In our day's Sunnyslope business, our niece took us to Kris Frybread. Arriving we saw Dawn's. She said Dawn's gets high ratings too. After our excellent Kris meal I made my way to Dawn's. I am infamous in the family for my dessert rxtravagance. But I share with all at our table. Take your choice! Our niece got cannoli, I got lidded shortbread custard cups, vanilla and almond. Sweet D got a cherry and an apple turnover delivered into the box. It is five days later. My sugar intake has dropped a lot. In our home baking we cut sugar ingredients by half. Older Hopi bakers put in enough sugar for a hint of sweet in their cookies. Modern bakers glaze them. I'll take those traditional ones. When I say the shortbread cup with custard was too sweet for me, that's my 21st century palate speaking. The almond cup was a buy-again item for me, still sweet, very almond. The cherry turnover was flaky, the filling tart, oozing fillng and cherries. The gold medal, blue ribbon "I'd buy this again, for sure is the apple turnover. I stopped by for the first time, and it's such a cute little bakery! The staff was so friendly and welcoming, which made for a great first impression. I picked up an assortment of cookies because I've been searching for a bakery with really good cookies. I'm originally from Michigan, and I've been having a hard time finding cookies here that remind me of home. Dawn's Bakery definitely had the cozy, hometown atmosphere I was looking for, but unfortunately, the cookies I tried fell a little short. They looked delicious, but I found them to be lacking flavor. This is a delicious little bakery gem! Prices are crazy everywhere and Dawn's is in line with the rest of this insane inflation. Staff is nice. But oh my, the selection is almost intimidating, soooo many choices. I had the cheese Danish because I read several reviews about its deliciousness. Yup, it is. I bought a box of cannolis, and another box of cookies. The fig cookies are yummy, can't wait to eat the rest. The only minor complaint I have is that the coffee, served in a pump decanter, wasn't very hot. I thought about docking the bakery a star but nah, the bakery items more than compensate. My sister and I purchased 40+ dollars worth of stuff and all was nasty to us but the Apple Turnover my sister purchased Nothing great but acceptable. We just put our forks down from devouring Dawns cheesecake and WOW! It's my husband's birthday and I called to order a strawberry cheesecake as cheesecake is his favorite. This is a sugar dump. Everything is way too sweet. I just bought a yule log. I ended up cutting it up to fit it in the fridge. Just got through taking off ALL THE EXTRA SWEET frosting off of this cake. In addition to all the sugar in the frosting and cake, this yule log also had jelly in it. There was more frosting and jelly than cake. This yule log is approximately 10" long. The frosting thst I removed from HALF of this log was over 10 ounces. It was actually closer to 13 ounces but I didn't safe the first purge. Anyone who knows me, knows I have a sweet tooth, but there comes a time that it becomes gross. This bakery consistently crosses that line. I was in a pinch and ended up wasting money. Came here while I waited for my salvadoreno order to be ready and was very pleased! I had been to this spot before but not sure if it changed owners or something since I see grand opening pics from like a year ago? I got four cookies, chocolate chip, snickerdoodle, a sprinkle cookie, and an iced shortbread type cookie with a cute smiley on it! The display case is loaded with delicious treats, it was hard to choose. With the 4 cookies I got my total was only $8 which is awesome for good quality stuff like this! This is a dangerous place! When I spotted this bakery, I thought I would just pick up a small cake or pie for dessert that night (family was coming for dinner). Upon entering, it immediately reminded me of the Italian bakeries I knew on the East coast especially when I saw the selection of delectable goodies--various pastries, muffins, Danish, cookies, etc. It was hard to contain myself and I left with a box of different items. Everyone liked the selection but there was one delectable layered chocolate cake item (I think they called it Radiowave) that everyone wanted more of. A lot of care and good quality ingredients go into their products. While some might think they are pricey, I'm noticing it's not that much cheaper to do homemade these days--especially with the price of chocolate so I am happy to pay for something perfect. I appreciated the friendly service and good suggestions and cannot wait to come back and taste some of the things I missed. read more

This bakery is excellent! My mother is originally from NY so I grew up visiting NYC often and enjoyed the delicious bakeries there. I'm especially fond of black and white cookies. They are fantastic at Dawns! Everything I got was good and fresh, which also included a radio bar cake and iced sugar cookie, There is so much to try here and I'm sure everything is great. The counter worker was helpful and friendly. My only criticism is that the black and whites were stacked on top of each other and the frosting got messed up, if you are presenting these to company, I recommend you ask that they be boxed in such a way that they are not stacked. read more

