Read great reviews about this place, so was eager to try for myself. We split the spinach and cheese bureks. My first time, so I've nothing to compare it to, but these were really tasty. The coiled up dough was perfectly cooked and stuffed with filling in every bite. The dough itself was made of beautiful thin layers of pastry that were light, but with such a large serving ended up being plenty filling. We were there on a Sunday morning and the baker was pulling the bureks warm from the oven- can't get fresher! Staff is really friendly and it seems like they have lots of regulars. The have a great selection of bread, desserts, and to accompany them, coffee. The menu isn't huge but the few items they have are good. The coffee (I had the cappuccino) was okay, nothing special. The spinach burek (bread filled with spinach and cheese) was fantastic and so was the keks torta (chocolate coffee cake). The service was excellent and the pricing was fair. We were on our way to set up an overnight Hog Roast when I just happened to spot the sign for Balkan Bakery and thought "I've got to check this place out in the morning". I've been around bakeries a whole bunch and whenever I see one that I've never heard of I generally stop in at some point. This is especially true when it's an ethnic place, then it's a priority. On my way back to help my co-worker set up to cater the Hog I made a point to stop by, especially since I'd not had breakfast yet. I went in not knowing a thing about what to expect or what to eat and found this cozy little place where the baker was just pulling something out of the oven, what it was I had no idea but everyone in front of me were buying them. They were shaped like a large flatter version of a cinnamon roll but looked like phyllo dough. I asked the lady behind the counter what they were and what's in them? She said either ground beef, cheese or Spinach and Cheese and they're called "Burek". All I can say is Wow! I had the Spinach and Cheese but will certainly go back to get others!! So a couple of years ago, we discovered this Balkan Bakery. My husband goes there quite a bit. Yesterday I wanted to suprise him with some goodies so I stopped by. I purchased $17 worth of stuff. When I got home there was one item missing - it was a cheese pie. I asked for two - he gave me one. No big deal people make mistakes. I went back to tell him and get more bread. He and his wife talked about it while I was standing there and mulled over the register. I told him everything I purchased and the total and he remembered and found the transaction. Except, he did not believe me. I didn't say anything. It really wasn't about the $. I wanted my husband to have it - it's his Birthday too. So, the guy didn't budge. Rang up my stuff and that's it. I walked away with such a bad taste in my mouth. I almost felt ashamed for lying. Except I didn't lie!!!!!!!!! It's so sad bc we will never go back. I know this from retail. I live to discover gems like Balkan Bakery. Find me a space in the Phoenix area that transforms me to a place that feels like a million miles away and I'm there. Oh don't get me wrong, the aesthetics of this bakery aren't anything special. But between the smells of fresh baked bread, grocery items from halfway around the world, and the battalions of Slavic speaking customers streaming in all morning, Balkan Bakery is truly a unique find in the Phoenix area culinary scene. On a Saturday mid-morning, I stepped inside. Look for Balkan Bakery on the southwest corner of 12th Street and Bell Road in an otherwise nondescript shopping center. The space is small with seating for a dozen inside and maybe a half dozen outside. But walk inside and you quickly discover this is no ordinary bakery. Between the shelves of Balkan region grocery items, baskets on the wall full of fresh baked breads, and cases full of sweet treats and Balkan regional soft drinks, there's bound to something you'll like here. Both the Phoenix New Times and Dominic Armato of the Arizona Republic have sung praises about owner Jasenko Osmic's Cavapis. And having sampled some delicious Cevapis (warm pastries stuffed with links of sausages) at Old Town Sarajevo, I have doubt Balkan Bakery's versions are undoubtedly just as delicious. But I'm here for a Burek. A filo dough pastry shaped similarly to a Cevapi, but inside these you can get cheese or spinach or both. I of course opted for both. While I was at it, I opted to try another uniquely Balkan baked good. A Kifla is a yeast dough made by folding thin sheets into a crescent shape. Unlike the croissant, a Kifla is a bread moreso than a pastry. Total cost for the Burek and Kifla plus tax came to $8. The Kifla was doused with a sprinkling of salt on top for texture, but honestly the interior of the bread itself was the real treat for me. A nice warm slightly crunchy exterior but light, smooth and fluffy on the inside. The Burek can be eaten by hand, but out of respect for the other patrons who were using their utensils, I did the same. The Burek is basically the size of my head, but is nevertheless a fairly light pastry with the usual flakiness and crunch you would expect with a multi layer filo dough. The mix of cheese and spinach on the interior was also a pleasant mix. A distant cousin of the Greek Spanakopita you could say. And a tasty one at that. Put together, a nice mid-morning meal or a snack for later. Jasenko was extremely pleasant to me at the front counter and I saw steady streams of customers and their families speaking in Slavic dialects throughout my time here. Many ordering entire loaves of bread to go. Next time I'm here, that's what I'll have my eyes on. A unique find brought by a unique guy from a unique culture. And oh yeah, its delicious. Since moving here 8 years ago I've been trying to find a good bread bakery. So glad I stopped by. Daily fresh baked loafs of bread. Not a big selection and that's so they don't have to cut corners. Price is quite reasonable! Half of what I expected to pay! The cream puffs were amazing. The salted bread stick (I think it's called Kafta) is incredibly soft and wonderful. I'm headed home to cut a fat slice of my dark rye WITH NO CARAWAY SEEDS! :) I will be headed back for the balaclava soon soon soon read more

Simply the best bakery in Phoenix Metro area hands down! Now their new location at 12th Street and Bell Rd has some European goodies that are hard to find anywhere else and the pricing is great as well. One thing I would suggest is that you call-in an order if you're coming later in the day because the afternoon rush can leave you empty-handed, but if you call it in they make extra and put one on the side for you. The only downside is that I can't live off of burek and the pastries...but I do attempt to a few times a week ;) read more

This place is awesome! I happened to stumble upon it on a Saturday and they were closing half an hour early because they were sold out of everything!!! Not one single thing left for me to try. I made it a point the next day to go between my work appointments so I can have a taste of what the hype is about! Let me tell you - it is delicious! I had the spinach and cheese burek... it was better than what I have had at home. The Figaro dessert - I could simply live on that, mmm good! The man was very friendly and helpful!
