Exterior, located in Shoreline - North City (4/12/21)

I've had D'unik bookmarked for awhile. Finally, I visited this tiny Filipino shop, located in Shoreline's North City neighborhood, this afternoon (4/12/21). In contrast to similar shops I grew up with in Bremerton, Foulee's in Seattle-Beacon Hill, and the bustling Fil-Am shop near 150th/Hwy99 Aurora also in Shoreline, this indie business was tiny. I was also the only person visiting around 4pm. The gentleman acknowledged my presence when I said hello entering the shop. However, he was more focused on restocking the shelves. I looked around and took representative photos of the store's shelves. However, there was no Filipino prepared dishes available as depicted by previous outdated Yelp posts. There were two refrigerated cases towards the back that were labelled 'do not open'. I don't know if that's related to the supposed turo-turo service or not. The shop had the various Filipino centric food stuff: packets, jars, cans, frozen goods, Delite Bakery baked goods, fresh produce, snacks, beverages, bags of rice, even a container of brightly colored duck eggs by the register. I did buy a frozen package of longanisa for $11.48. Always tasty with garlic fried rice and fried eggs (homestyle lonsilog). I gave it 3 stars because of lack of interaction plus nothing stood out that I couldn't get from other Asian focused grocery stores or shops closer to home. I'm sure it serves the purpose for the regular customers that shop here though. Not bad, not great, kind of meh. Just needed a visit out of curiousity and to provide an updated post, photos, and business hours.

Little shop serving entry level meals that starts the path of filipino cuisine. Level one begins with your classic chicken adobo, caldereta and white rice. A flat price of 7.50 and one can quickly deduce it's dollars per square box. An instant repetoire as the mini mart offers other goodies of the east to suppliment their already friendly service.

The owners are so nice! I told them I was fixing my tire at Les Schwab and was about to walk outside and they told me to stay and eat in here... They have a little table and they moved items off of it so I could sit down because they said it was cold outside. I ate their beef stew which reminded me of the beef stew my grandmother makes... So good! And they have UBE ice cream here and Pork Adobo on certain days!! Yummy! I'm sold.

But I needed to order and pickup food for a potluck, and FilCuisine is the nearest place to get Filipino food for me. So I gave it another chance. Pancit bihon and lechon kawali were excellent. Now, service is still an issue. There was one server/cashier and I felt really sorry for her. She was doing her best to keep a smile on her face, and I wanted to give her flowers or something. So maybe until they get their staffing fixed you can consider getting takeout instead? I will -- I'm a lazy cook who constantly craves for food from home. I'm rooting for you, FilCuisine -- fighting!

This place is located in a plaza of other restaurants and businesses. Parking was plentiful outside. There were many tables to choose from inside, and it wasn't busy at all when we arrived. We ended up ordering both Inihaw Plates, one with Beef BBQ Ribs and the other one with Chicken BBQ. The plates came with our meat of choice, mac salad, a little salad, and two scoops of rice. I wasn't expecting much but I was wowed when they brought our food out. Presentation was gorgeous. Our ribs and chicken looked pretty good, saucy and plentiful altogether as an entree. When I had that first bite of the Beef BBQ Rib, I was floored. I'm pretty sure I took one bite and was just speechless, I'm not trying to exaggerate. The beef ribs were flavorful, juicy, tender, and fell right off the bone. I couldn't ask for anything more. The mac salad was good, it didn't taste like the mayo was too heavy for me. It tasted nice and light. And I had a couple bites of the Chicken BBQ, it was just as delicious as the beef ribs. Also the portion size was amazing. I think I'm a little partial, but the Beef BBQ Ribs definitely altered my brain chemistry. They were that delicious and I'll be thinking about these ribs for a long time. It felt like I was back home at a Filipino barbecue or I was in Hawaii eating at an uncle's backyard. It truly felt like the meat was grilling out in the back and we ate it fresh out the grill. It was absolutely wonderful and I'll be raving about this place to people for a while. Y'all deserve all the stars and love. And the music playing? I'm still vividly thinking about it while I write this review. The pork just melts in your mouth and has such a fantastic flavor to it. The salad was refreshing and acidic, which was delightful, and the mac was really good too. The pork belly sisig was also really solid, though I have to say that the kalua pork stole the show. The nice fatty pieces of pork belly mixed with the rice were sweet and delicious, and I also thoroughly enjoyed this dish. The Fried Oink Oink Adobo was tangy, rich, and satisfying, though I was surprised it didn't come with a side of rice. Our office gets a list of the weekly offerings on Monday, so when I heard that later in the week there would be Salu-Salo Filipino Kitchen, bringing Filipino food, I most definitely made lunch plans. I was coming in from a meeting in Fremont, so didn't go to the pop-up/Salu-Salo Filipino Kitchen as soon as it started service (around 11am). With that said, I nearly missed out on the chicken adobo! I took the last of the chicken adobo an hour and a half after the lunch service started, so was counting my blessings! I ordered the lunch plate, which came with chicken adobo, pancit, rice and pickled veggies. My lunch plate was solid. Chicken adobo was tender and really, really liked how vinegar-y the flavor was, which, any Filipino would tell you that all food tastes better with vinegar! Pancit wasn't bad, but not the best. Some of the noodles were on the dry side, but I did like the cabbage and green onion throughout. Pickled veggies were a nice addition, adding more sour flavor to the overall entree. For someone who hardly ever has Filipino food and desperately misses mom's cooking, I was just happy to have Salu-Salo bring some adobo to the area. I would definitely recommend checking out Salu-Salo if you ever see their stand around. They don't update their social media channels, unfortunately, so is a little difficult to find where their stand will be. And when I asked if they participate in any markets, they do not. But the owners did mention that they visit downtown Seattle often at other office buildings around. Therefore, I have a feeling I'll be seeing them soon and getting my Filipino cuisine on. Salu-Salo offers a wide variety of dishes with unique flavor profiles. With some of the dishes, I can't compare them to anything I have ever tried before. For example, my favorite dish on the menu is the Laing Express, which is made with coconut milk, taro leaves, topped with a delicious crispy piece of pork belly. With a topping of pork belly, how could anything go wrong? This dish has an amazing earthy flavor, with a bit of a kick to it. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. How often to you get to eat purple desserts? Ube cake gets its color from purple yams! Salu-Salo's ube coconut topped ube cheesecake balls are not just adorable, they are addicting. Not overwhelmingly sweet, and perfect for sharing, these are a treat. For those with dietary restrictions, Salu-Salo is a great option because there are plenty choices. As someone who is gluten free, all of the main dishes are fair game. This is often very rare when dining out for me!! Here's to Salu-Salo for exposing Seattleites to what Filipino food is all about. Rosario's cuisine feels like a healthy take on comfort food. Each dish bursting with flavor, yet still accessible to all ages. The idea behind comfort food is all about the thought that goes into the prep. After tasting Salu-Salo's food, I promise you can tell a lot of care goes into the preparation of each dish. I am looking forward to this becoming a Seattle institution, and hope it inspires more Filipino cuisine to start popping up in the PNW.
