The scenery, atmosphere, and overall property create a relaxing environment that feels very "Kentucky wine country." The staff was also incredibly friendly, welcoming, and wonderful with families and kids. The gift shop and tasting space itself functionally was not laid out in a way that made the experience especially easy or comfortable to enjoy. For those of you interested in tastings, there is nowhere comfortable to sit during the tasting process, unless you want to trade into plastic cups and head outside. This unintentionally created a rushed feeling, even though the staff themselves never pressured us. As for the wines, I tried the Cabernet Sauvignon, Equestrian Series, and Crimson Cabernet. I personally tend to lean towards drier, more robust wines, these felt fairly lackluster overall and lacked the depth and balance I personally look for in a wine that can either stand confidently on its own or pair beautifully with food. A few of the sweeter wines others in my group sampled came across far more grape-forward than expected and reminded me more of juice than a refined wine experience. (My overall impression was they paired more with $10 bottles than the prices that were asked) While the staff was clearly well-intentioned and friendly, the overall tasting experience lacked some of the seriousness, polish, and professionalism that you would expect from a true leader in the wine space. We had to request that glasses be emptied and cleaned between tastings, water was never offered between pours, and some of the finer details that elevate a winery experience simply felt overlooked. That said, this place has a lot of potential. Between the scenery, atmosphere, and welcoming team, I could absolutely see why Talon Winery would become a favorite spot for locals or visitors looking for a casual afternoon outing. I should clarify first that I may be the least qualified person to write a review here. I've spent all of 5 hours in Berea in my lifetime, although that short span happened to coincide with the Spoonbread festival. And you can count the number of times I've had spoonbread on one hand. But that's not going to stop me from reflecting on spoonbread as a culinary centerpiece. I don't think the Berea festival features a spoonbread bake-off or eating contest or food fight, but the festival does very rightly churn out large quantities of samples of the dish. The spoonbread I had here was very light and fluffy, almost best described as a Kentucky souffle. If it's lacking in depth of flavor, it more than suffices as a light, creamy conduit for melted butter. I've had spoonbread elsewhere at The Eagle, a regional chain, where the texture is a lot more hardy and grainy, probably from a coarser cornmeal. That was a very different dish. But what that had in common with my Berea cornbread experience is that in both cases, you can scoop it with a spoon, and in both cases, that lather of butter makes it a guilty indulgence. I don't think Berea can lay claim as the place of origin for spoonbread, but it does seem to be a lovely little town at the base of some lovely foothills. Easily worth a spoonful.

When we visited, there were seven wines to be tasted for $8 and the tasting fee is waved if you buy a bottle of wine. The winemaker and owner Brian is a true gem - he works by himself but made all of his customers feel important while he had to run tastings, answer the phone, and check people out. He took the time to get to know everyone's names and you can tell he is immensely proud of his wine. All of the wines are award winners. We took a few bottles home to enjoy at home in NY!
