she darted out of the office leaving no time for me to ask questions and explain my health situation or get after care instructions from her as to how to care for the implant. The pain came on almost immediately and the swelling was very substantial. It was excruciating. I called the office but they had closed. I phoned the service number and left a message about the debilitating pain in my mouth. Dr. Moody nor anyone else on the team responded. The next morning I phoned the office and left word for her. I told the office what had transpired. Less than an hour later, I received a call back from Dr.Ryan Horn, who I believe is the managing partner in the group. He was very pleasant, he was doing his crisis p.r. damage control, and ordered a pain medication. When I told my family dentist of the experience she was shocked and I can understand that. They have been in business a long time and have a very good reputation. I was perplexed, as well. Was this a one off? I don't know but I would never recommend them to anyone and of course, I would never return. read more

Yelp has really let me down with their highly rated reviewed businesses. I'm pretty sure the doctors are good at what they do, but their receptionist are very very poorly trained with scheduling and following up. At my last cancellation I had requested a list of recommended dentists, since they have been extremely unreliable. She said my doctor is in on Tuesdays and they'll send it then. I never received anything and it's been two+ weeks since my cancellation. Originally the dentist had provided them at my very first appointment (that had scheduling issues too) but they then told me they did offer cleanings with hygienist and not doctors which was fine with me, so I didn't think I needed that list, but apparently I was wrong. read more

I came here to get a second opinion about a tooth that was not doing well due to gum disease... I had a deep cleaning & laser treatment yesterday with Dr Hong and his assistant Katie. Dr Hong spent plenty of time explaining what he thought was best, and the pros and cons of doing the laser treatment given my condition. Dr Hong also answered any questions I had before the appt. I decided to go ahead and do it here, because Dr Hong is an expert at it, and it was going to take half the time than at my other periodontist. I have a huge fear of needles, and I felt very scared of the procedure, but I knew I'd be in great hands. They gave me an anti-anxiety pill beforehand, which helped a lot. Well, I can honestly say Dr Hong is great at giving the anesthesia shots. He went *really* slowly, and it made a huge difference! I can honestly say that Covid shots hurt more. As others have said, he did not rush the numbing process at all, and it was SO helpful. His focus is amazing, he cleaned the crap out of my upper and lower molars :) and I felt total trust in him. So much so that I did my upper molars at the appointment, which I was not planning to do. His assistant Katie is warm and wonderful, and although no-one wants to have periodontal disease or get periodontal treatments, you are in the best of hands if you come here. read more

Dr Moody, Was the absolute best. I needed to get some old implants out and had no Idea where to go. I was referred to Dr Moody's office and I am 100% satisfied with the service I received. It is never fun to deal with these types of things, I was well informed on what to expect, how long it would take and how much pain I would be in. Dr Moody advised me It was best to do it on a Friday, so I had the weekend to recoup, and she was correct on all of it... I was grateful they provided me with the meds so I could just go home and take care of me... Danielle, Dr Moody's assistant gave me clear instructions on how to take the meds and that really helped. I had to reschedule twice, and the staff was very accommodating. I like that they send out multiple reminders for the appointments. Office is clean, and location is great, and I must say the music made the time go by much faster. read more

Dr. Horn is absolutely the best perio dentist I have ever had, a non-trivial statement when you consider I have had scores of perio dentists over my long bout with perio over a period of 4+ decades. In my most recent treatment, Dr. Horn had to remove an implant, insert bone grafting as I had lost too much gum and finally put the new implant in (and a tad longer at that). His approach is a very comfortable one, immediately putting you at ease. But it doesn't end there, he's talking to you about what he is doing as he is doing it with special emphasis, in my case, at how well it is going as I had a tricky situation. What many do not know about Dr. Horn, is that he teaches his profession!!! Anyone who can talk and perform to teach what they do, arguably does it better than all others. Full Stop. A few days ago, now 6+ months since my journey began I came in for the final checkup and the combined effort and care by both of us translated in to a successful treatment plan. Next week I go in to my regular dentist to get the crown. WooHoo!! If you need a perio dentist, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND using Dr. Horn!!! read more

this may seem like a small thing, but I want to say it anyway. in at least one of the exam rooms, on the ceiling, they have newspaper clippings of the comic strips. They tacked into the ceiling, and I always get concerned that during the surgery, one of those tacks might drop out and land in my mouth or eye. I wish they would change that. I also wish the dentist would explain things more before handing you off to the billing and staff people. They do give you a lot of documents to read, and I did read them, but I wish they would explain these verbally a bit more. read more

