The only downside was the service at the front. The host seemed a little unfriendly, which wasn't the best first impression. The space itself is spacious, and I loved that they offer both indoor and outdoor dining options. There's plenty of seating either way, and the atmosphere was lively when we visited. That said, the flavors were a little outside of what I was craving that day. I was looking for something light, bright, and refreshing, especially seafood. I ordered the scallop ceviche and completely missed that it came with a guanabana sauce, so it ended up being a much thicker, saucier ceviche than I expected. The scallops were fresh and the flavors were good, but I was really craving a more classic ceviche. I ordered another ceviche afterward, and while the fish was fresh, the pieces were chopped a little too small for my preference and it still wasn't quite what I was looking for. Some of the plantain chips were also a bit too hard to enjoy. The fried branzino was probably my favorite dish. The fish was very fresh, and I loved that the skin was left on. Personally, I think I would have enjoyed it even more with a creamier sauce instead of the chimichurri, but that's just a personal preference. My family and I came on a Wednesday evening without a reservation and were seated with no wait (the host let us know there was a 9pm reservation on our table, giving us 2 hours to dine.) For 3 people we ordered: the calamari, a lobster roll, a potato side dish, a small vegan paella and a chuzo salad. The food was good but not great - the calamari was nothing special, the lobster roll was a little over salted with the fries not fried enough, the potato dish had texture and the toppings on it had spice + acid, the salad was simple but refreshing, and the finally the vegan paella was well seasoned, strong tomato flavor in the rice and the vegetables were nicely charred. The ambiance of the restaurant felt summery, it was a little humid with a slight wind that evening and they had all doors open allowing the breeze to flow through their space beautifully. The biggest let down was their service. For a weeknight at prime dinner hour and not a very crowded night, it took an hour for our food to come out from the kitchen. The sushi grade tuna and avocado layered together in a bright, herbaceous broth that had just the right amount of heat and freshness. Rarely do I give 5 star revisit this place deserves it. Nestled on a quiet corner in Bay ridge, this place gives of family favorite neighborhood vibes. We sat outdoors on the side of the bar at a cool table underneath and umbrella. It's just what I needed on a cool summer day. A delightful in person brunch today. Started with plantain chips and yucca balls for apps. They were deliciously addictive ant the accompanying dipping sauces made it even more enjoyable. The fish didn't have enough flavor and I love branzino. Definitely on the pricey side, it feels like Manhattan pricing in a Brooklyn spot. Sort of like driving a Lamborghini in Flatbush area. We didn't have any reservations, but there were seats open by the bar in high top chairs so we were ushered to the back of the house. The kitchen seemed to be backed up at some point during our evening, and our host brought us some homemade guacamole to tie us over, which was incredibly generous and much appreciated! It was the BEST guac I've ever had! We scrapped the plate CLEAN! For the entree, we got the chuzo combo platter with chicken (my personal favorite of the three we got to pick), pork, and the chorizo. Now for the negatives, which should be an easy fix: the food is extremely salty and dry. My paella was dry (never had that happen before). One friend ordered the pork butt and said it was very dry too. We needed to keep drinking water because everything was so salty. We sat at the first table and kept being blown away by the wind... I hope in the winter they address the wind and cold issue - maybe with an exterior protective covering in front or they may not last - it's extremely uncomfortable to eat when freezing and having wind blow directly at you. Obviously very disappointed. I have had good food here in the past, but I was served a dried up mess of a Seafood Paella on Friday night. I believe it might have been reheated leftovers. Not returning. read more

This was my first visit but it was a wonderful experience. We were greeted cheerfully by a young woman who because we didn't have reservations, literally walked us out through the cold weather to the bar entrance and seated us in a beautiful, corner table. The wait staff was equally charming and attentive and we were directed to the QR code for the menu immediately. It was late afternoon so we opened the Happy Hour menu and it was surprisingly comprehensive. There were cocktails and specialty drinks all discounted for happy hour and a surprisingly large happy hour food menu. The cocktails were excellent (be sure to order a Crystal if you enjoy gin, or an espresso martini which my wife said was excellent) and we ordered Guacamole and chips and oysters which were à la carte and very reasonably priced. My wife doesn't care for oysters so I just ordered a couple for myself. They were beautifully presented on a bed of ice with a fresh lemon, a fresh spicy green mixture instead of horse radish and a sweet but spicy hot sauce. They were wonderful. The guacamole came with home made chips that were thick and well done so they held up to the guac very well. The guac was delicious and a bit chunkier than other places but the texture was wonderful with the thicker chips. For an entree, we chose Chuzos, skewered and grilled chunks of meat (chicken for my wife and NY Strip Steak for me) marinated and grilled to perfection. Both entrees came with large kernel corn which I had never tried before and yuca croquettes, also my first time. The corn was delicious but the kernels were a bit more like beans rather than the corn kernels you might be used to. The yuca croquettes were delicious and probably indistinguishable from potato croquettes in case you are worried you may not enjoy yuca. We actually finished neither entree and the kitchen packed our leftovers carefully for today's lunch (there was PLENTY left over). There was a nice dessert menu but we'll save that for another time. I cannot say enough good things about Bar Chuzo. The staff was friendly and attentive but not hovering or rushing. The food and cocktails were excellently prepared, reasonably priced but not cheap and the dining rooms were beautifully decorated. I will DEFINITELY be back to Bar Chuzo and if you haven't been, I urge you to check them out. You will not be disappointed. read more
