Chicken Chuzo Platter
Aditya S.

This unassuming family owned restaurant in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn serves some of the best Latin seafood dishes in the city with Ecuadorian influences. The place is small with crowded tables but the service is great and the food comes out fast. The scallop crudo is a fresh and clean bite with melt in your mouth sashimi grade scallop tossed in sweet guanabana, apple, and honey roasted cucumbers. The tuna aguachile is plated beautifully with a stack of avocado, tuna, and cucumbers that goes perfectly with the house made corn chips. The crab cake is filling and flavorful on a base of creamy pepper sauce. The chicken chuzo is grilled perfectly and drizzled in a delicious salsa verde. The drinks were decent with a standout being the Bay Ridge Baby with raspberry jam, lemon, and blanco tequila.

Crab Cake Benedict with potato pancake with delicious dipping sauce

A delightful in person brunch today. Started with plantain chips and yucca balls for apps. They were deliciously addictive ant the accompanying dipping sauces made it even more enjoyable. Fawn chose the chicken Chuzo platter which she loved and I went with the crab cake Benedict. This was superb and honestly one of the most satisfying Benedict dishes I've ever had. The atmosphere was comfy and inviting and service was flawless and delightful.

I always enjoy Bar Chuzo. Went there for a women's business meeting today for which Dana always so graciously offers her restaurant. Dana and Ronnie are such a nice people and the food is always flavorful. Thank you for coming to Bay Ridge. Highly recommended.

Seafood paella Hamburger

Food was solid, the burger was tasty and the seafood paella had great flavor and a generous portion. Shrimp was juicy, but the mussels were tiny and underwhelming for the price $32. Desserts were nice, though the crème brûlée had a hard candied top we weren't fans of (just personal taste). Space is a bit tight, but they make it work. Definitely on the pricey side, it feels like Manhattan pricing in a Brooklyn spot. Sort of like driving a Lamborghini in Flatbush area. The restaurant before Bar Chuzo was Oishi Noodle Bar and the cuisine was also on the pricier side. Both restaurants priced their cuisine on a pricier side of the block. Still, a good experience overall if you're craving Spanish/Ecuadorian food and don't mind splurging a little. We'd come back for a special treat.

Tuna agua chile w homemade chips

This place serves absolutely amazing tuna agua chile. And they serve it with chips Rey make in-house! They also have a drink, it's a Bay Ridge something - I forget the name - that is really nice with fresh fruit muddled in. I've had a few things here before, like their chorizo, and everything is on point. I love their skewers and the sides they come with, just don't dip it in that sauce. It isn't tongue friendly, it is friggen SPICY. I learned just HOW spicy the hard way... But I keep coming back for that tuna agua chile. I could drink the juice right off the plate. This is a really great addition to Bay Ridge and makes perfect sense how they won the readers choice award for best restaurant from bkmag.

My gal pal and I have a monthly date to do something different, and she has been talking about coming to Bar Chuzo with me for a few weeks now. We didn't have any reservations, but there were seats open by the bar in high top chairs so we were ushered to the back of the house. The vibe is very Havana with classy flare; great for a date or coworkers for a cocktail or two. The space makes you feel far away from the streets of Brooklyn, and the music matches the energy of its patrons. The staff are all lovely and attentive. The menu is filled with unique eats and each plate we watched come flying out of the kitchen looked better than the next. As I was the designated driver for the night, I skipped the drinks, but I wasn't skipping on an appetizer. We opted to share the mama's shrimp ceviche, that was fresh and tasty! The plantain chips were a great pairing; super addictive! The kitchen seemed to be backed up at some point during our evening, and our host brought us some homemade guacamole to tie us over, which was incredibly generous and much appreciated! It was the BEST guac I've ever had! We scrapped the plate CLEAN! For the entree, we got the chuzo combo platter with chicken (my personal favorite of the three we got to pick), pork, and the chorizo. Grilled to perfection and great for sharing! The chicken was juicy and packed a flavorful punch with the accompanying chiptole sauce on the side. The portion would be perfect if this was all you were planning to get, but I highly recommend coming here to share and experience as much of the menu as possible. The other patrons were laughing, chatting loudly, and just filled with smiles. The atmosphere was infectious and we plan to come back with our respective partners soon. Another great spot in Bay Ridge!