Everybody in the office was wonderful to deal with. I really did quite like the place, but my biggest complaint was how dirty it was. I have high expectations with these types of places and expect them to be very clean. There was a lot of dirt build up on the floor and in the corners, around the dental chairs and for that reason I will not be returning. They need to hire better cleaners. read more

I met with Ryan Horn and was really impressed with him. He was super thorough, explained what he saw and answered all my questions. Within 2 weeks, I was able to get my graft done and it was a breeze. In all, I think it took less than an hour, was painless and I actually left in great spirits. Dr. Barron Hong was the person that I have mostly dealt with at this business. He and the front office staff merit one star. I came here because I had a tooth that needed to be pulled and replaced with an implant. The price was fairly high and the front office staff offered me no payment plan other than using my credit card. Dr. Hong was supposed to extract my tooth, but because of a personal emergency, Dr. Ryan Horn substituted for him. I suffer from cold injuries, and I communicated my needs around this when he called me to tell me that Dr. Hong couldn't make it. Dr. Horn on his own was fabulous to work with. He and his assistant made sure the office was warm and cozy. He took great care in extracting my tooth and if one can have a pleasant tooth extraction experience, I think this was as close to it as it comes. He even called me the next day to see how I was doing. A few months later Dr. Hong contacted me to schedule the dental implant. I tried to work with his staff on the payments, but was told again that payment was due at the time of service and that I could use my credit card, period. I scheduled the appointment. When I came in, I started immediately having a physical reaction because it was cold in the office Despite the fact that I had preciously communicated this to them, and even called that morning to make sure they were aware, the air conditioner was going full blast. I started going into anaphylactic shock in the office, but no one came out to help me. I got no apology, no nothing, except for a call from Dr. Hong a few weeks later to schedule another appt. for an implant. Again, I was concerned the price quoted me was very high, but there was no negotiating and no offer to compensate me for the wasted time and threat to my medical condition they had caused. UPDATE: Dr. Horn has contacted me and has assured me that my situation is being addressed. We have/are working together to make sure that I can get my periodontal work going forward directly from him. On his own, I would give Dr. Horn five stars. He is the ONLY reason this review isn't one star. read more

My child went to see Dr Hong for a gum issue. The infected area of the gum was removed and a biopsy was done. I thought Dr Hong did a good job with the removal. I really liked his assistant too--she was excellent. My major complaint with Dr Hong is that we had to go back in for a follow up visit to check how the gum healed. He told us we need to be on the lookout for any possible infections such as these in the future and told me to book future appointments with him to check for this. I asked if he looked around my child's mouth for infections he said no and did nothing further. Update on 6/23/20 I received a phone call from Dr. Hong explaining why it wasn't necessary to check the full area of the mouth. Since he already did a full exam months prior, it wasn't necessary to do so again anytime soon. I really respect and appreciate that he took the time to call. read more

I was seen by Dr. Moody some time ago, and while the experience was pleasant enough, I left with more questions and anxiety than I went in on. Dr Moody left me so anxious I wasn't able to sit in a dentist's chair for three years, when an enormous toothache leading to extraction forced me to. She was very clear that whatever it was she was planning to do would be "so traumatic we have to do it in four sessions because one quadrant is all you'll be able to tolerate at one time" but other than a vague "deep cleaning" there was no information about the nature of the procedure, the costs involved, the treatment plan, or even any expected benefits from treatment. I read up about the options on the berrkeleyperioimplants.com website, and if she had given me any of that information I would have a different story to tell for sure. It turns out there are several different deep cleaning modalities - but she didn't bother to tell me which one she would recommend. It also turns out these treatments can restore gum tissue, which was not part of our discussion at all. Meanwhile, they managed to convince my dental plan to refuse to pay for the initial exam so I had to pay for it out of pocket. So the nutshell is, I was told I needed a highly traumatic procedure, not given any info about the procedure, and got a surprise bill to boot. Scary. I've gone back to my general dentist to get a different referral. read more

