It is time for an Ecuadorian lesson.. shall we? Let's break it down: Definition: "Chuzo is a brochette or skewer of marinated, grilled meat with bold seasonings, classic sides, and the unmistakable flavor of Colombian street food." "Bar" well we all know what that means, "vamos, vamos, vamos!" Since my first visit last year, I was hungry for more deliciousness and decided to go with Yelpie friend, Sharon for brunch. Two different brunch menus, Menu 1 offers apps, sides, entrees, cocktails and desserts. Menu 2: Bottomless Brunch for 90 minutes choice of Margaritas for $35 or Mimosas for $30. This was my first visit but it was a wonderful experience. We were greeted cheerfully by a young woman who because we didn't have reservations, literally walked us out through the cold weather to the bar entrance and seated us in a beautiful, corner table. The wait staff was equally charming and attentive and we were directed to the QR code for the menu immediately. It was late afternoon so we opened the Happy Hour menu and it was surprisingly comprehensive. There were cocktails and specialty drinks all discounted for happy hour and a surprisingly large happy hour food menu. The cocktails were excellent (be sure to order a Crystal if you enjoy gin, or an espresso martini which my wife said was excellent) and we ordered Guacamole and chips and oysters which were à la carte and very reasonably priced. My wife doesn't care for oysters so I just ordered a couple for myself. They were beautifully presented on a bed of ice with a fresh lemon, a fresh spicy green mixture instead of horse radish and a sweet but spicy hot sauce. They were wonderful. The guacamole came with home made chips that were thick and well done so they held up to the guac very well. The guac was delicious and a bit chunkier than other places but the texture was wonderful with the thicker chips. For an entree, we chose Chuzos, skewered and grilled chunks of meat (chicken for my wife and NY Strip Steak for me) marinated and grilled to perfection. Both entrees came with large kernel corn which I had never tried before and yuca croquettes, also my first time. The corn was delicious but the kernels were a bit more like beans rather than the corn kernels you might be used to. The yuca croquettes were delicious and probably indistinguishable from potato croquettes in case you are worried you may not enjoy yuca. We actually finished neither entree and the kitchen packed our leftovers carefully for today's lunch (there was PLENTY left over). There was a nice dessert menu but we'll save that for another time. I cannot say enough good things about Bar Chuzo. The staff was friendly and attentive but not hovering or rushing. The food and cocktails were excellently prepared, reasonably priced but not cheap and the dining rooms were beautifully decorated. We didn't have any reservations, but there were seats open by the bar in high top chairs so we were ushered to the back of the house. The kitchen seemed to be backed up at some point during our evening, and our host brought us some homemade guacamole to tie us over, which was incredibly generous and much appreciated! It was the BEST guac I've ever had! We scrapped the plate CLEAN! For the entree, we got the chuzo combo platter with chicken (my personal favorite of the three we got to pick), pork, and the chorizo. Now for the negatives, which should be an easy fix: the food is extremely salty and dry. My paella was dry (never had that happen before). One friend ordered the pork butt and said it was very dry too. We needed to keep drinking water because everything was so salty. We sat at the first table and kept being blown away by the wind... I hope in the winter they address the wind and cold issue - maybe with an exterior protective covering in front or they may not last - it's extremely uncomfortable to eat when freezing and having wind blow directly at you. We went to Bar Chuzo on Friday, March 27th, for the first time, after doing a Google search for the "best paella restaurant in Bay Ridge" and it was outstanding from start to finish. We kicked things off with the guacamole and chips, which were fresh, perfectly seasoned, and a great way to start the meal. The calamari with pico de gallo was light, crispy, and packed with flavor -- not heavy at all, done just right. The highlight of the night was the seafood paella -- absolutely exceptional. It was rich, flavorful, and loaded with perfectly cooked seafood. The blackberry margaritas? Incredible. Refreshing, not overly sweet, and the perfect complement to everything we ordered. We had the Paella for 2 shared the $36. and the mussels and clams were to small the rice was good though. $5. Bar Chuzo is such a great addition to the Bay Ridge area! The location is great on 3rd Avenue and adds more restaurant options to the 90s area. The restaurant itself has a great ambiance - the doors are open in the summer and you can either sit indoors or outside, they even have a whole back room for more tables for bigger groups. The best part of course is the food, they have great options across appetizers, chuzos, and delicious main meals filled with so much flavor. I'm excited to go back to try more dishes on the menu! The drinks were excellent as well, different options for wine and lots of mixed drinks / Negronis available. Lastly, the service was very welcoming and on top of it.
