While it is lacking in terms of available space, food, and drinks, come here for it with amazing views. If you want a great rooftop bar that gives you an excellent view of the financial district as well as Jersey, this is it. Several of us came here a few nights ago to enjoy a great view while the weather was nice in New York City. Beautiful rooftop!! I came across this gem trying to find walking distance rooftop bars from where I was already in the LES. I came here after brunch this past Saturday around 6:30 pm, and the sun was just starting to set. - Daily happy hour (including weekends) from 5 pm - 9 pm. The drinks were alright, but who can say no to HH? I ordered a mojito, and it was so strong that it didn't even taste like a mojito. Slighly sad but I got over it pretty quickly. - Couches/tables are not reserved. So, as soon as someone got up from their table, we rushed to go sit down. The bar area was super packed but the areas around it were spacious enough to stand in or sit but not move around much. Somehow, no matter where I stood, I was always in the waitress's way. - The balcony with the view of Jersey & Hudson River was really nice during sunset. Length wise, it wrapped around the rooftop but the width of it was enough for max 2 people standing side by side (pretty small). The non balcony side of the rooftop had view of WTC which was beautiful both during the day and night. Can't beat it! Definitely recommend if you're in the area. Great view of wtc and the Hudson River. The rooftop bar is different from the hotel bar. Drinks are pricey but very well made. We had the blood orange cosmopolitan and the passion fruit moonshine. Amazing bar with fantastic bartenders and great view. The decoration is really chic with nice sofas and chairs. They have plenty of seatings of sofas and tables by the terrace where the jersey view is seen. There's narrow area where you can walk outside to take a view. We got there in the early Sunday evening. Not packed which is great to me. Buuut, it took my bf over 15 mins to get our drinks. We were standing by the bar, and waiting. I wanted to enjoy this rooftop bar a bit more but there were a few things that prevented my friends and I from fully enjoying ourselves. We arrived around 6PM and we got lost on our way up, ended up at a different bar but the staff member was nice and told us where to go. Once we got up to the bar we headed toward the bar and it was pretty busy so it took a bit to get our drinks. The drinks were actually pretty great, overall taste was good and the amount of alcohol was spot on. Once we got our drinks we walked around the small space to try to find a spot to sit or even stand and this was nearly impossible. If you have a few friends make a reservation if they allow you to, you'll get a seating area and a nice view. If you don't have a reservation, good luck! We stood around awkwardly for a while and were finally able to snag 2 seats at a small seating area but we were crammed by other people and one of us had to stand. It was pretty hard to look at the view before finding a seat. Go early if you can and expect to spend about $20 per drink - again, they are pretty good! read more

The waitress was very sweet and good at her job. Also great view of the Hudson. The place was pretty dirty, and the manager (or host I'm not sure) is who made our experience not so great. He was walking around micromanaging the customers. I had my feet up on a stool, and instead of politely coming over and asking me to take them down, he snapped his fingers and pointed from from my feet to the floor. Then a couple standing on the balcony put their glasses on the ground to capture a good pic of the sunset. She took them off the floor and told them not to put them there during their photo. A different customer came up to us asking to take the stool I had my feet in earlier, so he could use it as a chair at his table. A very cool spot for post work drinks/date night. The happy hour is pretty good running from 5-9pm and includes well drinks as well as cocktails. Some of the cocktails normally come in at $17 but they're all $9 in the happy hour so it's a pretty good deal. Only negative is that the service was pretty slow. We ordered the spinach and artichoke dip to keep us going till our dinner reservation later that evening. 45 minutes later and still no dip. I eventually told our server to cancel the order as we were going to be leaving for diner shortly and I kind of felt like she made it to be big inconvenience for her, rather than apologizing for the fact we had been waiting 45 mins for a DIP. With that being said, I'd come back (but only during happy hour). Had an unsettling experience with this place. About 2 weeks ago I arrived about 10 minutes before the end of happy hour. I told the host that it was just me for happy hour and requested outdoor/ rooftop seating. . He was very pleasant and informed me that the outdoor rooftop was completely full and recommended that it's best to come right at 5:00 to ensure a place outdoors. So yesterday I came right at 5:00 p.m.. A different host told me they only seat hotel patrons and that they don't take any less than a party of two for happy hour. (For happy hour???!) First off if that is true it should be stated on the website. And secondly why didn't the first guy tell me that? Which makes me think based on other reviews that some of the staff are adopting the strategy of turning away smaller parties. Have to say, I eat out extensively at both expensive and more modest places and even when I'm by myself, I have never had ANY venue flat out refuse to take me as a customer in a first come first serve situation. Just plain disrespectful and a bad look, to put it mildly, when people are starting to venture out as paying customers. Friendly bartender at a rooftop bar is almost an oxymoron as most times they fit into aloof, a drink slinger or something other than friendly. Maybe since would describe this as more of a penthouse bar as Azul is technically on the roof of the hotel. This was persons first night at this bar though bartend elsewhere. Both cocktails were made well as sometimes find that when cocktails are on happy hour that they are not as strong. If you've been to the many rooftops in Manhattan, you know that they tend to be massively over crowded, which all but ruins the experience. Bar Hugo though not amazing, is a step up in terms of rooftop experience. Located in Hugo Hotel, the rooftop bar offers some pretty amazing views of the Hudson River, NJ and lower Manhattan. The drinks are a little better than average and the bartenders crank them out at a pretty nice speed. What's even better is that it's rarely crowded, even at the peak times during happy hour. It's also a great place to come with groups. There are lots of tables spread around with seating, which you rarely find at a rooftop. There are also standing tables that face the water and offering amazing views. Overall this is a good option for a rooftop. A bit off the beaten path towards the west side highway near soho, which is likely the reason it's less crowded. However, if you seek to come to a rooftop where you can actually enjoy the scene and walk around freely, this is a great option. It doesn't compare to places like Skylark, but it's a lot better than places like 230 fifth. read more
