They were very understaffed the day I went, one server for the whole restaurant, the help wanted sign outside was not for show! I had the fish n chips because another sign said it was the best in the area. The fish was okay but the chips were inedible, literally the scrapings from the bottom of the bowl., tiny broken, soggy, dark brown greasy pieces. Who in the world would serve something like this? The best fish and chips I've had outside England. And I'm English. The beer-battered cod was flaky and moist - perfect. The beer batter was thin and exactly the same as in England. They had tartar sauce and malt vinegar. PERFECT all around. I wolfed it down. The server, Stephanie, was racing about on her own caring for front of house and she never made anyone feel rushed and had a constantly cheerful, happy disposition. We thought about going elsewhere, but the reviews were pretty good so gave it a go. Unfortunately eating outside got a bit cold and my family was a little disgruntled because of it. We tried to make the best of the time, but for $100 meal it left us wanting. Little coastal roadside joint in Gold Beach that has a very casual atmosphere. It seemed a bit grimy, and there were more than a few flies, but that isn't uncommon in some of these coastal restaurants, and we aren't super fussy. It wasn't terribly busy when we arrived, but it did take a bit to be seated. Doesn't seem like anyone working here has a sense of urgency at all. Fortunately, we were not in a rush. We had the Curry Cider Mussels, Wasabi Fish Tacos and the Off Da' Hook Fish Sandwich. Everyone liked their meals. The Wasabi Fish Tacos packed a wallop of in-your-face wasabi (possibly too much, even for someone who loves wasabi). All in all, good dinner, good service and decent prices. read more

I don't like clams, oysters and muscles, but I tried a slurp of the cream and wow, it was very herby, creamy and light all the same time. The fish - Cod and the seafood tacos are delicious. My brother and I were spending the night in Gold Beach, and we decided to go out for a seafood dinner. This establishment has a limited number of tables, so I think that we were lucky that we only had to wait for someone to clean a table before we sat down, quite quickly. Seafood here is local and fresh, i.e. excellent, and they have a number of craft beers on tap. I had the wasabi fish tacos, and the ginger coleslaw, both of which were outstanding. My brother had the fish and chips, which he also said were excellent. We even split an amazing chocolate dessert, maybe a ganache, which is out of character for both of us, but we were glad we did. I have eaten here two different times, and anytime they are open when I am going through Gold Beach, and it is around a meal time, I will come in again for the amazing food. read more

How disappointing!!! Ordered 5 clam chowders to go and got home to find 5 orders of fries. Called in the error and offered to provide 5 soups at no additional charge which I thought okay since I had already paid for them! Sent my son all the way back to pick up the soup and they tried to charge him for it again. My son put them on the phone and the gentleman said well I have to charge you for it. Went in on a Monday, staff seemed slightly irritated due to how busy things were and greeting process was not very professional. Overall there was about a 20 min wait. Food tasted pretty good. I'm not a big seafood fan but these were done very well; the breading on the prawns was just crunchy enough and very flavorful. The fries were quite good. We were on a week long camping trip when we drove past Gold Beach on our way to our next stop. We had been surviving off of camping food for the past few days so some fresh, warm clam chowder sounded so appealing. We looked on Yelp and decided to stop at Barnacle Bistro for a treat-ourselves meal before heading back into the wilderness. They had sit-down dining but we opted to get take-out and eat outside on the picnic tables they provided. They were low on staff so that meant a little longer wait time but we weren't in a rush. The lady who took our order was so kind and friendly despite the lunch rush and we got our food much quicker than anticipated. We originally came for just clam chowder but it smelled so good, we had to try out other entrees. We ended up ordering their small garlic herb fries, clam chowder that came with some of the fluffiest focaccia bread, garlic wine steamer clams and their Brazilian seafood tacos. The good: clam chowder was super chunky and hearty, which we appreciated. We've had better clam chowder elsewhere but it did the job. The toasted focaccia that came with the chowder was also super tasty and paired well with the clam chowder. The Brazilian tacos were super refreshing and clean, perfect for a hot day. The meh: I would've never thought I'd be complaining about too much wine but I think I've found the exception when we tried the garlic wine steamer clams. I couldn't really taste the garlic in the clams because the heavy wine just masked all of the other flavors. The garlic fries had a lot of fresh garlic - yum! But the fries were quite bland and they were not as crispy as we'd like it to be. Overall, excellent service and we loved how quickly we got our food despite the lunch rush but the food was just ok. There aren't many options at Gold Beach so if you're hungry and aren't too picky, this would be a good stop! read more

We came here based on the reviews and what a huge disappointment. We ordered the fish and chips: the fish was downright greasy and the fries were almost black and over-salted (We like salt, so that wasn't the issue. Clearly, they had been salted twice.) We also ordered the fish sandwich-the fish was fine but I couldn't eat the bun because it was so dry. And the close slaw had no dressing. We found this place in march and had to come back because we all loved it!! The fisherman's melt is a fav- bread is amazing too! The fish tacos were huge and my teenager couldn't get enough! The chowder is one of the best. They are also just super nice and the small local feel is perfect! This will continue to be a favorite stop when we visit papa! read more

The food is presented in a nice way and it's a warm meal. The service is good. Other than that - unfortunately we were disappointed with the flavors here. The chowder is mediocre at best with over cooked bits clams and lots of potato's. The ginger slaw sounds so promising but I think it ruined the meal. There were no other flavors to mellow the ginger out and it overpowered any other flavors happening in my tacos. There was a decent amount of shrimp and maybe 2 shredded scallops in there. We had lunch here, and everything was wonderful. We were immediately and warmly greeted, and offered a table on the patio. Service was excellent, as was the food. We ordered the chicken bruschetta sandwich, fish and chips, a burger, sweet potato fries, garlic fries,and steak tacos. My son and his fianceé are both neurodivergent, and the server was very nice and patient about answering their many questions about the food. Bowl of clam chowder - taste was good for chowder. Now the clam part was a struggle. The clams can't be fresh nor local. The chowder had little clam in it and little to no flavor. The Lunker - fish and chips. This maybe my fault but I took this to go and I was staying 5 minutes away, so I thought I'd be safe. The fish was packed on the chips. The chips were garlic fries and had a little cheese on them. The batter from the fish came off when lifting out of the box....be warned, not the best to go choice. This is such a cute little family run business and the food is delicious! The place is small, but cozy and clean so many homemade delicious seafood goodies. I had the albacore melt sandwich on sourdough bread that was delicious. We love to get to the coast to recharge. We picked Gold Beach this time and ! First thing we do after checking into the hotel is yelp best fish and chips in town. Barnacle was right up top for good reason. The fish was perfect; super light batter, not greasy at all! The fish was firm and fresh, and they must make their own tarter sauce, it's fabulous and not sweet!! The garlic fries protected us from vampires all night! Delish! Lastly, coke slaw... I've never reviewed anyone's because it's just blah, but then I tasted Barnacles with sesame oil and white vinegar and wowza, it was a perfect accompaniment to the fish and chips. Great experience, super friendly people with good food well prepared. We'll be back! No pictures because we ate too fast! read more
