Clean, organized, a small sitting area, coffee and hot chocolate for sale.....this is a great way to spend an afternoon!! As I planned out my Portland trip I had determined to go to Windows Bookseller and my visit to this bookstore exceeded my expectations. As I understand it, this cozy location is smaller than the Eugene location, but it still has an amazing array of books available, prompting many Solomonic decisions about which books to buy and which ones to leave behind. A few minutes after I arrived and started browsing, I heard Adam recommending Walker Percy to another customer. I knew then that this was a place with good taste in theology books (browsing the literature shelf I noticed a lot of the usual suspects among the "Books & Culture" crowd, including Wendell Berry, Marilynne Robinson, and my favourite, Alice McDermott). There are a lot of theology, biblical studies, philosophy, and history books available at very good prices. Names that leapt out from the shelves included Marva Dawn, Stanley Hauerwas, and Walter Brueggemann. Many of the hardcovers I purchased had laminated covers which I always appreciate. The staff were very friendly and helpful and I left with a box full of books. The next time I visit Portland I am definitely going to prioritize visiting Windows Booksellers again.

My Son led me here last weekend when I was in town. There was lots of notebooks, pens, and other stuff to consider, and having a Kinokuniya membership (10% off) was a bonus. David was more interested in the manga books, and we were happy browsing in our own little corners. We both happily came away with a small collection of treasures and a promise to return. There were lots of folks here, making the aisles a little tight. But checkout moved quickly and efficiently.

The store is much larger than the one in Chicago! So of course there was a much wider selection of goods, including a lot more Alien Stage items (know the teens are a fan of this show). We ended up signing up for the annual membership which gives you 10% off your purchase immediately and you rack up points (who doesn't love points) which will add up to more savings. We purchased a hard to find art book. Service was friendly, and answered all the questions we had on the membership, not rushing us at all to make the decision.

Powell's City of Books is HUGE. The Burnside location takes up an entire city block and has SO many different sections. There are new and used books, gifts, and basically every genre and random little category you can think of. The different rooms even have their own names, and the whole place feels like a giant book maze. You could easily spend hours just wandering around. I loved browsing through everything. Even when I wasn't looking for anything specific, I kept finding things that caught my attention. The color-coded sections and maps definitely helped because otherwise I probably would have just gotten lost somewhere in the shelves and never been seen again. Definitely one of those Portland places I'd recommend even if you're not a huge book person. It's just really fun to walk around and explore, and I can totally see why Powell's is such an iconic part of Portland.

I can't give it one star because I love books, and the place was...interesting enough. There's a…read morebizarre little staircase that leads to nowhere but a little loft, which I honestly love, but it's just more messy books. I worked at a bookstore for years, so seeing the random leaning and stacked books hurt a little and I yearned to dive in and start straightening. The vibe was so off-putting and stale, it's hard to explain. Looking around, I could see some quirky things like a cool old cash register, a random typewriter on a cafe-ish table, and a sign that said "the use of mobile phones is prohibited." The only distinguishable sections were fiction, poetry, and Shakespeare. My kid love books and we can spend hours in bookstores. He walked in looking to find some Tolkien, but before we could figure out where it might be, he said let's get out of here. And after a few more minutes of struggling to make heads or tails of the jumble, I couldn't argue.

I almost always find what I'm looking for, and if it's not in stock they make ordering it so easy! What makes it extra special is the community they've built through their events like book club, book chat, and events with other local businesses (partnerships with Bethany Vineyards and Eight Cow Creamery for starters).
