Was especially interested in coming after knowing the bar manager (Sarah) has won awards in the industry. We tried: - Apricot Old fashioned $10 - great value! Strong with a hint of apricot. - Classic Martini $11 - it was Martini month when we went so martinis were featured with great prices! Definitely not my fave martini in the city but could not beat this price and it was enjoyable still. - Mezcal drink (I think it was the Sea Senora) $18, I had this and loved it. I'm a fan of mezcal and this was no exception. Great flavors. - Lamb Crepinette $17 on HH, we all enjoyed this! Not too "lamb-y" if that makes sense. - Point Judith Squid Salad - $14 on HH, I really enjoyed this salad as it reminded me of Spain/Portugal, which I'm a huge fan of. It's a gorgeous Seattle day and I was looking for a place to ride my bike to. Yelp said this one had bike parking so we decided to check it out. First off, it does not have bike parking. That was a little awkward (but obviously not the restaurant's fault, just an FYI). It does have giant windows, lovely staff, and $2 off plates for happy hour. The cocktails came out looking like they were ready for a photoshoot, one bright and citrusy with that dramatic ice sphere, the other pink and charming with its blueberry crown. The grilled octopus was tender with just the right char and it was the best dish we had! Absolutely loved Bar Sur Mer! The ambiance is very cute and warm, perfect for a date night or a cute night out with friends. Staff were really friendly and patient to give us different recommendations based on our preferences. We tried the charred Mediterranean octopus, lamb crepinette, Manila clams, and wood-fired hongos. All were beautifully prepared and delicious. The cocktails were just as impressive: I had the NY sour and it was incredible. Bar Sur Mer is that perfect little neighborhood tapas bar serving great vibes, tasty small plates, and phenomenal cocktails. The atmosphere was laid back and charming. The high ceiling creates a spacious feel and the center capiz chandelier is a nice touch. The foliage perfectly ties with the space and the lighting adds to the mood. My husband and I decided to stop by for afternoon drinks and appetizers. Our server was accommodating and allowed us to choose where to sit. Their happy hour is daily from 5PM to 6PM and they had a decent selection of wines and cocktails. Of course, being a bourbon guy, I ordered the Glorioso. The drink had a wonderful anise and orange flavors and was served over a large ice cube. After much deliberation, we decided on a surf and turf appetizer journey. We ordered a dozen oysters on a half shell, seawolf baguette, beef tartare, and charred mediterranean octopus. I was impressed at how our server timed the arrival of each appetizer. He was mindful and didn't want to immediately crowd the table with our entire order. The oysters were freshly shucked and served with a peppercorn mignonette. Sealwolf baguette was amazing and came with mini dish of whipped confit garlic and chive butter. The beef tartare came next and was served with a quail egg yolk that still in the open shell. We mixed the yolk with beef before serving. Of course, the tartare was also amazing. The final dish was the charred mediterranean octopus topped with a sherry pimenton vinaigrette and herb salad. This was our second time over here. First time we stopped here for drinks before grabbing dinner next door, the drinks were so unique and delicious. My drink was a take on the caprese. The bartender is super knowledgeable and is passionate about her craft. All the food we tried was amazing too - we got the jamon chips, lamb meatball and basque cheesecake. We walk by this location often, and were pleased to see that a seafood-oriented establishment joined the likes of Flintcreek, which served many obscure meats and heavily game laden. Type of cuisine: While my first visit was limited to mocktails, Chef Eric prepares "Pacific American style cuisine" at all of his restaurants (FlintCreek, RockCreek). Bar Sur Mer offers a Spain-inspired menu, emphasizing fresh ingredients with pronounced flavors from the Pacific Northwest and around the world. Ambiance: Small and intimate, yet modern and minimalist, the space has warm, inviting and small booths set in bay-style windows, as well as tables with pairs of chairs for the smaller parties, couples that dine in. The restaurant is 21+ and is most obvious as the bar takes up the majority of the interior, which is also laden with windows allowing the natural light of long summer evenings to give ambiance to the space. What I ordered: I selected the Red Minnow ($14) off of the Zero Proof drinks menu. As I do not consume alcohol, the lack of creativity in mocktails without the use of zero proof alcohol-flavored beverages was a bit of a disappointment. The Red Minnow, minus the Giffard Apertif was delightful. It consisted of Hibiscus Tea, Agave, Lime and an "orange twist". The side of soda water I requested allowed for it to last a bit longer, while giving way to a "fun" beverage enjoyed with friends. What I loved: The service was friendly and kind. They were fresh with a hint