Hunter S.

First, let me say the service was great. My server was as helpful as he possibly could be, and didn't neglect me in any way. But the food and drink are where things fell off. Maybe my expectations were off for this spot. It sells itself as "the hottest Mexican cocktail bar in the city." I wasn't even expecting all that. I just thought I would have some great tequila or mezcal drinks and maybe some great latin food. But I was super underwhelmed. I had the carne asada to the tune of 45 dollars. Sold as grilled gras fed Angus NY strip, it was under seasoned and fatty with no char. Pretty chewy. The frites were underwhelming as well. They were super standard and possibly frozen. They were hot and crispy, but they were not 45 dollar frites. Please note that the in-house menu prices are different than the online prices (I get it, inflation/capitalism). The online price for the carne asada was 35. Perhaps I would have enjoyed the roasted avocado cilantro pesto (shiitake mushrooms, baby veggies and chipotle aioli) better. Or the organic black beans and veggies. Or maybe small plates are the way to go, with basics such as chicken or steak quesadillas. The cocktails were ok. I had Tommy's margarita, made only with tequila, agave, and lime juice. I asked my server which would be best, Tommy's or the el Classico. He said the el Classico was sweeter, so be aware. I think I had another cocktail as well, but it wasn't memorable. From the photos, it appears to be something garnished with mint, though I can't find anything on the menu served with mint. There are some basil drinks, so maybe they subbed. I remember discussing the lalaldies (blanco tequila, apple liquor, fresh basil, lemon) with my server. The other recommendation I considered from my server was pine and passion, made with mezcal, pineapple juice, lemon juice, and passion fruit. So maybe it was one of those. I wavered between three and four stars because for one, service was great. Two, it wasn't crowded and it was easy to get in. But ultimately, there are so many better Mexican/Latin places in the city, with a better cocktail program to boot. Ultimately I went with three stars when I realized I wouldn't return.

Strong drinks, excellent service and such understated lovely decor! Stopped in on a whim with a friend on a Sunday night and sat at the bar. Had a Wolfpack and a Ritmo de Amore, the former being my favorite. If you're a fan of mezcal, this is your spot! The bartender knew his stuff and took great care of us. Next time I stop by, I'm definitely getting something to eat.

The service is great. The food is delicious. I am ordering a taco trio but just had the salmon appetizer and it was delicious. This place feels authentic and playing fun Mexican music :)

Very tiny and hard to find place. Reminds me of all the hidden bars nobody knows, which makes it fun. Drinks were amazing, and scenery was dark. Very good chips and salsa while you drink the night away.

Got to visit this little bar recently few weeks ago with my boyfriend before he went on a trip. He recommended this place so I was pretty excited since I've never been! They specialize in quality tequila and mezcal! The entrance is somewhat hidden and I almost walked past it. From the entrance there is a tiny patio and down the stairs little cute bar area. Down stairs is the bathroom and up stairs is larger seating! We got the Pine and Passion and Spicy Rabbit!, along with beef quesadilla and some guacamole. The drink menu eat the time was limited but I believe they will have their entire menu again soon with 40+ drinks! The Spicy Rabbit was delicious and packed full of flavor. On the sweeter side but very unique cause it's made out of carrot liquor! Pine and passion super refreshing and another great choice if you don't want spicy. The guacamole and beef quesadilla were delicious as well. Earlier that day I had invited a few friends to join us who both said no, but then suddenly turned up. The maya mezcal wasn't too busy and was super nice to re seat us upstairs since we ended up with 7 people total. My friends ordered the grilled avocado, chicken and more guacamole. All dishes were delicious. Grilled avocado was definitely a first and very interesting, but chicken was definitely better lol. I had such a great time I brought my brother for quick drink who was visiting New York later that week. He loved the spicy rabbit as well and had a great time chatting with bartender. Overall a solid bar and cute date spot. Will def be back to try their other drinks and food! Definitely recommend this place for anything from quick drinks, dinner, date to girls night!

We love mezcal and this place has a decent selection. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable. I loved the atmosphere and authenticity! We got a flight of mezcal and a few other things.

This place is a hidden gem. We stopped next door at the Beetle House for drinks then left to venture off for food and didn't have to go too far! Our bartender Alex took great care of us and was such a pleasure to talk to. Very dark and intimate setting. I wasn't expecting such a 5 star experience. Definitely check it out!

Try the Silver Fox cocktail - ask for Manu! They hand make their simple syrups and infused mezcals.

Had the most amazing time and cocktails here - ask for Manu from San Francisco! His cocktails are amazing and balanced and he'll give great advice on what to choose from their impressive menu!

It's a romantic, hidden gem that has good service and can work for groups or couples. I finally tried it with two friends for dinner. I thought everything was ok for food and drinks but I could find better flavors and prices for the neighborhood. If you need someplace on a Sat and don't have a reservation, you might get lucky here.

Everything was great but not the best in the world at the same time. Our service was a bit slow, but the bunny drink and the pina mezcal cocktail definitely earned their hype!

