The service is always pretty mediocre here. If you cant find what you're looking for then you will have to ask someone. Its not very interactive customer service which is okay I'm sure the employees are busy. They do have a large selection and I like to look at their manga often they keep it updated pretty well. Two of the clerks left their registers after their customers left and they moved down the counter to talk leaving one clerk to finish helping with a long problem with a customer. I waited quite a while and finally asked for help from the two talking clerks. They said I needed to wait for the one remaining clerk to finish. They continued their talking. Full disclosure: I used to work at this B&N, although that was over 20 years ago, so...I think the bias has passed. There aren't many "pure" bookstores left these days. Even Barnes and Noble has had to diversify their stock significantly: you'll find a lot more toys, games, gifts, DVDs (Criterion!) and the like than you would have before the Dot Com boom, when Amazon started shoving legacy booksellers out of the market like a stampeding sumo wrestler. Yes, we have the world famous Powell's nearby, which is a treasure trove of knowledge and lore, and more affordable to the customer, but little to none of that money ends up back in the hands of the author, as it's a second-hand transaction (or third...or fourth...or fifth...). Mind you, I'm not knocking the used book model/market...just pointing out the facts. Despite it all, B&N has withstood the test of time, somehow, even while its contemporaries (Borders, B. Dalton, et al.) folded around them; their chapters ended, their covers closed for good. And yes, when it comes down to it, Barnes and Noble is, most likely, a soulless corporate entity, squeezing as many pennies out of the slowly dying print media market as is possible. Hell, even I read most books on my Kindle these days; buying a physical copy of any book is reserved for a handful of my favorite authors, special editions, etc. But there is something special about the feel, the smell of a good book, as well as just simply being submerged in the ambiance and atmosphere of literature. I could spend hours here. I have, in fact...and not just when I was stocking shelves! Us analog aficionados are a weird bunch. This location is surprisingly well-kept, for its age. It's a lot more organized than was often the case when I worked here, and not for any lack of trying on my part! Inevitably coming on shift, the place was always a mess, and I spent hours putting it back in order, every day. Perhaps there's been a shift in the customer base: as readership has declined, the types of people who ever shop at a bookstore in the first place has dwindled to a handful of hardcore bibliophiles, there are likely a lot less people pulling out random stacks of books and leaving them to be tidied up by the staff. Either that, or the employees here are just really good...or neurotic...or both. Prices are MSRP, with discounts on best sellers (up to 40% off), staff recommendations, and sales, so it's hard to complain about price. You *might* be able to find something cheaper on Amazon, but considering how far their star has fallen in recent years, that's unlikely. Also, it's probably here, on the shelf - just come pick it up; you *know* Amazon's shipping isn't actually going to get it to your house in two days...they haven't been able to do that for years, now. Also, as stated before, the shop is very clean, organized, and well-stocked, as most B&Ns are. All of the staff are pleasant and helpful, in my experience (and hey, only one of them *still* works there, from back when I was employed, so again, no bias here!). The membership, sadly, is still not worth it though, unless you are buying more than $250 here every year. If you are, well...kudos to you! Go for it! Barnes and Noble may be the big box of bookstores, but as far as big box stores go, I don't feel as guilty spending money here. I'd rather have this over another Walmart...at least I know the customers here can read. read more

0 stars. This B&N is awful - First of all, everything in there is extremely overpriced; It's $24 for 1 People magazine, that's an absurd price for a magazine! Also they're always understocked, so my advice is don't make any decisions to buy something later on here, because once you come back it'll already be gone. I usually don't get bothered over an item's unavailiability, however, it's agitating here because of the (already) limited selection. Lastly, the customer service here is terrible - seriously. I've had multiple bad experiences with one of the female employees there, during all the times i've encountered her she was super rude, condescending, and pushy towards me. I'm actually a very polite and well-mannered person, especially to people I don't know, so I really don't appreciate or understand her attitude and tone towards me, and I certainly hope she isn't treating any other costumers or other people the same way that she's treated me. read more

