Came here for the band on Sunday night. Never been. What a very nice bar. It has couches and pool tank and comfy chairs. The bar is amazing with an excellent selection of liquor I will be back what a great vibe. Plus the lady's bathroom is so very cool and clean

What a cozy bar! We stumbled on this place randomly one night. It was fairly empty which was fine by us. I love a dark bar for all sorts of reasons. Lol. They have a really nice wooden bar. There's a seating area that looks like a living room which was odd and great at the same time. Drinks are reasonable and I love love love that they have the electeonic machine with different games on the corner of the bar. It was obvious they get regulars from the neighborhood coming in and out which is always good to see. Great neighborhood bar.

    Jambalaya and crawfish every Friday

I am a fan of Monkey Hill Bar, but more specifically, I am a huge fan of the crawfish they serve on Friday. It's a catered affair. Chef Brett provides the goods. Here's the deal. Chef Brett I think is based out of Gretna. He boils a boat load of crawfish and cooks a second boat load of jambalaya or pastalaya. The crawfish are killer. Very nice sized crawfish and they are seasoned beautifully. For some, I bet they fall on the spicy side. I love this. For me, these are the best crawfish in the city. Just my one vote. For jambalya, also excellent. Chef Brett also cooks a pastalaya which is good but not as good. I'm less excited by the pastalaya than the jambalaya. It's just not as good. I recommend getting their early, close to 5. The crawfish start to cool down later in the evening, and we have caught them when they are downright cold. So early is better. Here are some negative things. Monkey Hill bar is not crushing it on the service. You have to buy a ticket from the bartender then get the food. Sometimes the bartender is slow to the game, so it just bogs the system down when are just waiting around to order the crawfish. Also, if you want a refill on drinks or water, you have to go back up to the bar and begin the wait all over. Sometimes it's quick but I hate waiting around for a drink when I have hot crawfish waiting at the table. Despite the minor inconveniences that come with eating in a full on bar, the crawfish are so damn good, it's worth it. Try them out.

Monkey Hill is one of coolest neighborhood bars in New Orleans. First of all, it's big. There's probably a half dozen couches, a few lounge chairs and just a great place to unwind after a long day. Thursday steak night is my favorite.

This place blew me away!! Lived in Nola for 8 years near by and it's always been on my list. I'll admit, we went hungry and from their social media, it appeared they had a delicious menu. Upon arriving, we found out they no longer utilize their kitchen. I'm not sure why but this place would KILL IT with a kitchen. There was almost no one in the building and it is the most adorable spot for date night, couple of friends wanting to catch up or even a spot to play pool. In December they are decorated for the holidays and you can hear the faint Christmas music playing from outside. Behind the bar there is an entertainment room where you can rent out parties. The owner was in and showed me the room himself. I will absolutely recommend this place to anyone looking for a relaxing ambiance or a private party. For private parties, they will assist with food. They have many tvs to display the games and offer sound for their projection screen. Lastly, the bathrooms are gorgeous. You can't find many places with nice bathrooms but Monkey Hill kept the entire place filled with historical Nola charm. I can't stress this enough.... Check out this place!

Especially given its somewhat distant location, Monkey Hill Bar was a welcome respite from an afternoon of long walks through the Garden District. The bar is huge with a variety of seating areas from a long bar to groups of comfortable leather couches. Drink prices are reasonable for the area and the bar provides a wide selection of choices. I don't think the drinks are particularly notable, but they are able to make a variety of drinks. It would be hard for me to comment on the crowd as we came around 5:00 on a weekday, but I would imagine this is a good location for groups due to the size and wide variety of drinks at reasonable prices. Bottom line, it's definitely a great place to stop or gather a group, but I'm not sure it's a destination bar, especially as there aren't a ton of others nearby.

Has it been over a year already since my last review? Well shit... let me regale you with my first adventure at Monkey Hill. So there I was walking along Magazine, before the days of Pinkberry when one could walk in peace without having to Red Rover through a line of Apple addicted hipsters, when I spotted a set of old wooden doors set right on the corner of a non-descript building. "How strange", I thought, "there appears to be a dive bar here. I wonder if I should check this place out?" It was only then I noticed a sign set up on the sidewalk. "Come watch the Saints on our 1,138 inch wide 3D HD screen! Cheap drinks and free food. Wild card, bitches!" Now this seemed an always sunny place I could get behind. So I stepped inside... It was like stepping into a different world. Had I just walked through some kind of portal? I'd expected a dive bar and there I was inside some kind of high-class martini sports lounge complete with plush couches and mood lighting. This wasn't Cheers. If anything it was Cheerleaders, considering the beautiful lineup behind the bar, and the various sports playing on multiple strategically placed TVs. "Did someone fire a portal gun while I wasn't looking? Is there cake in here?" I decided to approach the bar despite the warnings from my exhausted liver. As I walked forward, a dog came out of nowhere to greet my crotch. "Well hello there penis police. This place is dog friendly too? Where's your owner?" And that's when she appeared, as if in a Yelp review. "I'm sorry, Action Jackson here can be a bit of a snout rapist. Can I buy you a bottle of Bordeaux?" Was I dead? Had I fallen into heaven off Magazine? Would Lost end shittastically? "That would be amazing, thank you. What's your name?" "Oh, I'm ######." (Like I'm going to tell you the name of my fantasy girl... write your own!) We sat down at the bar and from there I could see happy hour lasted till 8pm on weekdays and a pool table was in the back, which my hobo-senses told me was even completely free were I to only ask for balls... preferably in a way that suggests testicles. "You haven't been here before have you?" She asked with her perfect face and completely not Twilight-like dialog. "Nope, this is my first time. What's this place called anyway?" "Monkey..." And that's when a monkey dropped down from the ceiling in a rage of masturbation and feces. "Bad monkey! Bad!" I cried out, but that didn't seem to work so finally I got in one little fight and my mom got scared and said "You're moving with your auntie and uncle in Bel Air." I whistled for a cab and when it came near the license plate said fresh and there was dice in the mirror, if anything I could say that this cab was rare but I thought "Nah forget it, yo home to Bel Air." I pulled up to a house about 7 or 8 and I yelled to the cabbie "Yo homes, smell ya later."

Props to any bar that provides these in the bathroom ;)

This place is such a departure from your average New Orleans bar that I don't even know where to start. I really dig the lounging areas with the couches and what not. I also really dig the fact that my friend and I had 8 (?) drinks between us and the bill didn't break the bank at all. But I think my favorite part of the place is the ladies restroom- by far the fanciest I've seen on Magazine. (And we know I have a thing about bar bathrooms...) What I don't understand is the mix of people that were there. It was a Friday night, late-ish, and I feel like the general scene was hipster frat boys who were trying to NOT be hipster frat boys. But not "Dude lets get WASTED!" frat boys; more like "Man, I don't know where I'm going to park my yacht this weekend". Or maybe I'm just use to dive bars where everyone is in jeans and t-shirts. I'd say the average age was mid to late twenties, which was a plus, but then there were also a random amount of older people, possibly pushing their 50's, and THAT is who I noticed getting wasted. I had a good time though, and this place was great for people watching if nothing else. I do think I should probably ditch my SoCal ways next time and possibly wear heels, or at least not my flip flops, which truthfully is kind of a bummer, but definitely not out of the question.