Been here twice and will be coming back! First visit here was spontaneous. A friend had this place bookmarked on Yelp and we were in the area, so we decided to check it out. We were a group of five and luckily were pretty much able to get a table right away on a Saturday night. The place was fairly packed. Also came here on a Thursday evening and there were plenty of tables open. Their drinks menu is creative and amazing. I always enjoy my cocktails here.

We wanted to have after-dinner cocktails in a chill space, so we searched on our phones & saw Paradise Lost address via Google. We proceeded to walk down & was unable to find the establishment due to their being no front sign. After walking back & forth a few times, we saw another group walking towards the door & they confirmed the place. We walked inside the front door pressed a "doorbell" & lo & behold we gained entry after the previous group went inside. Definitely an incognito entrance. Once inside that door there is someone to greet you, & take your information. There is a forest/ grass/ jungle-looking foyer/ hallway we walked down to get to the next door. Before we knew it, we were near the "Paradise Lost No Vacancy" neon sign w/ an arrow pointing towards the snake-shaped knob door. It gets opened & a supercool speakeasy awaits.... Paradise Lost has mixed style table / seating arrangements throughout the place. A bar seating section, booth-style seating area, lounge- style seating area, etc. We got there a little after 7pm, so the afterwork crowd was in full swing. Paradise Lost has interesting atmosphere. At times a Gothic / Medieval Vibe, meets place w/ shipwreck decor, meets eleganct /club vibe w/ beautiful ceiling lighting, etc. Music played in the background. Staff are friendly, energetic, & attentive. We were pleasantly overwhelmed w/ the vast selection of tiki cocktails that were on the menu. Paradise Lost also have an intimate selection of snacks/ food menu items. This included Popcorn, Tater Tots, Devilled Eggs Rangoon Dip, etc. We ordered some cocktails served in unique tiki mugs & a bucket of popcorn to munch on w/ our drinks. The popcorn is flavored w/ Sea Buckthorn & Browm Butter, which gave it an special flavor profile. Our cocktails were well-prepared & nice & strong. Paradise Lost has individual unisex bathroom stalls & a communal vanity & sink area. The bathroom stalls have spooky voices coming from a speaker as you use the bathroom. I was so humorously taken aback, it had me laughing when I came out...Definitely a different thing to experience in the bathroom - lol. Before we left we watched one of the bartenders do a cocktail "fire" presentation for some patrons in a booth seated area. Wow.... Paradise Lost accepts walk-ins only, no reservations. Paradise Lost accepts groups of 8 or less, unless you are requesting to book the space for a private event. Ages 21+ paradiselost.nyc @paradiselostnyc Paradise Lost is open everyday - 5pm-2am.

Would definitely recommend to visit if you like gothic stuff and tiki bars.

Serious attitude here. The cocktails were very tasty but the service and vibe were so off-putting,…read moreI will never go back. I made a reservation in person more than 24 hours in advance. I wanted to treat an old friend to a quick birthday toast before a show she was attending nearby. Later that night, another friend became available to join but, because they do not actually have a phone that takes calls (only offers an announcement to go to Resy or email) adding another person was not at all easy. I would have had to cancel and rebook and wasn't sure I'd be able to (reservation was for a Saturday night) In most places, a table for 3 easily accommodates 4. But not here. When two of us arrived, they made it clear this was a big problem. I would have walked out right then but I would have been charged $90! We decided to stay and make the best of it, which was a challenge. For a speakeasy, the vibe was aggressive, not relaxing. Very loud music and not great acoustics.) Too cramped to be comfortable, proving that small does not necessarily mean cozy! We asked if we could take a chair from the table next to us, which was empty (it was only 6 pm; I told our server we'd be gone by 7 because my friend, the birthday girl, had to catch a show.) We were told No! To say the waiter was cold, unfriendly, and indifferent is generous. He was totally rude. He literally told my friend she couldn't sit in a chair that was otherwise empty, knowing we'd be leaving momentarily. Then he had the gail to hand me the bill with a 22% tip pre-selected...and watched over me while I signed it! Definitely the least satisfying $100 I have ever spent. Disappointing. It was good to see my friends, but I so wish I hadn't picked this place. Never again.

Dim lighting, plush seating, rich wood + wallpaper details, and that lounge-library vibe make the place feel like a secret hideout right in the middle of Midtown. It's moody, cozy, and effortlessly intimate -- perfect for a date night, a chill catch-up, or just a night out with good drinks. Nice service, too! However: be ready for the price tag. The cocktails are absolutely beautiful -- well crafted, creative, and flavorful -- but each one will remind you that you're not exactly paying dive-bar prices. It's worthwhile, but the "overpriced drinks" vibe absolutely hits. That said: the interior design and ambience are amazing. The mix of antique-meets-modern decor, low lighting, and comfy couches gives you that classic speakeasy romance. If you appreciate aesthetics and vibe over cheap drinks -- this is your spot. If you want a night out that feels deliberate and special rather than casual and cheap -- Osamil Upstairs delivers.