Bar Cruzo anchors the corner of 3rd Avenue and 94th Street in Bay Ridge, serving up Ecuadorian cuisine that's roughly half seafood--think ceviches, shellfish and daily whole-fish specials--alongside chicken, beef and pork dishes. Stepping inside, you'll find a sleek, modern dining room bathed in warm light and furnished with clean lines. When we visited on a Monday at 1:30pm, the pace was unhurried--just a handful of tables occupied--while Merengue tunes poured through the speakers, keeping the energy lively even in a midday lull. We slid in on a quiet Monday at 1:30pm--just enough Merengue to tap your foot without needing earplugs--and were promptly offered fizzy or flat water (fizzy, obviously). Enter Lindsey, our server and culinary tour guide, armed with a friendly smile and a QR code to unlock the menu. To start, we couldn't resist "Mama María's" Shrimp Ceviche, served alongside crisp, house-made plantain chips. Imagine a citrus bomb--bright lime juice, fresh cilantro--dancing with the perfect pinch of salt, all balanced on those impossibly crunchy chips. If Bar Cruzo sold it by the gallon, we'd clear out their stock. For mains, the Chuzo Combo is the ultimate choose-your-own-adventure: pick three skewers from chicken thigh, NY strip steak, marinated pork butt, spicy chorizo, or a veggie option. Each arrives drizzled with a tangy "magical" sauce and accompanied by golden yuca croquettes, buttery Andean corn, and a shot of house hot sauce guaranteed to wake your taste buds. Our MVPs were the chicken and the strip steak--both meltingly tender, richly seasoned, and cooked medium-rare to perfection. The pork was solid, though next time I'd brine it for an extra punch; my dining partner swore the chorizo was a revelation of smoky spice. Pro tip: those online photos downplay the portions. We happily packed up enough leftovers to fuel a small army. Lindsey tempted us with desserts--think velvet chocolate creme brulee and creamy bread pudding--but we were so blissfully sated that the most decadent thing we could manage was dreaming about next time. At $85 for an appetizer and two hearty entrees (before tip), Bar Cruzo feels like a steal--$42.50 per person for a ticket to Ecuador's vibrant flavors, right in Bay Ridge. Whether you're a seafood aficionado or a meat-and-potatoes loyalist, this spot has earned a permanent place on our list of neighborhood champions. Next visit, we're eyeing their whole fish special and swapping stories with the chef about that secret ceviche marinade--because once you've tasted Bar Cruzo, every other meal feels like just an appetizer.

Fresh chips, guacamole, calamari...sooo good!
Penny M.

Fantastic food, drinks, service and ambiance-who could ask for anything more? So friendly and accommodating.... One of the best frozen margaritas, made with care and precision. The fried calamari was fantastic-so crispy, the fried yuca ball things were so tasty and satisfying and that chunky guacamole-awesome! The servers were personable and you can tell so proud to represent this restaurant- Thanks for a fantastic experience!

cocktails!

we started off with a few drinks & tried a variety of cocktails. every single one was tasty! as for food, we ordered the shrimp ceviche, tuna agua chile, and the brasa wings coated in a spicy peanut sauce- all super flavorful. we also had the bone marrow, seafood paella, and pork seco. the paella sauce was a bit heavy for me personally but my friend enjoyed it. i'd still recommend trying a paella and deciding for yourself. the service was warm and went above and beyond, though at times it felt like our conversations were a bit interrupted. overall, it's a charming spot to dine at with friends & loved ones.

This is shrimp on skewers Chuzo style with South American corn and little cheese balls with delicious green sauce.

The service, atmosphere and food amazing and of course drinks too. The food so fresh and deliciously moist . It was my first time but I can't wait to go back and highly recommend to others.

Paella

To went to celebrate a friend's birthday. First the positives: The place is cute but super small. The staff is friendly and attentive. The guava rose sangria was delicious. Now for the negatives, which should be an easy fix: the food is extremely salty and dry. My paella was dry (never had that happen before). One friend ordered the pork butt and said it was very dry too. We needed to keep drinking water because everything was so salty. We sat at the first table and kept being blown away by the wind... I hope in the winter they address the wind and cold issue - maybe with an exterior protective covering in front or they may not last - it's extremely uncomfortable to eat when freezing and having wind blow directly at you. I think this place has a lot of potential and as I said, the negatives are an easy fix.

I am a local and really enjoy having this spot here. Trendy on the inside seating on the outside. Cocktails are great love the Chuzo margarita the sangria, and other drinks that I've tried. They have a new bar opening adjacent to the restaurant, which is very cute. As far as the food goes, I love the appetizers and the Chuzos. The other food has been good as well. I will keep coming great little place.

Went in for brunch after working out. The food came out quickly after my order was taken and I was delighted at how good everything was. Brunch with Latin flare. The ambiance was relaxed and chill. It had a great lounging vibe.

In my head and too so other places I've been to when you ask for a bulldog you get a nice big margarita glass with the bottle usually beer inside. Nope here they gave me a tiny glass with the cognac inside, no way you're calling that a bulldog and charging almost 20 for it. It was good but not justifiable at that size. I had this one drink and left. 3 stars maybe I'll try them again soon

Defeated, that only made me want Ecuadorian food even more. I began a mission to get a plate of llapingachos (mashed potatoes laced with cheese and topped with peanut sauce, a typical dish in the Cuenca/Azogues area of Ecuador.) Yelp did not fail me. I walked south and found this place just after some scaffolding. I sat down and was promptly given a menu. Llapingachos are usually eaten with fritada (fried pork) or hornado (roast pork, like pernil.) Them I saw guatita (tripe with peanut sauce) and was almost lead astray and said to myself, No, you came here for llapingachos and llapingachos you shall have. The menu had pictures and I even saw a plate pairing them with steak and eggs. It was a hard decision, but I went with that. The waitress brought out green sauce, called ají in Colombia (not sure what it's called in Ecuador.) my husband ordered the bandeja paisa, a Colombian dish. I waited in trepidation, as I was starving at this point. The food came and I was unsure what to go for first. The meat, the llapingachos, the fried eggs, the salad, or the rice. I gave each a turn. What I love about Ecuadorian cooking, is that there's often a variety of foods on one plate. I hadn't had this plate in ages, so this was a real treat. I wasn't feeling 100% today, so the meal was hearty, yet had nothing to upset my stomach. It turned out to be just the right thing for me. My husband enjoyed his meal, though it was a riff on the traditional plate. They left out the area yet added a few pieces of pork on the bone. He seemed to enjoy his meal. I'd go back. In fact, a personal obligation will require me to be back in the neighborhood in a few days and now I have a little spot to go to that I can trust. I might just try the guatita this time.
