Over the past year I have been here a couple of times and it doesn't hit as well as it did before 2020, used to be a little excited on coming here during a work lunch, not no more. The pan fried pork dumplings are more like pan lightly seared dumplings and texture of the dumpling seems a bit mushy, like the consistency of overcooked pasta. Pretty good dumplings. If you are mapping with GPS it'll take you to a building that you need to enter then go DOWN to the tunnels to the underground. I liked the steamed chicken dumplings. They are open only until 1:30 so basically just weekday lunches. I will have to Try their boba some other time when I'm not on a no boba diet. read more

Great place to get your fill of dumplings at a good price. On my recent visit, I had a vermicelli bowl with grilled pork. Very good, but I miss the dumplings. I will have to order them next time. One thing about the menu is that Baoz offers many different combo items, but mainly with bahn mi sandwiches and spring rolls. Dumplings are mostly all by themselves. I would love to see a bahn mi/dumpling combo. read more

I love the simplicity of Baoz- they have dumplings, a few side soups, banh mi, bubble tea, and spring rolls. But they do them ALL well in my opinion. Really I could just throw a dart at the board and like whatever they serve. I do wish there was a way to appease my "low waste" tendencies by using less plastic and styrofoam when eating here but that's a problem anywhere you get food in the tunnels since its all "takeout". My favorite is still the lemongrass tofu spring rolls but oftentimes they're out of them and I have to wait a few minutes for them to make them from scratch, but they're always super accommodating. The tempo of the place is fast since they're used to churning out customers but anytime I've come here with someone for the first time they are able to slow down the pace (albeit for only a minute or two). read more

REALLY like this spot. If you're craving some dumplings and want to venture into Houston's underground tunnels, this is the joint to go to. Fast, efficient, cheap and delicious. I had 12 dumplings and the summer rolls which were more than enough (each dumpling is bite-sized). If you're looking for a challenge, get 18 for just a dollar more. I'm a big fan of a healthy rivalry. So when I heard about a different dumpling spot downtown that some claimed was better than Doozo, I was all for it! Armed with my directions on how to get to it in the tunnels, I made my way down there for second lunch today. Why second lunch? Because I had naively thought that a salad and a slice of cheese pizza would keep me from wanting to gnaw my arm off. So I head down there. At first glance, I was a little overwhelmed by the menu and choices. I kind of like the simplicity of ordering at Doozo. But I asked the girl at the counter what I should order, and she suggested chicken dumplings. So off we went! I ordered 12 steamed dumplings with spicy sauce, 6 chicken and 6 vegetarian. I waited a few minutes, picked up my meal and walked myself back to my office. First bite was of a chicken dumpling. It wasn't bad. As a matter of fact, the chicken filling was actually pretty tasty. And the sauce was good. But the dumpling wrapper itself was really thin, too soggy and torn in a few spots. So then I turned my attention to the vegetarian. I had high hopes for this, because I am a BIG fan of the Dooza vegetarian dumplings. First bite, and my only thought was "NO." I can't even explain why I disliked it so heartily. There was very little substance to the filling, first of all. There was maybe a teaspoon of filling in each dumpling. But also, there was very little flavor. Oh my goodness, these dumplings were some of the best I've had. I had Doozo a few weeks ago and they were so doughy and tough. These are quite the opposite. The dumpling is light and airy, filled with a deliciously flavorful pork and a spicy dipping sauce. They a offer a great combo here with your choice of 18 (who gets 18?? Seriously!?), 12, or 8 dumplings and a choice of 2 sides. I chose 8 dumplings, a sesame ball and egg drop soup. The sesame ball was delicious and weird, I had no idea what I was eating, the contents were a total mystery to me (I have since learned that it is filled with brown sugar and red bean paste). The soup was just ok.. Sometimes egg drop can smell like a chicken coop and that was the case today. I only had a few bites. I've since tried the other soups and was also unimpressed. I am in love... I can't stop going back to this place! If you love dumplings, and happen to be in the Houston Tunnels, then this is the place to be. Bao Z has a variety of lunch combos to select from (depending on whether you want a drink, egg roll, soup, etc...). I tend to go for the #1 with 6 pork/6 chicken which comes with a drink and egg roll for under $8. Hard to beat that price and still leave with a full (and happy) belly. I must say that I did try the egg drop soup once and was not impressed. I will be sticking to just the egg roll as my side from now on. The egg rolls are small and very crisp which I prefer to the larger soggy ones you find at other places. As for the dumplings (I mean, that's why you came here right?) they are excellent! The wrapper is what sets Bao Z apart. Their wrapper is very thin, almost see through. Result is a smaller dumpling with a good portion of goodies stuffed within that just feels right. I am a wimp when it comes to spice so I always go with the regular sauce which is splendid. Go for the spicy though if you are into that kind of thing. I can only comment on the pork and chicken fillings and I must say both are exquisite. Come early (11:00 - 11:15ish) if you want to beat the line. But never fear, even with a huge line these guys know what they are doing and have always had my order ready within a few mins. read more