I was referred to Dr. Horn by my dentist Dr. Citron and I couldn't be happier! What a warm, welcoming environment with understanding and conscientious professionals. So if you are also concern about the quality/process of the implant and spending lots of time getting recommendations or reading yelp/google reviews you should read my review. I just finished my implant work with Dr. Horn for my FRONT TOOTH yesterday and I can't be happier and I am about to tell you every details and why I am happy! when I was 8 years old, i got into a car accident and had a lot of issues with my two front teeth. The fell and dentists put it back since it was my permanent tooth. 20 years later, on January I saw one of them got infected and three dentists told me that you can't save the tooth and you have to get an implant. My tooth was loose and I was in pain and had to start the procedure ASAP! At the time I was student and didn't really have the money specially since insurance does NOT cover implant. (dental insurance in US sucks even the best ones). I was looking for great dentist mainly because it was my front tooth and I was willing to pay anything for it. I spent more 10 hours on internet searching and reading about prices, reviews, and procedure. and I came across Berkeley Perio and Dental Implants. they had so many good reviews. I even messed a few people who wrote reviews and asked questions about their experience. Dr. Horn name came up the most on the reviews so I chose him. And when I called the office, I was told that Dr. Horn's next available time is in three months. I panicked told the receptionist about my situation and the fact that it was my front tooth and it was infected and loose so I can't wait for 3 months. She was a supper nice person (I wish i could remember her name but I think she had Hispanic accent) and so she said let me see what I can do and she called me back the next day. And she was able to schedule me for next week. So I went to my dentist, got a state plate (the temporary tooth since it was my front tooth) ready in three days. and in that one week, I was reading and watching a lot of videos to learn about the process because I didn't know anything about it. Once I met Dr. Horn, he walked me through the end to end procedure and warned me that this will take about 8 months. First of all, I was with my boy friend, and even though the room was so tiny, he found a place for him to sit and made him feel comfortable. and as he was working on my tooth, he was showing and explaining to my boy friend what he was doing. So on the first day, he pulled my tooth and did bone graph. He said I don't know if your tooth needs bone graph until I open and see and I needed it because bacteria ate all the bone inside and there was almost no bone left to secure the implant. so he did bone graph and they usually wait for about 4 month until the bone is formed and then they do the actual implant and put the screw. So there were two main visits for me 1) extraction and bone graph ~ 1 hour 2) implant ~ 1 hour and after each one I had to see Dr. Horn about 3 time (15min) for him to check the progress and make sure it's healing. So over all I would say it was about 8 visits. But I only had to pay for the two main visits. I would say the painful one is the bone graph and I was in pain for about a week mainly because the tissue are sensitive after that much work being done on them. But after implant I had almost no pain. the cost is : State Plate= $500, Extraction plus Bone graph = ~$2,800 and implant = $2,400 and I have to go back to my dentist to do the crown and I am assuming that will be another $1,200. As you know it's very expensive but I am happy with the work Dr. Horn did and he is just such an amazing human being and I always enjoyed seeing him and chatting with him. Some would think it's a bad sign when your periodontist's name is pronounced "grim". And the news on my mouth was very grim indeed--years of childhood orthodontia had caused lots of gum recession which meant not one, but multiple gum grafts. But in spite of her name, Dr. Grimm made the grim gum reality, well, not so grim. I'd seen Dr. Grimm a few years ago for the first couple of grafts and was pleasantly surprised at how relatively painless the procedure was. Even though I no longer work in the east bay, it was still worth crossing the bridge to have Dr. Grimm tackle my next gum graft. She opens early which is helpful for working folks, as you can get an appointments as early as 7 AM. Dr. Grimm is very friendly, matter-of-fact, and efficient. I've never had to wait long to get in and even the graft only took about an hour. Dr. Grimm also always checks to make sure the numbing has taken effect before she starts the graft, which is very reassuring, and she lets you know everything that she's doing as it happens. So if you are in the grim situation of needing a gum graft or some other sort of procedure requiring a periodontist, "grimm" and bear it and make yourself an appointment with Dr. Grimm. read more

Dr. Horn is uniquely responsive, flexible, has a dry sense of humor and treats his patients like adults. Refreshing. Don't get gum surgery if you don't have to. I am kind of phobic when it comes to big dental work and I had avoided it for years. Dr. Horn and everyone in his office made me feel at ease. Surgery was totally uneventful. My gums are feeling good. Pretty much all you could ask for. (NB ladies: He's skilled, but also the tiniest bit hot. So floss those teeth and don't expect an old guy!) read more

I did a ton of internet research to find a periodontist. Dr Grimm shows up on many local newsgroups with rave reviews. For someone who does this every day, she was incredibly sensitive to any of my anxieties and fears during our initial consultation. A month later, the procedure lasted no more than 45 minutes, and she was fluid, flexible and friendly. She also appears (to the amateur eye) to be very skilled. The procedure itself was uncomfortable, but for the most part not painful. I was truly surprised at how smoothly it went. I had virtually NO PAIN afterward as well. This, I'd imagine, is the true testament to her adeptness at her craft. Tomorrow I get my stitches out and would send anyone to her in the future. read more

