Before it became Bar Métier, it was Bar Marilou. Despite my hotel being across the street, the obscure entrance made it so that my first time here was simply circling around the block trying to figure out how to get in. Speakeasy vibes were appreciated and the scene here was good enough for a date night and excellent for a group meet up. Cocktails were the name of the game and they were mighty potent. Every drink was beautiful, and the names along with the ingredients were creative and thoughtful, making this a bonafide nightlife destination. Parking was a challenge, but this is often the case with just about any establishment in New Orleans. At the very least, the service was friendly, and the prices were always just a tad higher than the average imbibe spot. It was thankfully never too crowded, but a weight was always possible. If you're looking for a sexy, vibey speakeasy--this is the one for you! To get to the speakeasy, you'll walk through a whimsical, garden-like atmosphere. Upon entering, you're greeted by friendly staff. I recommend making reservations, as this place books up quickly. We had a late-night reservation, which was perfect for a nightcap. The bar is a bit dark for my taste, but I understand they're going for a specific vibe--and they nail it. It's honestly one of the most beautiful bars I've ever been to. I love a good book bar with a speak easy vibe! The server was funny but very sweet. She was a bit flighty though and we had to remind her about a few things. This place is a whole vibe! We luckily snagged a table at the last minute bc we walked in and another table chose to get up and leave their reservation. We were walking out and the hostess/manager both chased us down and said they'd be happy to seat us as a table for two just opened up. Yay! Service was excellent, we snuck in a food order 5 minutes before the kitchen stopped serving it, and the mocktails were delish! The inside is moody and red and beautiful. No details overlooked - looks like a vintage library/office/speakeasy. Candles everywhere, cool lighting fixtures and art, love love love. The food menu was a bit lacking for anyone trying to eat "healthy" or light on red meat. Think burgers, bone marrow, etc. We chose the fry bread with honey butter - SOOOO good. Must get. Scallops and a burger. The scallops were $28 and you only got three tiny tiny scallops. Not worth the price and I was still hungry. Burger was $20 and didn't come with a side. Blatant discrimination at this establishment. I found out about Bar Métier from the lovely reviews here. I planned on having a quick drink before going to Preservation Hall to celebrate my 40th birthday, as an out of towner. The older Black lady Hostess told me the speak easy was only available for hotel guests. I said "Oh! There was no indications of that online." So I left yet felt suspicious as she felt cold, unkind. Mind you I'm dressed beautiful, semi- modest: long white lace skirt with shorts underneath, a champagne colored corset, with an antique lace shrug underneath, clear heels. Many people complimented my outfit throughout the day. I addressed her with due respect, fully sober. There was zero physical or behavioral red flags from my end. I see a group of young white girls walk in, I ask them if they'd been there before & if they are guests. They say they've been there many times never as hotel guests. I say something is fishy & describe my experience. One girl comes back out after being seated telling me there were plenty of tables opened. I decide to confront the lady, calmly cooly. I tell her " I know you let those girls in but not me, why?" She says the Speak Easy is for hotel guests only but not the tables outside. I tell her she never offered me a table outside, that she is a liar, and factually discriminated against me before wishing her the day she deserved. That old lady is a lying, unprofessional, unkind individual and needs to be reprimanded for her nasty conduct. She's around 5'8'', in her late 50s-60s, light skinned, age marks/ moles, has her hair covered, and apparently hates her own kind. Even my Uber driver confirmed it's untrue the Bar Métier only serves hotel guests before encouraging me to speak out. I had an amazing rest of my birthday night about town- just had to illuminate this skullduggery. Unless management publicly condones her behavior this Hostess is a direct representation of Bar Métier's values. Trashy, classless, dishonest, unprofessional, racial discrimination. And a few other 1 star reviewed echo the similar sentiments. Do better!!!! read more

We were so excited to try the place. But our experience just didn't match the hype. The first night they were full, but they were nice to share a couple alternatives close by. Came here for a quick late dinner as there aren't many dinner options around after like 10pm Food and drinks were fine - not amazing, and not bad. Seemed fair for the price. I got a cocktail that was Japanese whiskey based - I remember their cocktails being more spirit forward a few years ago; this one seemed weak. I ate the duck breast which was fine, sort of small and on some grains. None of the flavors were notable. Service was horrible. They have this sign that says wait outside until a hostess comes to you. I just went inside as it was cold outside and they wanted me to step back outside just to ask what kind of seating we wanted - seemed like a power trip formality. When I was seated, it took forever to get a menu, and place my order. The only quick thing was getting the check Came on a night where there was live music. I really wanted to like Bar Marilou. We walked from our hotel on Canal street to Bar Marilou, it was not a long walk as the weather was enjoyable. As others have stated look to the left as the entrance to Bar Marilou is in a courtyard. The courtyard is a great place for pictures. So what went wrong. Many things went wrong as upon arrival we were greeted by a host that informed us that their CC machine was down so it was only cash or other cash application. Also even though it was early, we went before 6pm and there was only one other group, most of the place was reserved!! The only place available to sit was a couple of small tables in the back. We decided to sit have 1 drink as our cash situation was low and then left after an hour. This place is cute but the drinks are expensive and the host and servers are not friendly. Bar Marilou, where have you been all my life (in New Orleans, at least)? This bijou lounge is filled with red velvet, plush seating arranged into little nooks and books. And cocktails and wine. So many of my favorite things in one place, it's almost as if it's made for Yours, Truly. It's small enough to feel intimate but not so small that you can't count on getting seated (do make resos if you can, but I bet you can be accommodated depending on the day/hour). I love that it's tucked back from the street: enter a little vine-filled alleyway to wait for someone to come out and greet you. They have a small food menu (sadly not very vegan-friendly) and a creative cocktail menu. I stuck to sparkling rosé which lent itself well for the decadent vibes. Give me Champagne, red velvet, good conversation... add in being surrounded by books and it's pretty much all I ever need in life. read more

Once seated bartender 1 a lady was miserable. Tried asking her a few questions on what was good and I have never been so dismissed. Bartender 2 came up to service and he was just as bad. Would ask what was good what wasn't and again dismissed as if I had done soemthing to him. Then these 2 went on to talk trash abt another customer in front of us again as if i didn't exist. This is the worst service, I couldn't drink my drink fast enough and get the hell out of there. Just awful ! next time in town definitely won't be going there or recommend and anyone to go there. Because it looks like those 2 bartenders are perm employees by the other photos posted. And to top it all off I was charged 2x doubling the drink and the tip that I wish I hadn't left. But immediately walking up to this bar, I already knew it was going to be amazing. Man this place is awesome! We found this from a food tour, and it was an excellent recommendation. It was billed as a bar in a library, which is the most amazing thing ever in my wife's imagination. However, it wasn't really a library... it was a wall of books that serves as a secret entrance FROM the hotel nearby. The cocktails are stellar, and the bar manager was super sweet! It is tucked away down an alley from Maison de la Luz, and you better call ahead. It has a great atmosphere, but limited seating! However, we showed up early, and were escorted to a seat! It's easy to miss, the green walkway taking you back from the larger buildings in the front. The bar is in what was an old library, and is connected to what is now a hotel through a "secret" set of rooms, hidden behind a bookcase on the bar side. The ambiance is classic glamour, large bookshelves and velvet seating, with low lighting. They have fancy, craft cocktails, points to you if you know all the ingredients. While not a full meal menu, they have snacks type, small plate items. Everything is is excellent, with a high price point, and high on character.