I recommend the pan fried option. You get a choice of regular sauce or spicy sauce. I went with both and enjoyed both about the same. The egg roll was a little disappointing though. It was this super tiny, scrawny looking fried tube, filled with maybe...something? I couldn't tell. The egg drop soup was so-so as well. It was a little bland. If you work downtown, then it's not a bad choice for a quick and easy Asian meal. However, if you do not work downtown, then I wouldn't recommend making an extra trip for it. I was a little underwhelmed. I opted for the pork dumplings that were pan finished. I figured I would get 18 dumpling special (total including tax less than $10 in June of 2016) as they were only about a dollar more than the 12 dumpling specials. They flavor was okay, nothing special, but they were over pan fired an a little burnt. The skin was thin and meat was well flavored. I wish I did get a little more sauce for 18 dumplings as it is the same amount for 12. I also got the egg roll and the soup. Soup was decent as was the egg roll - that is the most I can say. They came out quick and the service was polite. I will go back. I think I may opt to just steamed. read more

A very affordable dumpling option with an okay vegetarian option, Baoz is a nice change-up from Doozo, but isn't nearly as good. The vegetarian filling is not too memorable, and leaves a lot to be desired. I totally recommend you try it to see what I mean. The dumplings themselves are rather small, but you get 6, 12, or 18 of the little guys. You can choose between stir-fried and steamed, though, which is nice, but I don't think they are fried to order, so the result is a bit soggy. My biggest gripe with Baoz is the dumpling wrapper: it's thinner and more consistent than any other dumpling I'd normally eat. That's because the wrapper is definitely from a pre-made frozen package. And when you eat it, I think if you grew up making and eating dumplings, you'd notice it immediately. If you like the taste and texture, more power to you! It's just something that bothers me. I feel like it's comparing made-from-scratch pizza to Tombstone frozen pizza. I went for lunch on the Tuesday that Tropical Storm Bill was supposed to hit because Doozo was shut down. Got here just before they closed. Last one on the last for today. I got to compare all 3 tunnel dumpling shops today. I purchased 12 steamed pork dumplings for $6.35 with spicy sauce. They were by far the best wrapped, compared to Star Chef and Doozo (meaning thinnest wrapping and not over steamed) and probably the best deal cost-wise. The meat's flavor is ok.. it just does not have as much meat or flavor as the other 2 places. They should add more meat and less napa cabbage. They also have a good happy hour where they have $3 boba drink. I got the strawberry yokult yogurt drink with $0.50 additional cost for honey boba. I have not tried it yet. .. but will once I get to my car. I don't want to spill it. .. since I'm carrying lots of Togo dumplings with from Star Chef dumpling house, Doozo, and now Baoz dumplings. My friends will get to partake in this sampling as well! read more

