BAR is the epitomy of all that New Haven has to offer...pizza, beer and dancing. It is one of the few long standing spots in the downtown area that has a consistently good atmosphere for a fun night out. I have been many times over the past 10 years and although their pizza is not my favorite, I do like it, and I love their signature salad. The wait for a table at peak times is difficult, as is making a reservation because they only accept them for groups of 10 or more. The back room/dance floor gets packed from 10pm on. You really can't beat the $3 well drinks from 10-11pm, so its worth it to get there early...they also start charging a cover charge at 10pm. They have a free coat check too, which is nice in the cold weather. read more

Whenever I'm anywhere near New Haven, I feel like I'm obligated to visit any apizza joint because they have a unique style and flavor all their own. After checking out some reviews on Yelp, I found myself at BAR. The white pie with mashed potatoes and bacon was recommended in many reviews and my server said it was what they're know for. I actually thought the pie didn't really live up to the hype. It was good, but had a soggy crust and it was not really pizza in my opinion. We also ordered a red pie with mozzarella (also commonly referred to a "plain pie"), and that was more like it. It was really tasty......the crust however was very thin, especially compared to a lot of other apizza places in the area. They have just 1 salad option and it comes in 2 different sizes. It had leafy greens, apple slices, blue cheese chunks and pecans mixed in a vinagarette dressing........which didn't really appeal to me at first, but after tasting it, I found it to be surprisingly awesome. The space itself has a really cool vibe. Dark wood surrounds you and a couple of bars make for an old school steakhouse type of feel. The menu consists of 1 page of pizza and about 5 pages of beer and spirit choices. I didn't drink any alcohol when I visited but they had some really interesting options. The pizza was the reason why I went, so for that alone I can only muster 3 stars, but the overall atmosphere was really cool and the server was quick and friendly, so I'm going to bump it up to a 4 star review. read more

This was better than I had expected. A good number of beers available, split between bottled and draft. (They had a nitro available!) Bar service was quick and I enjoyed my Milk Chocolate Stout. There's a pool table (no cost- but they cap you if it's busy!). We sat down for pizza (group of 5) and got a large pepperoni red pie and a small white mashed potatoes and bacon pie. I thought the mashed potato pie was so good! Would recommend. I thought the pepperoni pie was mediocre. We weren't completely full - I'd order a medium and a large between 5-6 people if I went again. Sweet as she was she helped me with beer selection as she handles the BAR like a true champ giving folks some of the best drinks but also Pizza options with a taste of Sappori D'Italia! When I think of amazing pizza, the first place that comes into mind is BAR. I was lucky enough to grow up down the street and have yet to find pizza that revivals this place. There is usually a wait for a table even if you try to avoid the lunch and dinner rushes. The longest I've waited is 20 minutes and we spent the time walking around the beautiful neighborhood exploring the unique boutiques. The pizza is the thinnest crust I've ever had! Cheesy, crisp crust, I can eat a whole medium pie myself! Although I love toppings, my go to at Bar is their red pie with mozzarella. It's simply delicious!! And don't forget to try their salad- mixed greens, candies pecans, pears, crumbled blue cheese. Having some greens with your dinner makes you feel less guilty for eating a whole pie read more

Not about to get lost in the land of Frank Pepe's, Modern Apizza and Sally's, the promise of brick oven Pizza, freshly brewed Beer and Dancing luring in locals and Ivy League students for over a decade, it was en route from Manhattan to Mystic that a stop was made at BAR in New Haven, a nearly 45-minute wait for tables benefitting solo diners willing to dine at one of two actual Bars where the full menu is available. Originally established as a Microbrewery but quickly developing a following for New Haven's signature style of charred Pie, the Food options actually limited to just that and a lone Salad with plenty of customization available, it is shortly after seating that diners are greeted by one of several bustling staff members, Beer flowing from taps almost endlessly and Pies emerging from an enormous oven at a rate of one every couple minutes. Open every night of the week - as well as for lunch Wednesday through Sunday - with three sizes of not-quite-round Pizza presented on baking trays, it was perhaps fifteen minutes after placing an order that two "smalls" arrived, the bartender's flirting with an EMT in uniform unfortunately delaying water refills but the sixteen slices hot and fresh with 3-4 more than capable of sating the average diner. Reportedly using a gas oven instead of the competition's coal, an odd fact as the oven closely resembles Pepe's and Modern with Pizzaiolos using lengthy wooden peels to insert and extract Pizzas, there is nonetheless no doubt that this is New Haven-style on first taste, the Crust extra thin and medium-crisp but still capable of being folded whether one selects simple Mozzarella and housemade Tomato Sauce or BAR's signature white Pie with no Cheese but a carb-load buoyed by garlicky Mashed Potatoes and Bacon Crumbles. read more

