This was a nice place to chill after checking into our room at the International House Hotel. In fact, this is their stylish hotel bar next to the lobby, so after we checked in and took a much-needed power nap, Jamie W and I felt it was time for a cocktail to kick off our weekend in New Orleans. Still a bit jet lagged, I'm glad we stuck around since the online reviews looked promising. Even though they had seating areas available, we just sat at the front end of the bar. There was a menu of carefully curated craft cocktails which impressed us with their meticulous detail (Photo 5). The bartender was patiently describing the ones that piqued our interest the most. Jamie ordered the $17 Moon Goddess, a tantalizing Senegalese-inspired tall drink mixing gin, sherry, almond, coconut water, and moon bitters (Photo 10). The hibiscus sugar rim lent a tropical sweetness that was welcome in the midst of a brisk autumn. I went for a jazzier libation, the $17 Barons Thirst, a throat-warming blend of bourbon, rum, sherry, passionfruit, coffee, and lime (Photo 8). With Haitian roots, it came amusingly with a lit cinnamon "cigar" that served as a swizzle stick. Both provided potent flavors, so we decided to have an alcohol-free second round, refreshing $10 Coco Margaritas with non-alcoholic mezcal, coconut, and lime (Photo 9). It was a nice introduction to our Nawlins night. My brother was staying at the International House Hotel, where this bar is located inside of. For his stay at the hotel, they gave him 2 complimentary drink tokens for the bar. We went on a week night and there was a decent-sized crowd already there. We put our drink orders in and found a spot on one of the couches. I'm not sure of the bartender's name, but he did a great job on our drinks. (We both decided on French 75s.) Was here a few years ago to meet up with a friend, didn't save it so couldn't for the life of me remember where it was. Happily found it again this Mardi gras/Fat Tuesday night and was more than pleasantly surprised. Eric(k)? A quiet and cozy spot to enjoy a good drink. However the service was extremely lacking and slow from the bartender that served us. This individual was both rude and condescending despite respect being given to him from members our party. The bar tender would blatantly become avoidant to providing service and focused solely on bantering with his coworker, appearing upset when patrons signaled for drinks. Vibe is more upscale without any snooty vibes (romantic lighting, cozy and comfy seating). It's attached to the lobby which smells like essential oils. I only had the French 75 here which was OK. This bar is a remarkable gem, with a menu and staff that set it apart. I stepped down from my room to enjoy a cocktail, and shortly found myself sipping a chanterelle infused French 75. Had I not talked with the manager, Alan, about his careful sous vide process, I might not have been tempted to try it. I was not disappointed; the buttery mushroom was subtle, like a plush velvet rug. Each drink, poured from bottles familiar and otherwise, is served in an eclectic glass. Loa Bar is definitely a cool place to have a cocktail in New Orleans but the inside is just so dark and I could barely see what's on the menu, the decoration or even to admire the colour of my drinks. The drinks we ordered were A-OK, easily on the palate as most of them has fruit and herbs as part of the ingredients especially from the Today, Tomorrow and Always list. The velvet covered seats are quite comfy and the dim atmosphere is perfect if you on a date. I won't consider Loa Bar as a destination but it is ok if you are in the area and looking for a night cap. This is such a hip and trendy bar! I met my friend out for a drink and I'm so happy she suggested Loa Bar. This place is perfect if you're looking for a bar that does speciality cocktails and has a fun but intimate vibe. Honestly, it could be described more as a sexy ambiance with their dim lighting that strategically uses Edison bulbs and tons of candles throughout the bar. Definitely a great spot for a date but also works for meeting up with friends. I will say, though I love this bar, be prepared to wait and be patient. I came on a Saturday night and it was busy especially with some people trickling in after a wedding. But the wait is worth it! And honestly we only waited because we had a large order of their speciality cocktails which can be more complicated than your average well drink. The drinks I remembered trying were the honeycomb old fashioned, Atalanta and dandelion root cocktail and they were all wonderful! They do offer more than just their speciality cocktails, but why go here and not try out what they do best? And just an FYI, Loa bar is located within the International Hotel, so don't be fooled if you're following your GPS and it leads you to the hotel. read more

It's been way too long since the last time I've been to Loa. When I worked downtown it was a great place to meet friends after work. I was staying at the International House Hotel this past weekend so Loa was a must! I was happy to see two of the best bartenders in town! Carmine and Nick! Look no further, run to Loa lol! Always a sexy, classy, upscale vibe! Ask about their homemade lemoncello! What a welcomed treat. The lemons are imported from out of the country and you'll have to ask Carmine about the rest! So many fun memories were had at Loa this weekend that the list is too long to write. I've been interested in tequila recently, and what ever I had on the rocks with lime went down very smoothly! It has been quite a while since we have been there and last night was absolutely not what we remembered. We stopped in for a drink and ordered 2 drinks. A Prosecco and Chambord and a Vodka Martini. Well the Bartender was less than friendly as I observed her with a few patrons (2 of which walked out). The drinks were in a word Terrible. Loa is cozy, effortless, artistic, and timeless. My two girlfriends and I stopped into Loa on our way to dinner and we are still talking about it days later. Alan is a modern day guru: his menu is inspired and his energy will make you feel like you are drinking cocktails made specifically for you. The wife and I appreciate a well-made cocktail. After trusted friends of ours highly recommended that we check out Loa, we added it to our list of stops while we were in town. Our friends weren't wrong. We enjoyed it so much; we went there on back-to-back days, Saturday and Sunday. Located just off of the lobby of the International House Hotel, Loa possessed a cool vibe. The bar was dimly lit, much of it coming from strategically placed candles, which gave it the look and feel of a voodoo priest's lair especially with its extensive collection of bottles of all shapes and sizes containing spirits, housemade infusions, syrups, bitters, and tinctures. On the first night, I had the Christmas with an Ex ($11) made with rye, Italian vermouth, and ancho chili and chocolate liqueurs. On the second night, I had the Toasted Wild Birdseed Old Fashioned ($12) made with Evan Williams Single Barrel and mole bitters and the English Turn ($12) made with rye, aged Old Tom gin, grapefruit and Meyer lemon, dry cherry and Crème de Noisette liqueurs. All of the cocktails I had were delicious, booze forward, but balanced effectively showcasing the complex combinations of flavors. However, in my small sample size of Loa's daily changing menu of cocktails, I thought the Christmas with an Ex stood out among the outstanding drinks I had at Loa and it was my favorite drink of our entire New Orleans trip. Service matched the excellent cocktails. Alan, who was behind the bar on Sunday, was an exceptional host. Loa was the most pleasant surprise of our weekend trip to New Orleans. It should be on any cocktail-lover's list as a "can't miss" stop in New Orleans. read more