of mint/orange. Very refreshing for a coffee cocktail, did not once taste too heavy. I love dining at this beautiful place! We stopped here for an early dinner. It's great for happy hour in Greenwood, discounted small plates with cocktail and wine specials. The drinks and wine selection are very good, perfectly curated, and the service is top notch! Josiah and Sarah are super on top of making sure we had water and drinks and clearing our plates when necessary. Another "fancy" place in greenwood. I believe this is the sister bar to the dinner establishment next door. It is solidly high end cocktails and seafood tapas vibes. Space is fairly small; maybe a dozen tables plus bar seating. They have a handful of wine and beer options, but I think most people come for the liquor based drinks. Quality of the food was very good. Paid about $85 for 2 drinks (wine) and half of 5 plates which I would say worked out to be an extremely light dinner or a medium to large size appetizer course. This included tip and a 4% service charge retained fully by the establishment. (Personally, I would really rather companies just increase menu prices by 4% up front as it's more honest.) They do have daily happy hour from 5-6pm which is $2 off plates and specific drink deals. If you've got money to spend, this is a fun place to do it. read more

I'm not in Greenwood often, but was in the area and wanted to stop for Happy Hour, so I chose this spot based on a rec from some friends. Walking in, I could just tell that this place was going to be good. The vibes are immaculate and they have really cool art, plants, chandeliers, and the overall aesthetic is just very cool. It's pretty small, but doesn't feel tight or cramped at all. The servers are all super friendly and everything came out super quick. I had a hard time with the menu because they have SO many cool cocktails that it was almost impossible to choose one. I ended up getting the lilikoi mai tai and it was STUNNING! Came with coconut foam and a dried flower, so I ended up spending almost as much time photographing it as I did drinking it. Didn't try the food, but the plates around me looked great. Look, I'm pro "large plate". Don't tell me that your small plates are shareable. You could always put more food on a larger plate and make it MORE shareable. Even though the plates at Bar Sur Mer were tiny, the flavors were out of this world. The butternut squash was insane. Just the most outrageous fall flavors known to mankind packed into this thing. It was a very gourd time. And I knew they were cooking up some clams when I came in here. As a Cape Cod man I can smell clams cooking from a mile away. They weren't even on the menu, but the waiter snuck in a mention of them halfway through our meal. We decided to indulge, and they were phenomenal. They come with a fantastic butter sauce and sausage medley. I think it's just one person cheffing up all of these dishes in a cool little oven in here. It's a neat place. I used to love having brunch at FlintCreek Cattle Company when they still had it pre pandemic, so when I heard that Bar Sur Mer was owned by the same chef, I knew I had to see what it was about. Greenwood downtown where this bar is located is my closest downtown, so I was so excited when this fancy cocktail bar popped up in my neighborhood! They have a great selection of cocktails and some small plates. They also have a daily happy hour 5-6pm with $11 cocktails! Came here for a birthday dinner, and had put that in the notes for the open table reservation. Along with an allergy. Not sure if they didn't check the notes or what, but neither were mentioned when we were sat or before we paid our bill. So if you're going hoping my for a free dessert or anything, I don't think they do it. The food was amazing, we tried so many things. U-10 Scallop and patatas bravas were my favorite, followed closely by the octopus and clams. The bread with the garlic confit and chive butter is INSANE. For cocktails we had the lilikoi mai tai, and glorioso. Both were perfectly balanced and delicious, though I wish we would've switched to a wine with our meal to really elevate it. For a Saturday at 6 pm, it was quiet for being pretty full in the bar, which was nice. Seems like they have a standard seating and bar seating, we sat in standard and were perfectly comfortable. Stumbled upon this restaurant by happenstance because we were looking for a place that was open on Monday evenings! So glad we found it and during the meal found out it was by the same owner as flintcreek. Where do I start? The decor is so vibrant and welcoming - especially loved the portrait of a woman near the wood fire oven ;) The drinks were incredible - loved seeing them make their own syrups during dinner as well! Between the two of us, we ordered four tapas (plus dessert) - patatas, octopus, mackerel, and tartare. Each were so unique in flavor; it's really hard to pick which was my favorite. Perhaps the tartare because I just loved the presentation of it with the lil quail egg that you got to mix in yourself. The octopus was so tender and perfect - honestly the only thing I could potentially negatively