Unbelievably great. Deserves 10 stars.
He is a man of few words, but I think Dr. Khalil has extraordinary communication skills; he is extremely perceptive and receptive to the needs of his patients. I believe he also has exceptional technical skills: nothing went wrong (when lots of things could have) and I felt no pain. when beforehand I'd been terrified and expected to.
I'm hell on dental providers. I'm anxious and frightened, and because of it I'm demanding and picky. I freak if the neck rest is slightly out of place (my neck will hurt and I'll tense up my face and that will screw up the procedure!) or the nose mask for the nitrous oxide is slightly too tight (I won't be able to breathe and I could die!) or the shot hurts a tad, or the light is too bright, or ... I could go on and on. Yet during a recent series of two potentially painful and scary procedures, an extraction and bone graft followed by an implant, Dr. Khalil and his team always happily responded to whatever I needed. Dr.Khalil also has a very reassuring air about him that made me feel safe. The result was that I experienced no fear and no pain (with the exception of the usual pinch with the novocaine).
Dozens of times, after the slightest gesture or mumble on my part, Dr. Khalil or one of his assistants immediately interpreted what I wanted and simply fixed it. More nitrous? Done. Too much nitrous now, reduce it? No problem, done. Too warm, sweater off? Done. Etc. How they even knew what I wanted, given that I could barely talk, is a mystery in itself. (*) They all seemed to implicitly understand that my complaints were the result of anxiety, and by responding to my complaints, they were really responding to and calming my anxiety. They even welcomed the playlist I'd brought along on my laptop to calm me down, letting me play it from a table in the room and complimenting me on the music choices.
Dr. Khalil also gave me lots of reassurances along the way - "you're doing great," "this is looking really good," "we're nearly done, look how much we've accomplished" and explained to me, with just enough detail (but not too much), what he was doing - "just a couple of stitches and then we're all done," etc. And all along the way, I FELT NO PAIN. Just relaxation from the nitrous and what became a very interested focus on the music playing.
This level of acknowledgment of me as a person really helped me relax and know that I would be well-cared for. It cancelled out the onerous, and potentially really scary, surgical experience that was going on. It's also a practice that I think must lead to better outcomes. It would seem crucial to be able to monitor and respond to your patient's experience during delicate procedures like this. I would say that Dr. Khalil's personal qualities, including his unusual ability to connect with his patients, are a big part of his technical proficiency.
Also, his entire staff, from phone staff to front desk to advanced technicians, were obviously hand-picked and well-trained. Everybody at every level is communicative, happy, friendly, helpful, positive, even funny. The entire team is five-star-plus. It made what could have been a traumatic nightmare into an actually pleasant experience from start to finish.
I didn't want to do the implant. I went for the initial consultation only because my tooth had started to frigging hurt. Sitting in the examining chair that day before Dr. Khalil came in, I nearly walked out of the room and ran away. But the moment I met him I realized what a no-BS kind of guy he is, that he knows what he's doing, that he knew what I needed, that's he's probably done hundreds if not thousands of these, and that that's what I needed to do. Someone in a previous review used the word "direct" to describe him, and I think that's the perfect adjective.
Bottom line, I feel very lucky to have found these guys. I'm a very tough customer, but I know and appreciate very high quality when I see it. Could not recommend them more highly.
(p.s. I was referred to Dr. Khalil by my great dentist, Dr. Brian Assael. See my other reviews.)
(*) I know that many people choose deep sedation anesthesia for these procedures. I chose to forego the deep sedation and went with the nitrous. read more