Lots of people rave about BAR and I can see why. It's got that underground feel thanks to its misnomer of a name, an inconspicuous entry way and uber dark interiors with exposed plumbing. They've also got a live DJ in the evenings that transforms the back room into a dance club (what else did you think those snazzy dangling light fixtures were for??). However, while some might be crazy for its ambience, I'm not so sure I'm crazy about the food. If I hadn't heard about the place from a friend or the internet, I probably would never have known the place served pizza. "Pizza", though, might not be the most fitting term to describe what they serve. Don't get me wrong. Their toppings are the downright freshest I've had in New Haven. The combination of the white pie with clams, a CT classic, I'm told, was supreme. Of all the white pies I've tried, BAR's probably wins. The clams were unbelievably fresh and succulent. When paired with fresh dollops of soft, rich ricotta, my tastebuds were jumping for joy. I've also had the pleasure of trying their red pie which I think is just as solid. I've thrown on all sorts of toppings--mushrooms, sausage, basil, mozzarella, artichoke, garlic--they're all great. The pies here are also ginormous. My Asian eyes may not be very large, but believe me when I say they bug out every time my pie gets delivered to my table. It never ceases to surprise me. You could easily feed 5 with a large pie, but of course, if I were you, I wouldn't want to share my pie either. What could possibly be wrong with BAR then, you ask? My gripe with BAR stems from the fact that their crust is not crust. True, there are all kinds of pizza, but I would like to think there's a minimum crust thickness that should be observed in order to be deserving of the title. The crust at BAR is so thin that by the time the pizza is served to you, the center of the crust has become sodden. As a result you have to eat your pizza with a fork and knife which is a whole lot less fun than eating with my hands. The parts of the pizza that aren't soggy are the edge pieces, but even these have started to yield to the moisture from the various sauces and toppings. A workaround could be to choose the white pie only (garlic, oil and mozz) which is lower in terms of moisture content and to avoid any juicy toppings like mushrooms or tomatoes and to instead go for herbs or crispy bacon, but that eliminates half the menu!! It is for this reason that BAR gets a 4.5 from me. I love going for its toppings and the ambience, but the wet flatbread that I'm served is not pizza!! If they would just double the amount of dough they used, they'd end up with a 1/8" thick crust which would still be thin enough to cook quickly while thick enough to hold itself together and to please a picky pizza eater like me. :) read more

I am 64 years old and have lived in New Haven all my life. Over the years, I have frequented numerous and many bars, restaurants and eating establishments in our city. I've never felt compelled to write a review like this, but there is a first time for everything. We were at Bar last night to celebrate my daughter's 29th birthday. Her older sister made reservations for 7:30 pm. We were seated and served our meal. There were 9 of us-my wife and I, our 2 daughters, a few of their female colleagues and my daughter's fiancé. The waitress was pleasant and food was decent. Around 9 pm, things changed. Another BAR staff member came and told us, rather aggressively, we had the table until 9:30 and that we needed to start preparing to leave. We had our drinks and were serving birthday cake at the time. It wasn't that there was another party coming in at 9:30 for a second seating; they were going to be physically removing the table from in front of us and freeing the area up for other patrons to mingle there I guess. 15 minutes later, another aggressive demand that we start to clean up, remove our belongings and go. Waitstaff began to remove our unfinished drinks from right in front of us! Drinks that we had paid for! We were flabbergasted. The whole thing was almost becoming surreal! We stated the obvious. That we were finishing up our birthday party. We further indicated that when reservation was made, we were never told that at 9:30 the table in front of us or the chairs we were sitting on would, quite literally be removed and we would be forced out of that particular location within the restaurant. And then it almost got scary! No less than 4 large security guards quickly arrived at the table! They told us, rather aggressively again, to leave the specific area in question immediately, or they would remove us! This a party of 7 ladies, a young man and a 64 year old man. Absolutely one of the worst experiences in my entire life. I will never patronize that establishment again. I will share my unpleasant experience with all friends, relatives and acquaintances. Pizza and beer are two of my favorite things BUT pizza and a brewery all under one roof and I am definately in my happy place. I am sorry to admit that over the weekend was my first time at BAR (as Vincent T. notes - the hipper cousin of the other pizza establishments in the New Haven area) to meet a group of friends for a drink and a bite. We had a bit of the wait so we headed to the bar area where we grabbed a drink. They have a variety of their "house beers" on tap as well as an extensive tap list of other local (and non local) breweries. One of my friends is not a beer drinker but she was happy with the wine list (offered as Red 1, 2, 3, etc). It did not take long before our table was ready and we were brought into the dining room that doubles as their "tank room". The lighting was a bit low and could cause problems for people with bad vision but we were able to browse the menu with the help of our phone flashlights. The menu is not flashy - it's a pizza restaurant and with the exception of their BAR salad (which I highly recommend) that is all that is on their menu. BUT don't think that they have "Specialty Pies" on the menu because they don't. Just a long and overflowing list of ingredients for you to create your own. When ordering keep in mind that the crust is not think but thin and cooked at a high heat. The more toppings the heavier the pie - making it possible to lose your slice before it gets to your plate. Yes - we did make that mistake (so many toppings, so little time) but no slice was lost, I can assure you of that. I definately recommend this place as part of New Haven's pizza trail - thin crust and fresh ingredients - just make sure you come with your appetite as the pies are served on cookie sheets. read more