Dr. Horn is EXCELLENT! My dentist has been telling me for three years that I needed to fix a receding gum line, and finally I got the courage to do it. They highly recommended me to Dr. Horn. His staff was friendly and punctual on the phone and at the office. When I first met Dr. Horn for a consultation, he was very thorough and addressed all of my questions and concerns. I was never rushed, and felt he was extremely professional. My procedure was a breeze, as were the two follow-up appointments (7 days and 6 weeks). If Dr. Horn took patients as a regular dentist, I would switch to him today. I highly recommend - don't be scared like I was for so long!!! read more

While I give my 5 stars to Dr. Barron Hong and his assistant (no doubt), I can not hide my disappointment with the staff team. Both of my primary and secondary dental insurance were provided well in advance. However, not until 1 minute before I was walking into the surgery room, in the hallway, I was told by the staff that my secondary insurance does not provide coverage, which meant I had to pay $1500 more out of my pocket on that day for the first half of my surgery. I made my decision to proceed on the surgery based on the previous estimated quote I received from the office, but ended up paying $2000 more than I was told. That's not the end of it. I was particularly disappointed by one staff from the billing/finance office, whose first name start with H. As a patient, while I was depending on their expertise to help me better understand what / how / where those extra costs were came from and how can I get a more accurate quote for the second half of my surgery, she was not patient at all and basically repeated that it is my issue if I cannot understand it. She did not have the basic characteristics for working in the finance and working in the health care industry. I do not typically write negative reviews. However, when I do have significantly bad experience in a place where customers are more likely to be treated unfairly, I speak up. This place is one of the best periodontics office in Berkeley. You do get the best doctors in town, but may have to deal with some unprofessional individuals and some surprises on the way. read more

I went for my first visit with Dr. Horn yesterday, and I was quite impressed. I work in the medical field and I have a really high standard for patient care and patient communication. Dr. Horn excelled at both. He was friendly to begin with, thorough with the examination of my gums, and then took the time to explain each of his findings to me -- including showing me photos from each of the specific parts of my mouth that he was addressing. Overall I think he spent a full 40 minutes with me and made sure that all of my questions were answered. I felt comfortable with his treatment recommendations and appreciate how transparent he was with the next steps and costs. I've only had one prior experience with a periodontist, but I've had many dental experiences overall, and this was one of the best. Thank you! read more

Was referred here by Robin Whitney, my regular dentist. Went here for a consultation regarding the possible need for a gum graft because of a minor injury beneath my front tooth. Front office staff was helpful and very professional. Dr. Grimm had a thoughtful demeanor, was a good listener, and was efficient. She told me to come back for a follow up visit at no charge, as it was too early to tell whether the injury would heal itself or not. Then the front staff told me that my dental plan would not cover the visit, because it was too soon after my last consultation. Dr. Grimm called out from the next room that they should classify my visit as a different visit category. This meant that my insurance could be billed, so she probably saved me around $100! read more

Dr Barron Hong is the BEST! I've had three different gum graft procedures with Dr Hong. He patiently answered all my questions (I had a lot) and after the procedures would check in on me to see how I was holding up. On top of that, the grafts came out so well that my regular dentist had to give compliments. Recently had two separate gum graft procedures with Dr. Grimm and both went very well. I too had read about horror stories with grafts in internet reviews, but the actual procedure was quick, Dr. Grimm and her assistant were professional and organized, the pain was minimal and follow-up was thorough. The molding clay for my roof-of-mouth incision fell off after about 5 days, and the clay covering the graft itself fell of after about 8 days, but I was told that is normal. I had Dr. Horn repair damage done by a bike accident where I lost 2 front teeth. I had significant bone loss, and in order to do an implant and cantilevered bridge to replace them, he first had to do 2 very delicate bone grafts over a period of 18 months, then place the implant, and finally when all was healed my wonderful dentist placed the bridge and crown of the implant. Dr. Horn was so kind throughout this difficult process, he called me personally after each surgery to make sure all was well and comfortable for me, he made sure my partial looked good while I was waiting for final implant, and I simply cannot recommend him highly enough. This is perhaps the best dental practice I've ever been to. Dr. Meetu Moody is an excellent surgeon, with a lovely chair side manner. I felt comfortable and assured in what would be happening, and the actual procedure was - dare I say - easy and comfortable. The staff is friendly and efficient, and their processes regarding appointments and insurance are buttoned up. It's all very patient centric - all you have to do is concentrate on your health and getting better.
