Exterior, located in Shoreline - North City (4/12/21)

I've had D'unik bookmarked for awhile. Finally, I visited this tiny Filipino shop, located in Shoreline's North City neighborhood, this afternoon (4/12/21). In contrast to similar shops I grew up with in Bremerton, Foulee's in Seattle-Beacon Hill, and the bustling Fil-Am shop near 150th/Hwy99 Aurora also in Shoreline, this indie business was tiny. I was also the only person visiting around 4pm. The gentleman acknowledged my presence when I said hello entering the shop. However, he was more focused on restocking the shelves. I looked around and took representative photos of the store's shelves. However, there was no Filipino prepared dishes available as depicted by previous outdated Yelp posts. There were two refrigerated cases towards the back that were labelled 'do not open'. I don't know if that's related to the supposed turo-turo service or not. The shop had the various Filipino centric food stuff: packets, jars, cans, frozen goods, Delite Bakery baked goods, fresh produce, snacks, beverages, bags of rice, even a container of brightly colored duck eggs by the register. I did buy a frozen package of longanisa for $11.48. Always tasty with garlic fried rice and fried eggs (homestyle lonsilog). I gave it 3 stars because of lack of interaction plus nothing stood out that I couldn't get from other Asian focused grocery stores or shops closer to home. I'm sure it serves the purpose for the regular customers that shop here though. Not bad, not great, kind of meh. Just needed a visit out of curiousity and to provide an updated post, photos, and business hours.

Little shop serving entry level meals that starts the path of filipino cuisine. Level one begins with your classic chicken adobo, caldereta and white rice. A flat price of 7.50 and one can quickly deduce it's dollars per square box. An instant repetoire as the mini mart offers other goodies of the east to suppliment their already friendly service.

The owners are so nice! I told them I was fixing my tire at Les Schwab and was about to walk outside and they told me to stay and eat in here... They have a little table and they moved items off of it so I could sit down because they said it was cold outside. I ate their beef stew which reminded me of the beef stew my grandmother makes... So good! And they have UBE ice cream here and Pork Adobo on certain days!! Yummy! I'm sold.

There are about 14 tables inside, and it's an order-at-the-counter type of place where they bring the food to your table. When we ordered there weren't any tables open except a small two-person counter table in the corner. It felt a little cramped, but we made it work. The food came out in about 10 minutes, and when it hit the table we were surprised by the massive portions. We definitely took a lot home. The meat in every dish was super tender and fresh. I'd recommend everything we ordered: the 808 plate, garlic noodles, mango refresher, mochi cake, and the sea salt caramel coffee. We'll definitely be back!

The macaroni salad had a bit more mayonnaise than I would prefer and after a few bites it gets too 'rich'. The crispy pusit has been "out of stock" for over a month. To avoid confusion, it may be best to remove or cover this from their menu temporarily.. The overall experience was very good and I would definitely go back again to sample more of their menu.

Everything on the menu and the specials sounds great, I was happy to see they have a P.L.R plate ($11.) which is Pancit, Lumpia (6) and Rice, this is my all time favorite combo or any Filipino's favorite combo too. hehe. This is the best combo ever!! Ended up with the Plate of Nation combo to share Chicken Adobo (fried) with the 6 lumpia and plate of the Island Combo which came with pork ribs, shrimp, longanisa, Calamansi drink and Cassava Cake. The verdict, Wow. really tasty Filipino food, way better that the over-rated one at Pikes. Our office gets a list of the weekly offerings on Monday, so when I heard that later in the week there would be Salu-Salo Filipino Kitchen, bringing Filipino food, I most definitely made lunch plans. I was coming in from a meeting in Fremont, so didn't go to the pop-up/Salu-Salo Filipino Kitchen as soon as it started service (around 11am). With that said, I nearly missed out on the chicken adobo! I took the last of the chicken adobo an hour and a half after the lunch service started, so was counting my blessings! I ordered the lunch plate, which came with chicken adobo, pancit, rice and pickled veggies. My lunch plate was solid. Chicken adobo was tender and really, really liked how vinegar-y the flavor was, which, any Filipino would tell you that all food tastes better with vinegar! Pancit wasn't bad, but not the best. Some of the noodles were on the dry side, but I did like the cabbage and green onion throughout. Pickled veggies were a nice addition, adding more sour flavor to the overall entree. For someone who hardly ever has Filipino food and desperately misses mom's cooking, I was just happy to have Salu-Salo bring some adobo to the area. I would definitely recommend checking out Salu-Salo if you ever see their stand around. They don't update their social media channels, unfortunately, so is a little difficult to find where their stand will be. And when I asked if they participate in any markets, they do not. But the owners did mention that they visit downtown Seattle often at other office buildings around. Therefore, I have a feeling I'll be seeing them soon and getting my Filipino cuisine on. (Plus, bonus points for the owner being from the Bicol region of the Philippines, which is where my mom's side is from. Love that!)

Salu-Salo offers a wide variety of dishes with unique flavor profiles. With some of the dishes, I can't compare them to anything I have ever tried before. For example, my favorite dish on the menu is the Laing Express, which is made with coconut milk, taro leaves, topped with a delicious crispy piece of pork belly. With a topping of pork belly, how could anything go wrong? This dish has an amazing earthy flavor, with a bit of a kick to it. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. How often to you get to eat purple desserts? Ube cake gets its color from purple yams! Salu-Salo's ube coconut topped ube cheesecake balls are not just adorable, they are addicting. Not overwhelmingly sweet, and perfect for sharing, these are a treat. For those with dietary restrictions, Salu-Salo is a great option because there are plenty choices. As someone who is gluten free, all of the main dishes are fair game. This is often very rare when dining out for me!! Here's to Salu-Salo for exposing Seattleites to what Filipino food is all about. Rosario's cuisine feels like a healthy take on comfort food. Each dish bursting with flavor, yet still accessible to all ages. The idea behind comfort food is all about the thought that goes into the prep. After tasting Salu-Salo's food, I promise you can tell a lot of care goes into the preparation of each dish. I am looking forward to this becoming a Seattle institution, and hope it inspires more Filipino cuisine to start popping up in the PNW.

I come back to this restaurant per request of my parents. My dad likes coming here for their chopsuey. The vegetables are fresh and cooked perfectly. I have ordered sinigang, bicol express and their kare-kare. All the entrees come with servings of rice (2-3 portions). The dishes are meant to be served family style so that you can share the dishes. They have a little sauce bar to pair your food with your favorite sauce whether that's soy sauce, vinegar, etc. The only reason why I give this place 3/5 stars is due to the owner's attitude. I ordered a lechon kawali kare-kare and lechon kawali was brought out, no kare-kare. When I mentioned to her that the order was incorrect, she argued with me that is what I ordered. I told her that we did order it but she must have not heard us. Instead of trying to mitigate the order, she continued to argue with us that we did not order it. It took another worker to pull her aside to prevent her from arguing with us further. We could hear her keep trying to justify that we did not order correctly. The worker tried to offer the correct order to us, but we declined. We did not want to argue any further and just eat our meal at this point. The restaurant looks in good shape and has good Filipino food. They could use improvement on their service. We will likely be back per request of my parents but otherwise I would avoid if I don't need to eat here.
