Bar Cocina is a great neighborhood spot for an outdoor patio in Lakeview. There is usually lots of room, unless it is Tuesday for Taco Tuesday deals. I wanted to like this place because it has super cute decor and the menu looked appetizing, but the service really brought the overall experience down. I can with a group of friends on a Friday night. My friend Adam recommended it. We didn't have a reservation, but we were promptly seated outside. It took 15 minutes for us to receive menus and when they came, it was only 3 even though we were a table of 5. It took an additional 5 minutes to get water, and our cups were dirty. Food: we ordered the elote dip and a round of drinks for the table. The dip was very lime-y, so if that's not your thing I wouldn't recommend ordering. Our 1st round of cocktails never came. All the tables around us got multiple rounds of drinks and food before our server even returned back to our table to check in. The most frustrating part of all of this was that our bill had a service fee tacked onto it. When I inquired what the fee was for, I was told it was the credit card processing fee that was being passed down to the customers. What doesn't make sense to me is that we intended (and did) pay with cash, so there's no reason the fee should be automatic. While the presentation was nice and the dish was tasty, it was not a creative dish. You're basically getting dulche de leche in between two pieces of toast. I wouldn't say really call this French toast. I ordered their chilaquiles. The presentation on this dish was nice as well. A beautifully executed dishes. You get crispy corn tortilla chips smothered in morita salsa, topped with a sunny side up egg, queso fresco, crema and onions. The dish itself was very tasty, and came with a little bit of heat. Both the food and service was very solid and consistent during our visit. My favorites were definitely the guacamole and the baby got daiq-uiri cocktail. I enjoyed the jerk chicken tacos and my table also raved about the birria and the bang bang shrimp tacos as well. The yucca bites were filled with mushy cheesy goodness and a fried yucca shell on the outside, they are not like yuzza fries at all, so do not be mistaken. Chicago has such great food, so why did this happen?? We arrived to our reservation on time only to be greeted by our server after a FULL 35 minutes. The server showed up to our table and said "Do you not have a waiter? Oh okay I guess I'll do it." After ordering everything at once, we waited another 45 minutes to get our food. Once it arrived, the bus boy poured the piping hot birria gravy down my sister's leg, down her jeans, and into her shoe! She stood up and yelped, to which a passing waiter stopped, looked at the spill, and said "eh, it looks like a design" and walked away! She had to go up to the hostess in order to get extra napkins and soda water, as the waiter and bus boy ignored her and fled the scene. It then started pouring rain, and everyone on the patio moved inside to be greeted by a hostess who could not care less where we went or if we were accommodated. The drinks we got were a bit sweet, though pretty tasty. The food was very mediocre at best. The birria was bland, which should have if anything errored on the salty side but instead was tasteless. The chicken tinga tacos did not warrant hard shells, but instead should be soft shell corn with a green salsa. The guac was fine, though. I truly appreciate when business owners show their thoughtfulness and care for their customers, and that unfortunately was not my experience here. I made a reservation for a party of 4 at 7:30 and we were seated right away, which was great. Upon arriving, I did notice it was pretty busy, but that's been my experience anytime I come here on a Tuesday. We sat and ordered chips and guac and margarita flights. About 15 minutes after, our waiter came to our table and let us know that our food may take awhile (as well as the drinks) because the kitchen was very busy. We had no problem with it, assuming it would only be a few extra minutes. Another 10ish minutes went by and she came back to let us know that she couldn't even put the order in and that the kitchen was on a "pause" (I have quite literally never heard this before). She said it would probably be another 30 minutes until she could put the order IN and another 45 minutes until our food would come out. To keep this review shorter than a whole novel, we waited around 30 minutes for our chips and guac and drinks. When our waiter ended up coming back around again after another 20ish minutes, I kindly asked if she could let us know if it would be worth it to still order food. Another adorable taco spot! We visited on a Friday evening and were seated right away despite not having a reservation. The space is big, bright, and welcoming. A big wrap around bar is at the front which was packed when we visited, but we were seated in the back room which was quiet and had an additional bar. Snapper ceviche bites and firecracker shrimp were both great. Cordon Bleu Quesadilla was so unexpected, it ended up being my favorite, even though it wasn't remotely Mexican food: ham, chicken and cheese, with a honey mustard dipping sauce! We loved the West Town location and this brand new spot is just as good! If you're looking for the BEST margaritas in the area and are a taco fan, this is a must visit. The bartenders and staff were friendly and helpful. The atmosphere is cozy, but a bit loud. In the summer I'm looking forward to them opening up the front of their restaurant and patio toward the back. Ever wonder what the result would be if a cheeseburger and a taco had a baby? Their Cheeseburger Taco is the golden child. It's packed with all your favorite cheeseburger flavors nestled into a flour tortilla. It was amazing! We of course had margaritas, and the bartender asked us how we wanted them made which is appreciated since some people have tequila, sweetness, and spiciness preferences. A word of caution. If you dare to order from the spicy Marg section just be prepared for them to be very spicy. Like kick you in the face spicy. I ordered the Rest in Peace and my soul left my body for a few moments. Had such a fun weekday dinner here with a friend! The patio area in the summertime has such great vibes. There were many groups at the time I was there and a couple of dogs too. Their cocktail menu is full of fabulous options- it was difficult to choose one but I landed on the "Spice up your life" drink and it did not disappoint. Bang bang shrimp being my second favorite. They have some interesting combinations that ive also tried, the cheese burger and pineapple pork which are both just ok.
