This spot is a total gem: warm vibes, outstanding service, and food that's absolutely delicious and unique. We tried their fried fish, which is the most popular item on the menu, and the mussels in coconut sauce--both were a 10 out of 10! The flavors were fresh, vibrant, and unlike anything else in the area. This restaurant serves some of the best food in Gold Beach. It's definitely a locavore establishment, featuring local seafood and local produce. I'm going to lead with something you don't typically see in a review. The SALAD! All fresh local greens that were delicate and flavorful. You can NOT get this quality of greens in most stores. It was a true delight. The Fisherman's Melt, with Tillamook cheese and local albacore tuna and pesto served on a Rosemary Focacia that was pillowy soft on the inside and with bodaciously buttery, crispy goodness on the outside was outstanding. By the way, if you are visiting the Oregon Coast, a trip up to Tillamook Creamery is worth a side trip all by itself. The clam chowder was creamy and thick, and definitely appeared homemade because the potatoes were not of uniform size. If you are a fan of bacon, this chowder is for you. I'm more of a purist when it comes to clam chowder. I am not a fan of all that bacon and all that smoke. They offer a selection of Oregon Beer and Wine, along with ciders. I tried the loganberry cider and it was good; a nice combination of sweet and sour. Their garnish and plating game is also on point. Dishes look beautiful, fresh parsley sprinkled on the chowder and parsley and a nice lemon wedge on the Fishermen's melt. There is local ocean-themed art for sale here, too. We visited tonight when we saw they had reopened after their major remodel. We had about a 10 minute wait but we were greeted immediately and then kept informed of when we would be seated. Violet was our server and she served us very well by getting our drinks right away and then took our order. She repeated everything back to us to confirm our order. While we waited for our dinner, we admired how nice the remodel turned out. Our dinners arrived promptly. My husband had the crab cakes and a cup of clam chowder. I had the Fish and Chips foregoing the chips for a cup of clam chowder. Both of agreed on how fresh the fish was and how good everything tasted. The crab cakes were full of crab and not filler as so often the case. The batter on my Fish was light and tasty and fried to perfection. Homemade tartar sauce accompanied the entrees. The big hit to me was the clam chowder - some of the best I have ever tasted. We thoroughly enjoyed our dinners and hope the Barnacle Bistro will have great continued success. Gold Beach seriously needs some additional good restaurants and will only help the economic success of the community. I've had my fair share of fish and chips and I was craving some so I decided to check a new place out. Here, they do specialize in fish and chips and it's their best seller. A lot of reviews rave about how light the batter is, but unfortunately, the batter is quite thick and the fish cut is not as tender as I'd have hoped. Regardless, the overall food is delicious and we enjoyed primarily the garlic fries served as they use a loooot of garlic. Service is a bit slow but understandable as they're short staffed. Only one server was working and managing all the tables both indoors and outdoors, so I'd recommend this place only if you have a lot of time. We almost missed sunset because the food and the check took way too long, but this is something beyond the control of the restaurant for that given day. read more

Headed to Grants Pass and needed to eat. Yelp had the answer! Fish and chips at Barnacle Bistro. They were due to close in 30 minutes. This restaurant is very unique with lots of character. Fun little counters at which to enjoy your meal as well as the tables. I was quickly greeted and confirmed that I could order to go. They offered a choice of garlic or regular fries. I'm not that fond of garlic. My drink was brought right away. While waiting, I went to wash my hands. The restroom was spectacularly clean and also a visual treat with interesting coastal decor and vintage material construction. The fish was the best I've ever consumed. So tender and juicy while the breading was crisp and light. It was so good, I ate it plain! No sauce, lemon or vinegar. A generous serving of French fries (chips) accompanied the delectable protein. This is a sweet little place with a few surprises on the regular-fare menu like the curry mussels. Yummy. My friend had the battered cod tacos and offered me a bite. They were darned good. The building had a tastefully weathered seaside charm with an outdoor patio as well as maybe ten tables inside. For now they serve beer & wine with a "cocktails coming soon" flyer on the table. I had a tasty lager on tap. We were seated right away and while a sign "we're hiring" for several job positions open, the food came reasonably fast. The chowder is mediocre at best with over cooked bits clams and lots of potato's. The ginger slaw sounds so promising but I think it ruined the meal. The best fish and chips I've had outside England. And I'm English. The beer-battered cod was flaky and moist - perfect. The beer batter was thin and exactly the same as in England. They had tartar sauce and malt vinegar. PERFECT all around. I wolfed it down. They were very understaffed the day I went, one server for the whole restaurant, the help wanted sign outside was not for show! I had the fish n chips because another sign said it was the best in the area. The fish was okay but the chips were inedible, literally the scrapings from the bottom of the bowl., tiny broken, soggy, dark brown greasy pieces. Who in the world would serve something like this? My brother and I were spending the night in Gold Beach, and we decided to go out for a seafood dinner. This establishment has a limited number of tables, so I think that we were lucky that we only had to wait for someone to clean a table before we sat down, quite quickly. Seafood here is local and fresh, i.e. excellent, and they have a number of craft beers on tap. I had the wasabi fish tacos, and the ginger coleslaw, both of which were outstanding. My brother had the fish and chips, which he also said were excellent. We even split an amazing chocolate dessert, maybe a ganache, which is out of character for both of us, but we were glad we did. I have eaten here two different times, and anytime they are open when I am going through Gold Beach, and it is around a meal time, I will come in again for the amazing food. read more

We were on a week long camping trip when we drove past Gold Beach on our way to our next stop. We had been surviving off of camping food for the past few days so some fresh, warm clam chowder sounded so appealing. We looked on Yelp and decided to stop at Barnacle Bistro for a treat-ourselves meal before heading back into the wilderness. They had sit-down dining but we opted to get take-out and eat outside on the picnic tables they provided. They were low on staff so that meant a little longer wait time but we weren't in a rush. The lady who took our order was so kind and friendly despite the lunch rush and we got our food much quicker than anticipated. We originally came for just clam chowder but it smelled so good, we had to try out other entrees. We ended up ordering their small garlic herb fries, clam chowder that came with some of the fluffiest focaccia bread, garlic wine steamer clams and their Brazilian seafood tacos. The good: clam chowder was super chunky and hearty, which we appreciated. We've had better clam chowder elsewhere but it did the job. The toasted focaccia that came with the chowder was also super tasty and paired well with the clam chowder. The Brazilian tacos were super refreshing and clean, perfect for a hot day. The meh: I would've never thought I'd be complaining about too much wine but I think I've found the exception when we tried the garlic wine steamer clams. I couldn't really taste the garlic in the clams because the heavy wine just masked all of the other flavors. The garlic fries had a lot of fresh garlic - yum! But the fries were quite bland and they were not as crispy as we'd like it to be. Overall, excellent service and we loved how quickly we got our food despite the lunch rush but the food was just ok. There aren't many options at Gold Beach so if you're hungry and aren't too picky, this would be a good stop! read more
