This was a great average cafe on the mouth of the Rogue River going into the Pacific. Lots of offerings on the menu. Tried their chowder but it was a little below average among the many I have sampled in the PNW. Shrimp Cajun salad was excellent! Just a casual place next to the jetboat rental business. read more

Food was underwhelming especially for the price. Clam chowder was very bland and calamari steak strips were mediocre. The rockfish and chips special was better because the fish was decent, but the fries were forgettable. I would try something different from the menu if we return. Service and ocean-themed decor were both great. I liked the casual atmosphere and their selection of local draft beers and cider. We had Calamari Steak and Bread Bowl Clam Chowder. Both were very good. The Calamari Steak was cooked perfectly. The chowder bread bowl was just right with lots of clams. The place is clean and roomy. No waiting to be seated and our food was up in minutes from the time of order. We are coming back for dinner tomorrow to try another dish on the menu. read more

We love the Porthole. Burgers and fries are delicious. I also love their club sandwich. Their thousand island is homemade and so good for dipping your fries in. We always get togo food and they're very nice and the food is ready pretty quick. The restaurant itself is cute and right by the water. read more

Plenty of parking, so that's a plus Typical touristy coastal restaurant with OK food in reasonable quantity and reasonable prices (translation: not a gourmet destination, but good if you're hungry). Service was a bit on the slow side, but cheerful. Since restaurant choices in the area are limited, we'd probably come back again -- and keep our expectations in check. read more

For an Up charge sure....didn't ask how much (my bad) ... fish was not fresh and they were small. Largest maybe 3" square. Then 2"...Up-charged $8.00. $27 for 4 pieces of small probably frozen definitely not fresh fish and tots. $1 for take out, credit card charge on top of that. We were staying in gold beach for the week and pick the Port Hole fore dinner one night, we found the dinning experience to be very pleasant. We started off with oyster shooters, and we had the fish and chips. The shooters were great and the fish and chips were fresh and the chips were crisp and the coleslaw was good. On our way through town in Nov 2025 our favorite Gold Beach restaurant was closed for remodeling, so we decided to try the Port Hole Cafe. It has a nice location along the Rogue River, plenty of seating, and great service. It was all really good! We had the clam chowder, their special (halibut), and a tuna melt. The food was delicious, everything tasted fresh. We even tried the carrot cake for dessert; it was excellent. We'd definitely eat here again. read more

I wouldn't label this restaurant family friendly. After a very long drive today (we are on a road trip) my four year old started to have a meltdown over something trivial while we were eating. My husband and I were actively working on getting her calmed down (she is normally extremely well behaved in restaurants-like we consistently have people stop by our table to say how well behaved she is when we eat out- so this was kind of new territory for us). The manager I believe came over to our table and rudely hissed at us that she needed to be removed until she calmed down. I had already been getting prepared to remove her myself but it was cold outside and I was exhausted and hungry and trying to avoid it. While I am very conscious about affecting those around me, almost everyone around us also had children and the way we were spoken to was as if she was rolling around on the ground screaming and throwing things and we were just sitting there ignoring it. There was a much nicer way she could have asked us that if people were in fact complaining - of course I removed her at that point and sat outside with her while my husband packed us up as obviously we weren't going to continue to eat there after that exchange. In addition to that the service before that wasn't very good and the food was mediocre and expensive. Should have trusted the bad reviews because I agree with them about service and food quality. 1 star granted because the Bloody Mary was good. read more

We found this restaurant on our drive from Klamath, Ca to Eugene, OR. Great spot to stop for lunch. The staff was very friendly and attentive. They have a large menu with a lot of choices. The view is also beautiful overlooking the Rogue River at Gold Beach. Recommend the clam chowder in a bread bowl. Hit the spot! And the fried cheese curds were a great appetizer to share. read more

What a joke--this place is absolutely NOT family friendly. Stopped for dinner after a long day of driving. Our four year old got worked up over something and had a bit of a meltdown. As any parent knows this is never fun for anyone and embarrassing enough. Then the manager (said she was the owner... hard to believe) came over and told us we needed to take her out of the restaurant. This isn't fine dining, nor was she making a huge scene... it was a crying kid. My wife took her out while I packed up our food and other kid and hightailed it out of there. On to the rest of the review, as it would've been at best 2 stars without that. The clam chowder was lukewarm and chewy. All the food came out together (except the kids meals, which arrived last). I ordered the Chinese chicken salad; came out dry (server kept asking what dressing I wanted, I said "the one on the menu sounds perfect"), maybe two fried chicken strips since it seems all they can do here is throw things in a deep fryer, and some lettuce and chunks of pineapple. Truly weird. Fried shrimp was tasteless. Best thing any of us got were the kids' tater tots. The server had no idea what was going on--made us repeat our order multiple times, sequenced everything wrong, etc. Don't really blame him, think he was just new. It's more the incompetent boss. Also, they charge a 3% credit card surcharge (fine I guess) and $1 per box for to go boxes, which they'll still try to charge you even if they kick you out before you can eat your food. One of the perks of living in a tourist town on the Oregon coast is that we have a ton of great restaurants and food trucks to choose from (and BONUS not a single fast food joint!) We are slowly making our way through them all. Today we had lunch at the port hole cafe, we split a Bloody Mary and a crab melt. I had a cup of clam chowder and Pinky had his usual order of steamer clams. That crab melt was out of this world! So cheesy and buttery and melt in your mouth crabby. We both loved it and wanted more. The Bloody Mary was darn good, the clam chowder and steamer clams were great but that crab melt was exceptional! We will definitely be going back as they have many other menu items that we'd love to try. read more

As we walked in ( family of 5 ) after a 1.5 hour drive and long football game, we were greeted by "Nancy" at the front desk to be seated. She was very unfriendly - we asked for a table and she shook her head "no" and mumbled under her breath "I wish people would call before", I have worked in the restaurant industry as a server many times in my life and understand how it can be frustrating when you're busy, however it wasn't full in there, and it also wasn't a un reasonable amount of people. We asked her what she meant by that, and she said she didn't have room for 5 of us, so we asked for a 4 top and could squeeze in and or wait, as two of the kids were tiny and we didn't need a huge table. She gave us a booth and seemed bothered- if she would have been our server, we would have just left to not deal with her attitude after a long day. We were all just very hungry and my mom recommended this spot as we are out of town and she's had a previous great experience. We did have an amazing server once we sat down, I can't remember her name, but she was 10/10. The food and prices were also good, large portions, affordable, and fast service. Just too bad our very impression walking in was negative and made us feel like we were a problem coming in. I have to say I was disappointed in the seafood selection. There was no fresh seafood options that weren't breaded and deep fried except for salmon steak at $32 a pop. We came in August and enjoyed the laid-back, local atmosphere. The servers were very friendly, and they even let us come in with our 2 dogs (as long as they were well--behaved). Waterfront dining views, which are pretty spectacular at sunset. Everything is fried, which is pretty much my singular comfort food. I won't say that it's the best food, but the prices are decent - and the portions on some items are also just fine. I ordered "butterfly shrimp" and they were OK, but tiny and "butterflied" in a way I've never seen (so they looked more like octopus, LOL). The size of the dish was really on the small side, but it was fine for what it was. We did come here again on a Friday, and it was PACKED, so we ordered our meals to go - and the fish and chips is the better deal (quantity and quality).