Went back to BAR after we couldn't get a table at Sally's. I had the lobster pie and it was superb. Huge chunks of lobster with a great lemon butter sauce. Best pizza I had the whole trip. My friend had the anchovy pie but it had too many anchovies and the pizza was so salty it was almost inedible. Overall though great pizza and this time I move them ahead of Pepe. read more

This place has some of the best pizza that I've ever had, and that is saying a lot because I don't tend to choose pizza as my go to food. We had the Mashed potato & bacon pizza, eggplant Parm, and Mexican street corn. All the pizzas were amazing and so delicious but my favorite was the Mexican street corn which is a white pie with grilled corn, queso fresco, crushed Taki's. Unfortunately, we ate so quickly that I didn't get a chance to take any photos. Aside from that, this place has a very chill and hip vibe. They serve pizzas on paper plates and the place has an area that turns into a club after 10 pm or so. First time at Bar. Saw it was recommend on sites for pizza. Decided to check it out. First there is a parking lot across from Bar but if it fills up they will close it. And there is outdoor and indoor seating. As we read on their site they were known for their mashed potato and bacon bits pizza. I would say do not get that pizza. If you're there for pizza stay away from that specialty pizza. It really wasn't that great In my opinion. It was more of a gimmick pizza. Not great. Maybe get a regular cheese or something with actual sauce and cheese. There beer sampler though was fantastic. They have some great beer to taste and I would recommend getting it. read more

We went to BAR which is the favorite of most of the college kids (we were told) in town. The pizza there was pretty good, they're famous for their mashed potato and bacon pizza.One note on BAR, they're a little too hip for their own good sometimes, and they lack in some of the soft skills. I.e. their hostess was too cool for school. Honestly, it wasn't for me. I couldn't really get past the bizarre flavor of potatoes on the pizza, it would've been better had the potato been sliced thinly than as mashed potatoes. But the mashed potatoes were also just mealy also, all in all disappointed in that toppings choice. But we ordered a second pizza, as one does normally, with more traditional toppings and the end results were heavenly. The crust was cooked well, but I tend to still find it comical that any place calls itself an Italian pizza shop. Pizza's in the States across the board have too much sauce, too much cheese, and too much toppings creating an end result that is overpowering. True Italian cooking is: less equals more, American commercial Italian cooking is: more more more. Don't get me wrong, BAR's pizza is perfectly fine, in fact it's really good. New Haven is known for pizza. We have been to several pizza places but BAR is by far the best. Plan on waiting for a table most evenings. It is worth it. There are so many choices of toppings and you can make any combination of the choices. We never seem to order enough even though we think we have plenty when placing the order. Be confident, order that extra pie, if you don't finish it you can bring it home. Our most recent visit we ordered plain, mashed potato and bacon and the last pie had artichokes.. Went to bar recently to do some birthday celebrating. We were able to reserve a table being that we were such a large group so that was super sweet! We ordered a bunch of pizzas. All delicious!! Of course we had to have mashed potato and bacon, which is their speciality. The best! The only issue with bar pizza is it is super thin, much thinner than the other pizza greats in town so if you load up on toppings the slices have a hard time keeping up. After a certain hour the back area turns into a full blown night club with some pretty sweet lighting fixtures that pulsate with the music. Last night we came to BAR & this place is hands down my fav pizza spot I've been to. We live in NYC & seek out pizza everywhere we go. A friend recommended BAR, particularly their Mashed Potato Pizza. Never have I ever had such a crunch to a slice!! Everything about this slice was unbelievable! From the dollops of potatoes (instead of just slathering it all over every bite) to the seasoning. Highly recommended pie! The door guy was super friendly & our waiter was awesome! Bar is known for serving one of the best pizzas in the area, and I must say they do! I've been to BAR on numerous occasions and have tried a number of pizzas from here. They offer a selection of local beers along with a variety of mixed drinks. The massive thin crust pizza is served on a full sized cookie sheet with fresh ingredients and a super crispy crust. The most popular pizza here is the mashed potato and bacon pizza served white or red, in which I prefer the white. I usually opt for that or the pepperoni pizza which are both delicious. On my last visit I tried something new which was the buffalo chicken pizza which I wasn't a huge fan of. There was no blue cheese on the pizza and the buffalo sauce didn't have the kick I was looking for in it. On my last visit me and my fiance sat at the bar to avoid the wait for the table. We received our drinks and pizza fairly quickly by taking this option. Keep in mind when going to this spot between Thursday and Sunday nights you could expect a long wait.
