What a disaster....they struggled to seat our group of 7 even though we said we would break our group up and there were tables free, out of cornbread, out of their hot sauce, messed up our order and did not deliver two portions of corn, a few in our group complained their dishes were bland and mostly rice, and they got our bill wrong and overcharged us for two drinks. Located in downtown Sandusky, I was barely able to find street parking around 11am, by noon there was a line forming. The inside is very modern and a hip place to hang out with friends, would not recommend bringing small children here although they are accommodated. We decided to try the chips and guacamole, the chips were made fresh nice and crispy. The guacamole is also made fresh but could use more salt spice and lime luckily these items are already on the table. I tried two tacos at $6 a piece the surf and turf and the firecracker shrimp taco. The surf and Turf was my favorite the grilled shrimp was good, but could use a little more spice, the steak was my favorite part of the taco. The firecracker shrimp was ok a little difficult to eat the size of the shrimp really does nit fit in the taco should use smaller shrimp, also could not really taste the boom boom sauce, the slaw was nice. My wife ordered the lobster roll, the grilled shrimp taco, and the carne Asada taco. The lobster roll was good the only problem is the bacon, which is really good completely overwhelms the flavor of the lobster, very difficult to taste the lobster. My wife said the grilled shrimp taco could use more spice and her favorite taco was the carne Asada taco. The service was great and the two drinks we had were great, my wife ordered the watermelon jalapeño Margherita which she loved, I ordered the 5oz, 18% fruit flavored beer very strong but flavorful. I think this place has a lot of potential, a couple of simple changes could turn this into a 5 very easily. read more

I am so disappointed. Came to Sandusky to enjoy the witch event. Came to Barra with 7 friends to have dinner. I sat at a table that the employee was cleaning for our group. The employee began an unnecessary banter with me. That ended with me leaving. She was out of line and rude. So sad. If you are in the service industry you are selling happiness. We are visiting Sandusky for the first time. We ended up at Barra and loved it. We are giving 5 stars because the food was excellent but if we were giving a review based on service we would give 1 star. For the food: We had the steak taco, firecracker shrimp taco, beef and cheese taco, and Buffalo chicken taco. We also had traditional queso, cornbread muffins, and Mexican street corn. All was excellent and again why we are giving 5 stars. You must make a stop by Barra to enjoy the delicious food. As for service, our server Bree claimed her area was all sat at once which is why we had terrible service. However, our food was out before our drinks, one drink never arrived, one appetizer never arrived, one side item didn't arrive until we asked about it, and it took forever to get our check. We noticed the other tables with a different server were receiving much better service. Maybe Bree was having an off night but if I were to go back I would request to not have Bree as a server. Don't let our bad service keep you from visiting Barra. The food is EXCELLENT and worth it even if you have Bree as a server. read more

Pretty good tacos. They're served in flour shells which kinda surprised me since I'm so used to corn when I think authenticity. Overall the tacos had good flavor but my carnitas taco was dry. Also a bit pricey. Expect to pay about $15-20/person before drinks. read more

I stopped in Barra during a recent visit to Sandusky and was surprised to find such an adorable, trendy taco place. Service was attentive and quick, and I'd happily dine here again. Yummy: - Street Corn - Perch Taco - Bacon Taco So-So: - Carnitas Taco Skip: -House guacamole: Super bland, and not worth $8. Excellent service and the food is fantastic. My favorite is the spicy beef taco. Just enough spice to make it unique but not too much to be overbearing. The chorizo queso is also a solid choice if you want a little extra flavor. My wife and I feel the regular queso is the best in Ohio. For reference we feel the queso at any Torchys Tacos is the best in the country. We also tried the Queso burger and Barra burger this visit. We prefer the Queso burger but both are flavorful. The burgers here take a bit longer to make so expect it to take about 15 minutes before you get them. Otherwise the service is fast and the staff is always respectful and customer centric. I wish this place had been open when I still lived in Sandusky, although it's probably best that it wasn't around because I feel like I'd easily eat too many lunch and dinners here! That being said, I think every time I've visited the area since moving, I've eaten at Barra... The taco offerings are delicious and such a great variety - I really like the grilled shrimp and the steak. They come with the toppings and are made to order, so if you don't like something (for me, it's cilantro) they won't include it, which is a huge bonus to me. Get the street corn, off the cob. It is so delicious that I'm craving it now just thinking about it! It's a small space, so be prepared to wait (and when it's cold, dress warm because there's not a huge indoor area to wait in) but know that your wait will be worth it. They have a great bar as well and offer seasonal cocktails (the peach bourbon one they had earlier this month was amazing). The staff has always been friendly and helpful as well. read more

Visiting here for a second time after coming home for the weekend for a wedding. Had excellent service however I wasn't impressed with the food. There were seven tiny pieces of the chopped steak and the food was lukewarm. I would understand if it was busy but it's midday on a Monday with 2 other tables present. Also the guacamole was flavorless. The first time I was here the tacos were great, but when I come to a place like Barra and realize I could've bought the same thing at chipotle for half the price and have it taste better, it's disappointing. read more