comment on for the entire meal was that some of the potatoes under the octopus were a little underdone but not inedible. The little salad on top of the octopus was oh so delicious as well! I could have probably eaten 4 plate portions of the patatas; such a unique take on this classic tapas dish! We ended the meal with a basque cheesecake which had this delicious yuzu marmalade - absolute perfection and it wasn't too sweet (the highest compliments). Aesthetically, this place hits all of the visual high notes when you walk by it on the street - it feels very harmonious with its coastal soft blue/green/pink color palette. We were intrigued; we love RockCreek and FlintCreek, so we decided to give it a go. Whoops. Not making that mistake again. Contrary to the glowing reviews from others, we were underwhelmed by the slow/sloppy service, the teensy portion sizes, and the one-note flavors of the food and beverage. We'll start with the service: we waited almost 30 minutes for drinks. Multiple food items, including the vanishingly-small Iberico ($22 for maybe 1 ounce - check out the photo included in this post) arrived before the grapefruit g&t's. This place is billed as a bar (Bar Sur Mer): the drinks should not be the items that are the last to arrive at the table. No explanations from the staff. Moving on to the food: it's just okay and for the premium pricing and the provenance (is this really an Eric Donnelly place? Not feeling his touch here at all?), a disappointment. The Iberico was not only paltry, it was covered in olive oil and salt (not necessary); the $16 scallop crudo was a single scallop slivered into 3-4 pieces, placed on a slick of tasteless vegetal purée, and sprinkled with crispy prosciutto (the only discernible flavor on the plate); the patatas bravas was $11 for 5-2" coins of potatoes; and although I didn't take a photo of it, the real insult to our dining intelligence was the $20 braised artichoke salad = ONE artichoke heart, split into three dainty wedges, 3 leaves of endive, and maybbbbe 3 haricot vert, drenched in a heavy-on-the-vinegar dressing, and sprinkled with a few olives. A total head scratcher of a "salad." It was more like very composed finger food (for a solo diner). When the drinks finally made it to the table they were fine. Superficially pretty, but not particularly interesting, flavor-wise. The tarragon, pink peppercorn and floral garnishes didn't actually add any notes to the drink itself. It tasted solely of gin, tonic and a bit of grapefruit. We decided to leave after one drink and the lackluster food experience. They also offer boeuf tartar, and lamb dishes for the meat eaters (didn't try them). The patatas bravas, which are usually a staple in Barcelona restaurants, were good, but not great. Such a solid spot in Greenwood! No reservations so recommend getting there early-ish. My partner and I got there at 6:10 or so on a Saturday and got the last table. The inside is super cute and def a good date night spot! We got the Andiamo and Queen Anne's Revenge for drinks. I loved the queen Anne's revenge! I'm usually not a fan of mezcal since it's so smoky but it's really subtle in the drink. The Andiamo was a little too strong for my taste but my partner really liked it! I just prefer fruitier drinks, so it just wasn't the right drink for me. The food was all great! We got the squid, Icelandic cod throats, beef tartare, octopus, and Manila clams. Our favorite was definitely the Icelandic cod. Maybe it sounds strange bc it's throat but it's SO good. The cod is so tender, and the flavors are perfect. We also loved the clams! Bar Sur Mer is the newest spot from Chef Eric Donnelly in Seattle's Greenwood neighborhood. His other established spots include RockCreek Seafood & Spirits in Fremont and Flintcreek Cattle (around the corner) in Greenwood. I would describe this spot as a casual, hip small plates/tapas pocket bar with Pacific Northwest flair at 4.5 stars, but rounding up to 5. Overall they are doing fairly well from the get go for their first week and a half. Bar Sur Mer is comparable in spirit with Bar Miriam on Queen Anne. I had been anticipating its opening after driving past several times and after reading a well written piece in Seattle Met (see link via tips). It finally opened by word of mouth, no significant soft opening announcement on 7/28/22. I got a late night peek and helpful details from the host on 7/29/22. Fellow Yelp Elite/IG friend Wendy K and I tried to dine here on 8/1/22, but found it closed until the third (we ended up at Flintcreek Cattle for HH instead). I tried again on 8/4/22 but there was a bit of a wait, place was full capacity by 6pm. The saying third time's the charm was definitely not applicable. However, a spontaneous visit on my fourth try worked (8/6/22). I selected a two top on the lower level, not in the immediate bar area. I had already seen the menu previous times, so I was ready to order. There was a bit of a pause before my cocktail order, then the rest of my order was taken. There was good coverage among four people, but still getting in synch. It was also good to see Chef Donnelly at the helm onsite. So here's