Wow, my wife just called to ask on the availability of a book. The woman cashier answered and said Barnes and Noble. My wife asked if they were open since the phone rang so long. The cashier said " we are closed" My wife said "then why did you answer?" Cashier. " Because the phone would not stop ringing". She asks if she can answer a question about availability of a book. This review is not about the store itself (which is a nice enough location), but rather an employee. I was checked out by a young woman named KC and I honestly could not believe how blatantly rude she was being. As a former retail employee, I know very well that no one truly wants to be there or stand behind a cash register for 8 hours. I understand. But I do believe it's in your job description to at least LOOK like you aren't chained to the third circle of hell. I asked about a books price which I thought was on sale on it but did not ring up as such. KC dramatically sighed and rolled her eyes at me before rescanning the book. I was wrong, and that's fine, but her attitude was miserable. As I was walking away from the register, I shit you not this girl muttered "fuck this" as she was walking away. Another person was on their way up to the line, but she did not stop to help them. The rest of your staff seem friendly, B&N. I can't believe how shocked I am. The customer service was horrible, when I called the customer service line the employees were extremely rude and disrespectful to me. I had to call four different numbers and give my credit card information over the phone to this strange line of numbers that I was given, everyone on each number service had no idea what the others were doing and left me completely in the dark. They were short, hung up on me and treated me with extreme disrespect and disregard. It all seemed extremely unprofessional. I also signed up for what I thought was a rewards card, but was actually a extra $60 charge to my account that was extremely detrimental to me and difficult to get back. I also received strange looks from the employees while simply browsing the books there and then the police showed up as I was leaving after checking out, I don't know if they actually did that because of ME or if it was for something else going on there but I felt extremely scared and disrespected and couldn't figure out why, then I saw that! Most of the staff there are great. Except for Brent, the evening assistant store manager. This person treats customers as a bother. Very racist and sexist. He was not interested in helping me at all. Once confronted by my white husband his disposition changed. He would later admit to my husband that he was escalating his rude behavior at me on purposed. They have monthly scifi book group meetings as well. I enjoy going to bookstores and cruising the shelves then getting a cup of joe afterward. It's something easy to do if you just want to get out of the house. Every time I come here, however, I'm reminded of just how much I miss Borders. Borders was bigger and much better organized. I thought it was easier to navigate and find what you need....or find something new. For instance, you could almost always find all the books in a series that you were reading. At B&N, you might find the first 2 books then a few random others and maybe the last book. Sucks big time! Also, some sections like the "beauty" area is only one small shelve. Disappointing! This is the last of the big name bookstores in the area holding on for dear life. I hope they make it but still wish it was a Borders instead. read more

I've been to this book store twice. The first time was to find a children's book about Chinese New Year and the second to find a book about The Holi Festival in India. I searched amongst the hundreds on books about Christianity and Christian holidays and found only three books about Chinese New Year. Each of these books lacked substance and were the only copies. I found zero books about The Holi Festival in both the adult and children's sections. I couldn't believe it, so I asked an employee for help. They also told me they had none in stock. Bottom line, they lack book diversity and the presence of multiculturalism is near non existent in the children's section. As a teacher that promotes equity, this is a deal breaker for me. read more

I visited Barnes and Noble in Vancouver, WA while waiting for maintenance on my vehicle today. From the moment I arrived, I was greeted by friendly employees eager to help me throughout the store. I want to give a special shout out to Becky who works in the cafe. Not only did she provide me with excellent service, she continued to go above and beyond with all of her customers. Becky greeted me with a genuine smile as I was walking to the counter. She was friendly, kind, helpful and extremely knowledgeable. She came from behind the counter to assist an elderly man who needed to place an order, but he couldn't physically stand in line without assistance. She even handled a crabby, demanding customer like a pro! I was highly impressed. It's quite refreshing to receive excellent customer service nowadays and I hope B and N knows what a gem they have working for them. It's no Powell's. If I am going to buy a book it will usually be used, and that is not an option here. There is only one outlet to plug your phone in, and it is in the back corner, where the wifi is spotty. The Starbucks doesn't except my gold card so I can't get rewards, or free refills. Apparently Barnes and Nobles does not match pricing of any sort, even off their own website. Most stores these days will usually match Amazon, but it needs to be sold by Amazon directly. I had the lovely experience of meeting a rather abrasive sales associate at this location named Russell who when asked about this, became very unprofessional. He stared me down and asked me point blank "why would we do that?" I couldn't tell if he was kidding because of how straight faced he was. He repeated his earlier statement and asked if I still wanted the merchandise I was looking to purchase.
