I'm not exactly sure how Barroco landed on my radar; I was taking Montreal recommendations from multiple outlets, and when I was organizing them it caught my eye as a potential place to grab dinner. Pics and reviews looked great, so we made plans to dine here during our penultimate night in the city. Barroco is located in Old Montreal, right on Rue Saint-Paul. The exterior has really charming curb appeal, and upon entry we were greeted by the same. This isn't a large restaurant, arranged with tables and a few booths throughout the space and a bar on the back wall that serves as a focal point. The vibes were on - the restaurant was tastefully decorated with a mix of old-fashioned fixtures, stone walls, and earth tones. The restaurant was quite lively - the vibes were on. Their drink menu is quite creative; we actually started our evening at the bar while we were waiting for our table and the bartender made some great suggestions - both cocktails I had were really good. The food menu is mostly French inspired; it wasn't extensive but they had a good variety of creative dishes. We decided on two starters - the brioche and the octopus salad. The brioche was fine, it came as one roll with a side of seasoned butter. It was a little on the dry side, and the butter wasn't very flavorful. The octopus salad was much better; the octopus was sliced and arranged on top of a ratatouille which provided a good complement of flavors and textures. For my main I got the OG braised beef. The beef was almost pot-roast style, seasoned with maple and aged balsamic sauce and paired with truffled celery root purée. This was delicious - the beef was super tender, and the sauce provided great flavor. The puree was an awesome side - the entire trip was super comforting and familiar while also being new and interesting. We decided to get two desserts - the madeleines and the olive oil cake. The former were baked fresh and came with a side of chocolate pudding and salted caramel, while the latter came with whipped cream and coached pears. Both were good, but I preferred the madeleines; the warm sponge paired with the chocolate and caramel was a great finisher to the meal. Service was great - everyone from the host to the bartender to our waiter made us feel welcome; they definitely elevated the experience. Overall, I had a great time at Barroco; the food, vibes, and service were all on point. I would definitely consider returning the next time I'm in Montreal. read more

This place is an absolute must. We wandered in on a Sunday night, and the bar staff kept us entertained the whole evening. My only regret is not finding it earlier in our Montréal adventure. Honestly, I'd plan another trip just to come back to Barroco. The vibe is cozy, charming, and delightfully quaint. The drink menu is funky, original, and flat-out fun. The music is spot-on--enough to make you want to dance in your seat without drowning out conversation. The food looked incredible too, but sadly we'd already eaten and were leaving the next morning. This is a beautiful restaurant in an old world setting! The view of the stone block walls really adds to the ambience! And the location being in Old Montreal is perfect. Great food and wine pairings. I went with a group of 9 and they have some special order and reservation requirement but they did take us in same day. The service was great and the space is cute. It's small and cozy but that also means the noise level can get pretty loud plus there's music playing (good music). I retuned to the states craving their braised beef. I had it paired with celery root mash, which I didn't think I'd like but I loved it. I also had the fried chicken skin salad and it too was delicious. One of the restaurants that's opens a little later in Old Montreal, but certainly worth the delay. When we arrived, we were greeted by an incredible aroma from the kitchen. We arrived at six and were seated immediately. If you plan to arrive later, reservations are recommended as they were completely full at right when we left. Great wine selection plus a full bar with some signature house cocktails. I had been drinking whiskey earlier in the day, so I opted for a scotch - Dalmore 12. We started with a mushroom dish with a variety of mushrooms and three different sauces. With the medley of mushrooms and sauces, every bite was completely different. The sauces were so good that we ordered some bread to clean up the dish! For the main course, we shared the snow crab tonnarelli as well as the duck breast along with endive salad and sweet mashed potatoes. Both dishes were superb. I preferred the crab but my wife raved about the duck. For dessert we shared the chocolate mousse topped with hazelnut and chocolate nibs. It was on the richer and thicker side of mousses. Amazing hybrid British and Spanish cuisine in a cozy and bustling space with some eclectic touches. The paella is very solid with fresh seafood and spicy chorizo. The beef Wellington is a must order - the fillet is perfectly seasoned and a nice medium rare on the inside with a flaky crust on the exterior. Even the mashed potatoes were perfection. If you have room, get an order of the homemade brioche rolls which are sprinkled with a touch of sea salt. Heads up that these dishes will take a bit longer to prepare but order some appetizers and drinks and you should be okay. read more

The food is impeccable. Every dish was delicious, great aroma, and presentation. However, the price is definitely on the high side. We got 3 main entrees to share between 2 people, and each entree was between $80-90. The total came out to be $250 USD after tip and tax, which was a bit high given the portion sizes of the mains were much smaller than I expected. I was tempted to order more, but decided against it because everything on the menu seemed really over-priced. A couple other things that didn't factor into the rating: We didn't get bread for the table, which was a first for a $$$$ restaurant, and I was also sad that they don't serve the beef wellington anymore, which was the main reason I had wanted to come here. read more