what I ordered: *Glorioso cocktail ($16) - Bourbon, Smith & Cross Jamaican Rum, Atxa Patxaran, Moscatel, Star Anise, Orange Peel Strong, smooth *Charred Mediterranean Octopus, Salsa Verde Potato Salad, Black Garlic Sauce, Celery Leaf ($25) Lovely plate presentation. I tried two bites, the rest was boxed up for The Homie, since this is a 21+ spot. He enjoyed that it was on point and not rubbery. *San Juan Island Lamb Crepinette, Almond Romesco, Braised Leek, Piparra, Sea Salt ($24) I enjoyed this flavorful caul fat preparation with the romesco sauce and braised sweet leeks. *Burnt Basque Cheesecake, Yuzu Marmalade, Powdered Sugar ($13) I asked for this as takeout and great care was given when boxed up. The Homie enjoyed this. I snagged a bite and it had great texture and flavor. It is a toss up between this version or the one offered by SUSU Dessert Bar in the CID. With tax and modest tip, my bill was just shy of $100. A bit pricey. It'll be interesting to see how Bar Sur Mer stacks up long term with other small plates/tapas spots like The Harvest Vine (Madison Valley), Ocho (Ballard), Tapas Lab (Green Lake), List (Belltown), Itto's Tapas (West Seattle/Junction) and MariPili Tapas Bar (Capitol Hill/First Hill) to name a few. I didn't loiter much onsite, as I saw folks wanting seating and were wait listed. Nice system where they take your name and cell phone, you receive a text when there is availability for your party. It was pleasant too that the service was unobtrusive, no crazy upsells, and allowed me to dine without feeling rushed. Pro tips: Full house within the first hour of opening (daily service 5pm to midnight). Be prepared for a 30-60 minute wait during peak time. No reservations, first come first served. Best seating arrangements are available for one and up to four people. Showing up with larger groups would be a challenge since this is a 35 people capacity spot. What a lovely spot!! I took my partner there for their birthday and it was just fantastic. It was top of us so we had five or six different things and several drinks and the food was wonderful. Everything was so creative and balanced! The honeyed mushroom dish was unbelievably good. And I think the cod cheeks were the big stand out. We happened to go on a very quiet night, because everyone was home watching the Seahawks secure their place in the Super Bowl. We had the whole restaurant almost to ourselves! The bartender/server was delightful and each course just built on the last one so that we had many small plates of delightful tastes, gathered in front of us. I highly recommend this restaurant. It brought me back to my trip to Barcelona many years ago and how much I loved sitting, eating, tapas, enjoying a lovely drink in a quiet and refined yet fun atmosphere. read more

If you're looking for a place for trendy, elevated tapas - this is what you are looking for! The cocktails are good, the NY Sour is my favorite!Tthe food is fancier than most Spanish tapas places and very good, however the patatas bravas are disappointingly small (just 5 baby potato halves). I typically judge a tapas place by their patatas bravas and while they were delicious (especially with the bits of iberico), there simply was not a sufficient amount to satisfy the craving even when just dining as a party of 2. Now I could order more, but over $2 per baby potato half is too steep to warrant more than one order for me. read more

We went into Bar Sur Mer before going to FlintCreek Cattle on a Friday evening. We did not have a reservation, though we were able to find a seat at the bar, which was cool because in front of the 'kitchen,' so we could watch the chef at work. We just did a couple small bites, the point judith squid wood-fired, white beans, picholine olives, tomato, soffrito vinaigrette salad and the marcona almonds, fines herbs, sea salt, olive oil. The salad was super-well balanced, between salty, refreshing, and grilled. It was a very nice salad and the almods were 'good,' they were salty, fatty, and something very easy to pair with a cold drink. Definitely a nice snack. We were able to watch a number of items come out of the oven and they all looked delicious. If we didn't have dinner planned immediately after our "Happy Hour," then we would've tried at least the charred mediterranean octopus, salsa verde-potato salad, black garlic sauce, celery leaf, agrumato, because it looked delicious. We will definitely be back at Bar Sur Mer for the full dining experience. In addition to the wood, there was just a really nice aesthetic present throughout the restaurant. There was a nice balance of neautral colors, like whites and browns, with a nice accent of greens and plants too - I just really like the 'vibe. Also, the staff was super friendly. Even though the restaurant was fairly busy, because we were sitting at the bar, in front of the kitchen, the chef was kind enough to speak with us while we were eating. We learned that Bar Sur Mer is a 'related' restuarant to FlintCreek Cattle and the Chef splits time between the two restaurants, so he was able to make recommendations for the other restaurant - which all proved to be good.