Baoz Dumplings have their charms, but in my book, Doozo is the slight winner. At Baoz, the smallest dumpling order is 8 -- it's 5 at Doozo -- but Baoz dumplings are far smaller with thinner skin. As others have noted, I do think these dumplings are frozen and reheated, whereas Doozo's are made fresh. That's not to say they aren't good, but they are similar to what I buy at 99 Ranch or H-Mart and cook at home. I like that you can get pan fried dumplings at Baoz, and I like that you can get a mix of fillings in your order. I was able to try both the pork and chicken, and I preferred the chicken. At Doozo, I prefer the pork. The sauce is where the battle is really won, in my opinion. The spicy sauce at Doozo has lovely ginger flavor to it. The sauce at Baoz has more of a sour ponzu flavor. Again, both are good, but I prefer the hint of ginger. I also like how the thick homemade wrappers of Doozo dumplings soak up that sauce. The sauce didn't adhere to the more oily wrappers at Baoz. I got the veggie eggroll and the hot and sour soup as my sides, and I did not care for either of these. The eggroll had no flavor and hardly any filling, and the soup had a musty scent and flavor. I prefer the fresh fruit or large spring roll options as sides from Doozo. Overall, Doozo tastes more fresh and unique than Baoz, but both stores have their benefits. My little pork dumpling, wrapped in swaddling dough, you are delicious. I baptize you in spicy soy sauce and you become perfect. My precious bundle of joy is a healthier alternative to that grease-filled fast food or mundane sandwich. Bao-Z is WAY better than Doozo. Bao-Z is tucked away in the underground tunnel system, so it is lesser known. Bao-Z dumplings are smaller, but they are fresher, warmer, and full of flavor. Take your pick of meat for your dumpling/pot-sticker: pork, chicken, shrimp, or if you are crazy - vegetable. The egg roll is average. I enjoy the egg drop soup. The scallion pancake aka green onion pie ($1.50) is pleasant as well. Baoz offers a variety of pricing and combos. You can mix flavors. Here are some: 12 pcs for $5.50 12 pcs + soup + drink for $7.00 12 pcs + soup + egg roll for $7.00 daily special: 18 pcs + soup + egg roll for $7.50. It wasn't until about the fifth time I passed this quaint Asian-esque dumpling shop when I finally took the plunge and decided to savor its delectable flour-wrapped nuggets. Speaking from a first generation Asian American point of view, I was caught off guard by its flavor (in a good way). At first I was skeptical for there was a lack of Fresh-Off-the-Boat (aka FOB - term used to describe Asian natives who emigrated from Asia) patrons with an expert palate for authentic Asian cuisine in line, which is usually my trusty, "scientific," tried and true gauge of Asian food authenticity. But after mitigating my skepticism by rationalizing the fact that there aren't many in the near vicinity in the downtown Houston tunnels in the first place, let alone any major office building, I stepped in line and ordered the special combo (of course after waiting about 10 minutes for my turn). Their special combo consisted of 18 (yes, EIGHTEEN) dumplings steamed or pan-fried (like potstickers) with two of their side dishes: egg roll, soft drink, hot and sour soup, egg drop soup, wonton soup ($1.50 extra), and fried wontons. The dumplings can be ordered with a variety of stuffing: pork, chicken, vegetable, or shrimp (which also contains some pork ingredients). I've never had chicken dumplings before so I went ahead and ordered the chicken potstickers with a soft drink, hot and sour soup, and extra hot dumpling sauce. About 5 minutes of anticipation (I didn't eat a sufficient breakfast that morning) my $7.50 order was finally ready. I started with the soup. It was hot...and spicy...actually very hot...and spicier than usual. Not scalding, but quite hot, and it actually made it more enjoyable to eat. There weren't much bamboo shoot strips or the black mushroom-type ingredient in the hot and sour soup, and it was more sour than usual - not pleasing. The flavor was sub par; but the dumplings, on the other hand, were better than I expected. The perfectly cooked, lightly salty dumpling skin complimented the savory, gingery chicken stuffing remarkably well. Once you added the spicy (it wasn't extra hot to me), soy-saucy, and slightly sweet dumpling sauce to the equation, great things ensue. The inherent sweetness from the garlic really does wonders here. Overall, I'd have to say that my first experience was not unpleasant, but surprisingly pleasing. Despite the slight miss with the hot and sour soup, the dumplings were on the mark. I can picture Baoz Dumpling House serving as a recurring lunch venue for me during my internship at V&E. In the meantime, I will pray there won't be a large influx of FOBs for I lack enough patience. read more