A very lovely dining experience! Made a reservation for my husband & I on a Thursday evening. The restaurant is very warm, cozy, & charming with stone walls, beamed ceilings, and filled with lovely antiques. We were seated at a cozy, corner table by the window. Our waiter was professional & personable. He was very present throughout our meal. We ordered two of their specialty cocktails, which were fantastic, and two apps (tartare & foie gras) and two entrees (duck & halibut), which were all divine. Very good food in a beautiful, sexy room with friendly and efficient waiters. Their cocktails are great too. The dinners are super pricey though, even for Vieux Montreal- and the portions are quite small. Their paella, for example (really more like a risotto) had one prawn and one scallop. C'mon. (French for- "are you kidding me.") Still with the location and ambience, the crowds come, but would it kill them to add more lettuce to the salads, and to add that extra prawn to the paella? read more

The only miss was the coffee, which was surprising bitter and coarse, given that we'd found good coffee many other places. When taking my girlfriend day to Barroco for a Valentine's date, I was looking for a fancy restaurant that felt cozy and warm. Barroco fits this description and exceeded my expectations. With a romantic environment, the restaurant's combination of brick interior, dinnerware, table decorations, and great music made for a lovely atmosphere. For appetizers, starting with the oysters was a great choice after which the brioche bread and butter, melted in our mouths. For our mains, my girlfriend had the Paella which she loved and I had the braised beef which was extremely soft and filled with flavor. The service was carefully timed. We were neither left feeling rushed in any way nor were we ever left waiting for a waiter's attention. What a cool little restaurant! The vibe is so unique. With stone walls and a boars head over the candlelit fireplace and with only maybe 10 to 12 tables it's so intimate. The drink menu was solid and tasty from what we tried. The brioche bread was outstanding! So rich and buttery. We had the Pata negra de Bellota with pan con tomate and it was quite good. I visited Barroco about three weeks ago while in Montreal with two of my friends. It was a Friday night and our very first night in Montreal (it was a four day trip). The restaurant is small, cozy, dark, romantic and inviting. We were sat at a corner table and our server was excellent (I wish I could remember his name). We were starving and essentially ordered the whole menu. Our selections included the following: Pata negra de Bellota (20g), pan con tomate, Pieuvre grillée, pommes de terre rattes vapeur, aïoli, paprika, Burrata du moment, Papardelle Vesuvio, burrata, and the Entrecôte AAA Angus (20oz), pommes de terre, bagna càuda, hareng fumé with the truffle butter and the chimichurri. Every last bite was delicious, but my favorites were the papardelle and the entrecôte. For dessert, we had the Crémeux au chocolat noir which was spectacular. All of the food was amazing and the service was excellent that night. This was the second best dinner of the weekend. I'm sure by now you're thinking, "if everything was so great, why only four stars?" Well, I'll tell you why... Unfortunately, I left my card at the restaurant. I suspect it fell under the table or behind the bench we were sitting on. I didn't notice immediately because we went back to our apartment after dinner. The very next morning, I noticed my card was missing. I called the restaurant several times and left a voice message. No one called me back. Then a little later I called again and got the owner on the phone and explained what happened. He said they'd look and call me if they found anything. I called again a couple of hours later and still they hadn't had a chance to look. So, in the late evening on the way to dinner at 212 Montreal, I stopped in to ask if it had been found. I was informed by the owner that the table was occupied and they couldn't bother the patrons to look for my card. That part I understood, but those patrons weren't sitting there all day, they surely had a chance to look for my card early in the day at ANY point. Anyway, I left my number with our server from the night before, thinking he'd surely let me know whether or not they found the card because he'd been so nice the night before, but NOPE! Nothing! Nada! I think it was extremely inconsiderate of the staff, especially considering I was traveling. For all they knew I may not have had another card! The customer service received as a whole was not the best at all, and left a very bad taste in my mouth. read more

Review of a Sunday dinner, the spot recommended to us by Eater. The place has a dark, romantic ambience and is definitely suitable for date night. Our meal began auspiciously with a good cocktail and glass of wine. La Portena's salade laitue with "trout caviar" was tasty enough, but overdressed and did not seem to merit the price. I began with the jamon- the pieces were properly sliced, and the pan con tomate was savory, but a little soggy with oil. The wait for the main courses was interminable. The server finally came to apologize, on the second round of apologies he mentioned that my steak took so long to cook because it was a "big piece of meat." La Portena's fletan (halibut) was expertly prepared, but the thin rib steak was overcooked. The "bagna cauda" potatoes that came with it were very good as was a side order of mushrooms.
