As I planned out my Portland trip I had determined to go to Windows Bookseller and my visit to this bookstore exceeded my expectations. As I understand it, this cozy location is smaller than the Eugene location, but it still has an amazing array of books available, prompting many Solomonic decisions about which books to buy and which ones to leave behind. A few minutes after I arrived and started browsing, I heard Adam recommending Walker Percy to another customer. I knew then that this was a place with good taste in theology books (browsing the literature shelf I noticed a lot of the usual suspects among the "Books & Culture" crowd, including Wendell Berry, Marilynne Robinson, and my favourite, Alice McDermott). There are a lot of theology, biblical studies, philosophy, and history books available at very good prices. Names that leapt out from the shelves included Marva Dawn, Stanley Hauerwas, and Walter Brueggemann. Many of the hardcovers I purchased had laminated covers which I always appreciate. The staff were very friendly and helpful and I left with a box full of books. The next time I visit Portland I am definitely going to prioritize visiting Windows Booksellers again.

When I…read morewalked in I was immediately in awe with how many books there were and how the sections were neatly labelled. The owner was so kind and I felt so welcomed when I walked in. The pricing is pretty reasonable, not as great as some used book stores I've been to, but I understand you gotta pay that overhead! Clean, organized, a small sitting area, coffee and hot chocolate for sale.....this is a great way to spend an afternoon!! The books are very reasonably priced, and you can see she takes care what she brings in....I saw no books that were damaged or overly worn. Lastly, if you bring in books to donate the store, she offers a discount on whatever you purchase that day! A nice win-win!

The person at the counter was so sweet. They have a smaller selection of books but I was able to snag a few I've been wanting to read and they were $4 each! Great deals! Local artists items for sale like sticker sheets, book markers, reversible cloth book covers and more! I love that they had a free book shelf (I left with a pretty handful!) Selected Stories takes a completely different approach by offering very smartly curated shelves full of exceptional reads. Walk in, find the shelf with your preferred genre, and you'll undoubtedly find your next favorite book. The sheer value in the time I've saved can't be overlooked. Once upon a time I loved spending the day wandering the aisles of much bigger bookstores, but these days I'd rather have a little more guidance. Selected Stories is VERY good at giving that guidance. BONUS POINTS: I've met only two staff members in my half dozen visits and they've both been phenomenal.

The curation is incredibly thoughtful with a great mix of literary fiction, nonfiction, translated works, local, national, and international book prize winners. They even have a small section for children's books. All new books. All with fantastic covers somehow?? You just can't go wrong with whatever you pick up here. The space is so inviting, warm and chic. Small, but mighty! Reminds me of a McNally Jackson, which is A+++.
