I want to do this review carefully because I met the owner and he seems to have worked so hard to get to this.
"Barkada" means to have a tight group of friends, who hang out with each other all the time when they get a chance and hang out anywhere they please. If you are my "Barkada", you're my homie! Also means "we are" very good friends.
I'd like to see more another time and yes, I will always support my Filipino culture. Hence, I will give it another try. It was a nice first time experience and I enjoyed it. I really did.
First impression is always very important to me. I was greeted with pleasant smiles and hellos. That was nice...
I chose to sit at the bar because it's always easier that way and seems to have much faster service. My timing was right as HH just started at 9pm, need I waste time to ponder? I went straight for the cocktail menu. I asked what the popular is and so "Manila slush" it is. (Manila is where I was born so, perfect!) I liked it very much! It was a perfect mix of sweetness (not too sweet) and a kick of you know what, and also has a little slice of grapefruit inside (I think it was) the pouch. Yes, I said a pouch. I wasn't sure how I felt at first when it came to me but now I get it! If you have been in the Philippines, when you go to buy a soda or pop from a typical non-suburbia store, they always put the drink in a plastic bag (think of ziploc) and puts a straw inside it. That is how you would drink it! True story! I think that was the idea. I get it...
But you know what they didn't go wrong with?
It's San Miguel beer and the Red Horse lager which, "Red Horse, the first extra-strong beer brand in the Philippines, is the high-alcohol beer brand of San Miguel Brewery, it is a deeply hued lager with distinctive sweetish taste balanced by a smooth bitterness that leads in a strong alcohol kick." (Wikipedia) It was awesome but be very careful how much of this you drink...It will kick your A--!
Then, I went for the HH goodies, I meant grubs. 4 oysters shooters, 1 order of spicy tuna rolls, 1 soba salad and a poke bowl. I was hungry!
I really like the spicy tuna and tasted like it should. It was nice to taste, nuff spiciness-just right. The shooters were nice but the sauce was a bit strong for me. I say this bcs my salt intake is always very low. The soyu was a bit much and tangier. The Soba salad was nice and light and filling as well. The poke bowl? It was nice but could've had more poke pieces. Otherwise, it was tasty and very filling. I thought a ordered a bit much...
I get that this does not have a full blown Filipino menu. It takes a whole lot to have a Filipino restaurant because our foods are not easy to make by all means. However, there is no right or wrong on cooking Filipino foods because Philippines consist of hundreds of islands and were influenced by so many other cultures. True story!
Making a name for ourselves is initially hard work but mixing it up - is a very good way to invite more cultures that we are not familiar with.
I like his set-up. It's straight to the point, sort of a minimalist (a compliment...) and I so get it! Do check it out if you are in the area. You're welcome! read more