I just adore hotel bars and even if Loa Bar isn't as grand as one of my favorites, the King Cole Room at the St. Regis (their bar snacks are macademia nuts), their cocktails are in fact, possibly better. I've spent many an hour in a hotel bar that gets away with expensive, but mediocre cocktails. Loa's bartenders are at the top of their craft and you'll get a drink that's on par with any that you'd get at, say Cure or Tonique. Check out all the curious garnishes, herbs, bitters, shrubs and spirits (sitting at the bar is where it's at, btw. I recently sat in the terribly chic lounge area and it just wasn't the same). It's like a lush drink laboratory. The cocktail menu is impressive. I've tried a bunch of different drinks and they were all top notch, yet I'm afraid I can't give you specifics. If you're a fancy cocktail drinker this place is a four or possibly five star place. If you're a beer drinker then this place is a bit silly as it is just another fancy schmancy cocktail bar that is just way too cool to carry Abita Amber and other well loved beers. They do have beer here but only expensive ones and some I even like but if I want an Abita Amber I want an Abita Amber! The bar is pretty cool with lots of fresh herbs lined up along the bar that they use in the drinks and if I was going to drink a fancy cocktail this would be a pretty cool place to do it. The bar is a bit narrow and small and there is a larger lounge type area with cushy chairs and couches. There were VERY few people here for a Friday during happy hour time when I was here but it seems they don't have happy hour pricing so maybe that's why. I liked the ambiance of this place alright and if there were actually people here and if they had Abita Amber I might even frequent it but otherwise I probably won't be back here unless I get some really unusual craving for a fancy cocktail. read more

Located in the International House Hotel, Loa makes drinks as unique as the ingredients they use, like fresh herbs grown on the bar, unique juices and boutique wines. Know that it takes awhile to get your drink as they are all hand crafted so be ready for a leisurely experience especially if the place is busy like the nights I was there. But the bartenders make it worth the wait with their charming banter and even better drinks. On Friday night a group of 8 ladies and I went to Loa for our roaming Friday happy hour. First, Alan, the manger was amazing! He was accommodating, friendly, and helpful. I went to Loa bar to listen to one of my colleagues play and sing. The bar is right in the lobby of the International House Hotel, which looks very nice. It is a small bar, classy, neat, and very peaceful thanks to the lightings (so many candles and light bulbs). The chairs and sofas were very comfortable, the a/c wasn't blasting (I hate it when it is to cold). They have a very good selection of wines: I got a Barbera, which was deliciously fruity and deep. We went to different places during the evenings and afternoons, but we knew that this is where we were going to start our evening and end our evening. This place has so many comfy, cozy places to sit, or if you would like to stay at the bar, the big barstools make you so comfortable if you want to stay for the evening. You have the best people working there. Taylor is awesome and so is his partner. We kept letting people know that if you give the bartenders choice a try, you'll always be happy. He'll ask you what spirit you like, and if you'd like it shaken or stirred... what are your favorite drinks and he creates something that never forget. The hotel itself is ready a gift of arts and interest. The Loa bar is beautifully set with big comfortable chairs and sofas and pillows. There's privacy areas so you never feel like you're just sitting with a bunch of people if you find a place to be comfortable and have a private conversation. Beautiful windows, looking out at the bustling street at night and lights. Inside, beautiful candlelight throughout. It's a very romantic place. If you want to be part of a fun group, there's a couple areas including the bar that you end up meeting people exchanging phone numbers at the end of the evening because everybody's in such a good mood when they go there. I am so happy that my friend was staying at this hotel and we were able to grab drinks at his lovely bar. This place is insanely good. I LOVE the decor and all the candles surrounding the bar, tables and lighting up the hotel in general. Add on the forest of herbs and additions sitting on the bar and I felt like I was in a different place altogether! The bartender Shawn(Sean?) was SO AMAZING. He presented us with a list of nice cocktails that looked great, then told us that he likes to make personalized drinks for customers based on a couple questions he asks customers. We are the adventurous sort and opted to have personalized cocktails. Our party had a variety of tastes, so Shawn made us a bloody mary, old fashioned, gin, and vodka drink. I don't even like gin, and the fantastic cocktail was out of this world. I couldn't taste the gin and was trying to steal any bit from my friend that she would allow me to snag. The other drinks were excellent as well; he used chocolate bitters in the old fashioned that gave it a complex and unique flavor. We sat at the bar for a couple hours and had two drinks each that got me quite tipsy. I wish I had discovered this bar earlier so I could enjoy it more than once!
