I will say, I was a bit hesitant about Bar Nena based on some of the Yelp reviews. Added to that, I asked them if I could bring a cake for my friend's bday and they told me there was a $25 cutting fee and it must be a plant based cake. I've heard of cutting fees (which I also have thoughts about) but specifying what type of cake was just silly to me. I would understand if they said no peanuts due to allergies. Anywho, on to the experience. Overall, the bar felt very uptight from the moment you arrive and have to go through a velvet rope to walk down cement stairs. The customer service was just a bit lacking. I wouldn't say they were rude but they definitely weren't friendly and you could tell they didn't want you to stay long. Which is not how patrons should be treated. This also wasn't just my sentiments, I observed people enter the bar and not enjoy themselves and leave without ordering. All of the people I was with also shared my sentiments and had their own qualms. Some positives, I appreciated the thought and storytelling that went into the menu. I had the película drink and it was actually very good. The Latin music and decor were also on point. But I unfortunately wouldn't go back.

We started at Jajaja Mexicana right upstairs and had the: Watermelon tostadas 10/10 Buffalo cauliflower taco10/10 Quesobirria 9/10 Almond horchata 8/10 Everything was delicious. I'm not vegan and I loved all the dishes. I was served by server nickname: "Dudu" ( I think his full name was Eduardo) who was very personable. Then we had a blast downstairs in the bar Nena. I bumped into the Manager Brian who took his time finding a mezcal that worked well for my cousin's taste ( he loved it). He even went the extra mile and took my coat for me and then found us a more fitting table for our bigger group. He was super accommodating. Highly recommend both locations, and would definitely return.

Bar Nena is the new speakeasy of Jajaja in WV with a fun sexy vibe (disco ball, louder music, dark lights, and red velvet couches)- perfect for a girls night or date. I came for a girls night on Friday, and my friend had a reservation. The velvet ropes at the entrance is a bit gimmicky, but the employees working at the entrance were super nice and friendly. For the main event: drinks! We each got two- I got the Pelicula and the Mi Horchata. The Pelicula was my favorite w/ popcorn infused tequila and a little side of popcorn garnish (a tad stale lol but still cute). It tasted like a popcorn-flavored prnstar martini- delicious! The Mi Horchata is a dairy-free version of alcoholic Horchata, which was great for my dairy-allergy friend to try a sip. I will say it was a bit watery for me, didn't have that delicious creaminess I associate with Horchata. My friend got the Para Los Nubes (refreshing), and Infiel (jackfruit-infused and unique). Service was fine downstairs, but they did get a bit busy around 10 pm.

I love this spot! The drinks are on point. My favorites were the Para las Nubes (who doesn't love a plant-based milk punch?) and the Infiel (where else can you find a jackfruit infused tequila cocktail?). The food is delicious - perfect light bites to pair along with the drinks. Our server Keren walked us through the menu and gave great recommendations. The music is always great and the dark lighting creates a super romantic vibe that is awesome for a date. Can't wait to go back!

Great spot to grab crafted cocktails and bites in WV! Vibes are immaculate. Love this spot for a date night or girls night out.

Host was a bit rude when I asked about empty bar seats after she shared that the bar was full for reservations for the rest of the night.

The staff were very hospitable and helpful, giving suggestions on what to order and telling us about some of the preparation, like the brine for the fried chicken that incorporates tea for flavour. We had the Caviar Tater Tots ($29), which were tasty and a fun concept, but I thought a little pricey. We shared the fried chicken ($36), which I also thought was high, even for Tribeca. I wish there had been more than two hushpuppies, which I enjoyed. The fried chicken was very juicy and I liked the spices used in the coating. My friend was celebrating her birthday, which I told the manager about on the D.L. He had the waitress bring a big piece of the bread pudding and put a candle in it. My friend was completely surprised and chuffed. The bread pudding was dense, but not heavy and delicious. It reminded us a little of kugel. I appreciated them gifting the dessert: a very thoughtful gesture. I'd like to go back to try a cocktail, the crab dip and the lobster roll (but preferably with someone else picking up the tab).

It delivered on both fronts, but I really was blown away by the wine. The sheer quantity of available wines is really impressive, and the sommelier was able to recommend a rare wine that fit our interests (a fantastic, effervescent, creamy Txakoli that had lovely fruit and minerals). Later, I tried amazing ice cider. The food rundown: -Sesame pizza Bianca: complimentary bread! This was very good and quite sizable. The bottom is entirely encrusted with sesame. -Scallop crudo (rhubarb, shiso): very good and the plating was gorgeous. Meaty scallops with tangy and pungent flavors. -Snowdance chicken (spinach, sherry, thyme): Super tender, crispy-skinned chicken in a savory sherry sauce. -Sea bass (asparagus, hollandaise): I was surprised at how remarkably well this dish worked. The asparagus was so good with the rich, buttery sauce. Definitely a smaller portion, but the chicken was huge so it balanced out. -Potatoes with ramps: Yum. Served hashbrown-style and the ramps were added as little sauce dollops. I loved the space, and by that I mean the ambience and also the literal amount of space we had to ourselves. We got to stretch out in a roomy corner booth. The room featured a lot of exposed brick and grey and utilitarian ceilings, but it manages to be cozy all the same.

Unfortunately, the food never really lived up to the setting. The meal started with the scallops with sweet corn and espelette. They were fine, which ended up being one of the more positive assessments of the night. My father had the Peekytoe crab with peach and brioche, which was also okay. My mother had the Norwich Meadows carrots with yogurt and carrot-top pesto, and that was where the meal started feeling flat. Nothing was technically offensive, but there was very little excitement or depth to the plate. Portions were consistently small, which became harder to ignore as the meal went on. For mains, my father ordered the heritage pork sausage with shrimp, Jimmy Nardello peppers and cilantro. The dish only really came together when you got the sausage and pepper in the same bite, but there was very little of it, and on its own the sausage was not especially compelling. I ordered the Snowdance chicken with spinach, sherry and thyme, which is apparently one of the restaurant's signature dishes. My father and I switched halfway through because he liked the chicken more than I did. I found it surprisingly weak: essentially a pounded chicken preparation that was bland, average and nowhere near what I would expect from a signature entrée at this price. My mother had the housemade bucatini with zucchini, Tarentaise and mint. It was strange rather than satisfying, and none of us particularly liked it. Service was much better than the food. Our server was good, and the secondary service was even better. They did forget one of my father's drinks, but replaced it without issue. I still left 22% because the kitchen's problems were not the server's fault. Dessert finally produced the best dish of the night: the mascarpone with phyllo, cinnamon caramel and lemon pistachios. That was genuinely good. I then figured I would order the cheese because, at minimum, how badly can you mess up cheese? The answer was not badly, exactly, but absurdly. The "cheese and crackers" course was two small pieces of Appalachian cheese for the table. Two pieces. For three people. That pretty much captured the meal. The restaurant has obvious Gramercy Tavern DNA in its restraint, seasonal ingredients and minimalist plating, but this felt like a much less successful version of that philosophy. When this style works, simplicity feels precise and confident. Here, too often, it just felt sparse, underdeveloped and expensive. For three people, with appetizers, entrées, three cocktails, one glass of wine, dessert, cheese and tip, the total came to roughly $472. At that price, "fine" is not enough.