I went to Karl's for years, then the owner retired. I was skeptical at first, but Dawn's is just as good, if not better. Their breads are so god, as their rolls. The pastries are flaky and very fresh. The employees are always very nice & patient. Best bakery in town! read more

I wanted to love this place but I don't! I purchased some pastries and they were dry as dust. I also ordered a cheesecake, it was also DRY and the fruit topping that I requested to be a sauce was instead a totally gelatinous glob of unknown that looked and tasted like it was a low-quality jam from a grocery store. This was to be for a special occasion but instead everyone took one bite and it was tossed in the trash. A total waste of time and money! We have used Banham's Bakery in the past and they were excellent every time; sadly this time they were booked solid so I couldn't order from them. UPDATE: Been here about half a dozen times now and I have to say every time I visit I love their pastries a little more. We've had everything from custom cakes to donuts and I've never been disappointed. If this bakery was closer to me I'd be there 5 times a week! Drove to Sunnyslope specifically to order a custom Cassata cake. Decided to take home pastries too. First, the choices are abundant. Multiple cases with donuts, pastries, and cookies. An upright refrigerated case with pie cuts and a few decorated cakes. Ordered about a dozen specialty pastries and massive donuts to split between my family and another. Nice girl behind the counter gladly put my selections in two boxes tied with string. It's a great old-school detail. The raspberry filled donut was pillowy, airy, and filled to the brim with sweet raspberry jam. The dough for this fresh donut was perfection. Next time, I will forgo the powered sugar and order the glazed version. The cheese Danish was more like a sweetened cheese croissant. That's not a bad thing. The pastry wasn't sweet, but the cheese and glaze was. A perfect balance. Both chocolate donut selections were decent but not as good as the filled raspberry. We haven't tried the sticky bun, fritter, or mini cherry cheesecake yet. Tomorrow is another day, but I'm sure if those are anything like the ones we've already eaten, we will be in sugar coma heaven again tomorrow. I'd love to try a loaf of the rye bread, but I'm the only one in my family that likes it, and I can't justify the $$$, when fresh bread doesn't last very long. Pricing is competitive with other local mom and pop bakeries. For about 13 specialty pastries, it was $30. That might seem expensive, but half of the basic chocolate donuts were larger than one of the other guys. In my mind that's like two for one. I will definitely be returning fresh, quality baked goods made with care and pride. read more

Woohoo, it's 2025 and this bakery is 2 legit to quit! I was on a mission to acquire a German Chocolate cake for a birthday and I'd be remiss if I had grabbed something off the shelf from Fry's or Safeway. At least that was my excuse when I couldn't actually find one at Fry's or Safeway. I have not been in to Dawns NY Bakery before, but being a bakery, I guessed they could whip one up for me. How surprised was I to find that not only can I order one for pick up, they'll also sell it to me for only a couple dollars more than a same size (not German Chocolate) cake from both Fry's and Safeway. The cake was delicious, well worth the extra $10 and the birthday boy was happy to have the exact cake they desired for their 13th birthday dinner. When the Queen of France said "let them eat cake", I think she was probably talking about going to Dawn's NY Bakery. read more

When I walk in to Dawn's it smells like the east coast bakeries of my childhood. They have all the Italian cookies. We ordered a custom birthday cake and it turned out fantastic. For me the stand out are the rolls. It's really hard to find good kaiser rolls in Phoenix but they make great ones here. The real deal where you buy them fresh on the day you need them. We ordered a variety of items, including Kringle, lemon bars, rum baba, and apple bars. Pros * The Cherry & Cheese Kringle was excellent! Cons * The service was disappointing. First time trying the bakery, and the girl at the counter had a noticeable attitude and seemed unwilling to answer our questions. * I wanted to pick up two additional Kringles, but I was informed that they must be ordered in advance. I assumed a bakery would have some available for quick pickup, but that wasn't the case. * The apple bar was essentially frozen. It sat out for 3 hours and was still pretty cold. I wasn't sure if I should eat it cold or warm, and it didn't taste great cold. No one liked it. * Rum baba was so soaked that it was just mush. No one liked this either. Given that this bakery is 30 minutes away and requires advance orders for Kringles, I'll likely just head to Trader Joe's for my Kringle. There's no reason to drive that far and deal with rude service. read more

What a great addition to the neighborhood! Had the napoleon, chocolate doughnut with Bavarian creme filling, a snickerdoodle and a black/white cookie. All were delicious with the doughnut as the best. Cost is very reasonable. Ever other place seems to charge $3+ for a cookie. This place was $1.50. Amazing new find and an italian famuly owned bakery Phoenix really needs! Expansive selection, made from scratch custards and cream fillings for their baked goods, and very good prices in my opinion.