I really enjoyed my first trip to Barra. While in Sandusky for a conference I wanted something more than the chain restaurants along 250 so with a little help from Yelp found 2 great places to try on my 2 night stay in town. The first Barra did not disappoint. I arrived around 5:30pm on a Wednesday and the place was already abuzz with only 1 table left for seating, however other seating options were available at the bar. I took the advice of the couple next to me and started with an order of queso with chorizo. Thus was fantastic she their hose made chips hit the mark. I love salsa so I tried the salsa sampler- a bargain at $6. I enjoyed the corn and traditional best but the pico was very good as was the hot. I followed up with a bowl of corn chowder and a traditional beef taco.. boring but delicious. I also ordered a margarita and it did not disappoint. I really enjoyed my dinner and was excited to learn they have a location in Amherst which is a little closer to me when I have a taste for sone delicious queso. read more

Word of mouth brought us in to try instead of our usual Small City- word of mouth is how most of our restaurant information is passed about. It wasn't anything mentioned, written, or implied by you, rather others who mentioned the business. Yes, my questions were answered! And I appreciate one making 100% sure, as the original answer didn't match the final answer. Being sick isn't fun! Yes, of the three things on the cauliflower taco, I did omit two of them. They didn't match my diet, so I ordered what I could. And yes, when it came out you mentioned how "sad" they looked. A dipping sauce cup with some corn and jalapeno chunks was added on the side! Please show actual pictures? These are! You seem to clearly remember most of our visit! It is evident to me that you don't think it's fair to post a picture of my food, in the way I can eat it. I'm guessing it's the same way I feel, paying $4 for a tortilla and a few pieces of cauliflower. I'm sorry you aren't happy with my shot of the chicken taco. Snapping across the table while someone is eating isn't the easiest to do. "There is only one water bottle presented to a table of two. We apologize you had to wait for a replacement bottle." This implies there was a replacement bottle. There was not. You have a sign posted that says no firearms allowed? I was not aware of this, and I sincerely apologize. Ohio Revised Code 2923.126 states that [businesses] "may post a sign in a conspicuous location on that land or on those premises prohibiting persons from carrying firearms or concealed firearms on or onto that land or those premises." As the Ohio Attorney General states, "Businesses and persons wishing to post such signs are strongly advised to consult their legal counsel for language, style, format, and placement." Since you feel that off duty law enforcement, retired law enforcement, and Ohio certified concealed carry holders should not have the means to protect their lives and others in your establishment, I would advise posting this on your entrance door! That is the standard placement for it, but as the Ohio Attorney General states, "consult . . . legal counsel for . . . placement." I don't bring up too many issues while dining. I don't like to make noise or cause a ruckus. There are people out there who want free stuff, and people who want to use Yelp or another site as a weapon. That's not me. I have an experience, and I write it! Although I give more 4 and 5 star reviews than 1, 2, and 3 stars combined, not everyone earns it. Unfortunately with this update on your businesses rules, the only part I can support is how clean the bathroom was- and that's not worth 2 stars for me. ----- Original Review: Pretty disappointing. My S/O wanted to go here because it "caters to alternate diets." 90% of the time, that doesn't mean it actually has plant based options, it means they have stuff for the people who don't want gluten (but don't actually have Celiacs lol), or have meals with low sodium, or fat, whatever. So on their entire menu, they have zero solely plant based options. I've attached their menu, and the closest thing is Cauliflower tacos. To be plant based, most of it needs to be removed. I asked if there was anything non plant in it, anything with animal products. Julie said no. So I asked again, there's no egg, milk, anything like that in the barra slaw- "Oh, yes, there's mayonnaise." Okay. . . None of that. What about the lime aioli? No? You're sure? Mayonnaise again. So four dollars each, these two tiny scraps come out. Two tiny tortillas, $.50 worth of cauliflower, and some seasoning. It didn't help that when the food came out we were out of water, and never had a refill any point after. My lady said "eh" when asked about her tacos. I get paying more for a sit down restaurant (I was mentally comparing to Chipotle), as the same price is 1/3 the food. But here I have a server. Who should get water, and know the menu. I wanted to give one star, but their bathroom was super clean, they had paper towels, and they allow off duty law enforcement to carry their gear. read more

Everyone has recommended this spot and finally made a lunch stop on a bustling Friday. Thought I would share the bill so you can see a bit of pricing sample since many have said it is fairly pricey here. But it is somewhat more of an upscale Mexican option and fresh ingredients and cloth linen for your lap. visiting Sandusky from Cleveland we stopped to see Barra, well they do have a reputation. Had pork carnitas taco not very impressive, meat was very bland huge chunks over cheesy. Firecracker taco wasn't any better. My son had black bean tacos should have called it a rice taco with a few black beans. Don't expect chips at your table unless you buy them $9 for chip platter. Usually our experience at Barra is top notch but tonight was disappointing. I ordered the steak salad with no cheese, it was served to me with a mound of cheese. The waitress was very apologetic and brought me back another salad but it literally looked like half of the original salad. My chili was cold and my friends street corn was also cold. I would have been more understanding if they had been busy but the waitress also said this was their slowest night this week because of the rain.