I was not supposed to fall in love with you, Bao-Z! I am a devout Doozo dumpling patron - at least once a week since I started working downtown. I pass Bao-Z on my walk to Doozo and would often scoff at the idea of cheating on my beloved Doozo..and then today happened. I had a moment of weakness and order dumplings from Bao-Z instead. Here is how they stack up against Doozo: Bao-Z's steamed chicken and steamed pork dumplings blew Doozo's out of the water as there is a lot more flavor in Bao-Z's version (thanks to green onion). However, Doozo's veggie dumpling are far better than Bao-Z's. Doozo's are just more unique - I feel like I have had BZ's veggie dumplings at other restaurants. As much as it pains me to say this - Bao-Z is better overall. They have so many more options for us dumpling diners! Like what? SCALLION PANCAKES!!! They are exactly what they sound like and they are perfection. They have a few soups I have yet to try as well as crispy veggie egg rolls (that are delicious but WAY TOO greasy). I also like that they have the option of steamed or pan fried dumplings. I find BZ's dipping sauce to be more favorable to Doozo's (less gingery but in a good way). I'll admit I missed my sweet little dumpling nazi at the Doozo counter, and will continue to frequent her often... ...and as for Bao-Z - I will be back! read more

In the battle over top Downtown Dumpling, the winner is: Baoz. Being just a little disappointed by the above ground located Doozo, I made a special trip underground into the tunnels to find Baoz. Admittedly, it's been on my list of things to try since I first saw it reviewed on Yelp well over a year ago. At a tiny counter in the tunnels, you can get cooked to order, pan-fried or steamed Baoz dumplings that are tasty and hot. Thin skinned dough (kinda of gyoza styled) is filled with your choice of well seasoned pork, chicken, veggie & shrimp. I always go for the pork (the other white meat) pan fried. I suspect that these dumplings might be pre-made from a supplier, but they are delicious nonetheless. You can order al a carte, but they have a bunch of dumpling combos that average around 7 dollars, a complete hot meal for pretty cheap. I wouldn't mind some fancier condiments like grated ginger or peppers, but this is counter service. So when your down in Downtown and ready for a tasty dozen, hit Baoz. read more

The only way to describe them is Cantonese. You know this once you hear the people in the back talk. Great food, I always go when we don't know what to eat. Baoz had standard, tasty, crispy, meat free egg rolls. Doozo's spring roll was lettuce wrapped rice noodles and nasty, hidden mystery meat. Yuck. Baoz 10, Doozo 8 Round 2: Baoz veggie pan fried dumplings versus Doozo vegetarian dumplings. Doozo has no pan fried options and has thicker, doughier skins. Their filling is tasty with spinach and rice noodles. Baoz has pan-fried option, thin skinned dumplings with a more traditional filling. As an ex-CIA agent, I found both tasty and satisfying; but M and F did not really like the Doozo dumplings. Baoz 10, Doozo 9. Round 3: Baoz sauce versus Doozo sauce. This turned out to be a service issue. Baoz asked if we wanted it spicy (we did) and their sauce was nice, mildly spicy. Doozo we asked for hot sauce, they said flippantly it was already there, and it wasn't. Their dipping sauce was overly sweet and tasted doctored and "Americanized". Baoz 10, Doozo 9. Round 4: Baoz service versus Doozo service. It was a KO. Doozo service plain sucked. Even, for an ex-CIA agent who has lived in the underbelly of Asia and happily accepts poor service in Chinatowns across America, they seemed repugnantly out of place in the highly white-washed food court, USA. It looks like I'm the only one who would prefer Doozo's over Baoz! The dumplings were too skinny for me to tell if they were significantly better than Doozos. I got Combo C -- $7 for 8 dumplings, a soup, and an eggroll. I got 4 pork and 4 veggie. The pork tasted like your average and the veggie had noodles, spinach, carrots. The rice paper was delicate enough (i got steamed ones), but they tasted like really good frozen ones! The eggroll was clearly a frozen veggie one. And the won ton soup was ooookay. read more

Baoz's dumplings are more Asian than any of the other dumpling places in downtown. They have the traditionally smaller dumplings with thin skin and packed with more flavor. I think their dumplings are good, but it's just not enough for me for lunch. You can get 6, 12, or 18 dumplings. I don't know who would get six- it's so small that it'd be like eating a piece of bread for lunch. 12 dumplings is about $5.50, and they usually have a lunch special of 18 dumplings with 2 sides (soup, egg roll, fried wonton, etc.) and a drink for $7.50. The lunch special is definitely a better deal, but I didn't want the sides or drink, so I got the 12 dumplings. This was not enough food for me... Unlike the dumpling nazi at Doozo though, the guy that runs this place is very patient and friendly. read more

