First of all....many thanks to Angela for helping me through this process! I have been planning my Grandma's birthday party in Phoenix although I live in San Diego. Angela has been so helpful and patient with me as I made changes and additions to the order up to a week ago. Today I picked up the order and while at the bakery decided to pick up a few cupcakes as an afternoon sweet treat for some visitors. OMG!!!!! So wonderful!! We got a mix of cupcakes but the pink champagne takes the cake for me - pun intended. I can't wait until tomorrow when we bring out the cakes and cupcakes for the party. TOO bad Barb's is located on the way to my son's school...I get into SOOO much trouble here. Barb's has been doing my family's birthday cakes for years and they never disappoint. Great staff and it seems they can do anything!! the best carrot cakes and red velvet cupcakes. yes, all goodies are sweet...and YES the icing is thick and sugary..but, this is how pastries,cakes, and cookies should be!! Coming from back east we were familiar with the local bakery. My sister's 30th birthday prompted my family to find another family style bakery. Barb's had the family feel to it and the cake was amazing. Just walking into the bakery, you could tell that they meant business. the small pastries and muffins in the counter re-assured me that this was the right place. Barb's Bakery did a wonderful job on our wedding cakes. We ordered 6 traditional style cakes. Each was beautiful. I was a little disappointed that I was told that the cakes would easily fit on any normal sized cake plate with a dome. This was not the case and therefore the cakes did get mushed eventually. Also, they arrived later than expected which had my maid-of-honor and mother in a panic. I had to call 3 times on the morning of my wedding to make sure that they were coming. My fiance and I went to Barbs after being significantly underwhelmed by other bakeries in the valley. I had been familiar with Barbs from cakes that had been ordered for birthdays at a previous company, and from the Petit Fours I'd pick up on days when I needed an extra special treat. Our venue had originally sent us to Honeymoon Sweets in Tempe, which we had a terrible experience at. Our ideas were shut down at every turn as "out of our budget" or "not possible" and we left Honeymoon Sweets feeling deflated and like we'd have to compromise on our cake. Not happy with the experience, we reached out to our venue to ask about other options. We were asked what bakery we would like to use, and Barbs Bakery immediately came to mind. We scheduled a tasting with Barbs and from the moment we were welcomed into the little shop, what a difference! We had a great experience! They prepared four different flavor combinations for us which we had requested, and sat down with a partnership mentality to work with us to design a cake that came within our budget, incorporated our ideas, and made us feel like we would get the cake of our dreams. Instead of hearing "no" or "that won't work" from the owner David, we heard, "that's a great idea! Here's how we can make that work . . ." We tried to place an order via email on a Monday for a cake to be ready the following Saturday. We called twice in the following days during business hours and they did not pick up. They were unresponsive and rude when they finally did respond. They wanted our credit card number before they would give us a quote. They did not respond until Thursday evening and then lied about it. Since we are working people, placing an order on a weekday in person is near impossible, as they close at 3 pm. The emails they did send were unprofessional; full of typos, grammar and spelling errors of grade school level. It's just easier and less stressful to go somewhere that's friendly and accommodating. read more

I was calling around trying to get a pink champagne cake for my boss' birthday. I am so happy I found Barb's Bakery as they were able to make the cake and put a special note on top. Although I ordered 4 days in advance, there were other bakeries that could not make my order in time. I picked it up on my way to work and the employee who helped me was very friendly. We were all blown away by how delicate and beautiful the cake was and it tasted even better than it looked. Ive only been here for their donuts after a fellow employee brought some in. If you want the freshest, most delicious donuts around, you have to come here. I'm a simple glazed donuts person, so I usually get a couple of those. But they do so much more than just donuts there too, just go in and check it out. read more

I placed an order for a cake for my grandson's baptism - approximately a month ago. I went in to pick it up today...ummm NO CAKE! Houston we have a problem....the gentleman helping me was very polite and nice, asking details of when I placed the order, of which I provided, still NO CAKE! So, luckily the cake decorator was still there and quickly began decorating a new cake for me...I pulled up the specific decorations that were suppose to be on the cake (I had originally provided one of the invitations for them to use) and she came pretty close....not exact but it was crunch time, so she did the best she could. Gentleman opted to not charge for the cake decorating due to the inconvenience, just charged me for the cake - gee thanks! He kept looking around for the order, found the paper that contained my credit card information (thank goodness my card number wasn't laying around anywhere ) and then found the invitation I had provided...but NO CAKE was made.....not sure what kind of system they have, but this was NOT a good experience and not sure I'll order another cake from Barb's Bakery. I ordered a cake for my wife's birthday for New Years' Eve on the Monday prior to it. The had it ready by noon New Years' Eve day. We e-mailed back and forth about small changes to the cake during the week. It was amazing! I drove 60 miles round trip to get this cake. It was worth the drive. My wife loved it. It was for her 50th birthday and I could have probably bought 10 plus store cakes for the price of this one, but she is so worth the splurge. They even loaded it in the car for me. Barb's bakery was wonderful. They emailed me promptly with estimated quotes prior to scheduling our tasting. They asked us what design we were interested in, as well as flavors. We tasted three cakes and fillings, and left feeling comfortable that our cake would be exactly what we wanted. Their pricing is exceptionally reasonable - for $3.50/slice you have so many amazing options to choose from. Our cake was chocolate with a raspberry butter cream filling, and a butter cream frosting. They did decorative scroll work and ribbon on our three-tier cake, and delivered it. It not only looked amazing, it tasted amazing. Everyone raved about it. Love this place! I had five minutes to pick up breakfast for the office and called ahead to see if they had muffins available. Two minutes later I walk in and then have a dozen DELICIOUS muffins ready for only $18. They were a hit at the meeting. There were only two bad things about my experience: 1). I did not have any cash to tip the great guys who were working behind the counter. 2). I did not have time to pick up or try any of the other BEAUTIFUL pastries that they had. These pastries were absolutely gorgeous and looked fantastic. They definetely won me over with their excellent service and beautiful/delicious breakfast food items. One of the best bakeries I have been to in Phoenix! You can really taste that it is homemade. Confused by the negative reviews but really could not say anything more positive about Barbs! If you like black forest cake you have GOT to check out the black forest cupcake. I was a little taken back by the price of the cupcake when I saw its size but it was FILLED with cherries, which made up for the small size of cake. Petit fours are delicious and sugar cookies are soft and chewy. I can see myself making many visits to Barb's Bakery in the near future. read more

The baked goods are fabulous - the servivce not so good. I have ordered for next day pick-up and arrived to find my order had not been prepared. Although the owner graciously didn't charge me for the replacement choice, I was very disappointed. Yesterday, I left an order on Barb's messaging during business hours and specifically asked for a call back to confirm. Never heard and the order is not there this morning - like they never received it. My suggestion, call ahead before you drive down there and have a back-up plan in case they let you down. Barb's Bakery did my wedding cake, and if I do say so myself, it was the prettiest cake I've seen. (We got lots of compliments!) As (or more) importantly it was delicius. I like vanilla and my now-husband likes chocolate so they did layors of both (the vanilla had a rasberry filling). I literally ate 3 pieces of my own wedding cake the night of my wedding.