So i went back for another helping and they had a special of 18 with soup and something else on the sides list. This time around, shrimp dumplings. I noticed if you walk closer and look up, there is a disclaimer announcing due to increasing food costs, shrimp will be an extra so and so for 1-x and x-y orders. I don't remember the counts because i got food coma. I think it was an extra .25 cents for mine which brought my total to 8 bux including tax. So this time, i did the half and half pan and steamed. the steamd went faster than the fried. the fried actually filled me up more and bonked me on the head with the food coma. I should also note this is the only place i've seen that has shrimp dumplings so far. Verdict? Full and satisfied which earns them a 4 stars in my book. I would get them a fifth but they accidentally gave me extra spicey sauce instead of the mild and i ended up roasting all my sinuses out on the first dip and bite. that was a unexpected surprise. I do agree with jeena, the service here isn't as fast as star chef or doozos, but I feel its worth the wait if you can wait. the dumpling texture and skin flavor is a little different from the latter choices. the steam ones don't give me as much of a food coma as the others but if i get the pan fried.. its food coma all around no matter where i go. note on location: go to the Lamar and fannin side of the building across the street from the zeros sandwich shop and go down the escalators as soon as you walk in. there you'll find the place to the far right tucked between the barbershop and the kolache place. read more

Located in the tunnel under first city tower, this little dumpling place is a gem! The lunch special gives you a ton of dumplings (18 or so if I remember correctly), plus you get a drink and a side all for around 8 bucks. I had the egg drop soup which was good and I went with the steamed chicken dumplings, although they have fried/vegetarian/pork/etc. They were not soggy at all and held together very nicely while eating which makes for a less messy experience. There was no way I could finish them all in one sitting so I ended up with dinner too! Suggestion: Be sure to ask for extra sauce because they only put one in your box and it is simply not enough for all those delicious dumplings! read more

I like their hot and sour soup. It's not the best in all the land (well, I could argue that it is if the land is limited to the inner inner loop - 45/59/I-10), but it always hits the "I think I'm coming down with a sinus infection or cold and I want to sweat it out" spot. It's pretty spicy, then I also add a bit more (lots more) hot sauce, so there's that, too. I gravitate towards an order of eight steamed veggie dumplings, a side (it doesn't matter - they're all mediocre), and the hot and sour soup. It's around seven bucks. The dumplings are lovely for tunnel food. They also offer pork, chicken, and shrimp, but eh. Also, you have the option between plain sauce or spicy. Unless you are from the midwest and ketchup makes you sweat, go for spicy. It's pretty mild. read more

Boaz Dumpling- you're allright! So, I finally decided to try out the Doozo vs Boaz Dumpling rivalry, and see for myself. I do have to say, these dumplings are pretty damn good. I typically put on my headphones and make a trek out to the other side of downtown. After the end of my short walk, I head to the counter where there is typically a good crowd of people anxiously waiting for their food. The guy at the counter is friendly (no dumpling nazi here), and I typically get the 6 shrimp/ 6 veggie. I have also tried their dee-licioius pancake as well. Yum! The pork dumplings are pretty tasty as well. There are a few tables nearby - where I'm able to enjoy my yummy dumplings. I actually prefer these to Doozo. My Asian food escape before I face another afternoon of spreadsheets and phone calls. read more

Yep, still lovin' the Baoz! For a quick, delicious lunch, I can always depend on this little dumpling spot. I MUCH prefer their more delicate wrapper to the other dumpling joints downtown. Baoz dumplings also feel light in the mouth. Not sure how they acheive it, but they do. Personally, I love the pork dumplings and I always get them with spicy sauce. Recently, I discovered the very tasty eggrolls. They are light and crispy little envelopes of goodness. I'm going to dream about the tasty filling with bean threads and carrots all mixed in. The ordering is more relaxed too. No one is going to yell at you if you take a second ordering or paying. Also, you can get some really good iced tea, as they sell the best brand, IMHO. read more
